Due to the long holiday weekend we, like other sites out there, won’t be posting quite as much stuff. Hey, ever our writers need time off sometimes (but not too much). Still, that doesn’t mean we won’t be putting up anything.
Case in point, this new Terminator-inspired music video made by Matthew Belinkie, the guy responsible for other fan films like The Dark Bailout andIndy Shot First.
Even thought the production quality isn’t the greatest (it is a fan film, remember), the video is still fun and the song is pretty decent as well. Enjoy.
Even though its the Friday before a long weekend that doesn’t mean we don’t have anything to show you before you head off for a weekend of fun. Now that our move to new server hosting at Media Temple is complete, we can get back to bringing you the news, podcast, reviews, interviews and all the other things you’ve come to know and expect from The Flickcast.
In that spirit, here’s some brand new images, courtesy of the folks at Entertainment Weekly, from the upcoming The Twilight Saga: New Moon, the sequel to the first Twilight film and based on the novels by Stephenie Meyer. Not many surprises here, at least not yet, just your usual Bella and Edward and Bella and a baddie pics.
Still, its nice to see that sometimes, even with a new movie, things still are quite familiar. The Twilight Saga: New Moon hist theaters on November 20th. Click here to see the rest of the pics at EW.
If you happen to be a big a fan of science fiction like we are here at The Flickcast, you’re probably looking forward to the new TV season and all the great science fiction shows that will be debuting and returning then. However, there’s quite a few of them and it might be difficult to figure out what they are, what network they’re on and what time they show.
And really, who has the time to do all that research anyway? Not us and not you. Fortunately, the folks over at Sci-Fi Wire apparently do have the time because they’ve put together this handy guide to each and every science fiction show coming out in the Fall on all the networks, including ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX and the CW.
Its a great guide and one that will allow you, and us, to figure out how to fill our Tivos properly once the new season of shows starts. Thanks Sci-Fi Wire, you guys are okay. Now please, tell your masters we want more BSG. . . now!
In honor of this weekend’s theatrical release of the fourth film in the Terminator franchise, Terminator: Salvation, we bring you the mother of all fan films about robots killing each other. This video made it’s way around the net a few years ago, and even spawned a few sequels and parodies, but this is the original, mashing up just about every piece of footage from both franchises.
If you stick around, there’s even a surprise guest towards the end. Try to ignore the French subtitles and enjoy!
Even with our own Matt Raub’s less-than-stellar review, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Termnator: Salvation hit the ground running and so far has done well at the domestic box office. With a first-day total of $13.3 million, including some Wednesday midnight performances, the film is expected to gross close to $70 million through the Monday holiday.
The first-day tally for the film fell short of any significant record, but that could be the good news for Warners if it’s to outpace Fox’s big opener, Night at the Museum 2, for weekend bragging rights. Weekend rankings will be based on Friday through Monday grosses and, according to the reporter, some had suggested a huge Thursday gross might sap the Terminator of sufficient boxoffice strength to take the top spot for the weekend.
Paramount’s Star Trek continued to perform well and was second among Thursday’s top grossers earning $3 million to make its total $161.6 million so far. Sony’s Angels & Demons was third with $2.6 million, pushing the Tom Hanks starrer beyond $160 million.
I guess you should never underestimate the power of Christian Bale, explosions and robots that kill.
Mark Waid’s “Open 24/7″ story arc finally comes to a crashing ending, not in a bad way but with a literal crash. I’ll get to that later though. After being blinded by a faceoff with the new Vulture at the end of the last issue, Spider-Man is forced to start off this book by asking himself something every one of us has had to ask ourselves at one point, “W.W.D.D.D.?” (What would Daredevil Do?) There isn’t one among us who doesn’t hope that if blinded, our other senses would kick in and pick up the slack. That’s exactly what Spidey deals with as he struggles just to survive this confrontation with the carrion eating new villain.
The issue also continues the story of Aunt May’s romance with J. Jonah Jameson Sr. which had a much better mental image left behind than when Peter had caught them knocking boots a few issues back. In an effort to keep Spider-Man tied to current “real-life” events, much of the latter part of the issue takes place at the new Yankee Stadium where mayor J. Jonah Jameson (Jr.) is enjoying a day at the ballpark with his “adoring public”. This happens to be where the big crash happens as Spider-Man is sent through the skybox window of Norman Osborn during his fight with the Vulture.
Now that two of our favorite shows, Heroes and The Office, have gone away until next season, what’s a fan of these shows to do to pass the time until they return? Well, there’s always the DVDs of previous season to watch, but somehow those often seem to familiar. Instead, wouldn’t it would be great to have some brand new content and stories to watch instead?
Well, you’re in luck because that’s exactly what NBC has done for both of these shows. Over at the NBC website, they’re featuring brand new webisode stories from both Heroes and The Office for fans to see and enjoy. Sure, some of these webisodes have been at the site for a bit but if you haven’t seen them they feature new stories and content not seen on the regular run of the shows. And, especially in the case of Heroes, offer a bit of new insight into the interweaving adventures of tv’s favorite group of super-beings.
Heroes returns in the fall on a new night and time: Mondays at 8/7c. The Office stays where it is on Thursdays at 9/8c. Until then, enjoy the webisodes.
