‘Blackest Night’ Leads to a Father and Son Reunion?

by John Carle, Jun 6 2009 // 7:30 AM

blackest-night-superman1With anticipation building for DC’s next big crossover “Blackest Night”, the biggest question seems to be “Who are the Black Lanterns?” Judging from tag line such as “The Dead Will Rise”, upcoming comic solicits and various toy line announcements, a few characters have been basically confirmed to be wearers of the black rings. Some of the most notable characters expected to be Black Lanterns are Martian Manhunter, Aquaman and Earth-2 Superman.

For those who don’t know, Earth-2′s Superman is a older version of Superman from an alternate dimension who was killed by Super-Boy Prime in the “Infinite Crisis” crossover event. In the upcoming mini-series Blackest Night: Superman, Earth-2 Superman is seen standing over the grave of the recently deceased Jonathan Kent, the father of the Superman we all know and love (Well, maybe not all love but at least all know).

Could this mean that Pa Kent is destined to become one of the Black Lanterns? With Earth-2 Superman being one, it has already set the stage for Superman to become involved in the crossover. But if his own father were to become one, how could Clark Kent fight the man who adopted and raised him like his own son?

E3 2009: Microsoft’s ‘Project Natal’ First Look Video

by Chris Ullrich, Jun 5 2009 // 5:00 PM

Sure, E3 ended yesterday, but there’s still a few things left to show from the show. One of those, as we told you about previously in our Microsoft announcements article, was the announcement of “Project Natal”, a new controller-less technology developed by Microsoft.

What it does is allow you to play games and control the XBox 360 without the use of a controller, a mouse, a keyboard or any kind of physical interface. You just use your hands and body.

This may sound like science fiction but after seeing the demo of the technology at E3, it looks much more like a reality. Still not convinced? I don’t blame you, I was skeptical at first too, but seeing it in action made the difference. Check out this demo video below and see for yourself.

The New ‘Final Destination 4′ Trailer

by Chris Ullrich, Jun 5 2009 // 4:08 PM

final-destination4-posterOver at UGO they’ve got the trailer for Final Destination 4 (aka The Final Destination), which is supposedly the last installment in the FD franchise. In the trailer, and in the movie, we’re treated to the usual gang of people who’ve temporarily escaped death only to be confronted with their demise later once death realizes its mistake and comes to collect.

Oh, and there’s one other twist this time around: its in 3D. I’m not sure if that will help or hinder the proceedings but even if its a dismal failure, rest assured others will still try to make and release movies in 3D because they think that’s what the audience wants. Didn’t Hollywood try this stunt a couple times before in the early 50′s and mid 80′s and it failed miserably?

I seem to recall a little movie called Jaws 3: 3D that came and went pretty quickly. That wasn’t that long ago. Plus, does anyone remember Spacehunter: Adventures in The Forbidden Zone starring Peter Strauss and a young Molly Ringwald or Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn featuring Jeffrey Byron and Kelly Preston? Didn’t think so.

I guess its time to try it again what with this movie and James Cameron’s Avatar coming out. Maybe they’ll get 3D right this time? it could happen.

Final Destination 4, starring Krista Allen, Nick Zano and Mykelti Williamson, hits theaters August 28th. Check out the trailer after the jump.

‘Archie’ Comics Now Available on Apple’s iPhone and iPod Touch

by Heather Toshiko, Jun 5 2009 // 2:34 PM

archie-iphoneSince getting my iPhone a year ago, I have been greedily downloading various applications and wasting a fair amount of time in the process. Do I really need an app that taps out a Morse Code translation for any message that I input? Can I exist without the random rock/paper/scissors generator? Maybe. But here’s the thing though, I found an application that I really don’t think I can live without: Archie Comics on the iPhone and iPod Touch!

Since 1979 I have been an avid Archie reader. I spent many an afternoon reading Archie’s TV Laugh Out, Betty and Veronica, and the coveted Double Digests. I still have my threadbare Archie nightshirt from Mervyns, circa 1985, and an old VHS somewhere of the Archie TV movie. In recent years, however, I’ve read fewer and fewer copies of the “Red Headed Rapscallion.” I simply don’t have the time to go hunting at a comic book store and most grocery stores no longer carry comics.

Now, thanks to the folks at iVerse Media, I have the Riverdale High crew at my fingertips, 24/7. With the launch of the new Archie app, we can read about the months prior to our friends starting their first year at Riverdale High. “The Summer Before Freshman Year” is a five part series that chronicles the gang’s transition, apprehension and preparation for high school. Here’s the best thing: Part 1 is Free!

