Review: ‘Goldeneye 007′ for Wii

by Cortney Zamm, Dec 31 2010 // 2:00 PM

James Bond returns to familiar territory in Goldeneye 007 for Wii, which is a remake of the much-loved classic Goldeneye 007 for Nintendo 64. However, there’s a lot of changes in this new Wii version, and all of them are wise ones.

Daniel Craig’s Bond is now our star, and the gameplay is familiar yet foreign, allowing for a sense of nostalgia while still bringing a unique and new game to the Wii in the form of Goldeneye 007.

In Goldeneye 007 for Wii, the plot and gameplay of the Nintendo 64 game is maintained, but tailored to the Wii in a way that really works. Graphics are updated, and the story is tailored to fit Daniel Craig’s portrayal of Bond, details that make Craig’s appearance in this game make sense and bring a fresh experience to both newcomers to 007 and die-hard fans.

Transitions between gameplay and cut-scenes are seamless in this game, making it really enjoyable to experience the story of Goldeneye, whether you’re a fan of Bond or just a lover of a good ol’ fashioned shooter. Because we haven’t gotten a James Bond movie in quite some time, the top-notch cinematics and voice acting from Daniel Craig and Judie Dench almost make up for that.

The Flickcast Presents: Best of 2010 – Video Games Part 2

by John Carle, Dec 31 2010 // 9:00 AM

Earlier this week, we brought you some of our favorite and best video games of the year. We’ve got a bit more to get to, including Glitch of the Year, Most Addictive, and even the penultimate Game of the year. Here we go!

Glitch of the Year – Fallout: New Vegas – The Spinning Head

Games will have glitches. It is expected. With millions upon millions of lines of code, it is impossible to hammer out every minute detail. Thankfully with internet connectivity, these can often be fixed even the first day of a game’s release with a patch. One of the most surprising glitches to make it to retail however is the spinning head from Fallout: New Vegas. What makes this glitch most shocking is how early in the game it takes place. It is a sad mistake on the part of the normally expert team of Obsidian Entertainment who normally puts forth such high quality games. While some glitches add some humor to a title, this one is just plain weird and completely unnecessary.

Skype 3.0 Brings Video Calling to 3G, iOS Devices

by Chris Ullrich, Dec 30 2010 // 9:30 AM

Even with the recent outage, it’s no secret lots of people use Skype to make calls on a daily basis. It’s also no secret many of those calls are video chats. However, if you wanted to video chat using your iPhone and all you had was a 3G signal, you were out of luck — even with Apple’s Facetime. That is until today.

Today Skype announced a new version of its iOS client simply titled Skype 3.0. The new update brings several improvements and, most notably, adds the ability to make and receive video-calls from your supported iOS device over both 3G and Wi-Fi networks. And while that’s great news when you can’t find a WiFi signal, I would take anything reported to work over AT&T’s 3G network with a big grain of salt. In other words, your mileage may vary.

Check out the full press release after the jump.

The Flickcast Presents: Best of 2010 – Video Games Part 1

by John Carle, Dec 30 2010 // 7:30 AM

Last year, we took a more traditional approach with our Best Video Games of 2009 article with categories such as Best Music Game or Best Action Platformer. This year we are going to depart from the traditional and give what we think are categories that truly deserve to be rewarded their due.

Best Use of Zombies / Best Downloadable Content – Red Dead Redemption “Undead Nightmare”

The ultimate “What If” scenario brought forth to one of the best games of 2010, “What if the undead invaded the old west?” And the answer doesn’t just involve a lot of people dying. There are horses of the apocalypse, big foot, some hard choices to be made and people turning on or abandoning their fellow man left and right.

This awesome story told over the revamped look of Red Dead Redemption using characters players have already grown to know, love or despise makes Undead Nightmare not only the best zombie game of 2010 but also the best exmple of DLC for the entire year as well.

Check Out a New Clip from ‘The Mechanic’ With Jason Statham

by Chris Ullrich, Dec 29 2010 // 1:30 PM

Based on the original film featuring Charles Bronson and Jan Michael Vincent, this new take on The Mechanic features Jason Statham as Arthur Bishop and Ben Foster as Steve — a master assassin and his apprentice. When his mentor and close friend Harry (Donald Sutherland) is murdered, Bishop’s mission is clear: He wants those responsible dead.

His mission is complicated when Harry’s son Steve approaches him with the same vengeful goal and a determination to learn Bishop’s trade. Bishop has always acted alone but he can’t turn his back on Harry’s son. So, the two decide to work together and, of course, stuff starts to blow up.

To get you in the mood for the film we’ve got a new clip from it to share with you today. In it we get a look at the characters and how they are going to deal with on of the people who may, or may not, have had a hand in Harry’s death. Check out the clip after the jump.

