Fantastic Fest Interview: ‘Primal’ Cast and Crew Talk Teeth, Tribes and Beastly Sex

by Shannon Hood, Oct 19 2010 // 9:00 AM

Primal made its North American debut at Fantastic Fest, and was one of four movies featured by IFC Midnight.  The film is available on IFC On Demand until December 22.

In the film six friends are on a trip exploring ancient cave paintings.  Mel (Krew Boylan) decides to take a skinny dip, and becomes “infected” with an ancient entity.  Bad things ensue as the pals quickly realize it is kill (Mel) or be killed.  Primal is a genre bending movie that always has its tongue firmly planted in cheek.

We got to sit down with director Josh Reed and stars Krew Boylan and Wil Traval during the festival for an exclusive interview.

The Flickcast: Josh, you directed the movie, did you write it as well?

Josh Reed: I wrote it from a story that Nigel (one of the producers) and I wrote.

TF: How did you guys come up with the concept?  Did you draw on anything for inspiration?  To me, there were some obvious nods to Cabin Fever, did you guys see that movie?

Krew Boylan: I haven’t seen that.

JR: I hadn’t seen it before, but I have seen it. I’ve seen and really like Cabin Fever, but we’d actually written the initial story, but I hadn’t written the script before I saw Cabin Fever.

TF: So did you have any Australian movies that served as influences?

JR: No, not really.

TF: Well, you have the whole “the water is infected” plot device.

JR: I mean, there were definitely a lot of films that influenced that film, but that specific idea of the water hole becoming infected was more a result of wanting to get that young group of people out camping, and just having fun and messing around and stuff.

Then you have an aspect of things going pear-shaped on a specific one of them, and I guess it gave us a device that we could use later to reinfect another one. It was more that it worked as a really good device for the story. It wasn’t based on any legend or anything in Australia.

Interview: Artist James Silvani Talks Drawing ‘Darkwing Duck’ & ‘The Muppets’

by John Carle, Sep 14 2010 // 10:00 AM

Originally a cartoon, Darkwing Duck ran from 1991 to 1995 and again from 1996 to 1997. A darker, cooler version of the Duck Tales universe, Darkwing gave Disney its very own super hero character who wasn’t a total boy scout like Gizmo Duck.

Recently, Boom launched the Darkwing Duck miniseries which was quickly indefinitely extended to an ongoing series. Take a peek below at our interview with James Silvani, the current artist on the book, as he discusses with us his work on the project, the character, and the tremendous fan support the title has received.

The Flickcast: Recently Boom has been having a lot of success with their licensed products, especially with the Disney series. How did you get approached about working on the Darkwing Duck series?

James Silvani: Actually, I started off doing The Muppets and was working on a few Muppet ideas and the editors had asked, “Hey do you mind throwing in a Darkwing Duck cover? It’s something of a pet project of ours”. Once we had the approval, we went ahead with it and it became a nice little fluke.

Exclusive: ‘Sons of Anarchy’ Creator Kurt Sutter Talks Season 3, Crossover With ‘The Shield’

by Matt Raub, Aug 30 2010 // 11:00 AM

All this week, we’ll be bringing you some great interviews with the cast and creator of FX’s hit series, Sons of Anarchy, as we lead up to the epic season 3 premiere. Kicking it off, we got a chance to speak with the man who started it all, creator and executive producer Kurt Sutter.

Starting off as writer and producer for another FX favorite in The Shield, Sutter got such a taste for gritty crime dramas that he decided to do it himself. Not without taking a few of his own characters over with him.

Sutter spilled the beans on who exactly those crossover characters were, as well as what we can expect to see from some of the upcoming episodes from season 3.

Check out the full interview after the jump, and be sure to catch the season 3 premiere of Sons of Anarchy next Tuesday, September 7th, only on FX.

Exclusive Interview: WWE’s World Champion Kane Talks About His Upcoming Summerslam Match

by John Carle, Aug 12 2010 // 11:00 AM

Comic-Con doesn’t just mean comics as we are sure you have noticed. It means TV, movies and toys as well. Someone very familiar with this is the WWE. World Wrestling Entertainment has relaunched their action figure line under Mattel over the past year and as a result had a huge presence at SDCC.

And it wasn’t just toys that were being shown off. Unlike He-Man, the characters in the WWE action figure line are real people and they came to show themselves off at San Diego.

One of the most dominant men in the WWE over the past decade has been Kane. The Big Red Monster holds records in the WWE’s Royal Rumble match, garners multiple WrestleMania showcase matches under his belt and has been a multi-time champion with an impressive 16 title reigns, including a staggering 9 reigns in the tag team division and a WWE Championship.

Most recently, Kane won SmackDown’s Money in the Bank Ladder match at the Money in the Bank Pay-Per-View. In doing so, he was able to cash in his Money in the Bank title match and defeat Rey Mysterio later that night to start his first reign as World Heavyweight Champion.

