The Flickcast Presents: The Bitcast Best of Gaming 2012 – Part 2

The Bitcast Best of 2012 - Part 2

Thanks for coming back for Part 2 of The Flickcast Presents The Bitcast Best of Gaming 2012. Click here to see yesterday’s part 1 and keep coming back the rest of the week for more awards including the Game of the Year being awarded on Friday.

Most Awkward Romance – Halo 4

So thankfully we got a year off from the awkward bromance of Gears of War between Dom and Marcus as well as a lack of fistbumping from Salem and Rios in Army of Two. What we did have was a love story between a stoic soldier and the lunatic AI woman living in his head. (I know, when I put it that way it makes it sound like I have no soul.)

In Halo 4, players were able to see a true evolution in the character of Master Chief, John 117, as he began showing actual human emotions due to his connection to the AI chip that had been living in his suit with him for the better part of a decade. Like most women that a guy has lived with for that long (while he spent most of his time asleep), Cortana has started to go a little crazy.

Game Review: ‘LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes’ for PlayStation 3

by John Carle, Jul 2 2012 // 11:30 AM

The name itself is somewhat deceptive. LEGO Batman combined with the DC Super Heroes. Is it another entrant into the LEGO Batman franchise or the start of a new series focusing on more of the greater DC universe? And with trailers featuring members of the Justice League, why didn’t they go with LEGO Justice League or at least LEGO Batman 2: Justice League? LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes gives a lot of what is expected as well as some interesting gameplay and story design choices as well.

Gameplay:

At its core, LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes is a puzzle solving game with light combat elements. Players must figure out how to traverse from point A to point B in a room using the special techniques and powers of the game’s heroes. Both Batman and Robin have multiple suits, each with different power sets, to aid in this and are aided by Superman’s unique abilities later on. Superman can’t walk through electric fields, but Batman has a suit that can. Robin can’t melt gold beams but Superman can shoot his heat vision to accomplish the task. And for some reason, Robin has both a hazard suit to clean up toxic waste and a snow suit which lets him freeze stuff.

Interspersed between puzzles is light combat. Enemies can often be taken out in a single hit and multiple targets can go down quickly with a quick shot from the batarang. Combat is also one of the fundamentals that hurts the gameplay. During the levels where players can be both Superman and Batman or in a later level where players can be Wonder Woman, both characters are essentially invincible. There is no threat as they have steel health hearts and cannot take damage. And because both can fly as well, there is no fear of them falling during platforming sections. The second players realize this, the excitement of the combat sections is lost.

Talking Mini Figures Debut in ‘LEGO Batman 2’

by John Carle, Jun 13 2012 // 8:00 AM

When we revealed the LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes “Open World” trailer, we also heard the first glimpse of the newly voiced LEGO Batman and Superman. Now, with their latest trailer, Traveler’s Tales lets us take a peek at more of the LEGO DC Super Hero family in action with voices for the first time.

In the video after the jump, Batman, Superman, the Joker and the Riddler are all finally seen in their full LEGO glory. Instead of being restricted to physical humor, an additional layer of depth is added to the LEGO games franchises by allowing characters to be voiced for the first time. Batman does a try hard gritty imitation of Christian Bale from the recent Nolan trilogy.

Superman seems like more of an airhead than ever. And the combination of the two has the makings of comedy gold. Just from the two interactions between the two stars from the trailer, there are already so many more potential character building set ups now available to the duo. Add in voice to the rest of the cast and this could very well be the best LEGO game yet.

Take a look at the full LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes trailer below and stick to the Flickcast for more as LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes hits all major gaming platforms next week on June 19th.

New ‘LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes’ Open World Trailer and Screen Shots

by John Carle, May 24 2012 // 1:45 PM

Since their inception, the LEGO licensed games have followed a pretty standard formula. Players start off in a central hub where they can select missions to enter, check their progress and buy more characters to play as. After years of this between Star Wars, Batman, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter, the franchise was due for a change.

Not only is LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes the first LEGO game to feature voice acting for the characters, but it will be an open world format. How this will impact gameplay will be interesting as this has never been attempted by any of the LEGO franchise games before. It may be a structure similar to a GTA game where players meet up with NPCs and receive missions or maybe even an Arkham City style where Batman receives updates from Alfred or Oracle, which would make sense using both the Batman franchise as well as the new voiceover being added to the game.

Take a peek below at the trailer and screen shots for LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes to see Batman, Superman, the Flash, the rest of the Justice League and all the villains in action. You even get a brief glimpse of the friendly antagonism between Batman and Superman as well. LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes is coming to all major consoles and handhelds on June 19th.

First Trailer Revealed for ‘LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes’

by John Carle, Mar 16 2012 // 9:00 AM

After breaking the 10 million sold mark, it was inevitable that LEGO Batman would receive a sequel. The original was so popular, it became a part of the package deal for the XBox 360 for a time. Back in November of 2011, a few months after LEGO revealed initial designs for their LEGO DC Super Heroes line, Traveller’s Tales and Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment announced that the latest LEGO Batman title would encompass some of the most well known heroes and villains of the DC Universe. Now more than a full three months later, we get a first glimpse of it in action in LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes.

In the trailer below, we see LEGO Batman and his ward LEGO Robin once again, but this time joined by the Man of Steel (or in this case also LEGO) Superman. He makes his way over to Gotham as the Joker is released from Arkham Asylum by Supe’s own nemesis, Lex Luthor (voiced by none other than Clancy Brown).
