If you’ve been a fan of Joss Whedon and his various creations such as Firefly, Angel, Dollhouse and Buffy: The Vampire Slayer, you’re most likely aware that several of these creations have lived on in comic book form after their untimely demise on television. One of the ost popular of these comic book continuations is Buffy: Season Eight, Exec. Produced and occasionally written by Whedon and published by Dark Horse Comics.
With Season Eight scheduled to conclude its run with issue 40, fans are growing concerned that this could be the end of Buffy in comic form. Well don’t worry because Whedon has got you covered. In a recent interview, the creator assured fans of Buffy comics everywhere that he will, indeed, be doing a Season Nine. Although, it might not run quite as long as Season Eight.
“I have had for a long time a conception for Season Nine that is very different from Season Eight,” said Whedon. “It may not run as long, because 40 issues sounds great until you realize that it’s four or five years.” Feel better? Good.
Buffy Season Eight is is comic book stores now.

We’ve been following some of NBC’s new Fall shows pretty closely here at The Flickcast. One of the ones that seems pretty interesting is a hostpital show called Mercy. What makes this one more interesting than the crop of other medical shows out there? Good question. Read on.
Mercy has a couple interesting things going for it. First, its told from the perspective of nurses. And not just any nurses, but a trio of brash, confident and compassionate babes including Iraq war vet Veronica, played by Taylor Schilling, and newcomer Chloe, played by the delightful Michelle Trachtenberg of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Plus, the show is created and exec. produced by Liz Heldens of Friday Night Lights and Gretchen Berg & Aaron Harberts of Pushing Daises, two other quality shows.
Does all this mean Mercy will be a sure-fire hit? Not necessarily. But with all these elemets in place, it sure has a good chance. Mercy premieres on Wednesday, September 23rd at 8/7C. Until then, be sure to check out this latest promo after the jump.

The Caprica casting office seems to be working overtime lately and is snagging a bunch of great new people to take on key roles in the show. Previously, we told you about Battlestar Galactica alumni Luciana Carro joining the show as well as comedian Patton Oswalt recently being cast. And now, word comes today that everyone’s other favorite former vampire James Marsters is joining the show as well and taking on what is described as a “sizable role.”
No word yet on exactly what Marsters will be doing on the show and who, or what, he will be doing it to but we do know, according to EW, that he will be pretty much doing what he does best and playing a dangerous and unpredictable bad guy driven by his carnal and moralistic desires. Marsters will play a terrorist leader named Barnabus Greele in at least three episodes of the upcoming Syfy series.
As a fan of Buffy and all of Marsters’ work, I’m always glad to see him make an appearance on any show. He always brings something special to the table and raises the level of any show he’s on. The fact that he’s going to be in Caprica makes me even more excited for its debut on Januray 22, 2010. Not that I really needed a reason to watch the show.

For yesterday’s The Pull List, go here.
Absolution #1 – Avatar – $3.99
Score: 8.0
Back in early July, we had the chance to talk to Christos Gage about his creator owned property, Absolution, from Avatar Press. The interview can be read here. This week, Absolution came to stores and delivered what people were hoping for from the title. Absolution takes a different approach to the superhero genre. Unlike Garth Ennis’ edgy work on The Boys which has superheroes as corrupt drug addicted sexual perverts, Gage reinvents the wheel as he poses the question about what could cause a hero to snap.
Unlike the “heroes” of The Boys, Gage’s hero John Dusk is actually a good person. He uses his powers to save the lives of innocents and defeat bad guys. There is no corporate backing or monetary gain for John by doing it. He is the equivalent of a super powered beat cop. And like some cops who have been on Special Victims Units or the homicide for too long, Absolution explores what it takes to break a man.
The issue begins with John Dusk, the spandex wearing hero seen on the cover of the issue, as he fights White Power, a superpowered white supremacist. John’s powers can be compared to a toned down version of the Green Lantern or the Invisible Woman as he controls his aura around him that allows him to make crude objects with it that can be used both offensively and defensively. When things take a turn for the worst in the fight, John must use lethal force to stop his assailant. Even knowing the criminal is a rapist and murder, John still tries to keep him from dying until he sees two of White Powers captives, causing him to make a decision he can never step back from.

One of the great things about the Internets is you often find lots of creative people with time on their hands. Some of them even have talent. In those cases, we are often lucky enough to get some great videos put together and then shared with the online world at large. This is one of those cases.
In this very clever video by RebelliousPixels, Edward Cullen from the Twilight Series meets Buffy from Buffy the Vampire Slayer at Sunnydale High. According to the folks that made this video: “It’s an example of transformative storytelling serving as a visual critique of Edward’s character and generally creepy behavior. Seen through Buffy’s eyes some of the more patriarchal gender roles and sexist Hollywood tropes embedded in the Twilight saga are exposed in hilarious ways.”
Sounds good to me. Let’s get to it. Check out the video after the jump.

As you probably know, we were quite disturbed by the fact that the original producers of Buffy the Vampire Slayer were going ahead with a new movie and were not going to involve Joss Whedon. In fact, we couldn’t imagine it going forward at all without the man who basically invented the character and made the TV series what it was. But apparently, that man can imagine it going forward without him because Whedon was recently asked to participate, according to an interview over at EW Online, and pretty much gave the producers, Fran Rubel Kazui and Kaz Kazui, the finger.
Said Whedon: “I believe [the producers] did ultimately reach out to my agent after the news broke. I think that’s something better left untouched by me. So, I wish them luck.”
Well, there you have it. No Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie with Joss Whedon. With that done and rumors flying around about Megan Fox taking on the Buffy role in the new film, you have to wonder if fans are going to embrace this new film or not. Or, if its going to even get made at all given the negative buzz already surrounding it.
My guess is it may not. It looks like a tough, uphill battle now for the Kazui’s, especially if you take into account results of a poll over at EW Online stating that only three percent of their readers would see the film if Whedon wasn’t attached. Ouch, that’s gotta hurt. I guess the producers underestimated the power of the Whedonverse. Big mistake.

