Conan O’Brien Goes Live With His First Talk Show Format in ‘Show Zero’

by Matt Raub, Nov 2 2010 // 7:00 AM

Though it may not feel like very long, Conan O’Brien has been off the air for quite some time now. Over at NBC, it’s like we’ve already forgotten that red-haired man that took over The Tonight Show for a brief stint while Leno had his experimental phase. On the web, however, CoCo has been thriving. For 8 weeks, O’Brien and his team have been putting out web videos via TeamCoco.com in which he addresses the fans, takes questions, and keep entertaining. Now, in the dawn of his brand new show on TBS, Conan brings us his first talk show-like format since he was taken off of NBC.

In Show Zero, Conan invites a group of real-life Conan fans to sit in his conference room as the audience as he puts on the fastest talk show in the history of the world. Need legitimacy? His first, and only guest is The Big Bang Theory’s Jim Parsons.

A great idea from Team Coco as they get ready for next Monday’s premiere of Conan on TBS. In the meantime, check out SHOW ZERO after the jump.

by Matt Raub, Aug 10 2010 // 10:00 AM

Who doesn’t love a great story about the business of show? Some of the biggest TV projects on the air today revolve around the glitz and glamor of Hollywood and show business such as Entourage and 30 Rock. Well, what if you bunched those two properties together and focused on the growing popularity of original web series and new media? Enter Famous [On The Internet].

From Xtian Bretz and Zach Grafton, the creators of the hilariously gritty take on Super Smash Brothers titled There Will Be Brawl, comes this new and exciting project about the lives of internet stars.

The show follows 5 characters in their journey to becoming web superstars in a brand new series. There’s Perk, the gamer, Leif, the musician, Calvin, the new media agent, Chloe, the web darling, and Chance, the main protagonist, who’s goal is to get his webshow Splatter High off the ground.

The series is directed by Bretz and Grafton, with Grafton penning the script and Jordan O’Leary as producer.

Twitter is Now Officially a Film Critic

by Bob Starr, Aug 4 2010 // 7:00 AM

Way back in October of 2009 I wrote an article entitled “Is Twitter the New Film Critic?“  I now know the answer to that question is “yes.” My theory was that with so many people talking about movies on Twitter it may be possible to assess the success or failure of a film based on film-goers opinions. Twitter commentary could feasibly act as a barometer for new releases and be the best movie critic to date.

I’m kicking myself for not acting on that idea because now someone beat me to the punch. TechCrunch brings word of a new site called fflick; a movie “review” site that taps into Twitter and determines how well films are trending on the social site by analyzing how often the film is mentioned:

“…you’ll find the Positive and Negative tweets, which display a list of tweets that the site has automatically categorized using its sentiment engine. After looking through a handful of movies, I found that the system was pretty good at identifying both negative and positive tweets, though there were occasionally some tweets that were only mentioning a film in passing or were mis-categorized.”

Having gone through some of the current film ratings myself on fflick I have to say the site reflected what I would consider to be the true sentiment regarding a particular film.  The way in which this process works is not unlike movie review site Rotten Tomatoes.

SDCC10 Extra: Interview with ‘The Legend of Neil’ Creator Sandeep Parikh

by John Carle, Aug 3 2010 // 8:00 AM

After what had been a long an exhausting weekend of Comic Con, we finally got the chance to speak with Sandeep Parikh, the creator of The Legend of Neil as well as Zaboo from The Guild. The previous night, Sandeep had shown a packed panel the first two episodes of the third season of the series. (The first can be found here).

In our interview, Sandeep reacts to how the premiere went. We also talk to him about The Legend of Neil being distributed through alternative media as opposed to broadcast television. Sandeep also gives his thoughts on the Legend of Neil always being viewed by him as a trilogy.

The Legend of Neil is in its final season on Atom.com. A new episode will be revealed every two weeks with some big cameos coming from members of the Guild, including Sandeep himself, and musical guest like Garfunkel and Oates.

Check out the interview after the jump. Be sure to check back right here often for more news on The Legend of Neil and other web series.

New ‘Battlestar Galactica’ Series On the Way

by Chris Ullrich, Jul 28 2010 // 2:00 PM

Yes, you read that headline correctly. Syfy is preparing a new Battlestar Galactica series, currently entitled Blood and Chrome, that will follow the exploits of William Adama during the Cylon War.

However, before you start to get too excited the series won’t actually be a full blown TV show airing on Syfy. Instead, it will be a web series with about 10 episodes, each around 9 minutes long. Not that I have anything against web series, in fact I kinda love them. I was just hoping for a new network show with a big budget and lots of awesome Cylon heads exploding and big space battles.

Oh well, here’s more on the show from Syfy:

According to Mark Stern, Syfy’s executive vice president of original programming and the co-head of original content for Universal Cable Productions, “Battlestar Galactica” and “Caprica” co-executive producer Michael Taylor will write the the script for the new venture.

“Blood & Chrome” is “about a young man’s initiation into war: both the realities of war as fought by soldiers on the ground (and in Battlestars and Vipers), and the somewhat less real version portrayed in the media,” according to Taylor.

“Blood & Chrome” would consist of nine or 10 episodes of nine or 10 minutes each, and it would make use of cutting-edge digital technology and special effects to depict the Cylon War. If it is greenlit to production, it will be filmed using green screens and virtual sets, not unlike Syfy’s “Sanctuary” or James Cameron’s “Avatar.” Before “Battlestar Galactica” ended, high-tech scans were made of all the show’s sets, so that the special-effects team will be able to re-create them (possibly even in 3D).

