Thanks to Eastbound for coming up with the most disturbing opening imaginable: Stevie having sex. He’s been on Kenny’s trail and hired a prostitute (one, presumably, among many) to, ha ha, pump her for information.
Kenny’s back to pitching fastballs with his new Mexican team (the Charros). He’s contacted by a mysterious man (whom Kenny believes to be the only rich man in Mexico, as well as the only Asian), and the two discuss buying a Mexican team. I’m guessing that since not much is made of this for the rest of the episode, it’s a setup for some of the subsequent episodes.
Anyway, Kenny returns home to find (in one of the funniest, darkest moments of the show) Stevie. I’m not going to describe all that occurs, but the sheer awkwardness, morbidity, then jarring tenderness of the sequence once again demonstrates why Eastbound & Down is one of the finest shows on television.
Stevie moves in with Kenny, who takes the opportunity to rob him blind and go through his grotesque cell phone photo album (warning: Newcomers to the show may find some of the pictures traumatizing). Stevie also fills Kenny in about the situation back home (“Your brother says I can’t come by and play with the boys when he’s not there anymore”), dealing the blow that after Kenny left, April got back together with Cutler, and the two are now married.
Though shaken, Kenny takes Stevie out for a night on the town (“This is me every night: staring at buttholes and gettin’ my buzz on”). Stevie gets beyond drunk, which was Kenny’s plan, and the next morning Stevie awakes in the back of dingy bandito-esque truck, bond for the States (or at least away from Kenny).
Kenny Powers is back mofos and he’s ready for action. That’s right, Season Dos of Eastbound and Down is ready and this time around Kenny and company will be heading down to Mexico for what promises to be more foul mouthed fun.
To get you excited for the new season, we’ve got the first full trailer for it to share with you today. In it, you see that not that much has changed and that Kenny still remains a crude, yet lovable, slob with delusions of grandeur.
In case you’re not familiar with the show, it features Danny McBride as Kenny Powers, a has-been professional baseball player who is constantly getting himself in trouble. The first season ended with Kenny leaving his girlfriend at a gas station as he goes off to Mexico to play baseball. The second season is sure to be filled with even more hijinks and crass stunts perpetrated by Kenny.
Check out the trailer for Eastbound and Down Season Dos after the jump. It returns to HBO on September 26 at 10:30/9:30C.
That’s right, Season “Dos.” Kenny and company will be heading down to Mexico for this round of Baseball, a rather inspired move for the crass comedy.
Why not take a foul-mouthed, cocky ballplayer who doesn’t understand (or care) about being politically and racially sensitive and send him down to play a little ball in Mexico?
What could possibly go wrong? You know that Kenny will wreak havoc and squander good will wherever he may go. He’ll have the locals chasing after him with pitchforks in no time.
Eastbound and Down stars Danny McBride as a has-been professional baseball player who is constantly getting himself in trouble. It is rude, crude, and absolutely hilarious. If you have not caught the first season yet, season one is available on DVD and Netflix.
Eastbound and Down will return to HBO on September 26 at 10:30pm. Check out the poster and two brand new clips after the jump.
Who would have thought that two of the best movies of the summer would be animated family fare? First we had Pixar’s wonderful Toy Story 3, and now we are treated to Despicable Me, the debut film by production company Illumination Entertainment.
By the looks of this fledgling feature, we have a lot to look forward to with this company. Despicable Me is simply adorable, that truly is the best word to describe it. Gru (voiced by Steve Carell), is a villian who has fallen to the lower ranks of the bad-guy pecking order in recent years. He longs to rise to the top once again.
An enthusiastic new schemer named Vector (Jason Segel) has stolen the villain spotlight because he successfully swiped a Pyramid landmark in Egypt. While media outlets frantically report that there is a new villain in their midst, Gru seethes, and hatches a plan. He will obtain a top secret machine that can shrink objects, travel to the moon, shrink it to a manageable size, and steal it. Surely this will be the most dastardly deed ever!
Gru assembles his army of minions (those adorable yellow creatures you’ve seen in the trailers) to help him erect a spaceship and steal the device. Vector thwarts Gru once again by stealing the shrinking device from him after he successfully acquires it.
With True Blood kicking off this Sunday, HBO is getting their new and returning series ready for the world to see. That means that we get some of the first glimpses at our favorite comedies returning since last season, such as Bored to Death and Eastbound and Down.
The former, Bored To Death, stars Jason Schwartzman as a failed writer living in Brooklyn who decides to moonlight as a private detective. The only problem is that he isn’t very good at that either. The show is actually made watchable by the supporting characters played by Zach Galifiniakis and Ted Danson.
The latter, starring Danny McBride, is about a rundown, foul-mouthed, ex-major league pitcher who has to settle into the life of a regular gym teacher in a small town. The show comes from Jody Hill (Observe & Report) and Will Ferrell, and had us in stitches for the first season.
Both comedies are slated to return around the same time, keeping HBO’s popular comedy series together in one night, most likely. Check out the new teasers for both shows after the jump, and get ready for Eastbound & Down and Bored To Death to return this September.
