Though it was rumored months ago, Marvel Studios has officially announced that actor Hugo Weaving (Agent Smith in The Matrix, among others) has been cast as the main antagonist, the Red Skull, in Joe Johnston’s upcoming Captain America: The First Avenger.

The news doesn’t come as much of a shock, even without the rumors. Weaving has made himself known as one of the top character actors to play a marketable villain since his work in The Matrix, and has even reprrised his badassery in Michael Bay’s Transformers films as Megatron. Also, director Johnston just finished and released The Wolfman for Universal, which cast Weaving as one of the main characters.

In the film, the character is said to be an updated version of the villain we know from the comics. In this incarnation, Johann Schmidt is drafted into the Third Reich and given the codename “The Red Skull.” In the comics, Schmidt is given the name due to an accident that caused his head to be…a red skull. Whether or not they will actually put Weaving in tons of makeup has yet to be announced.

The film also stars Sebastian Stan (Hot Tub Time Machine) as Bucky Barnes, Hayley Atwell (The Prisoner) as Peggy Carter, and Chris Evans as the titular Captain America. Captain America: The First Avenger is currently set to hit theaters on July 22, 2011.

This week on The Flickcast Chris is on vacation so Matt teams up with guest host Elisabeth Rappe for all kinds of interesting discussion and debate on lots of different topics. Some of these topics include the new Jonah Hex trailer, Huge Weaving as Red Skull in Captain America, Matthew Vaughn taking on X-Men: First Class and the trailer for a new J.J. Abrams project supposedly attached to screening of Iron Man 2, which hits theaters this Friday.

Matt and Elisabeth also made some new picks this week including Elisabeth’s pick of the Western 3:10 to Yuma and Matt’s pick of the indie Sci-Fi film Moon, featuring Sam Rockwell.

Lots of people equate today with drinking Caronas, sitting outside, and celebrating a holiday nobody really understands anymore. This year, the holiday just got a little cooler, as a brand new “illegal” trailer for Machete hits the web.

When we first heard that Robert Rodriguez was going to extend his fake trailer that was attached to 2007′s Grind House, nobody really thought it would happen. Then we heard casting rumors that people like Robert De Niro, Lindsay Lohan, and Steven Seagal were attached to the film, and our belief in the film’s existence became nothing more than a “what if” situation. Until now.

The first trailer for the film, which Danny Trejo declares is in celebration of Cinco de Mayo (and for the state of Arizona) just hit the web, and is pretty much like the original trailer, until you go “Holy crap, that is De Niro, Lindsay Lohan, and Steven Seagal??”

We’ve been following George A. Romero’s Survival of the Dead since way back last November when our own Chris Ullrich saw it in Austin during Fantastic Fest. Over the last few months more info is being released about the film, including a previous poster and a trailer, and now we’ve got something very cool to share with you today.

Although it might seem like just another poster for the film, if you look closer you’ll notice something a bit special about this one. You might also recognize the artwork, especially if you happen to be a fan of zombies and comics. That’s right, The Walking Dead‘s very own artist Charlie Adlard has created this poster for the film and as is usual for his work, it looks pretty awesome.

Just to remind you about the film so you can be sure to check it out, it immediately follows the events of Diary of the Dead and concerns an island off the coast of Deleware called Plum. On the island are two families, the O’Flynn’s and the Muldoons, who are locked in a struggle for power.

The O’Flynn’s are forced to exile family patriarch Patrick (Kenneth Welsh) by boat to the mainland, where he meets up with a band of soldiers, headed by Guardsman Sarge (Alan Van Sprang). They join forces and return to the island, to find that the zombie plague has fully gripped the divided community.

With ABC’s highly complicated, occasionally contrived but always entertaining series LOST only a few episodes away form its series finale, it appears the show’s producers have more to say as the end grows near then they thought. So, to facilitate that, they have asked ABC to extend the series finale’s running time by an additional thirty minutes. The network has agreed, which brings the show to two and a half hours.

According to the report, when the LOST finale airs on Sunday, May 23rd, the episode will run from 9 to 11:30 PM, which will push back the news and have the “Jimmy Kimmel Live: Aloha to Lost” post-finale special airing at 12:05 a.m. Executive producers Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof just completed post-production on the finale — titled “The End” — on Monday night.

As is the custom these days, at the end both sent out identical Tweets: “We’re done. Amen.” In addition, Lindelof recently commented that the crew build all-new sets for the finale and promised the ending would prompt more questions.

ABC is pulling out all the stops to celebrate the ending of one of its most popular shows. In addition the the “super-sized” finale, the network is airing an “enhanced” version of the show’s original two-hour pilot on May 22. Then on Sunday the 23rd, there’s a two-hour retrospective titled “Lost: The Final Journey,” followed by the finale, then the local news and Kimmel post-show. That’s a lot of LOST.

Still, it’s nice to see the network taking the time and giving a show like LOST the opportunity to end its run gracefully. Sure, when the end does finally come, people may have more questions then answers. After all, this is LOST. But really, even if we do, isn’t that part of the fun?

