The First ‘Hobbit’ One-Sheet Has Been Released

by Jonathan Weilbaecher, Dec 22 2011 // 3:00 PM

There have been a lot of Hobbit related stories in the last few days, including the debut of the first teaser for the film. Now in addition to that first footage we are also getting the first one-sheet for the film, just in time for the Christmas cinema rush.

The poster does a great job evoking the sense of starting a grand adventure, and the focus on just Bilbo in Bag End is appropriate. Compared to the first Lord of the Rings one-sheet that focused on Frodo and the ring, this poster feels right as the beginning of the whole saga. The dutch angle and harsh lighting might seem a rather odd choice at first, but then you realize how off putting an uncomfortable leaving the Shire is for Bilbo and it all makes sense.

Everything we have seen from this movie up to this point has been amazing, it is finally starting to feel like there is a new Peter Jackson directed Tolkien film coming in less than a year. This poster helps set the tone for a two year adventure that brings us back into the glorious world of Middle Earth.

You can see The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey next year and the full poster after the jump.

Two New Horrifying Viral Videos for ‘Paranormal Activity 3′ Hit The Web

by Matt Raub, Sep 28 2011 // 7:00 AM

It all started as a little, micro-budget horror flick 3 years ago, that has now become a phenomenon (pun intended) and one highly anticipated trilogy. Oren Peli’s Paranormal Activity is just that, and the viral marketing campaign for the upcoming third installment is just beginning.

Over the weekend, several news outlets received a VHS tape and VCR in the mail that had some pretty scary stuff on it. Just enough to get you to pee yourself with both fear and anticipation for what the next film has to bring us.

Here’s what we can look forward to in terms of a story.

The third film takes place in 1988, when Katie and Kristi were kids. While trying to get video proof of Bloody Mary, Katie and Kristi are first confronted by the monstrous demon haunting them in the first and second movies along with their family.

Check out two of the static-filled videos after the jump, and catch Paranormal Activity 3 in theaters on October 21st.

Muppets Continue Their Viral Adventure with ‘The Fuzzy Pack’ Trailer

by Matt Raub, May 27 2011 // 7:00 AM

Summer is here, which means viral marketing is at its peak. And who doesn’t love viral marketing for a movie starring the Muppets? The answer is nobody. That’s why Disney has been on top of things with their viral strategy this week with the Green with Envy trailer earlier this week, and now a new trailer for The Fuzzy Pack.

This trailer isn’t nearly as ingenious as Envy, and it looks like it’ll be capitalizing on the obvious success of this weekend’s Hangover Part 2. (“The Fuzzy Pack” is an obvious riff on “The Wolf Pack”.)

The things this trailer does give us? Proof that both Wanda Sykes and Danny Trejo can still be awesome and hilarious in a movie starring felt puppets.

Take a look at the new trailer after the jump and join in the Muppety chaos on November 23rd.

Marvel Mocks Volkswagon’s ‘Little Darth Vader’ Commercial with ‘Little Thor’

by Sebastian Suchecki, Apr 25 2011 // 8:00 AM

While we may have brought you a very spoilerific Thor video on Friday, we can assure you that this one won’t ruin anything for you. Back during the Super Bowl, Volkswagon had one of the better commercials of the night with their Little Darth Vader spot.

Now Marvel is taking a page from their book with their very own Little Thor commercial. It almost seems like it could be a normal commercial, with the exception that not many kids would want to dress up like The God of Thunder on a whim (at least not yet).

The end of the commercial also has a bit of a WTF ending that may not have gone over so well if this were a real car commercial. Fortunately, its just a spoof — and a pretty funny one at that.

The real Thor is set to hit May 3rd and stars Chris Hemsworth as the title character. Alongside Hemsworth, the film stars Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Kat Dennings, Clark Gregg, Idris Elba, Ray Stevenson, Rene Russo, and Tom Hiddleston.

Until then, enjoy the commercial after the jump.

Rainn Wilson and Ellen Page Help Fight Crime At SXSW

by Matt Raub, Apr 20 2011 // 2:30 PM

It may be about a month over, but that hasn’t stopped the marketing machine for James Gunn’s Super from bringing us some great internet material to enjoy while still pimping out the film.