‘Battlestar Galactica’, the UN and ‘The Plan’

by Chris Ullrich, Jun 5 2009 // 12:15 PM

Thursday night in Los Angeles at the famous Chinese Theater on Hollywood Blvd., producers and cast members from Sci-Fi Channel‘s groundbreaking series Battlestar Galactica got together with officials for the United Nations to discuss issues ranging from human rights to accountability to peace and justice throughout the world — and The Flickcast was there to bring you all the details.

Although these global issues are very important and worthy of discussion, because this is Hollywood, the panel also managed to talk a bit about Battlestar Galactica, the DVD release of the series and the upcoming movie The Plan.

olmos-mcdonnell-eick-moore

Previously, this group had gotten together at the actual United Nations in New York, which we told you about, and this time around the topics of discussion for the first part of the evening were similar. First up was Sci-Fi Channel President Dave Howe who announced, among other things, that Battlestar Galactica had been nominated for “Program of the Year” by the Television Critics Association.

Then, after a round of thunderous applause at that statement, to which he responded “Well, we haven’t won yet,” he introduced the moderator for the evening: Geoff Boucher of the Los Angels Times’ Hero Complex Blog. Once Boucher took the stage, he introduced the representatives from the UN and the cast and producers of Batlestar Galactica, and then went right into some clips from the four seasons of BSG, including scenes with all your favorite cast members relevant to the topics at hand. Next, Boucher jumped in with questions for the panel.

As this event was billed as a discussion about “TV’s role in making global issues relevant” the questions for the panel started off with very serious topics. Some of these included human rights, a discussion of justice versus revenge, how accountability is important when punishing people who perpetrate crimes against humanity, that BSG addressed issues that people in the UN address each and every day and how the UN doesn’t use the term “Air Locking” like they do on BSG, but, joked one UN rep, perhaps they should.

Fan Film Friday: Will Ferrell in ‘Bat Fight’

by Matt Raub, Jun 5 2009 // 9:15 AM

With both Land of the Lost and The Hangover opening, it looks to be a side-splitting weekend in the world of film. So, what better way to start it off than by watching an old Funny-or-Die classic in Will Ferrell’s Bat Fight.

If you’re wondering what’s up with Ferrell’s long platinum hair, the short was shot on the set of a The Flickcast favorite, Eastbound & Down while Ferrell was filming a cameo from last season. This parody short is about a game of both honor and diplomacy…oh, and killing your opponent with a baseball bat.

The short also stars The Office’s Craig Robinson. Check it out after the jump.

The Pull List Comic Reviews: ‘Timestorm 2009-2099′, ‘Irredeemable’, and More!

by John Carle, Jun 5 2009 // 8:15 AM

For part one of this week’s Pull List, click here.

Timestorm 2009 – 2099: Spider-Man – Marvel – $3.99

Score: 4.5

After Spider-Man: A Short Halloween failed to get reviewed by the Pull List because it had been on the bottom of an eighteen book stack, I made sure that didn’t happen again with another Spider-Man one-shot. Unfortunately, this issue was nowhere close to the quality of A Short Halloween. This issue continues the ongoing “Timestorm” series which sent both Spider-Man and Wolverine in to the future and the Punisher of 2099 stuck in the modern age. After an explosion caused by a time-shift, young Miguel O’Hara has attained abilities similar to the Spider-Man of what he calls the heroic age. Resulting from the same explosion, another boy in his class has mutated in to a large scorpion-like monster.

At the same time, Peter Parker, our modern day Spider-Man sits in a rubber room with a straight jacket with a young mutant girl Shakti who can see in to people’s past and future. The two escape their holding facility before crossing paths with Miguel. As this run-in occurs an explosion goes off, forcing Spider-Man to go find out its cause and leaving Miguel and Shakti behind. Miguel is about to give chase when Shakti tells him he needs a disguise or his identity will be found out.

Miguel dons a costume of Spider-Man 2099 and rushes in to help Spider-Man face the scorpion creature that had been created alongside him. Before heading off to try and find a way home, Spider-Man tells Miguel to burn the costume as wearing it will bring nothing good to his life. Instead, Miguel mimics what Peter originally did and steps in to a fight arena to try and take on his time’s Human Torch.

The more I look at the issue, the less I like it. First off, it is very confusing as there are apparently three separate alternate 2099 continuities. While they all have the same basis, none of them matchup between this version where Miguel gains the powers as a youth, the original Spider-Man 2099 series, and the Spider-Man 2099 who had a brief stint in the exiles.

