‘Captain Planet’ Finally Done in Live Action and Played by Don Cheadle!

by Matt Raub, Aug 31 2011 // 2:31 PM

Those who grew up in the 80s remember the classic pro-earth propaganda cartoon series Captain Planet and the Planeteers fondly. Whether it was living through the Planeteer that you related to the most, or just being a huge fan of a superhero that turned grime into healthy plants, the show was a nostalgic hit.

Most recently, there have been more and more rumblings that a live-action film based on the adventures of Captain Planet and how he would clean up our current society in their polluted, disrespectful ways.

We’re a few years away from seeing anything happen with this film, but that hasn’t stopped world-renowned actor Don Cheadle from putting together a web short in which he shows how he’d play the character. Here’s a hint, it’s not as campy as it was 20 years ago.

Check out the Funny or Die short after the jump, and see if you can find some pretty cool cameos in the video as well (perhaps a Community student and friend of Napoleon Dynamite?). Let’s hope that the studio sees this and takes Cheadle’s take on the hero to heart.

Comic Review: DC’s New ‘Justice League #1′

by Jason Inman, Aug 31 2011 // 12:32 PM

This is it. This is the issue that everyone has been waiting for since DC Comics announced that it was relaunching its entire line with all number one issues. History is made as DC has swept most of its history under the rug. The characters are fresh, shiny, and inviting for the general public. As a first issue and introduction to the new DC Universe, how is it? Minor spoilers below.

Five Years Ago…

The issue begins with that tagline as we see the police chasing Batman who is chasing a cloaked figure across rooftops. The police fire on Batman and the cloaked figure. Thankfully, Green Lantern shows up to knock the cloaked figure off the roof, and save the Batman. Most of the book is spent with Batman and Green Lantern talking, and getting to know each other. GL quizzes Batman about what superpowers he possesses. While Batman proves himself by stealing Green Lantern’s ring right off of his hand, a brilliant character moment.

They Say He’s An Alien…

Batman and Green Lantern are able to track the cloaked figure. Who plants an alien bomb, but not before revealing who his master is. (Hint, think about a very tall Superman villain that was created by Jack Kirby, and whose name rhymes with rawhide.) The two survive, and decide to talk to an alien that lives in Metropolis and no longer wears his underwear on the outside.

It’s Political Sabotage in a New Clip from ‘The Ides of March’

by Sebastian Suchecki, Aug 31 2011 // 10:00 AM

Voting season is creeping up on us, which means we’re in store for a few “Oscar grab” political thrillers in which some of Hollywood’s elite take on a few stories ripped from the headlines or a topical political book. Who’s the man for the job? Clooney, of course.

The film focuses on several big names in H-Wood’s current “top 100″ list, including Clooney, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti, Marisa Tomei, and Ryan Gosling. Here’s the film’s premise.

The Ides of March takes place during the frantic last days before a heavily contested Ohio presidential primary, when an up-and-coming campaign press secretary (Ryan Gosling) finds himself involved in a political scandal that threatens to upend his candidate’s shot at the presidency.

Yes, you can expect a face-off between Clooney and Gosling. Anyone else find it strange that Clooney manages to work his way into a film with whoever the current rising star is? Coincidence? We think not.

Take a look at the official clip, titled “My Name is Molly”, after the jump, and catch The Ides of March in theaters on October 7th.

U.S. Government Sues to Block AT&T, T-Mobile Merger

by Joe Gillis, Aug 31 2011 // 9:00 AM

To be honest, I’m surprised it took this long. But now it seems our government here in the U.S. has finally decided to take action and attempt to stop a merger that should not take place anyway.

That’s right, the government has filed a lawsuit in an attempt to block AT&T’s proposed $39 Billion acquisition of T-Mobile USA. According to the complaint, such a deal would “substantially lessen competition” in the U.S. wireless market. Bloomberg reports that the complaint was filed with the U.S. Justice Department on Wednesday, and the government is asking for a declaration that the proposed merger would violate U.S. antitrust laws.

“AT&T’s elimination of T-Mobile as an independent, low- priced rival would remove a significant competitive force from the market,” the U.S. said in its filing. AT&T has argued that it needs T-Mobile’s spectrum in order to improve service quality and cover the majority of the U.S. population with 4G LTE service.

Well, I can understand them wanting to improve service quality. However, competition is good and as long as T-Mobile is around, AT&T will have to work that much harder. That won’t hurt them one bit. In fact, it might just help them.

