Sam Worthington Takes On Title Role In ‘Quartermain’

by Sebastian Suchecki, May 14 2010 // 9:00 AM

We have been more than vocal about our feeling that Sam Worthington is being pushed onto worldwide audiences as an action star, regardless of his relative merits. His work in films like Avatar, Terminator Salvation, and most recently Clash of the Titans, however, proves to studios that he’s a bankable enough name to attach him to even more potential franchises.

With that in mind, Worthington has just been tapped to play the titular role in Dreamworks’ upcoming big-budget sci-fi adaptation of the literary character Allan Quatermain, in the film Quatermain. From Heat Vision:

Allan Quatermain was the hero of “King’s Solomon’s Mines,” a Victorian adventure novel by H. Rider Haggard, and its sequel, “Allan Quatermain.” In the first book, Quatermain leads an expedition into an unexplored region of Africa to find the brother of a friend as well as a fabled treasure of the lost mines.

DreamWorks’ version is set in a time in which humans have left Earth and sees Quatermain return to the planet from a sojourn in space, embarking on another “King Solomon’s Mines”-style adventure but on a planetwide scale. Mark Verheiden was the writer behind the first script when the project was revealed early last year.

‘Chuck’ and ‘V’ Renewed For Next Season, ‘FlashForward’ Canceled

by Chris Ullrich, May 14 2010 // 8:00 AM

Fans of NBC’s Chuck and ABC’s V it’s time to break out the champagne (or celebratory beverage of your choice). Why? Because both of these shows ave been renewed by their respective networks.

That’s right, both Chuck and V will be getting thirteen new episodes next season which will actually be season four for Chuck and season two for V. As a big fan of both shows I, for one, am thrilled with the news. I’ve been with Chuck since the beginning and was worried about the perpetual “on the bubble” show most of this season, just like last season when renewal was in question right up to the end.

That was the case with V as well, which took a very long hiatus after a short run and then came back to finish its season, which concludes next week. Fortunately, after a somewhat slow start, ratings for V have improved significantly, especially last week’s episode, while those for Chuck have remained steady but have not been spectacular.

Fortunately, Chuck has seemingly done well enough to get another go and now we know we get to enjoy both shows again next season. Great news indeed. Sadly, things are not so good for another freshmen show Flash Forward, which has seen its ratings steadily decline and has gone through a host of creative changes. The network has decided to pull the plug and it will not be coming back next year.

First Image of Ryan Reynolds In ‘Green Lantern’ Suit . . . Sort Of

by Matt Raub, May 14 2010 // 7:00 AM

About a month ago, we first told you that Ryan Reynolds wouldn’t be donning any spandex or leather for his upcoming superhero blockbuster Green Lantern. Instead, Warner Bros. and director Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) made the executive decision to make Hal Jordan’s suit completely computer generated.

With that said, we’re getting the first set pic of Reynolds walking around in the motion-capture suit he wears when shooting so that the visual effects team knows what to replace with the futuristic and shiny Green Lantern costume.

We are still not completely sold on the idea of a non-practical suit for the film, as it looked in the comics, but it will always beat the decision to give the X-Men black leather suits, so we’re OK with it for now.

Check out the image of Reynolds on set in the motion-capture suit, and see if you can imagine what the suit will look like in the finished film. Thanks to our pals at MTV Splash Page for the heads up on the pic.

Brand New Poster For Taylor Hackford’s ‘Love Ranch’ Hits the ‘Net

by Heather Toshiko, May 13 2010 // 3:00 PM

Once in awhile a film comes along that, for various reasons, you just can’t help but be interested in. Love Ranch is one of those films. Directed by Taylor Hackford and featuring an eclectic and awesome cast which includes Helen Mirren, Joe Pesci, Gina Gershon, Taryn Manning, Scout Taylor-Compton, Bai Ling, MC Gainey and Bryan Cranston, the film looks to be one I won’t want to miss.

In case you’re not familiar with Love Ranch it tells the intriguing story of Grace Bontempo (Mirren) and Charlie Bontempo (Pesci), the husband and wife team who own and run Nevada’s first legalized brothel. Yes, that’s right, Mirren and Pesci play a husband and wife who are the founders of the first brothel in Nevada. But wait, it gets better.

Their lives are suddenly altered when a world famous heavy weight boxer is brought to the Ranch to train as part of Charlie’s entrepreneurial empire. Of course, as they often do, plans go awry when Bruza comes between Grace and Charlie and creates a love triangle that erupts into uncontrollable passion and murder. Uncontrollable passion and murder? Yes indeed, sign me up.