Interview: WWE’s Bella Twins On Their Dream Match, More

by John Carle, Aug 9 2010 // 10:00 AM

At Comic-Con, we got the chance to catch up with the Bella Twins, WWE’s first and only pair ever of twin Divas. We had the pleasure of talking to Brie back in April about her and Nikki’s experience with Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and their first WrestleMania.

This time, we got not one but both of the lovely ladies to sit down and talk to us at the Con. Having lived in San Diego for some time, this was the twins’ first time attending Comic-Con so we made sure to get their thoughts on all the things they had seen. We also talked about what the twins see for themselves moving forward as the special celebrity guests have ceased on Monday Night Raw as they had been officially the assistants each week for these guests.

Brie (on the left) and Nikki (on the right) give us some insight on their dream matches moving forward as well as intentions on the Diva’s Championship. The girls discuss with us wrestling inspirations and even let us know where they’d like to see themselves at the upcoming WrestleMania.

Make sure to watch the full interview after the jump.

Exclusive Interview: WWE Superstar John Morrison Gives The Scoop on SummerSlam

by John Carle, Aug 5 2010 // 11:00 AM

At The Flickcast, we have a special appreciation for anyone who has been able to harness the power of the Internet and use it as a tool to make their way into the spotlight. One such example of this in the world of wrestling is John Morrison. After a stint on ECW, John Morrison was relegated to mid-card matches on SmackDown until he was paired up with the Miz and won the WWE Tag Team titles.

There, the two came up with the Dirt Sheet, a weekly internet short on WWE.com which quickly skyrocketed the pair’s popularity. After that, Morrison and Miz have both been on the top of the card for both TV and Pay-Per-View.

At Comic-Con, we got the chance to sit down with John Morrison who is currently preparing for his upcoming SummerSlam match against the Nexus. He won’t be alone though as he is joining John Cena, R-Truth, Chris Jericho, Edge, The Great Khali and the legendary Bret “The Hitman” Hart in the ring.

John talks about his Muscle and Fitness cover and his workout ethic. John also gives us an in-depth analysis of his mindset and that of the rest of “Team Morrison” for his upcoming SummerSlam match. He discusses his new action figure and we even ask John about the future of a possible Dirt Sheet reunion.

Check out the full interview below and check back often for more upcoming interviews with some fan favorites at WWE.

SDCC10: Zach Levi & Joshua Gomez Talk ‘Chuck’ Season 4

by Matt Raub, Jul 25 2010 // 9:00 AM

Last year, we got the chance to catch up with one of the two funniest guys at Comic-Con, as Zach Levi and Joshua Gomez were in attendance prepping for the third season of Chuck. Due to an overwhelming response from the fans, and the huge support from Subway, the show was greanted another season, and is coming back again this Fall.

We got the chance to catch up once again with the cast, and most importantly, Chuck Bartowski himself, Zach Levi, at this year’s Con. Both he and his on-screen BFF, Josh Gomez, were pretty excited as we discussed the addition of Terminator’s Linda Hamilton to the cast as Chuck and Ellie’s mother.

Check out our interview with Zach after the jump, and be sure to keep it here for more news straight from Comic-Con 2010, and even some exclusive interviews with the rest of the cast of Chuck.

SDCC10: Interview with TNA’s Mr. Anderson

by John Carle, Jul 23 2010 // 4:15 PM

During preview night at San Diego Comic Con, the Flickcast got a few minutes to catch up with TNA wrestler Mr. Anderson. After being suddenly released from his WWE contract, the former Mr. Kennedy began a series of viral videos that would eventually lead to a contract with his new employers, Total Nonstop Action.

Anderson, an avid video game fan, was making his second trip down to SDCC to see all the new games being shown for the first time on the show floor before heading off this weekend for a house show tour with TNA.

Check out the video after the jump where Ken talks about the differences working in TNA compared to his time with WWE. Ken also talks about how his career has gone since joining TNA as well as having his first television program with former Olympic Gold Medalist Kurt Angle.

You can follow Ken on his Twitter account to keep abreast of the rest of his adventures at Comic Con.

‘Covert Affairs’ Debriefing, Part 1: Christopher Gorham

by Bob Starr, Jul 6 2010 // 8:00 AM

During The Flickcast’s set visit to USA Network’s new series Covert Affairs we spoke with Exec. Producer Doug Liman about the origins of the show.  Following that we had the opportunity to speak with three of the show’s regulars, Christopher Gorham (Ugly Betty, Harper’s Island), Anne Dudek (House, Mad Men) and Piper Perabo (The Prestige, Coyote Ugly).  All the interviews took place on the Covert Affairs sets in Toronto, Canada.