Less than 24 hours ago, we brought you news that Kick-Ass director/co-writer Matthew Vaughn was in negotiations with Twentieth Century Fox about directing the upcoming prequel X-Men: First Class. It looks like the studio was happy with their meeting, as they have officially attached Vaughn as director.

From Heat Vision:

Vaughn’s involvement had been on and off, with negotiations resuming yesterday thanks to the involvement of producer Bryan Singer. Another factor had been Fox’s desire of wanting to have a finished film for next summer, making the search for a director who can deliver a quality film a priority.

On top of that, Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz, who worked on Marvel’s “Thor” movie, did a rewrite on the “First Class” script that convinced execs that making a movie for next year was possible. According to Fox, “First Class” will “chart the epic beginning of the X-Men saga. Before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time.

Before they were archenemies, they were the closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-Men.”

So not only do we have rewrites on the film, a director, and franchise helmer Singer’s stamp of approval, but the film also has a release date of June 3, 2011. This means that you can expect casting news to start pouring out over the next few weeks, as principal photography needs to start as soon as possible.

Though NBC has been the subject of ridicule due to what is now being dubbed as “The Tonight Show Conundrum”, that doesn’t seem to have phased them as they are ramping up the upcoming awards season with two new hosts.

Last week, the network announced that Ricky Gervais will be returning to host this year’s Golden Globes, making it his second year in a row as the host. On the heels of that announcement, NBC has also named Jimmy Fallon as the host of the 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards. From Live Feed:

“Jimmy was the natural choice as one of the most promising and likable young entertainers who will now have the chance to display his many talents on television’s biggest night,” said Paul Telegdy, executive vp of alternative at NBC. “His proven skills as a comedian and host — as well as his openness to new ideas — will fully engage audiences and ultimately deliver a lively Emmy telecast.”

Added executive producer Don Mischer: “Jimmy has many talents. He can sing, he can dance, he does impersonations, and he does it gracefully and with ease. I think he’ll make a terrific host and we are really looking forward to working with him.”

Now that Kick-Ass has been considered to be a financial success (even though it was still toppled by 3D Dragons), it’s inevitable that the film’s director and co-writer of the screenplay, Matthew Vaughn, would be considered a hot commodity and poached by other studios. In this instance, it could be for yet another superhero flick, as Fox is allegedly interested in Vaughn directing X-Men: First Class.

The screenplay comes from Chuck creator Josh Schwartz, who also wrote the comic series of the same title. In the book, the story takes us a few years back, as we follow the very first years of Professor Xavier’s students. This class includes a young Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast, Ice Man, and Angel.

This isn’t the first encounter that Vaughn has had with Fox and the franchise, as he was signed to direct X-Men 3: The Last Stand back in 2006 after Bryan Singer left the franchise to direct Superman Returns. Vaughn left the project soon after signing on due to family issues, but not before casting Kelsey Grammer as Beast and Vinnie Jones as Juggernaut (arguably two of the best cast roles in the film).

Now that Singer has been attached as hands-on producer of First Class alongside Lauren Shuler Donner, Fox has Schwartz and Jamie Moss writing a screenplay, and now possibly Vaughn as director, the film seems to be coming along quite well.

We expect 20th Century to make the official announcement about Vaughn and his role in production before the end of the week. Soon after that, information on casting should start rolling in, as the film is currently slated for a 2011 release.

Only half way through a 13-episode run in it’s first season, FX has already renewed Justified for another 13 episodes in a second season.

The series, which stars Deadwood’s Timothy Olyphant as a rugged U.S. Marshall Rayland Givens, who still does his job like he’s living out an episode of Gunsmoke, has gotten some impressive ratings since it’s debut back in March. From a Fox press release:

Through seven weeks, first-run episodes of Justified are averaging 3.4 million viewers and 1.7 million Adults 18-49.  The weekly multi-run average viewership for the series is 7.5 million total viewers and 3.9 million Adults 18-49 (six episodes). Justified is this year’s number-one rated new series on basic cable in delivery of Men 18-49 (1.1 million). Justified was the most-watched series premiere in FX history, with 4.9 million total viewers, surpassing The Shield’s 4.8 million total viewers (3/12/02).

The network expects the series to continue in it’s upward rising ratings as the last 6 episodes of season 1 play out. The season finale is currently set to air on June 8th.

Over the past few years, the “parody law”, which states that copyrighted licenses of popular trademarks can be used in full when stating that it is for a parody, has been used to funnel new attention and revenue into the most unlikely of markets, in the adult film industry.

It all started to be relatively harmless, with parodies of things like The Office and Star Trek, but now it’s gotten to the point where professional-looking adult productions are being made out of things like The Big Bang Theory, Glee, Tru Blood and the James Bond series.

The films have gotten quite a bit of attention from major media across the world, which has all just helped the industry turn a profit. Vivid’s newest attempt to appeal the masses is hitting shelves soon, as the first trailer for Batman XXX: A Porn Parody has just hit the web.

It’s an entertaining spoof on the classic 60′s Batman TV series, which makes sense, because spoofing Dark Knight would just be too easy.

The video is completely safe for work, sans the typical “acting” from some of the female cast members. Check it out after the jump, and if you listen close enough, you can hear Cesar Romero and Frank Gorshin spinning in their graves.