Every Sci-Fi and Fantasy Show to Watch This Summer

by Joe Gillis, Jun 4 2009 // 5:32 PM

trueblood_paquin_moyerYou know the old joke about what kinds of music they play at a certain bar? It goes something like this: “We play both kinds of music . . . Country and Western.” See, that’s funny because those are the same thing . . . never mind. Still, the intent of the joke applies to the worlds of Sci-Fi and Fantasy.

As in, we like ‘em both here at The Flickcast. We also tend to watch a lot of TV. So, how do we combine those two things together and, more importantly, figure out which shows are worth watching and which aren’t? Fortunately, over at Sci-Fi Wire, they’ve done the hard work for us and compiled a list of every Sci-Fi and Fantasy show we could possibly watch this Summer.

Some of the shows they highlight in the article that we’re looking forward to are listed below. For the complete list, be sure to head over to Sci-Fi Wire.

New Posters Revealed for ‘Iron Man 2′, ‘Captain America’, & ‘Thor’

by Matt Raub, Jun 4 2009 // 2:30 PM

Marvel Quad PosterOn the heels of the poster and release date released for Spider-Man 4 earlier this week, more pictures have come from the Marvel booth at the Licensing Expo 2009 in Las Vegas. This time, the spotlight is on the rest of the Marvel universe, with a quad poster revealed for Iron Man 2, The First Avenger: Captain America, Thor, and all of them together in The Avengers.

The best part of the posters being released is the projected release dates that come along with them. The first, which wasn’t a huge surprise is that Jon Favreau’s Iron Man 2 will be released May 7 of 2010. According to director Favreau’s tweets, they are about halfway through principle photography, and yes, Sam Jackson will be back.

Ridley Scott Producing Web Series With Ties to ‘Blade Runner’

by Joe Gillis, Jun 4 2009 // 1:15 PM

blade_runner_xlgThis could either be really cool or really lame. Either way, here’s the info about Ridley’s Scott’s new web series with, apparently, some connection to his 1982 sci-fi classic film Blade Runner. According to the New York Times:

On Thursday the film’s director, Ridley Scott, announced that a new division of his commercials company, RSA Films, was working on a video series called “Purefold.” The series of linked 5- to 10-minute shorts, aimed first at the Web and then perhaps television, will be set at a point in time before 2019, when the Harrison Ford movie takes place in a dystopian Los Angeles.

Mr. Scott, his brother Tony and his son Luke are developing the project in conjunction with the independent studio Ag8, which is run by one of the creators of “Where are the Joneses?” a British Web sitcom that solicited storyline suggestions from the audience. Similarly, “Purefold” will harvest story input from its viewers, in conjunction with the social media site FriendFeed.

But the series won’t be hewing too closely to the specific characters or situations in “Blade Runner.” Some of that material stemmed from the Philip K. Dick novel “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” which the “Purefold” creators do not have rights to.

“We don’t take any of the canon or copyrighted assets from the movie,” said David Bausola, founding partner of Ag8, who said he hoped the series would debut later this summer and that the first episodes would depict events about two years into the future. “It’s actually based on the same themes as ‘Blade Runner.’ It’s the search for what it means to be human and understanding the notion of empathy. We are inspired by ‘Blade Runner.’”

So, the show will have some elements of “dystopian Los Angeles” and be based on the same themes as Blade Runner. Interesting. Really, if they want to do a show about dystopian Los Angeles, they could set it in modern times and just drive around certain neighboorhodds looking for stories. There’s enough “dystopian” out there for ten web series.

E3 2009: Activision Sues to Keep Jack Black Video Game Off Shelves

by Chris Ullrich, Jun 4 2009 // 12:30 PM

brutal_legendIt wouldn’t be America without lawsuits so here’s another one to bring you today. According to The Hollywood Reporter, video game giant Activision is suing to stop the release of the Jack Black video game Brutal Legend.

THR got the news from The AP, which says: “Activision Entertainment Holdings sued game developer Double Fine Productions in Santa Monica, Calif., on Wednesday. The lawsuit claims that Double Fine transferred rights owned by Activision to Electronic Arts, which plans to release the game later this year. Activision claims it still has a valid contract to release the game and has invested roughly $15 million in it.”

Brutal Legend features Black as a heavy-metal roadie transported to a mythical world to fight evil. The game looks pretty cool and seeing footage of it at E3 made me want to check it out more when it finally gets released. Although, with this lawsuit, that may never happen now so perhaps I should have played it a bit more when I had the chance. Can’t we all just get along? I guess not when there’s $15 Million involved.

To see more about the game, watch the trailer from E3 after the jump. Enjoy it because if this lawsuit goes very far, It may be all you ever get to see.
