NYAFF Review: ‘Chaw’

by Grace Suh, Jun 29 2010 // 2:00 PM

http://reikanorakuen.files.wordpress.com/2009/07/chaw-review.jpg

A gigantic, half-ton, blood-thirsty wild boar is rampaging wild on the mountain, feasting on humans dead and alive. And who is responsible for this horrific threat to Sameri, the peaceful little hamlet (self-proclaimed “the Crimeless Village”), at the foot of the mountain?

Why, Japan, of course.

Seems back in the Dark Days of the Japanese Occupation, evil Japanese scientists cross-bred the local pigs with imported swine, resulting in this monstrous strain. Because, as one character explains: when species intermix, mutation follows.

Korean Blood Purity, FTW!

This tongue-in-cheek exchange also serves as a tip of the hat to the way Bong Joon-Ho’s Host planted the blame, early and firmly, for that movie’s monster mutation, on Korea’s other favorite villain, the American Military Presence. Like an equal-opportunity Scream of Korean and Hollywood horror and action blockbusters, Shin Jung-Won’s Chaw sends up clichés, stock characters, and iconic scenes all over the place.

There’s the railway tunnel getaway, the climactic set piece in the empty factory, the obligatory massive and totally gratuitous explosion, and the premature celebration that only serves as a way to aggregate victims for the monster’s next attack.

Latest ‘Space Battleship Yamato’ Trailer Brings the Awesome

by Chris Ullrich, Jun 29 2010 // 12:00 PM

I don’t know about you, but I really liked the show Star Blazers when I was younger. Later, I found out it was adapted from a Japanese series called Space Cruiser Yamato and since that time I’ve watched pretty much all of the animated versions of this show I can find.

Now, it seems an intrepid band of Japanese filmmakers has made a live-action version of the story and bonus, it looks awesome. The film, a 2.2 billion yen production under the direction of Takashi Yamazaki looks like it follows the Yamato story pretty closely and features all of the great characters and situations I remember fondly from the shows.

Sadly, the film doesn’t have a U.S. release date as of yet. However, if more people get a chance to see this great trailer I’m sure it will be just a matter of time before we see this film here in the States. Or, I can always take a trip to Japan and see the film when it comes out on December 1st. Who’s with me?

Check out the trailer after the break. Yes, we realize it’s a scaled version. We’ll look for a bigger one and bring it to you if we can find it.

Hulu Unveils Hulu Plus Service

by Joe Gillis, Jun 29 2010 // 11:02 AM

Today, as anticipated and as we reported previously, online content provider Hulu introduced its Hulu Plus paid subscription service. It is currently in the preview stages, offering sneak peeks at the service to select users who request an invitation.

The service costs $9.99 a month and offers an big ibrary of current NBC, ABC, and FOX shows, as well as episodes from previous seasons and shows that are off the air. Hulu Plus will offer support for several devices, including Apple products like the iPad and iPhone, Internet-enabled Samsung TVs, game consoles such as the XBox 360 and PS3, and more. Videos will be presented in high definition.

So, I guess the days of free content on the Internet have been shortened once again. I wonder, though, who will actually take advantage of this service? Will you?

For more on this service, check out the full walkthrough after the break.

‘The Legend of Neil’ Season 3 Gets A Trailer

by Matt Raub, Jun 29 2010 // 10:00 AM

With so much on the Internets these days, there are plenty of web series that get lost in the fray. Whether due to poor writing, bad directing, sub-par acting or whatever, many just don’t catch on. Some, however, do manage to catch the public eye. One of those few that do is The Legend of Neil.

The online sitcom comes from Sandeep Parikh, who fans of the genre may remember as “Zaboo” from the insanely popular web series The Guild. Fans of Guild will be happy to know that Felicia Day has a recurring role on the show as well, and this series even had a musical episode last season.

What is Legend of Neil? Well, if a drunk in his late 20′s got sucked into a game of Legend of Zelda and realizes exactly how ridiculous the entire concept is, that pretty much describes the show. There’s plenty of humor for video game fans, or even just fans of swearing.

Check out the all new teaser trailer for season 3, which premieres on July 24th just in time for Comic-Con, after the jump.

Verizon Offering Droid X to Those Waiting on HTC Incredible

by Cortney Zamm, Jun 29 2010 // 9:00 AM

It’s no secret to any Android fan that the HTC Droid Incredible is one awesome piece of technology. This explains why, over two months after the phone’s release, it is almost impossible to get your hands on one. This is due largely to the fact that Samsung, who manufactures the AMOLED screens that HTC uses for the phone, cannot keep up with the incessant demand for the device.

While most people are ordering their phones and patiently waiting, Verizon is offering another option to those who’ve ordered the Incredible but just can’t seem to wait: the Droid X. Announced last week by Verizon, the Droid X has some impressive specs. With a 1 GHZ processor, a 4.3″ display, 8 MP camera with 720p video capabilities, and a multitouch keyboard, the phone certainly rivals both the HTC EVO 4G and iPhone 4.

Verizon will be releasing the Droid X on July 15th, while if you order the Incredible today it won’t be shipped until at least July 27th. Verizon is now allowing those who’ve ordered the Droid Incredible online to switch their order to the Droid X in order to get an Android device in their hands as soon as possible.

It’s definitely nice that Verizon is offering this to customers, especially those who jumped on the Incredible and realized they’d rather have the latest and greatest Droid X when it was announced a few days ago. But speaking from my experience with the Droid Incredible, it’s the best Android device I’ve ever used and is more than worth waiting a few weeks for.