In this case, said marketing is in the form of both Rainn Wilson and Ellen Page (the film’s heroes) fighting crime in Austin, TX for this year’s South by Southwest film festival.

The film stars Wilson, Page, Kevin Bacon, Michael Rooker, Liv Tyler, and Nathan Fillion in a very dark, very hilarious look at a regular nobody who decides to take justice into his own clenched fist.

Take a look at the clip of Wilson taking to the streets of Austin after the jump, and catch Super in theaters everywhere and on demand via Comcast, Cox, Cablevision, Time Warner, and Bright House.

New Vampire Drama ‘Stake Land’ Goes Viral

by Matt Raub, Apr 12 2011 // 10:00 AM

Who doesn’t love a good viral marketing campaign? We sure do. That’s exactly what is going on with Jim Mickle’s upcoming vampire flick, Stake Land. That’s right: vampires and viral videos. Get ready to explode, internet.

The film stars modern horror queen Danielle Harris, and comes from a place where vampires rule the world and are a complete plague on humanity, and not just shiny, shirtless guys with big hair who date high school girls. Here’s the official synopsis.

America is a lost nation. When an epidemic of vampirism strikes, humans find themselves on the run from vicious, feral beasts. Cities are tombs and survivors cling together in rural pockets, fearful of nightfall. When his family is slaughtered, young Martin (Gossip Girl’s Connor Paolo) is taken under the wing of a grizzled, wayward hunter (In the Cut’s Nick Damici) whose new prey are the undead.

The film hits theaters on April 22nd, but you can get a taste of what you’re in store for with their viral video after the jump in which a young aspiring filmmaker attempts to shoot a home video with his father, until he notices a change in him, and not for the better.

‘Prototype 2′ Teaser Trailer Answers One of Life’s Deepest Questions

by John Carle, Feb 28 2011 // 8:30 AM

Penny Arcade is known for their stirring satyrical commentary of the video game and geek world. Back when Prototype was released, they posed the question: “In Prototype, you can do karate kick on a helicopter. What the f**k else do you want?” When we played through the game, we would have been hard pressed to come up with an answer. Now, the good folks at Activision and Radical have found it for us.

Even though it is at least a year away with a 2012 release date, we are keeping a eye out for any information we can get about Prototype 2. This time, without going head to head with Infamous, Prototype 2 will get a chance to shine on its own as the story of the antihero in a world gone mad. We hope the team at Radical is able to take what they learned from the original game and improve upon the success of the franchise.

Take a peek below at the new teaser trailer showing some of the first action from Prototype 2, also plugging the exclusive first look coming to EGM in April. Stick to the Flickcast for more on Prototype 2 as it becomes available.

‘Battle: Los Angeles’ Kicks Up Its Viral Marketing

by Sebastian Suchecki, Feb 21 2011 // 12:30 PM

Many can debate that modern alien invasion films can’t hold a candle to classics like The Day The Earth Stood Still or War of the Worlds, but one thing that we have today that sets us apart is viral marketing. That’s exactly what’s starting up for the upcoming “military vs. alien” film Battle: Los Angeles.

Over the weekend, a 4 second long YouTube video was released, showing a brigade of alien spacecrafts hovering over the 110 freeway. If submitting a 4 second video to YouTube and getting upwards of 100,000 views in less than a week isn’t considered viral, then we don’t know what is.

For those who want to stay in touch with all things Battle: Los Angeles, they can report to the fictional site that allows citizens to report alien threats at reportthreats.com, like them on Facebook, and follow them on Twitter.

Check out the mysterious viral video after the jump. Battle: Los Angeles is set to hit theaters on March 11th.

Editorial: ‘Dead Space 2: Your Mom Hates This’ Ad Campaign

by John Carle, Jan 24 2011 // 3:00 PM

Take a bunch of women in their late forties to mid-fifties and show them graphic images of violence and mutilation from the upcoming Dead Space 2 (which comes out tomorrow, January 25th) and record their reactions ranging from utter terror to complete revulsion. Then make sure to tell people just how violent your game is over some not so violent in game videos. Slap a “M for Mature” tag on it and there you have your ad campaign with the tag line, “Your Mom Hates This.”