Details Announced for ‘Green Lantern’ Blu-Ray Release

by Matt Raub, Aug 31 2011 // 8:00 AM

For those who weren’t completely burned out on this year’s cornocopia of big-budget super hero flicks, you may have truly enjoyed Warner’s shot at an intergalactic actioner in Green Lantern.

There were some mixed emotions about the flick, but overall it was a solid adaptation of the timeless comic protagonist, and only boosted the credibility of rising actors like Ryan Reynolds and Peter Sarsgaard.

For those who missed the movie, you’ll get to experience the whole thing for the first time on Blu-Ray in both an extended cut and its original theatrical cut. Here’s the lowdown.

“Green Lantern” will be available on Blu-ray 3D Combo Pack, featuring a 3D hi-definition, a hi-definition, a standard definition and a digital copy of the theatrical film, for $40.99, Blu-ray Combo Pack, featuring a hi-definition, a standard definition and a digital copy of the theatrical film, for $35.99 and on single disc DVD for $28.98.   The extended cut will be in hi-definition on the Blu-ray 3D Combo Pack and Blu-ray Combo Pack only.

Not only will the film be released on Blu-Ray and standard DVD, but the new UltraViolet Digital Copy will be included in the release. Check out details of what’s on the discs after the jump and catch the release on October 14th.

Behind the Scenes of ‘Spider-Man: Edge of Time’ with Josh Keaton & Katee Sackhoff

by John Carle, Aug 31 2011 // 7:00 AM

Last time we got behind the scenes with Val Kilmer and Laura Vandervoort about their roles as Spider-Man: Edge of Time’s top baddy and Mary Jane, respectively. Now, Beenox has released a special interview with the voice of Peter Parker a.k.a. The Amazing Spider-Man, Josh Keaton. Fans of Spider-Man will recognize Josh as the voice of Ultimate Spider-Man in Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions as well as Spider-Man in both Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and the Spectacular Spider-Man animated series. Also in this series of interviews is Katee Sackhoff who voices the Black Cat.

Along with its latest set of screen shots from PAX, Josh talks briefly about the encounters of Spider-Man: Edge of Time and how it will effect gameplay. As has been emphasized, actions taking place in the modern day will affect the world of 2099. He also talks about how the game is a race against time and if players don’t succeed, Spider-Man will die.

One piece of information that is news to everyone from Katee Sackhoff’s interview is that the Black Cat appearing in the game isn’t everyone’s modern day Felicia Hardy, but instead is a future version of the Black Cat that has been cloned over and over. Visually, she doesn’t seem to have as drastic a visual change as the Spider-Men of each time period does. The cloning process has shattered some of her personality which keeps some aspects like the sexual tension between the two present but on top of a splintered psyche.

Spielberg, King and Showtime Going ‘Under the Dome’

by Chris Ullrich, Aug 30 2011 // 3:12 PM

In the interest of full disclosure, I have to reveal I’ve had Stephen King’s Under the Dome on my Kindle for about a year and still haven’t gotten around to reading it. Not that I think it won’t be good, it’s just that other things have come up.

Fortunately, it seems I may not ever have to bother reading the book. Why? Well, today it was announced Showtime is partnering with Steven Spielberg and Stephen King for an Under the Dome drama TV series, which will be produced by DreamWorks Television.

In case you haven’t had the time either and don’t know the story of Under the Dome, it’s a supernatural thriller which revolves around locals at a Maine vacation spot who battle one another when a force field suddenly surrounds their town and cuts them off from the rest of the world. Wasn’t that the premise of an old Twilight Zone episode? Huh.

Anyway, now that the deal appears to be done with Showtime, the search is now underway for a writer (or writers) to adapt the novel into series form. No word yet on who that may be.

However, if I may make a suggestion, I hear Frank Darabont is available. I think he would be a great choice.

Showtime, you listening?

Own Your Very Own Turbine Powered Batmobile

by Chris Ullrich, Aug 30 2011 // 10:41 AM

This comes directly from the “things we would love to have when we’re filthy rich” department. Yes, we have one of those here at The Flickcast. Doesn’t everyone?

To what lust-inducing thing of beauty am I referring? Well, be sure you’re sitting down because this one is pretty impressive. I’m talking, of course, about a turbine powered Keaton-era Batmobile.

Designed and built by Casey Putsch, the car is a hand-made repliaca of the famous vehicle powered by the same Boing engine used in a Navy drone helicopter. Sadly (but good for someone else) Putsch has decided it’s time for his creation to go to someone else.

So, what do you do with your turbine powered Batmobile when you want to sell it? You put it on eBay of course.