To help you get more of an idea what the film is about with the help of a visual aid, we’ve got the first poster for it to share with you today. Check out the larger version of the poster after the jump. Love Ranch hits theaters on June 30.

Dreamworks Reveals Official ‘Cowboys & Aliens’ Film Synopsis

by Chris Ullrich, May 13 2010 // 2:00 PM

Whatever your feelings about director Jon Favreau’s work on the recent Iron Man 2 (for the record both Matt and I enjoyed it but didn’t love it) he’s moving forward with his next project. Not surprisingly, it will also be an adaptation of a comic book. In this case, that would be the comic Cowboys & Aliens written by Fred Van Lente and Andrew Foley.

We’ve brought you info on this film previously, including some casting and script news, and now thanks to DreamWorks Pictures, we can bring you the official synopsis for the film, which is being adapted by scribes Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Damon Lindelof and stars Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Olivia Wilde, Sam Rockwell and Noah Ringer:

1873. Arizona Territory. A stranger (Craig) with no memory of his past stumbles into the hard desert town of Absolution. The only hint to his history is a mysterious shackle that encircles one wrist. What he discovers is that the people of Absolution don’t welcome strangers, and nobody makes a move on its streets unless ordered to do so by the iron-fisted Colonel Dolarhyde (Ford). It’s a town that lives in fear.

But Absolution is about to experience fear it can scarcely comprehend as the desolate city is attacked by marauders from the sky. Screaming down with breathtaking velocity and blinding lights to abduct the helpless one by one, these monsters challenge everything the residents have ever known.

What Is iPad? Apple Tells You In This New Comercial

by Chris Ullrich, May 13 2010 // 1:00 PM

As you probably know, especially if you’re a regular reader of this site, Apple recently released a tablet computer called the iPad. The device, a touch screen wonder that’s sold over a million units since its introduction, is an amazing piece of technology. But given that, what is it exactly?

Well, if you’re someone who’s asked that question, Apple’s now got you covered with a new commercial. The “What is iPad” spot debuted today and tries to answer that question by emphasizing the iPad’s usability, huge and diverse selection of applications, multimedia capabilities, web-related features and what Apple really does best, the iPad’s intuitive user interface.

Of course, the commercial also shows the iPad being put through its paces by a number of cool people, which only serves to make the device look even sexier and more “magical.” Oddly, even with all those people using the iPad, nary a fingerprint can be seen on its glossy screen. Maybe Apple should share the “magic” of that little iPad secret with the rest of us?

Check out the new commercial after the jump. The iPad is available now.

TV RECAP: ‘Happy Town: Polly Wants A Crack At Her’

by Shannon Hood, May 13 2010 // 12:00 PM

I must say I was delighted with this episode. The first two episodes of the season were somewhat uneven, and I was a bit worried about the direction of the show, but “Polly wants a crack at her” had me on the edge of my seat. I’m excited to see where Happy Town will take us now. A lot of things happened in this episode, and there will be spoilers in this recap. Read at your own risk.

Last week’s episode ended with Henley driving off the side of the road when a large bird flew into her windshield. Henley awakes to see a concerned man peering down at her. He asks her if anything is broken “arms, legs, promises?”, and offers to drive her to a medical clinic he passed by. He’s easy on the eyes, and Henley accepts his offer, insisting that she first grab her bag (which holds that hammer she found in the attic.) He introduces himself as “Aidan” while they are driving to the clinic.

Aidan is embarrassed and Henley is amused to discover that she has been taken to a veterinarian (played by director David Cronenberg, in a cameo.) Aidan stumbles all over himself, but Henley doesn’t seem to mind. The two trot across the street to the “Knotty Woods” hotel (get it? knotty=naughty) and get it on. While Aidan is (sleeping?) Henley checks on the hammer. It’s all safe and sound.

When Aidan drives Henley back to her house, the old ladies watching in the window are stunned, because they recognize the fella.

Jimmy Kimmel Introduces New ‘LOST’ Based Game

by Matt Raub, May 13 2010 // 11:08 AM

Now that the countdown clock is ticking for the last episode of Lost to air (and everyone to be torn on the ending), even the most secretive of Lost fans are coming out of the woodwork to show their appreciation of the show in their own special ways. While Jimmy Kimmel is no secret fan, he’s certainly the most innovative.

Recapping this past week’s episode, Jimmy explained how Jacob and his mysteriously unnamed brother were stuck playing a simple game with white and black stones (signifying good vs. evil).