Well, at least I think he does. Although, if this trailer for his new film Surrogates is any indication, there’s not much Willis character likes about anything in this film. In fact, he seems a bit perturbed.
In case you’re not familiar with Surrogates, which is based on the graphic novel by Robert Venditti, it concerns two FBI agents (Willis and Radha Mitchell) investigating the murder of a college student linked to a man who helped create a high-tech surrogate phenomenon. This technology allows people to purchase perfect robotic versions of themselves which, of course, leads to all kind of trouble.
I like Bruce Willis in pretty much anything he does and its nice to see Radha Mitchell in a movie that looks much better than the last one I saw her in — the craptastic giant killer crocodile film Rogue, co-starring Michael “just doing it for the paycheck” Vartan.
Plus, this movie is directed by Jonathan Mostow (Terminator 3: Rise of The Machines, Breakdown), a guy who’s films usually are quite good. So, that might mean this movie could actually be good too. We’ll find out when Surrogates hits theaters September 25th. Until then, check out this brand new trailer.
I’m sure I speak for a lot of you out there when I admit that I miss Battlestar Galactica. It was a great show full of action, drama, suspense, pathos, great acting and memorable characters. One of those memorable characters, and also one of my personal favorites, was Starbuck — played on the show by the beautiful and talented Katee Sackhoff.
During the four seasons of BSG, Sackhoff brought a great intensity and humor to the role of Starbuck as well as some anger, volatility and vulnerability. It was a complex and compelling performance that will surely go down as one of the best on television thus far and one I definitely miss each Friday now that BSG is no longer on the air.
Of course, I’ve always got my DVDs of BSG to comfort me and I’m sure Katee will go on to many more prominent roles on TV and in films. Meanwhile, even if my DVDs of the show aren’t handy, I can still get my Katee fix from this interview Crackle’sJace Hall did with her at The Smoke House, one of my favorite BBQ places in Burbank.
At least he didn’t try to interview her at Starbucks. If so, I think the universe might have imploded. Katee comes in after the first few minutes so please, be patient and enjoy.
Once more we bring you news of your favorite tween wizard and his pals. Previously, we’ve shown you some video, a cool poster and more from the upcoming Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the sixth movie based on J.K. Rowling’s novel of the same name.
This time around, we’ve got a brand new poster (the ‘Dark Secrets’ edition) from the film, via MSN, and its all Harry all the time for this one with his Potterness front and center, wand at the ready and about to kick some Voldemort butt. He’s flanked, of course, by his trusted pals and mentor Hermione, Ron and Dumbledore.
I wonder what those ‘dark secrets’ could be? I guess we’ll find out when Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince hits theaters July 15th.Until then, you could always go back and read the books again — or for the first time. They’re quite good and, I believe, rather popular.
Be sure to check out a larger version of the poster after the jump.
Before you sit down in that dark theater this weekend to see Terminator: Salvation, if you are a fan of the Terminator franchise, this movie is not for you. The very first words out of my mouth after walking out of the theater were “This was a terrible Terminator movie, but a pretty good Transformers movie.” Truer words haven’t been said abut this film. We at The Flickcast had our doubts about this film, between Bale’s outburst on set and McG slowly stepping out of the limelight, but none of us expected the film to be this bad.
Even going into this without expectations, it’s pretty hard to salvage a good movie from the two hours or so you’re in the theater. With bad accents and love story subplots, this movie forces fans of the franchise into a blinding rage by the time the credits role. I had the luck of being in a packed house with fans who were hooting and screaming when the first titles came on the screen. Their demeanor changed pretty quickly as the movie went on.
What makes this film a better Transformers film than a Terminator film? How about the complete lack of anything “time travel”. It’s understood in Terminator canon that they don’t find a time travel device until the fall of SkyNet, but how can you continue a franchise and not even address one of it’s biggest plot points? That would be like making a sequel to Back to the Future all about how peaceful and trouble free the McFly’s are in 1996. The closest they came to this plot point was the voice of Sarah Connor on a tape recorder giving John instructions from the past (not Linda Hamilton, by the way).

Pull of the Week:
Captain America #50 – Marvel – $3.99
Score: 7.5
Talk about promotional timing. This month, Captain America gets it’s 50th issue. Next month, Marvel lets the series go back to its original numbering and gives Cap his 600th issue. So what does writer Ed Brubaker bring to the 50th issue of Marvel’s Sentinel of Liberty? A birthday issue. The pages open with a dramatic action sequence from Penciler Luke Ross with Bucky being chased down the street by three heavily armed high-tech equipped villains. Bucky talks about how this birthday for him is just any other as he is doing what he has seemingly done on every birthday he can remember… fight.
As Bucky continues his confrontation, he takes the reader back to his memories of various birthdays like the bar-room brawl he encountered at sixteen, fighting alongside the Invaders at eighteen and interrogating a Nazi with Steve Rogers, his idol and partner, on his twentieth birthday. He even fades back to a few brief memories as his time as the Winter Soldier where he didn’t even experience his birthdays anymore.
As Bucky remembers his past while dealing with his present danger, he must contend with something that will forever haunt him, something he cannot argue. Bucky knows he is not the real Captain America. No matter how much good he does for the world or how many people he helps to make up for his past, he will never be Steve Rogers.