For just about all of 2008, Danny McBride ended up being the most ubiquitous screen comedian out there based on his cameos in Fanboys, Drillbit Taylor, Pineapple Express, Tropic Thunder and more. Things got a little more quiet in 2009, as he had a starring role in Land of the Lost and the original HBO series Eastbound and Down. Now it looks like things may be picking back up for the foul-mouthed actor.
According to Pajiba.com, the story of his latest comedy is basically set up to be “What if Kenny Powers was in Wedding Crashers?”:
The project is The Chadster, which at one time had The Hangover’s Todd Phillips attached to both produce and direct. Phillips has fallen off as director, but he’s still producing the comedy, which is moving ahead with Eastbound co-writer Shawn Harwell as scribe.
The studio wedding comedy, set up at Warner Brothers and produced by Phillips’ Green Hat Films, is about a best man who has his position threatened when an eccentric, long-lost childhood friend shows up at the wedding and causes trouble.
With this news coming in, a second season of Eastbound & Down on the way, McBride starring in an adaptation of the comic book Hench, and the actor popping up in another 5 films over the next year, it seems 2010 will be a repeat of 2008 for Danny McBride.
A few months ago we were treated to a mysterious teaser for a new film titled Despicable Me, which had a cornucopia of comedic names attached to it like Steve Carell, Jason Segel, Will Arnett, Kristin Wiig, Russel Brand, and Danny McBride. We’re finally getting a bit more of the puzzle solved as the second trailer for the film has hit the web.
The film focuses on Gru (Carell), the world’s #2 super villain, who is constantly at the throat of #1, his competition and enemy, Vector (Segel). The film takes a few interesting turns, which force Gru to rethink his evil ways.
The film comes from the studio and animation department that brought us Ice Age, Robots, and Horton Hears a Who! and the writing team who brough us Bubble Boy and The Santa Clause 2. Check out the second teaser after the jump, which focuses on the rivalry between Gru and Vector.
Between voicing the lead in Wes Anderson’s The Fantastic Mr. Fox, and playing a “jedi warrior” in The Men Who Stare At Goats, George Clooney has been back on the rise as of late. Now we get to see him in a bit more dramatic light now that the first trailer for Up in the Air has hit the ‘net.
Directed by Juno’s Jason Reitman, Up in the Air is about the life of a corporate downsizing expert who’s life on the road becomes more interesting when he comes across the woman of his dreams. The film is based on the novel by Walter Kim, who also wrote the novel-turned-film Thumbsucker back in 2005.
Like Thumbsucker, this film brings in a laundry list of cameos, from Zach Galifianakis to J.K. Simmons to Jason Bateman to Danny McBride. The cast list looks to be a regular “who’s who” of independent comedies. Check out the first trailer after the break. Up in the Air hits theaters December 4th.
Welcome to Episode 10 of The Flickcast. We’re very happy to have reached this milestone and thank you, the readers and listeners, for making it happen. We appreciate you. Okay, enough pats on the back, let’s get on with the show.
Previously on The Flickcast, Chris, Matt and Christina discussed various topics including a Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie without Joss Whedon, the reboot of Flight of the Navigator, and the merits of Terminator: Rise of the Machines.
This week the team is back once again and ready for action. In this episode, they discuss a broad range of topics including the Twilight phenomenon, the MTV Movie Awards, the success of Pixar’s Up, the merits of Drag Me to Hell, some cool Deadpool and E3 news, Danny McBride’s new movie project, the Megan Fox as Wonder Woman “controversy”, who we think should star in a Wonder Woman movie and that Matt, for some reason, doesn’t seem to like Jessica Biel or Hallle Berry.
Plus, there’s some new picks this week including Matt’s favorite new horror movie, Drag Me to Hell, one of Christina’s favorite movies, Closer, and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Chris’ favorite video game where you get to kill terrorists, drive fast, shoot machine guns from an airplane and blow stuff up.

Sometimes, in the case of movies like Batman Begins, X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Star Trek, you can understand why it was necessary to make them and/or reboot the franchises. But then there’s those movies that make you wonder why, or how, they ever got made. In this case I’m talking about the big screen adaptation of TV’s Land of The Lost featuring Wil Farrell, Danny McBride and Anna Friel.
I’m a fan of the original show and I’m not sure why this time around the filmmakers thought it would be a good idea to make it a comedy. The film would have been better served if it had been done more seriously as it was in the original series. It could still have humor (which is a big thing for me and comes up in my review of Star Trek earlier today) and it could still have action, suspense and cool looking Sleestaks.
Love it or hate it, this movie is coming out later this year . Until then, over at Rope of Silicon they have some new photos from the film as well as a new trailer curtesy of Universal Pictures. Whatever your opinion, these new pics and trailer do peak my curiousity and actually make me somewhat interested to see the movie. I know, I’m as surprised as you are. Watch the trailer below and check out more photos after the jump.