The price? Well, as they say, if you have to ask you can’t afford it. Okay, it’s $620,000. Start looking under those sofa cushions.

Also, click through for a video of the car in action.

Josh Brolin to Star in Spike Lee’s ‘Oldboy’ Remake

by Matt Raub, Aug 30 2011 // 9:15 AM

Nine out of ten times, when we hear about a foreign film being remade for American audiences, we here at The Flickcast are the first to agree that it will likely be terrible, and won’t do the original any justice. Then we heard that the remake of Oldboy will be taken on by acclaimed director Spike Lee.

Needless to say, we were intrigued. Now, the story is only getting better, as Jonah Hex himself, Josh Brolin, has been announced to take on the lead of the project. Here’s what Deadline has on the scoop.

It’s official: Brolin will topline the Mandate Pictures redo, which begins production in March. Brolin, who just wrapped Men in Black 3 with Will Smith, next begins work on Warner Bros’ Gangster Squad.

The new Oldboy has script adapted by Mark Protosevich, who will co-produce. Roy Lee and Doug Davison will produce via Vertigo Entertainment with Lee’s 40 Acres & A Mule. Mandate president Nathan Kahane will executive produce.

‘Goldeneye 007: Reloaded’ Mi6 Trailer and New Screens Revealed

by John Carle, Aug 30 2011 // 8:15 AM

At Comic Con, we got our first look at the gameplay of the next-gen console upgrade of the Goldeneye franchise with Goldeneye 007: Reloaded. At PAX, Activision has released the first official trailer for the game’s Mi6 mode which we were only able to see in person in San Diego and were unfortunately unable to share with you until now.

From everything we have seen, Goldeneye 007: Reloaded does an awesome job of capturing the feel of the classic Goldeneye experience and updating it to the modern era. The question remains however if the game has evolved with the times to capture the interest of those who loved it so many years ago.

In addition to the game’s classic story (that is often forgotten because of the heavy nostalgia for the game’s multiplayer) will be the Mi6 mode. Almost in the way that Special Ops mode was added to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Mi6 will be a series of missions for players to tackle outside of the standard story. It will add more play time to the single player experience as well as increase the value for people who had already experienced the classic story years ago, giving them something all new.

Take a look at the trailer and gallery below and make sure to let us know your thoughts on Goldeneye 007: Reloaded coming this fall for the XBox 360 and PlayStation 3 from Activision and Eurocom.

First Teaser for ‘The Hunger Games’ Finally Hits the Web

by Matt Raub, Aug 30 2011 // 7:00 AM

Big book franchises are all the rage these days, obviously. Harry Potter is now out of theaters, Twilight only has another year left in it, and now it’s time for a brand new franchise to take over Hollywood, in the shape of kids fighting to eat in a post-apocalyptic world.

For those who aren’t aware, here’s the film’s synopsis, based on the first book in the trilogy by Suzanne Collins.

Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games. Part twisted entertainment, part government intimidation tactic, the Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which “Tributes” must fight with one another until one survivor remains.

Pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives, Katniss is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy. If she’s ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

The first teaser trailer doesn’t give us much (just a “tease”, if you will), but it’s certainly enough to get us excited for the film’s release on March 23rd, 2012.

War Movie Mondays: ‘The Eagle Has Landed’

by Douglas Barnett, Aug 29 2011 // 11:00 AM

This week’s pick is director John Sturges’s classic World War II thriller The Eagle Has Landed. The film stars some of Hollywood’s best talent: Michael Caine (Col. Kurt Steiner), Donald Sutherland (Liam Devlin), Donald Pleasence (Heinrich Himmler), Robert Duvall (Col. Max Radl) Jenny Agutter (Molly), Anthony Quayle (Adm. Canaris), Jean Marsh (Mrs. Grey), Treat Williams (Capt. Clark), and Larry Hagman (Col. Pitts).

The Eagle Has Landed supposes the theory that a team of German commandos clandestinely enters England and kidnaps Prime Minister Winston Churchill (the least heavily guarded world leader) and hold him for ransom in order to make the British sue for peace, thus allowing the Germans to continue on as the masters of Europe.

Amazed by the rescue mission to free Italian dictator Benito Mussolini from his mountain prison, Hitler proposes the idea to kidnap Churchill. The high command brings in architect colonel Radl (Duvall) to devise the plan in how to kidnap Churchill. Radl settles on Col. Kurt Steiner (Caine) a decorated paratrooper whose anti-Nazi reputation and crack unit are just the ones to pull off a mission considered too risky.
