Tom Selleck’s ‘Indiana Jones’ Audition, NBC’s ‘Wonder Woman’ Teaser, & WiiU’s ‘Killer Freaks from Outer Space’ are all On The Radar

by The Flickcast, Jun 10 2011 // 1:15 PM

Welcome to another edition of On the Radar where we delve into all corners of the entertainment, tech and geek Internets for news, views and whatnot that may have escaped our regular coverage during the week. Let is know if we missed something interesting.

Let’s get started!

• We finally get the first sounds of Hugo Weaving as the Red Skull in a new teaser for Captain America: The First Avenger. Funny…he sounds a lot like Megatron.

• It looks like the lawsuit against Warner Bros for use of Mike Tyson’s tattoo on Ed Helms in The Hangover Part II may force them to CG the tattoo out of the DVD’s. This seems like a completely reasonable use of that $400 million the film made in the box office.

• Dark animated film 9 director Shane Acker is planning on a big-screen adaptation of Thomas The Tank Engine. Our hope is that Tim Burton also produces this film and Thomas is now a train…from hell!

• Ever want to know what Raiders of the Lost Ark would be like with Tom Selleck and Sean Young? Here you go, but we warn you: the mustache did not help him in the audition.

• Before we ever get the inevitable leaked pilot, we’ve got a whopping 7 second teaser from the failed NBC Wonder Woman series. Who knew you could sum up the entire reason why it failed in 7 seconds?

• In hoping to leave the kids table and join the big boys, Nintendo has teamed with Ubisoft to work on a new raunchy game for the WiiU, titled Killer Freaks from Outer Space. We’re totally sold.

Captain America Getting a Costume Makeover for ‘The Avengers’

by Sebastian Suchecki, Apr 29 2011 // 9:00 AM

We’re still months away from getting to experience Chris Evans dodging bullets and throwing his mighty shield in Captain America: The First Avenger, but we shouldn’t get too tied to that suit, as it may be the last time we see it.

According to a recent interview Evans did with MTV Splash Page, his patriotic Captain America costume from the film will be getting a complete makeover for him to do battle alongside Iron Man, Thor and Hulk in 2012′s The Avengers.

“[It's a] new costume,” Evans told MTV News of Captain America’s visual change-up in the 2012 blockbuster. “Yeah, it’s awesome. It’s really cool.”

“I was worried because I started to get really attached to the old one,” he said. “I really started digging it. It’s not that easy to move in, but I started really liking it. The first time we tried a new one on, I was like, ‘Oh, I miss the old one.’”

“I was just in Albuquerque a couple days ago [shooting Avengers] and we did a camera test with the new suit,” he said. “It’s pretty rad.”

We probably won’t get to see much of this new outfit until after the July 22nd release of The First Avenger, but we’ll be waiting eagerly!

SPOILER! Watch the Post-Credit Easter Egg from ‘Thor’

by Matt Raub, Apr 22 2011 // 1:15 PM

UPDATE: Due to a request from Paramount, we have taken down the video. Sorry folks but they don’t want you to see it.

—

We may be a few weeks away from the God of Thunder’s release  with Thor here in the US, but folks overseas are basking in the glory of Marvel’s newest film as we speak. One diehard fan in particular even got some footage of the illustrious post-credit sequence that Marvel loves to slap onto the end of their films.

We give HEAVY WARNING here: if you don’t want to see what happens in this sequence, then we suggest not clicking through, as it gives clues that lead us up to Marvel’s upcoming films Captain America: The First Avenger and The Avengers.

Those who are a fan of Marvel lore know that this isn’t much of a spoiler, per se, as it is some of the greatest story elements told in comics shown in live action.

So, without further adieu, click through the jump to see the special “Easter Egg” from after the credits in Marvel Studios’ Thor. We loved it, but let us know what you think in the comments below!

Go Behind The Scenes at SEGA’s ‘Thor: God of Thunder’

by John Carle, Apr 19 2011 // 8:30 AM

Only a few weeks away, Thor: God of Thunder crashes down upon store shelves on May 3rd. But before the release of the game that coincides with, but doesn’t depend upon, the Thor movie, SEGA has released a special behind the scenes video for the game. SEGA has been doing everything they can to show the quality of this title before its release to help get the horrid aftertaste of Iron Man 2 out of gamers’ memories.

In this behind the scenes trailer, producers give some insight in to how the game’s combat will be structured. The main crux of Thor: God of Thunder’s action will rely upon his hammer as a melee weapon with the god powers acting as support. The thunder powers seeming will affect enemy statuses with stun effects, wind powers will help control groups of enemies and lighting will act as a damage dealing source. These powers also look to combine with Thor’s famous hammer Mjohnir as can be seen in some of the special attacks in the video.

The grapple system is also an interesting aspect to the game as it seems like a smaller scale version of Shadow of the Colossus. Players don’t just fight these enemies that tower over them. They must actually climb their way up to deal a fatal blow against their opponents. These gigantic fights help players feel like they are a part of the Thor world as these epic encounters are part of what makes Thor different from other “street level” heroes. While Spider-Man or Captain America may occasionally be forced to take on a gigantic monster or robot attacking their city, it is commonplace for Thor. It allows players to feel the power of the god they control on screen.