The Mechanic, featuring Jason Statham, Ben Foster, Tony Goldwyn and Donald Sutherland, hits theaters on January 28.

Fan Film: Duke Nukem Gets Resurrected in ‘The Duke: Fate of Humanity’

by Matt Raub, Dec 29 2010 // 12:00 PM

With any true fan film, the one element that needs to stand out above all else is that pure “fan” element that is embedded in the source material any aspiring director decides to adapt into a short film.

That’s what director Paul J. Helin of New Dawn Productions had in mind with his short film The Duke: Fate of Humanity, focusing on one of the most bad ass video game characters of all time: Duke Nukem.

All shot on the Red One, the film has incredible cinematic shots, but not much of a geeky pay off, which could very well come down the line if we get a longer version.

Check out the possibly NSFW (not really) fan film after the jump, and keep an eye out for more from New Dawn Productions.

‘Source Code’ Gets An International Trailer

by Sebastian Suchecki, Dec 29 2010 // 10:30 AM

Sci-Fi is the new action in 2011 as one of the bigger films, Duncan Jones’ Source Code has gotten it’s second, and International trailer. This is Jones’ second major science fiction release after last year’s thriller Moon. The film follows a pretty simple premise…for sci-fi nerds.

When decorated soldier Captain Colter Stevens wakes up in the body of an unknown man, he discovers he’s part of a mission to find the bomber of a Chicago commuter train. In an assignment unlike any he’s ever known, he learns he’s part of a government experiment called the ‘Source Code,” a program that enables him to cross over into another man’s identity in the last 8 minutes of his life. With a second much larger target threatening to kill millions in Downtown Chicago, Colter relives the incident over and over again, gathering clues each time, until he can solve the mystery of who is behind the bombs and prevent the next attack.

A little bit Twelve Monkeys, a little bit Quantum Leap, with the charm of Jake Gyllenhaal and the unique guerrilla directing style of Duncan Jones. Check out the new international trailer after the jump, and catch Source Code in theaters on April 15th.

Stars of ‘The Cape’ Wish Fans Happy Holidays and Offer Previews of the New Show

by Chris Ullrich, Dec 29 2010 // 9:00 AM

After a few months of previews, trailers and more, we are still not exactly sure what to make of NBC’s upcoming new series The Cape. We are always glad to see new superhero-centric shows on mainstream TV networks. Plus, NBC is the former home of Heroes, which was a great show for at least the first season.

So, we tend to give NBC the benefit of the doubt when it comes to these types of programs. Let’s hope that pays off with a show we can enjoy and that’s a success. In the meantime, we’ve got a couple more videos featuring the show’s stars, including leads David Lyons and the beautiful Summer Glau, to share with you today.

In these videos, the stars give holiday greetings and also offer a bit more insight into the show and their characters. Check out both videos after the break. The Cape premieres on January 9th.

‘Empire Strikes Back’ and ‘Airplane’ Make The National Historic Registry

by Joe Gillis, Dec 29 2010 // 7:30 AM

Some films deserve to make the record books or be encapsulated forever in history books, and some films are Big Mama’s House 2. Luckily, the National Historic Registry hasn’t selected that film, but instead is including 25 films on their list for 2010 and immortalizing some of Hollywood’s best of the past few decades. From THR:

The films, which include Hollywood classics, documentaries, innovative shorts and genres from virtually every era of American filmmaking, span the period 1891-1996. This year’s selections bring the number of films in the registry to 550.

George Lucas’ 15-minute student film — Electronic Labyrinth: THX 1138 4EB, made in 1967 at USC — also made the list, as did The Empire Strikes Back, his much-lauded 1980 Star Wars sequel that was directed by Irvin Kershner.

Other classics such as Airplane, The Exorcist, and All the President’s Men also made the list of soon to be immortalized films. Check out the complete list after the jump.

Amazon Kindle Best Selling Product of All Time on Amazon.com

by Chris Ullrich, Dec 28 2010 // 1:30 PM

Watch out iPad, the Amazon Kindle is gunning for you and is trying to take away your shiny luster. How? By being a big success that’s how.

To that point Amazon announced yesterday that its third-generation Kindle eBook reader is now the best-selling product of all time on the Amazon.com website. It replaces Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the previous Amazon.com sales record-holder.

The online giant Amazon has not revealed official sales figures for any of its Kindle devices, though recent estimates suggest Amazon is going to sell 8 million Kindles in 2010. Which, in case you don’t know, is a lot of eBook readers.

The company currently offers two versions of its popular Kindle eReader — a Wi-Fi-only version for $139 and a 3G-equipped model for $189. Click through to check out the full press release from Amazon.
