Check Out a Preview of Warren Ellis’ ‘Secret Avengers #17, Plus Issue #16 Sells Out

by Chris Ullrich, Sep 2 2011 // 9:00 AM

If there’s one particular Marvel comics series I’ve been enjoying for the last many months it’s Secret Avengers. The story and characters really seem to resonate with me and I really like where the series is going.

As pleased as I am with the series I was even more intrigued to learn that one of my favorite writers, Warren Ellis, was taking over the scripting duties on it. That work has now arrived with Secret Avengers #16 and, not surprisingly, it was hugely successful. In fact, it sold out and is going back for a second printing.

That second printing hits store shelves on September 28th. But wait, there’s more.

To get you interested in this great arc, we’ve got a preview for Ellis’ next issue for you today. In this one, Ellis is joined by artist Kev Walker and sends Steve Rogers and his team to Eastern Europe to stop a global bio-threat.

Can’t wait to check that one out. Sounds awesome.

Check out the preview for Secret Avengers #17 after the break. Look for it in comic store on September 28th too.

Marvel Reveals the New Spider-Man Tomorrow, But We’ve Got a Preview Now

by Joe Gillis, Aug 2 2011 // 10:00 AM

That’s right folks, for the first time in marvel history someone other than Peter Parker will be taking on the role of Spider-Man in the upcoming comic Ultimate Comics Fallout #4, which will be released tomorrow. You’ve heard the rumors and followed the story as it developed. Now, it can be revealed that the new Spider-Man is named Miles Morales and he’s a new kind of hero for a new kind of world.

Here’s the scoop direct from Marvel:

Meet Miles Morales, a seemingly normal teenager from New York who will soon discover that with great power comes great responsibility…and even greater danger! But just what are the secrets behind Miles’ shocking abilities? What’s his connection to the original Spider-Man? And just why does he wear that costume? Courtesy of superstars Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli, Ultimate Comics Fallout #4 begins the story that’ll have everyone talking for years to come!

“When the opportunity arose to create a new Spider-Man, we knew it had to be a character that represents the diversity—in background and experience—of the twenty-first century,” said Axel Alonso, Marvel Editor in Chief. “Miles is a character who not only follows in the tradition of relatable characters like Peter Parker, but also shows why he’s a new, unique kind of Spider-Man—and worthy of that name.”

“The chance for the world to join a new Spider-Man as he discovers what that means in this modern world is one of the most challenging and crazy fun opportunities I’ve had as a writer,” explained Brian Bendis. “The Ultimate Comics Universe according to Miles is completely unique. I can’t wait to write every issue and I can’t wait for people to start reading them.”

Intrigued? Of course you are. Check out some preview pages for the comic after the jump. Look for Ultimate Comics Fallout #4 in your local comic shop tomorrow and Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #1 on September 14.

SDCC11: Robert Kirkman’s SKYBOUND Panel Talks Walking Dead, Super Dinosaur, Invincible and More!

by Erik Jensen, Jul 24 2011 // 9:00 AM

Robert Kirkman is perhaps best known for his hugely popular Walking Dead series, a long-running comic franchise that last year won the 2010 Eisner Award for Best Continuing Series and just last fall landed its own TV-series on AMC. And yet, Kirkman’s SKYBOUND imprint over at Image Comics has been churning out one huge comic hit after another that have absolutely nothing to do with zombies.

I hit the SKYBOUND panel on Friday in sunny Downtown San Diego to find out just what the small company has been up to lately. With Kirkman heading up the panel, also on tap were ”The Infinite” artist Rob Liefeld, “Thief of Thieves” co-writer Nick Spencer, as well as Brandon Seifert and artist Lukas Ketner of Skybound’s recently launched “Witch Doctor” series.

The panel started with an overview of how the imprint is doing, with clear winners Walking Dead and Invincible hitting the biggest numbers in terms of sales. Kirkman’s own all-ages series “Super Dinosaur” has been rapidly gaining popularity, especially among the younger readers out there.

I may not necessarily be the comic’s core demographic, but an armor-clad, missile-equipped tyrannosaurus rex named Super Dinosaur sounds pretty damn cool in my book. I made a note to pick up an issue or two next time I hit my local comics store.

Get Your First Look at Marvel’s ‘Ultimate Comics X-Men’ #1

by Joe Gillis, Jul 14 2011 // 2:00 PM

We cover a lot of things here at The Flickcast and one of them is comics. Sadly, we don’t get to do as much comics coverage as we would like but we still try to bring you cool stuff when we see it.

Case in point this time is a preview for Marvel’s upcoming series Ultimate Comics X-Men with issue number one. From writer Nick Spencer and artist Paco Medina comes a story featuring Iceman, Kitty Pride and the Human Torch “who discover the true history of the x-gene as the divide between Mankind and Mutantkind grows deeper than ever before.”