The only real red flag that comes up from the BTS video is the graphics of the Wii version. While the look of the PlayStation 3 and XBox 360 versions are not exactly mindblowing, the Wii continues to look farther and farther back in time in terms of visual quality as more time passes. As a result, the Wii version of Thor: God of Thunder isn’t a very pretty game at all.

Take a peek after the jump of Thor: God of Thunder and stick to the Flickcast for more news as it becomes available.

Which New Avenger Will We See in ‘Thor’?

by Matt Raub, Mar 30 2011 // 10:00 AM

We’re about a month away from the biggest comic book movie season ever, which means it’s time for some juicy news bits to float on by. There’s some great stuff about the upcoming Green Lantern film, which has already come out.

With two more of the four Avengers prequels (which already include Iron Man 2 and Incredible Hulk) hitting theaters this summer, questions about crossover are bound to come up. The Howard Stark cameo was already slightly spoiled in last week’s Captain America: The First Avenger trailer, but who will be the big reveal in Kenneth Branagh’s Thor?

Well, it looks like Cinema Blend has broke the spoilerific (take the hint! walk away now if you don’t want this ruined.) news that we will, in fact, be getting a Jeremy Renner cameo as Hawkeye in the upcoming flick. Cinema Blend’s got the report.

The scene we saw featured Renner as Hawkeye, working with the infamous Agent Coulson, played as he was in the Iron Man movies, by Clark Gregg. The scene features Hawkeye using his famous bow and arrow and he has multiple lines, so while we’re talking about something a little more than a momentary cameo, there’s no way to know if his involvement will go any further than that one scene.

SEGA Reveals New Screens for ‘Thor: God of Thunder’ and ‘Captain America: Super Soldier’

by John Carle, Mar 24 2011 // 10:00 AM

This summer, Marvel films will be releasing two blockbusters with Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger on the way to their ultimate team movie, The Avengers. And with summer blockbusters comes the inevitable movie tie in games.

Comic book movie based video games have had mixed success in the past. Some titles like Spider-Man 2 were considered awesome games. Some like Wolverine: Origins received arguably more praise than the film they were based off of. Some, specifically Iron Man 2, were considered abysmal failures.

SEGA looks to fall in to the former of these categories with the rights to both of Marvel’s summer titles with Thor: God of Thunder and Captain America: Super Soldier. Recently, we reported rumors that both Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans will reprise their respective roles from the feature films as voice actors in the video games. This is very good news for anyone who saw the live demo of Captain America: Super Soldier at New York Comic Con and heard the placeholder voice behind Cap.

Now SEGA has released a pack of screen shots of both titles. In each batch, there are screens from XBox 360 and the PlayStation 3 before a drastic drop off in graphic quality when the Nintendo Wii screens start popping up. And of course, the old school looking graphics appear on the Nintendo DS. Both the XBox 360 and PlayStation versions of the games will be playable in stereoscopic 3D.

Make sure to check them all out after the jump and check back right here for more news on Thor: God of Thunder and Captain America: Super Soldier as they both quickly approach launch.

Chris Evans To Play Captain America In Upcoming Video Game

by Matt Raub, Feb 18 2011 // 8:30 AM

We’ve already seen him don the giant “A” and wield the shield in the trailer for the upcoming film. But now, Chris Evans is getting to stretch his acting chops into the world of video games as he voices his character in the upcoming release from SEGA: Captain America: Super Soldier.

No other voice talent has been announced for the game but with Evans leading the charge, you can expect SEGA to probably pull in his fellow cast members too. From the press release we know the game takes place around the time of World War II, in tandem with the film’s plot. Here’s the official synopsis:

In Captain America: Super Soldier, players become Captain America as he faces the Red Skull and his Hydra army in an epic third-person action adventure set in the darkest days of World War II. Wielding Captain America’s legendary shield, gamers will engage in free-flowing combat and acrobatic platforming to infiltrate a mysterious castle overtaken by Hydra forces, where they’ll battle a host of nefarious enemies serving the Red Skull, including the infamous Iron Cross, Baron Strucker and Madame Hydra. Players must defeat the evil scientist Arnim Zola and his wartime experiments, combining powerful melee combos and shield attacks to devastating effect.

The game is set for release later this year, closer to the time Captain America: First Avenger hits theaters. It will be available for all major gaming consoles.

This Was Inevitable: First of Many New ‘Avengers’ Fan Trailers Hits The Web

by Matt Raub, Feb 16 2011 // 1:30 PM

In a world where supercuts and fan trailers rule the internet, it’s only expected that franchise as well-loved as the upcoming Avengers film is going to get its turn in the “fan-made trailer” merry-go-round.

Sure, this isn’t the first Avengers fan trailer ever made. As a matter of fact, there have been hundreds before this one, but now that the world has official footage of every Marvel film (not different films re-dubbed to look like Captain America or Thor), we get something as close to a real trailer as we are going to get…for a while.