First, we brought you news of a new Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie in the works with original producer and director Kaz Kazui and Fran Rubel Kazui but without the participation of Joss Whedon. Now comes word, and keep in mind this info sits deep in the heart of rumor country, that Megan Fox is being considered for the role of Buffy in the new film.
Don’t misunderstand, we like Megan Fox here at The Flickcast. In fact, we may have mentioned her once or twice during a podcast or on the site. Still, with her recent opinions concerning her role as Wonder Woman, another strong female warrior, we’re not sure if she would even be interested in playing Buffy — a role made famous by Sarah Michelle Gellar.
That said, the possibility is an interesting one. Obviously, she has many of the physical attibutes necessary for the role, but we’ve never seen her do much fighting or martial arts. However, those things can be tought — at least well enough to make them look plausable on screen. So, the question really comes down to, as it often does, her acting ability. As in, can she convincingly pull off the role? Maybe.
But until we know for sure if this is something more than just a rumor, there’s really no point in speculating further. We’ll be keeping a close eye on this one as it develops.

Despite the epic amount of press behind it (sarcasm), my local comic shop did not order any of Dark Horse’s miniseries Werewolves on the Moon versus Vampires. Just the name alone filled me with shock and terror as to what might be on the comic page should I one day be able to find this issue somewhere. As soon as I do get my hands on it though, you better believe it will make its way into a future back issue edition of The Pull List.
Until then, here’s this week’s The Pull List.
Pull of the Week:
Dark Avengers #5 – Marvel – $3.99
Score: 9.0
The first book to receive a second “Pull of the Week” accolade, Dark Avengers #5 focuses on just how cool it is to be a bad guy. Told through flashbacks taking place hours before a news interview, this issue does its best to introduce pieces of personality to almost all the members of the Osborn backed Avengers team. At the same time, Norman Osborn publicly responds to Clint Barton calling him out publicly as the former murder, the Green Goblin.
The final pages of the issue reveal that all might not be going as planned for the members of the Cabal as Norman must assemble his team of Avengers again for the next issue. Sadly, as it seems with many books that Bendis writes, if he doesn’t care about a character they don’t get much representation in his book. Daken, though seen gets a very limited role in the issue much like Mockingbird has since her return in the pages of the New Avengers.

Last week on The Flickcast, Chris, Matt and Christina discussed, debated, dissed and did time with topics such as the exciting new Fox TV schedule, the renewal of some their favorite shows like Dollhouse, Fringe and Chuck and how many of these shows will have reduced budgets and casting conflicts next season. The team also talked cool casting news from the worlds of Thor, Red Dawn, the A-Team and a whole lot more!
This week, its a whole new show and the team is back in action. This time around, your intrepid threesome take on topics like a Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie without Joss Whedon, the reboot of Flight of the Navigator, the merits of the Land of the Lost, Terminator: Rise of the Machines, Fame and the fact that Hollywood seems to have run completely out of original ideas.
Plus, Chris, Matt and Christina make some cool picks for you to watch and enjoy. This week Chris picks a movie written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects) called The Way of the Gun
, Matt picks a tv show called The Venture Bros.
and Christina adds Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law
to her list of picks. Be sure to check them all out.

File this in the “WTF?” file but it looks like, at least according to the Hollywood Reporter, that there’s going to be a brand new Buffy the Vampire Slayer feature film. Good news, right? Well, let me get to the “WTF?” part so you know what I’m talking about. This new film will reportedly not involve Joss Whedon. . . at all. Yes, you read that right. The man behind Buffy who wrote the original feature film and guided the tv series to seven successful seasons will not be involved with the new film.
Instead, we’ll get original film director Fran Rubel Kazui, who’s last film was actually the original Buffy and who has not directed anything sense — at least nothing I’m aware of. Sounds like a great idea, right? At least the new film seems to have a couple of producers with something on the ball, having produced some decent and even good films over the years including The Ring, The Departed and, um, well that’s about it for the good ones.
The Producers and Kazui, who’s actually owned the rights to Buffy since discovering the then-unknown Joss Whedon’s script many years ago, are not calling this a sequel. Instead, they refer to it as a remake or relaunch. Of course they do. I bet they thought Kristy Swanson was a good idea too.
At the moment, the film is only in the “talking” stages with no studio involved, cast or script. But rest assured, we’ll be following this one very closely as things develop.

Here at The Flickcast we really like all-things Joss Whedon. Of course, that obsession began with his first, and still the best, television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Sadly, the show went off the air in 2003. Fortunately, its managed to live on in comic book form and got its season eight courtesy of the fine folks at Dark Horse Comics.
Now, over at Comics Continuum, they’ve got a preview of a brand new Buffy comic called Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Tales of the Vampires to further entertain and delight fans of the Slayer.
According to the press release from Dark Horse, Tales of the Vampires is about:
“A small town in Massachusetts, where a young man named Jacob goes about his day as usual — wakes early, eats breakfast with his mom, and heads to school. He’s a hard worker and a reliable friend to Alexia, an athletic and headstrong young woman. But at night Jacob likes to cut loose at the local arcade, where he’s befriended a reckless gang of vampires who enjoy drinking his blood. Jacob craves the high and the easy escape from the monotony of his life that this ‘bloodletting’ provides. Enter the mysterious and sultry May, who can help Jacob leave those high-school days behind — that is, if Alexia doesn’t stop her first.”
Sounds good to us. Check out the big page previews after the jump. But if you do, please be beware of potential SPOILERS. Enjoy.
