As discussed on the most recent episode of The Flickcast, there’s been quite a bit of Terminator: Salvation footage dropping over the last few weeks. Sure, its great to see it and it all makes the movie look pretty good.
But as talked about during the show, it also sorta seems a bit desperate on the part of the studio to try and make sure everyone knows the movie’s good and not a piece of crap. Still, we’re fans of the franchise around here so the more Terminator the better as far as we’re concerned.
On that note, be sure to check out this latest clip from the film which appeared today over at AOL’s Moviefone site. If the video doesn’t play here (they do that sometimes), be sure to click on the link at go directly to AOL’s site.
According to our friends over at ComicMix, the official word is in that Fox has picked up the DC comics series Human Target as one of its new Fall television series. The pilot, based on the comic created by Len Wein, Carmine Infantino and Dick Giordano, was apparently the most popular one shown at Fox’s recent network screenings.
In case you’re not familiar with Human Target, it concerns bodyguard Christopher Chance, played by Mark Valley in the new show, who has a rather unique way of helping his clients: he assumes their identities and becomes the “human target” to protect them. Others in the cast include Jackie Earle Haley, recently of Watchmen and the upcoming Nightmare on Elm Street and Chi McBride from Pushing Daisies and House.
The pilot was written by Jon Steinberg and directed by Simon West of Con-Air and Lara Croft fame. Steinberg and West exec. produced the pilot along with McG, director of the upcoming Terminator: Salvation. Also according to ComicMix, this latest show continues a long streak of Len Wein’s comics work being adapted for the screen. Some of his others include Swamp Thing, Wolverine, Storm, Colossus and Lucius Fox.
Apparently, even Even Human Target has been adapted before for TV before in a 1992 series on ABC starring Rick Springfield — which only lasted seven episodes. Let’s hope this new show does a little better.
Not many know that Terminator: Salvation hitting theaters in less than a month isn’t just another tale in the legend of John Connor, but hopefully the starting point of a whole new cinematic trilogy. The director of the film[s] (and regular persona-non-grata in the fan community), McG recently sounded off in an interview with Film Journal on his thoughts for a sequel, which will count as the fifth film in the Terminator franchise, and probably the most confusing: (Possible Spoilers)
I strongly suspect the next movie is going to take place in a [pre-Judgment Day] 2011. John Connor is going to travel back in time and he’s going to have to galvanize the militaries of the world for an impending Skynet invasion. They’ve figured out time travel to the degree where they can send more than [just] one naked entity. So you’re going to have hunter killers and transports and harvesters and everything arriving in our time and Connor fighting back with conventional military warfare, which I think is going to be fucking awesome. I also think he’s going to meet a scientist that’s going to look a lot like present-day Robert Patrick [who famously played the T-1000 in Terminator 2], talking about stem-cell research and how we can all live as idealized, younger versions of ourselves.
While this is great news for anybody who was a fan of Robert Patrick in T2, this doesn’t sound like very good news for fans of the franchise, or even coherent time-travel stories. This throws out the Terminator rule that “only living flesh can be sent back in time”, which is why we got gratuitous Arnold butt-shots back in the 80s. If one were to break down McG’s statement, there are plenty more holes in our Terminator universe. So does this mean he’s just messing with our heads in an attempt to be hip? And where is Summer Glau??
Even with the state of California’s economy, and all of its other recent issues, there’s still time for the Govenor to joke around and hint about his appearance in the upcoming Terminator: Salvation film. Recently, the Govenator gave a webcast interview and Yahoo news is reporting that during the interview, he all but confirmed his appearance in the fourth Terminator film.
However, his appearance may not be exactly what fans expect or are hoping for. According to the site:
The governor made it clear he had no time to shoot new footage but that the filmmakers are playing with technology to insert his image from the earlier “Terminator” movies. Schwarzenegger says he told director McG he will come to the premiere of the movie.
So, we will probably see our favorite Terminator in the new film but it will end up being either previously shot footage or, as I predicted during the most recent episode of The Flickcast, a poster or some other identifying photo of Schwarzenegger’s character somewhere in the ruins of Los Angeles. Who knows, maybe in the new film the Govenator’s likeness is the model Skynet uses when they decide to create the Terminator in the first place? Did that just blow your mind or what?
Terminator: Salvation stars Christian Bale, Moon Bloodgood and Bryce Dallas Howard, is directed by McG and hits theaters on May 21st.