YouTube contributor Yoko Higuchi put this new one together, with footage from films like Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2 and the trailers of Captain America: The First Avenger, Thor and the Comic-Con Avengers teaser.

You can take a look at the fan trailer after the jump, and for those Marvel fans who are bigger X-Men nerds than Avengers, Yoko also put together a trailer for X-Men: First Class.

The Avengers (the real one) is set to hit theaters on May 4th, 2012.

First Look at Bucky from ‘Captain America’

by Erik Jensen, Feb 9 2011 // 7:30 AM

By now, fans of Captain America have seen the official Super Bowl trailer of the upcoming comic-based flick and even caught a glimpse of the official movie poster, but one thing I’ve been curious about is how the movie would portray  the hero’s loyal side-kick, ‘Bucky.’ In a recent interview with director Joe Johnston over at the L.A. Times, it turns out that James “Bucky” Barnes, played by actor Sebastian Stan  (“Gossip Girl,” “Kings”), will have a decidedly darker personality than fans of the comic may be used to.

In the interview, Johnston comments on how Bucky’s personality will receive a Hollywood update:

“Sebastian brought something really interesting and slightly on the dark side and really compelling to watch — when he’s on camera, you’re fascinated by watching him. You know, he was originally up for the lead, for the Steve Rogers role, but he didn’t have quite the same earnest, I-want-to-fight-for-my-country aura that Chris has for this role. Sebastian has a little bit of the bad boy, he’s a little bit of the James Dean type and that goes somewhat counter to the general perception of Steve Rogers. He wasn’t quite right for Captain America,  but I think he’s perfect for Bucky because, really, he can have a little bit of that dark side.”

Certainly an interesting development and somewhat understandable as the boy-wonder-esque sidekick character is unlikely to be received so readily by an audience in 2011. And it certainly seems that the writing team on ‘Captain America,’ including Christopher Markus, Stephen McFeely and Joss Whedon, didn’t merely go part-way when putting their own spin on the duo’s partnership. Instead, they practically reinvented it.

First Trailer For ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’

by Matt Raub, Feb 7 2011 // 7:30 AM

While it may be the ultimate night of TV for sports fans everywhere, the Super Bowl is also the biggest time of the year for great commercials and movie trailers. Some of the biggest upcoming films of the year get seen first during this night, and last night brought us some doozies.

Up first, of course, is the very first footage and trailer for Captain America: The First Avengers. In this 30 second spot, we get some great moments to look forward to, such as Cap (Chris Evans) in full costume, a glimpse at the Red Skull (Hugo Weaving), some Stanley Tucci, and some great action shots.

The film is set to release on July 22nd and also stars Hayley Atwell, Tommy Lee Jones, and Sebastian Stan as Bucky.

Check out the trailer after the jump. Now that we’ve seen the trailer, what do we think? Sound off in the comments.

First Poster for ‘Captain America’ Arrives

by Chris Ullrich, Feb 4 2011 // 2:54 PM

It’s starting to look a lot like Avengers around here as the first poster for Captain America has now arrived. In it we get a good look at Cap himself (as played by Chris Evans) as well as some clues to what we can expect from the film.

Obviously, at least from the poster, we can expect Cap to engage in some battles that result in him getting quite dirty. In addition, it seems he’s out to avenge something or someone in the movie. Perhaps that’s why he’s called the “First Avenger”? I bet that’s a good guess.

Still, Evans looks pretty cool in the poster and from the overall look I feel safe to say that the film, and the character, are in good hands with Joe Johnston. Check out the full poster after the jump. Look for Captain America: The First Avenger in theaters on July 22nd. That date can’t get here fast enough.

Ok, what do you guys think of the poster? Does it work for you or not? Sound off in the comments.

First Official Look at Chris Evans as Captain America

by Chris Ullrich, Oct 28 2010 // 11:00 AM

Let the speculation and artist renderings end as we now have the first “official” look at Chris Evens in costume as Captain America in the upcoming film. The pic, which graces the cover of the upcoming issue of Entertainment Weekly, shows Evans in costume, mask off and shield at the ready.

Based on this pic it seems his costume design is quite close to the early concept sketches that leaked online earlier this summer. But its not only the cover of the magazine we’re interested in as Evans also spoke about accepting the role in the film and admitted his reluctance about taking it on.

“At the time, I remember telling a buddy of mine, ‘If the movie bombs, I’m f—ed. If the movie hits, I’m f—ed,’” said Evans, who admitted that his reluctance was based entirely on fear. “I realized my whole decision making process was fear based, and you never want to make a decision out of fear.”

“I was just scared,” he added. “I can’t believe I was almost too chicken to play Captain America.”

Director Joe Johnston, however, had no such reservations about Evans as he described the character as “. . .  an everyman who in the course of a few minutes become a perfect human specimen. That has to create some interesting personal issues.” Good point Mr. Johnston.

Now that we’ve seen Evans as Captain America, what do we think? Also, take a look at a slightly bigger version of the photo after the jump.