Regardless, with the change from AMOLED to LCD and the release of the Droid X, the strain on HTC will helpfully be alleviated and those who are waiting for the Droid Incredible will finally be able to get one.

UPDATE: We were contacted by Verizon and they sent us this official statement regarding Incredible pre-orders:

“The Droid Incredible by HTC, as you know, definitely lives up to its name and is a fantastic device. It has proven to be very, very popular with our customers. Should a customer who has ordered a Droid Incredible decide that the Droid X (or any other device) better meets his/her needs, he/she can take advantage of the Verizon Wireless Worry Free Guarantee and choose the Droid X when it goes on sale July 15. Customers cannot pre-order the Droid X with us.”

There you have it. Does that jive with your experiences? Let us know in the comments.

Trailers for Season Four of ‘Mad Men’ Arrive

by Chris Ullrich, Jun 29 2010 // 8:00 AM

Some TV shows come and go and you wonder what happened or, in some cases, don’t really care all that much. Then, you watch a show like AMC’s Mad Men and you realize what great television can be and you count the months, weeks, days, hours minutes between the end of one season and the beginning of another.

Fortunately, the wait for new episodes of Mad Men is almost over. To commemorate this event AMC has started to get the message out about the new season with the release of a new poster and some trailers. In the poster we see Don Draper (Jon Hamm) standing in an empty office overlooking the Manhattan skyline. Obviously, this is to suggest the theme (or at least one of them) for this coming season: that of starting fresh.

This theme carries on in the trailers for the new season. Each of the characters get a fresh start at the new agency or in some other way and all of them look to be undergoing some big changes this season or, in the case of Roger Sterling (John Slattery) at least, back to his old ways: at least where drinking and smoking are concerned.

Whatever happens in these trailers, and with the season, it’s just great to see these characters and the show again. That season premiere can’t get here soon enough.

Check out all the trailers after the jump. Mad Men returns to AMC on Sunday, July 25th.

First Full ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’ Trailer Is Here

by Joe Gillis, Jun 29 2010 // 7:00 AM

Previously, we brought you a teaser for the upcoming Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part One but sadly, that video has since disappeared. Guess it wasn’t ready for the light of day. But now, thanks to the magic of the Internets, we can bring you the new full trailer for the film in all of its glory.

In this trailer we get a look at what our favorite cast of characters has been up to. Harry, Ron, Hermone and the rest, including the “Big Bad” Voldemort, are all back for another go around. And this time, with Dumbledore no longer in the picture, the stakes for the young wizard and his pals are even higher.

In fact, it looks like we’ll finally see that big fight between Harry and Voldemort we’ve all been waiting for. What will happen and how will it all end? You’ll just have to wait until the movie comes out.

Until then, check out the new trailer after the break. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part One hits theaters on November 19th. Part Two arrives in July 2011.

Game Review: ‘The Red Star’ for iPhone

by John Carle, Jun 28 2010 // 4:00 PM

The Red Star has had an interesting history. Starting off as a graphic novel by Christian Gossett, it was originally set for an XBox release. Development went as far as releasing a demo for Official XBox Magazine’s demo disk, though the release was canceled soon after. It would then be ported to the PlayStation 2 in 2004 and go into hiatus until this March where it was released as a PSP Go download only title.

Now, it has been ported over to the iPhone, with sadly, less than stellar results.

Gameplay:

As with all games, strong gameplay is essential for the success of any title. If a game is difficult to control, people just aren’t going to be able to enjoy it. Even though the game looks pretty (as will be mentioned later), the interface on the iPhone greatly hinders The Red Star.

Instead of opting for a static position D-Pad on the touch screen, players are forced to use their thumbs anywhere on the screen to direct the motion of their character in this side scrolling beat ‘em up. On the right side of the screen lies a “button” to shoot, melee or use special attacks.

Unfortunately, aiming any of these becomes a deeply frustrating process as a player will often find their left thumb gravitating towards the center of the screen to keep moving from left to right only to find they have completely covered their character and have no idea what direction they are facing (on top of blocking much of the left half of the screen with their left hand as well, giving a huge blind spot).

by Joe Gillis, Jun 28 2010 // 3:00 PM

Mr. Loeb was previously a Marvel-exclusive Eisner-Award-winning comic book writer and an Emmy-nominated writer for his work on NBC’s Heroes. The announcement was made today by Alan Fine, Executive Vice President, Office of the President and Chairman of Marvel Studios’ Creative Committee, and by Mr. Buckley, to whom Mr. Loeb will report.

Check Out Two New Clips From ‘Louie’

by Matt Raub, Jun 28 2010 // 2:00 PM

It’s very rare that a TV show gets resurrected for a second chance. Fox has been known to do this with a few of its shows, but they’re also known to pull the plug on a show about 30 seconds after they greenlight it. HBO, however, wanted to give plenty of chances to Louis C.K.’s raunchy sitcom Lucky Louie, even though it really wasn’t that good.

The show was inevitably canceled, leaving for some mixed feelings. A few years go by, Louis has a Rocky-style montage in the woods somewhere, and now he’s back and stronger than ever. Louie is basically the exact same premise as his late HBO series, with a few minor changes (including dropping that terrible laugh track). This time? The show actually looks watchable.

The series debuts on FX this Tuesday, and promises to have some pretty great cameos along the way, one of which you can see in a clip after the jump. Catch Louie on FX Tuesday, June 29th at 11pm ET/PT.