Christopher Gorham plays Auggie Anderson on Covert Affairs.  The resident technology expert, the role lends itself to being the bridge between the audience and how the tech on the show works.  Based on this, one would think Gorham was a natural geek, but according to him that’s not the case:

The Flickcast: Being surrounded by that, being that kind of character on the show, how well versed are you in technology?  Like, are you anywhere near what Auggie is, or are you-

Chris Gorham: Nowhere-first of all, nowhere near.

TF: No?

CG: Second of all, nowhere near what I wish I knew.  Thirdly, nowhere near where I need to be, because my kids are getting older quick.

One would think getting your head around hi-tech gadgets would be a challenge but that pales in comparison to one important element of Gorham’s character-the fact that he’s blind.  In preparation for the role Gorham worked extensively with the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB):

“I was working on a film in Michigan right before the pilot, and literally came straight here from there. So I hadn’t had any time at home to really do the research that I would normally do. So I called ahead and found the – well, I found the CNIB on the Internet, and called ahead to the production office and asked them if they could hook me up with somebody over there.

And they did – a lovely woman named Leslie McDonald who came out. And we had two sessions during the pilot, where the first one she came out and just went over things like sighted lead, and working with the cane, and a lot of just behavioural things about how to get around.”

Having seen a number of actors take on roles in which they portray blind characters I can tell you Gorham is exceptional.  Be that as it may, Gorham is quick to emphasise that while Auggie is blind that does not diminish him in contrast to other characters:

Exclusive Interview: Director Breck Eisner on ‘The Crazies’, ‘Flash Gordon’, ‘Escape From New York’ and More

by Shannon Hood, Jun 28 2010 // 10:00 AM

In anticipation of the DVD release of The Crazies , I got to speak with director Breck Eisner about that movie and some upcoming projects he has planned. While I was doing my research on Eisner, I saw that he directed an episode of Fear Itself, an anthology that played on NBC in the summer of 2008.  As luck would have it, I just happened to have seen the episode Eisner directed (“The Sacrifice”) , so we began by talking about it.

THE FLICKCAST:  I was looking at your IMDB, and I saw that you did an episode of Fear Itself, and it just happened to be one I saw.

BRECK EISNER: Oh really, you’re one of the few. Fear Itself, I think it was miscast putting it on NBC in the summer.

FC: I know, I really pull for anything horror related on TV, and none of it makes it.

BE: No, it just doesn’t, unfortunately.

FC: Well, there are definitely horror fans out there, but I think that they just don’t bother with television.

BE: Certainly not network television.

FC: You previously directed Sahara. How do you get from Sahara to this movie? They are so radically different. Can you tell us a little bit about how you got drawn to The Crazies?

BE: Sahara was my first movie, and it is a very long story about how I came to be directing it. The short version of the story is that I initially was involved with optioning the material with a producer many years before with no intention of making it, it was a much bigger movie than I could make.

Exclusive: Interview With Marvel Fan-Favorite Artist Dan Panosian

by Diane Panosian, Jun 17 2010 // 12:00 PM

In place of my usual witty wordage, I’ve done an interview on Marvel, DC, Image, and Boom! (among others) comic book artist Dan Panosian in beautiful, living color. His artwork encompasses Captain America, The Flash, Spider-Man, X-Men, Prophet, Wolverine, Green Lantern, Irredeemable, and a couple issues of the fondly remembered Marvel Swimsuit Special, so you can be sure there was a lot to talk about.

His current book, X-Factor Forever is on shelves now. If the interview just wasn’t enough for you, check out his website at DanPanosian.com and his bountiful blog, the Urban Barbarian. If you’re in the LA area, you can see him and a smattering of other artists boozin’ and sketchin’ during a clandestine meeting of the infamous Drink N’ Draw Social Club held every Thursday night at Casey’s in Downtown LA.

But for now, press play on the video after the jump and be profoundly amused by his words of wisdom.

Exclusive: Logan Huffman Spills The Beans On ‘V’

by Matt Raub, Apr 20 2010 // 9:00 AM

We’ve been bringing you lots of coverage of ABC’s popular ongoing reboot of the series V as of late. Scott Wolf, Laura Vandervoort, and Joel Gretsch have all spoken with us about the show, and in continuing that trend, we recently got the chance to sit down with Logan Huffman, who plays “Tyler” on the show.

Logan doesn’t come from a big acting background or know somebody in the industry. He was picked to play the role on V because he was perfect for it, and he couldn’t be more humble about it. We were able to ask Logan lots of questions about things to come on the series, and he was more than happy to let us in on a few secrets.

The Flickcast: With things up in arms both planet-side and on the ship, what can you tell me about tonight’s episode of V?

Logan Huffman: Well, everything is building up on the world stage, when it comes to Anna and the Fifth column. Things are moving along with my character and Lisa (Laura Vandervoort). I don’t know what I can tell you, but it’s going to get pretty fun and intense in the weeks to come.