But wait, there’s more:

‘Legend of Neil’ Returns With An All New Episode

by Matt Raub, Jul 27 2010 // 3:00 PM

There are plenty of web shows out there that catch the eyes of every comic, movie, or gaming nerd. One that stands out above the rest is Sandeep Parikh and Atom Film‘s satire on the classic Zelda games, titled Legend of Neil. The show just started up it’s third and final season, and we’re already at the edge of our seats.

The last thing that Neil remembered, he was drunk playing a game of Zelda–but you knew all that. In season 2, Neill died in the game world, transporting him back to real life, where his brother stole his girlfriend, he was being evicted, and stuck in a crappy job as a gas attendant. As season 3 starts up, we watch as Neil decides to continue his adventures or quit.

Fans of the popular webseries The Guild will no doubt love this show, as Sandeep plays Zaboo on the show. That also means we get some great cameos from Felicia Day, Jeff Lewis, and maybe a few others.

Check out the season 3 premiere after the jump, and keep it here for more Legend of Neil news as we make our way through the final season.

SDCC10: ‘Celebrate the Web’ Event Wows Fans

by Chris Ullrich, Jul 25 2010 // 12:00 PM

Last night during San Diego Comic-Con a few hundred creators, fans and supporters gathered at the Bristol Hotel for the Celebrate the Web event to see and experience the latest and greatest content the world wide web has to offer. Those in attendance also got to be involved in panel discussions, moderated by our good pal Sam Proof, with some of the web’s top creators who offered their insight into making content today for the web, the tools of the trade and some of the pitfalls.

In the interest of full disclosure I need to say now that The Flickcast was a proud sponsor of the event along with our partners at Tube Filter and Blip.tv. However, that didn’t stop me from being very impressed with many of the sci-fi, dramatic and comedy programs who’s footage we saw last night.

Some of the creators at the event who showed footage or trailers from their projects included Shawna Trpcic from Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog, Melanie Merkosky from Continuum, Kelly Parks from Universal Dead, Christopher Preksta and Curt Wootton from The Mercury Men and The Bui Brothers from Pryce.

In addition, creators such as Paula Rhodes and Craig Frank from A Good Night’s Quest, Matt Sloan and Aaron Yonda from Chad Vader, Rudy Jahchan from A Comicbook Orange, Adam Chambers of I Heart Vampires and David Nett and Stephanie Thorpe of Gold: Night of the Zombie King were also in attendance.

Netflix Announces Deal with Relativity Media to Stream Major Motion Pictures

by Joe Gillis, Jul 6 2010 // 10:00 AM

In news that will most likely be met with meh by the major cable outlets, production company Relativity Media announced that it will make a deal with movie rental giant Netflix to stream its content via the service. While that may not sound impressive, the other part of this deal will see Relativity bypassing traditional home video routs and cable stations like HBO or Showtime and going directly to Neflix’s streaming movie service.

With the backing of backing larger companies like Lions Gate Entertainment, Sony Pictures, and Universal Studios, Relativity will grant Netflix first rights to stream popular movies that are typically sent to premium cable channels like Starz, HBO, and Showtime following the movie’s DVD release. This arrangement is seen as a major development because it’s the first time a major movie producer has turned to online distribution for its movies and not gone the traditional route.

Could this be the start of a trend? We’ll see. It would probably seem like more of a big deal (at least to me) if the movies were a bit more impressive and if HBO and Showtime didn’t seem more concerned with creating original programming than showing movies. Still, it is an interesting development to be sure. Time will tell if it has an impact on other companies and if they join in.

The deal is set to launch with movies Skyline and The Fighter, featuring Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale, with more titles to follow soon.

‘The Legend of Neil’ Season 3 Gets A Trailer

by Matt Raub, Jun 29 2010 // 10:00 AM

With so much on the Internets these days, there are plenty of web series that get lost in the fray. Whether due to poor writing, bad directing, sub-par acting or whatever, many just don’t catch on. Some, however, do manage to catch the public eye. One of those few that do is The Legend of Neil.

The online sitcom comes from Sandeep Parikh, who fans of the genre may remember as “Zaboo” from the insanely popular web series The Guild. Fans of Guild will be happy to know that Felicia Day has a recurring role on the show as well, and this series even had a musical episode last season.

What is Legend of Neil? Well, if a drunk in his late 20′s got sucked into a game of Legend of Zelda and realizes exactly how ridiculous the entire concept is, that pretty much describes the show. There’s plenty of humor for video game fans, or even just fans of swearing.

Check out the all new teaser trailer for season 3, which premieres on July 24th just in time for Comic-Con, after the jump.

Awesome ‘Batman’ Fan Film: ‘City of Scars’

by Chris Ullrich, Jun 19 2010 // 1:00 PM

Often around the Internets you find many different kinds of videos. Some are produced by people who obviously have no business using  a camera to do anything except filming their vacations.

Then, you find those rare gems produced by people who obviously have talent and know what to do with it. Often these filmmakers don’t have a lot of money but what they lack in funds they more than make up for in sheer creativity.

Case in point is the awesome new Batman fan film City of Scars. Produced by the team of Aaron and Sean Schoenke through their Bat in the Sun productions this film shows, once again, what talented people can do with a little money and a lot of imagination and creativity. It is well worth the time it will take you to watch it and the time it will take to sit through the commercial beforehand.

Check out this awesome fan made movie after the break.
