Rorschach to Play Sinestro in ‘Green Lantern’?

by Bob Starr, Oct 19 2009

Jackie Earle HaleyWhile news about the upcoming Green Lantern movie is still pretty sketchy, details are starting to trickle in. The latest is pretty exciting. Ain’t It Cool News is reporting that Jackie Earle Haley may be playing villain Sinestro.

Haley is probably best known at this point for playing Rorschach in Watchmen which came out last April.  However, as notorious as Rorschach seemed he’ll be getting upstaged soon enough.  When next we see Haley he’ll be wearing the hat, sweater and razor glove made infamous by Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare on Elm Street reboot.   Unfortunately, as deadly as Krueger was as a nightmare serial killer can he really compare to a villain feared throughout the galaxy?  Hopefully we’ll get to find out.

In conjunction with this comes a hint that Superman may also appear in the Green Lantern film. While no details have emerged regarding this, it makes sense that DC would emulate Marvel‘s efforts to integrate their various comic book films.  Further, given the legalities DC has been facing regarding the Superman property this may help prove they are making efforts to reinvigorated the character after lackluster reviews of Superman Returns.

In other Green Lantern news, Warner Bros. has been forced to pull production from Australia:

“After working closely with our partners at the NSW Film and Television Office (Screen NSW) and examining every scenario, we have decided to move the production of ‘Green Lantern.’ We are extremely grateful for the assistance we have received from the NSW Government, Fox Studios and the NSW filmmaking community,” the statement said.

It should come as no surprise that the motivation for this is financial.  On Friday the Australian dollar hit a record high, “…closing at 95 cents, a 30% decrease in value for the greenback since the shoot was announced six months ago, and which would reportedly add over $20 million in cost to the production.” . No official word on where Green Lantern will be shooting but we’ll keep you posted.

Directed by Martin Campbell and starring Ryan Reynolds, Green Lantern is set for a June 17, 2011 release.