Give me a break. There are so many problems with this campaign that is insulting to the gaming community as well as general consumers. Let’s break this down in a logical manner, even though obviously the advertising agency didn’t.

Dead Space 2 is a rated M game, meaning it should only be targeting players over the age of 18. But, the message of “Your mom hates this” is something that marketers would gear towards a younger self righteous and rebellious person in their early teens. By the age of 18, most people have evolved in to at least somewhat freethinking individuals who make decisions based more on personal preference than just trying to do something to tick their mom off.

First Poster for ‘Thor’ Arrives

by Chris Ullrich, Dec 10 2010 // 7:00 AM

We’ve had some pics, some footage, a video game and now with the Marvel/Disney marketing machine ramping up even more, we’ve got the first poster for the upcoming Thor film to share with you today. The film is, as you probably know, being directed by Kenneth Branagh and features Chris Hemsworth as the God of Thunder.

With this new poster we get a good look at Hemsworth as Thor as well as something I’m sure fans are thrilled about: Thor’s mighty hammer Mjohnir. Gotta say I like the look of this poster and Hemsworth strikes an impressive pose as the title character. Kudos to the marketing department for this one. It’s simple yet gets the job done.

As the items have arrived giving us a better look at the film and what’s going to be in it we’ve become more excited about it. At first, I’ll admit, we were a bit skeptical but each successive bit of information has made the film look better and better.

Check out a larger version of the new poster after the break. Thor hits theaters on May 6th, 2011.

AMC Wants You To Spread The Dead For ‘The Walking Dead’

by Matt Raub, Oct 21 2010 // 11:00 AM

If there is one thing bringing both comic book and TV fans together, it’s the fact that Robert Kirkman’s critically acclaimed comic series The Walking Dead is coming to AMC, the home of Don Draper and Walter White. For the fans of TV, this is a chance for something groundbreaking and deep to fill that Mad Men void. For comic fans, it’s a chance to see their favorite panels taken to the screen. And for zombie fans, there is the promise of some kick ass kills week to week.

In an attempt to get more than those 3 centralized groups into the show, AMC is planning to incentiveize those loyal fans to spread the word (or in this case, the “dead”) all over the country in hopes to make the premiere the biggest night on television.

How does it work? Easy. Sign up at AMC’s Spread The Dead website with all the necessary info. Once registered, you’ll get a custom URL. For every click that URL gets from a different user, you get a certain amount of points.

Top two earners by the end of the contest on November 19th get $5,000 for first place and $2,500 for second. Don’t feel bad if you get close, because the top 15 still get some great Walking Dead prizes. So if you already have The Walking Dead premiere DVR’d, then it’s time to get your friends, family, pets, and strangers on the street to do the same. It could mean big money!

Catch The Walking Dead on AMC, October 131st at 10/9c and stay in touch will all things Walking Dead at their Twitter and Facebook pages. Good luck!

Marvel Celebrates ‘TRON: Legacy’ With Tron-Themed Variant Covers

by Matt Raub, Oct 19 2010 // 1:00 PM

Back in 1982, a movie called TRON about a programmer that is thrown into his own video game universe took the nerd world by storm. For decades, guys and girls alike were hot gluing LED ropes to black leggings so that they can look like their favorite science fiction hero. Now, those fans are getting the opportunity to live it all over again as TRON: Legacy hits theaters this December.

With that amount of fan hype involved, it’s almost understandable that a publishing company as big as Marvel would want to jump on into pimping the film with some awesome crosspromotion. Not to mention the fact that Disney and Marvel are one in the same now.

Starting next month, 10 different popular titles will get special TRON-ized variant covers by artists like Mark Brooks (Avengers: The Initiative) and Brandon Peterson (Uncanny X-Men).

The books you need to look for are as follows:

Amazing Spider-Man #651, Avengers #7, Avengers Academy #7, Captain America #612, Incredible Hulks #618, Invincible Iron Man #33, New Avengers #7, Secret Avengers #7, Thor #617, and Wolverine #4.

Before they even hit shelves next month, be sure to check out each of these variant covers after the jump, and get your TRON on December 17th!