“Who are the X-Men and how will they handle the fallout of this universe shattering discovery?” That’s just something you’re going to have to find out for yourself when the first issue arrives.

Judging from the preview images, it looks to be a very cool series. We’re looking forward to it.

Check out the preview after the jump. Look for Ultimate Comics X-Men in comic book stores on September 14th.

by Joe Gillis, Jun 30 2011 // 3:42 PM

It may come as a surprise to some of you but in addition to watching our favorite marvel characters on the big screen we also like reading their adventures in comic book form. Some of our favorite characters of all time are the X-Men and we’ve enjoyed their various exploits and incarnations in comics featuring over the years.

With story by Rick Remender and art by Mark Brooks and Dean White, issue #12 deals with the “Dark Angel Saga” and centers on the X-Force “who must find a Celestial Life Seed before Archangel succumbs to the darkness within him.”

“But when the alternate reality’s twisted versions of Earth’s mightiest stand in their way – will they be too late? Can they halt the coming of a new Apocalypse?” Now that sounds good.

Get Your First Look at Marvel’s ‘Ultimate Comics Ultimates’ #1

by Joe Gillis, Jun 27 2011 // 12:15 PM

In the world of Marvel comics I’ve always been more of a fan of Marvel’s Ultimates version of its Universe. I’m not sure why but maybe it’s the stark realism of that Universe or maybe it’s just Nick Fury looking like Samuel L. Jackson.

Whatever the reason, I like it. So, glad to see Marvel is coming out with another comic that takes place in that world called Ultimate Comics Ultimates. Here’s the scoop:

From the critically acclaimed creative team of Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribic comes a comic where Iron Man, Hawkeye, Nick Fury & Thor are back together after the monumental events of Ultimate Comics Fallout. One of the biggest villains that ever faced the Ultimate Universe has returned. But with a teammate out of action, can the remaining members save the world as they struggle to find their place in the Ultimate Universe?

Yep, that sounds pretty good to me. This is one I’ll be picking up as soon as I can.

Check out the preview pages after the jump. Pick up Ultimate Comics Ultimates #1 in stores on August 24th.

Get Your First Look at Marvel’s ‘Fear Itself: FF’ #1

by Joe Gillis, Jun 24 2011 // 1:30 PM

With the Fantastic Four, and the rest of the Marvel U, in chaos it was only a matter of time before things came to a head with an epic battle. Now, that time has come with Marvel’s Fear Itself: FF.

Written by Cullen Bunn with art by Tom Grummett, FI: FF tells the story of Ben Grimm (aka The Thing) who has been deemed “worthy” by the villainous Serpent and now it’s up to the FF to put an end to his rampage.

But do the FF have a prayer at prying their friend from the God of Fear’s grasp? I’m going to guess it end up being a lot harder than they think. Plus, there will probably be a lot of damage, both physical and emotional, before its all done. Whatever happens, it looks to be epic.

We’ve got preview pages for this comic for you today. Naturally, you can check them out right after the break.

Fear Itself: FF #1 hits comic book stores on August 3rd. We’ll be reading.

Raymond E. Feist’s ‘Magician: Master’ Debuts Exclusively On Marvel Comics App

by Chris Ullrich, Jun 21 2011 // 3:45 PM

Having read and enjoyed author Raymond E. Feist’s Riftwar Saga for many years, I have to admit I was pretty excited to learn it was being made into a comic from Marvel. Now my level of excitement has risen even higher with the announcement that the comic based on the second book of the series, Magician: Master, will make its debut exclusively on the Marvel Comics app.

Harvey Award-winning writer Bryan J. Glass, along with breakout artists Tim Seeley and Hugo Petrus, have adapted the story for comics. In case you’re not familiar with it, here’s bit about the comic from Marvel’s official release:

As the fate of Midkemia hangs in the balance. Now three distant friends—a magician, a warrior and a prince—must reunite for the greatest battle of their lives and possibly make the ultimate sacrifice. Can Pug, Tomas and Arutha come together to save Crydee one more time? Or will the mighty kingdom fall?

“Magician: Master is the first full-length series from Marvel to be published on the Marvel Comics app before arriving in stores,” explained David Gabriel, Senior Vice-President of Sales. “Given both Raymond E. Feist’s worldwide popularity and success of Magician: Apprentice and Riftwar, Magician: Master seemed a natural choice for our first app-exclusive series.”

Feist said, “I am both pleased and excited at having Magician: Master selected to be the first full digital exclusive series chosen by Marvel to be available on the Marvel Comics app worldwide. The creative talent involved makes me proud to see what other creative forces can do with my imaginings.”

This five part limited series will be released weekly on the Marvel Comics app for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch beginning today. Check out some preview pages after the break.