He then unveiled a brand new game, from the makers of Lost, which gives people stuck on an island for 2000 years a bit more to do. Check out the hilarious mock-commercial after the jump, and be sure to keep up as Lost counts down every Tuesday at 9PM on ABC.

First Trailer For Matt Damon’s ‘The Adjustment Bureau’ Goes Online

by Matt Raub, May 13 2010 // 10:00 AM

With every big-budget original idea, there always seems to be another film with a similar plot right behind it. In this case, we’ve got Chris Nolan’s Inception hitting theaters this summer, and now, along the same lines of psychological thriller, we’ve got Matt Damon in The Adjustment Bureau.

Granted, this idea came first in the form of a novel by Philip K. Dick, but it still doesn’t excuse Universal for releasing the film a few months after Inception. In Bureau, Damon plays Senate candidate David Norris who falls in love with the quirky Emily Blunt. They get together, get it on, and Damon is visited by a group of greyhairs in suits who explain that they “control how things work” and his relationship was never supposed to happen.

The film has  elements of The Matrix, Dark City, and Inception, with some potentially great performances from Mad Men and Iron Man 2′s John Slattery and Superman’s Terence Stamp. The film also comes from writer/director George Nolfi who worked with Damon on 2007′s Bourne Ultimatum, so there’s a little bit of history too.

Check out the trailer after the jump, courtesy of Yahoo Movies, and keep an eye out for The Adjustment Bureau when it hits theaters on September 17.

Get A Sneak Peek At Tonight’s ‘Supernatural’ Season Finale

by Joe Gillis, May 13 2010 // 9:00 AM

It’s been a tough season for Supernatural‘s Sam and Dean and now, as the series prepares to air its season finale tonight, things are heating up even more. To commemorate the event, our friends at The CW have sent over a couple preview clips for tonight’s episode entitled “Swan Song” and we are, of course, going to share them with you right now.

Here’s what you can expect, story wise, from tonight’s episode: “The entire season has been leading up to this showdown between good and evil. With the Apocalypse looming, Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) realize they are out of options and make heart-breaking decisions that will change their lives forever.”

Well, that does sound pretty awesome. Oh, we forgot to mention that in tonight’s episode a beloved character get’s killed. Not saying who but count on some great drama, suspense and some interesting turns in this episode. If you’re a fan of the show you don’t want to miss it.

Check out both preview videos for the episode after the jump. The Supernatural season finale airs tonight at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.

Fox Renews ‘Human Target’, ‘Lie to Me’

by Chris Ullrich, May 13 2010 // 8:00 AM

To be honest, I haven’t really watched much of Tim Roth’s show Lie to Me. However, I’m really excited for the news that Fox has apparently renewed the show Human Target. According to EW’s Michael Ausiello (who is usually right about this stuff) the network has decided that the freshmen drama needs another 13 episodes to really find an audience.

Although, as Ausiello points out, there’s no “official” word from Fox, his sources confirm that the network is about to pick up Lie to Me for a 13-episode third season. But more importantly, at least for me and probably for you too, Fox has also opted to bring back struggling freshman drama Human Target for a 13-episode second season as well.

In addition, the network will reportedly bring in former Chuck co-executive producer Matthew Miller to be the new co-showrunner alongside Jonathan Steinberg. That’s an interesting decision as I felt the show was pretty good the way it was. Usually when networks do things like this they don’t like the way the show is going creatively or they need someone who can keep costs in line (or both).

More than likely Fox is going to do with Human Target what NBC did with Chuck, cut the budget but allow it to have another season. So, in that respect, it makes perfect sense to bring in someone like Miller who has experience with a show where the budget is greatly reduced but still manages to make the show look good.

Whatever the reasons, I’m just glad Human Target is getting another chance. It’s a good show that deserves it.

MTV Movie Award Nominee List Announced

by Matt Raub, May 13 2010 // 7:00 AM

It’s that time of the year when the regular award season comes to a halt and those “other” award shows start picking up the slack. The quotes are in place due to the fact that awards like the upcoming MTV Movie Awards are only awards in the sense that the chosen winner gets a trophy. It can’t even be called a popularity contest anymore as it’s more like the ”Twilight wins while people promote their upcoming project” awards.

Last year, Twilight collected a record four awards, which is a third of the categories given. This year, there are a few others hoping to knock the shiny vamps off of the hill like Avatar and Alice in Wonderland.

Parks and Recreation star Aziz Ansari is hosting this year, so expect some solid written material for the opening monologue and more. Check out the site to vote for your favorite film and actor/actress, and be sure to catch the 2010 MTV Movie Awards Live(ish) on June 6th at 9PM/8PM Central.
