Review: ‘Youth in Revolt’

by Shannon Hood, Jan 8 2010 // 12:00 PM

Picture 2

Let’s face the facts: if you’ve already jumped off the Michael Cera bandwagon, this movie will probably not prompt you to jump back on. However, if you’re still straddling the fence, you might be pleased to see that his character in Youth in Revolt is a natural progression for Cera. It is not a full disengagement from the characteristics that made him so endearing to begin with, but it adds a welcome new layer.

Youth in Revolt is based on the first book in a series by C.D. Payne, published in 1993. Touted as a relatable new voice for teenagers, the book’s protagonist Nick Twisp became a popular “Holden Caulfield” type for their generation.

Nick is an old soul in a teenager’s body, preferring French cinema and the crooning of Frank Sinatra to typical high school shenanigans. Consequently, he has few friends, and in lieu of any actual relationships with girls, he studies a well-worn sex manual, bracing himself for the fateful day when sex might become a reality.

As is typical of most teenage comedies, the adults in Nick’s life are a bunch of buffoons. His trashy but well meaning mother (Jean Smart) has a loser boyfriend, Jerry (Zach Galifianakis), who lives with them. She spends her days in bathrobes and negligees, sporting a different fake hairpiece every day, while Jerry wears a “three-wolf moon t-shirt” without a trace of irony, making them a trailer park couple of dazzling mediocrity.

New ‘Red Band’ Trailer for ‘Youth In Revolt’

by Joe Gillis, Dec 9 2009 // 10:00 AM

youth-in-revolt-3In case you haven’t noticed, we’ve been bringing you a bunch of information about the upcoming film Youth In Revolt, featuring Michael Cera in a dual role. Now, we’ve got another piece of the puzzle to share with you today, in the form of a brand new ‘Red Band’ trailer for the film.

This trailer first appeared over at Funny or Die where things like this tend to appear sometimes. In the new trailer, we get more info about the story as well as get more “flavor” of the film, including the use of more “colorful” language and perhaps even some sexually suggestive scenes.

Yes, this movie is going to be rated “R” so brace yourself for some adult-oriented hijinks. Check out the trailer after the jump. And remember, by clicking through you certify that you are over eighteen years of age.

Latest Trailer for ‘Youth In Revolt’

by Chris Ullrich, Dec 4 2009 // 2:15 PM

michael-cera-youth_in_revoltYouth In Revolt is one of those movies that hasn’t really found much of a place on my radar yet. Sure, I know about it and have seen the previous articles we’ve had here which talk about it, but I’m still not entirely sure what to make of it. Or, if I’m particularly excited about the movie or not.

If you’re in the same boat, perhaps this latest trailer for the film will help you (and me) get off the fence and decide if the movie seems worthy of our attention or not. In this new trailer, we get more of an idea about the story of the film and get a better look at some of the quirkiness that will be Michael Cera’s performance of not one, but two different characters in the film.

We also get more of a look at some of the film’s other characters and actors, which include Ray Liotta, Fred Willard, Justin Long and the great Zach Galifianakis. Check out the new trailer after the break. Perhaps after viewing it you’l be able to get excited for the film’s release on January 8, 2010.

Official Posters for ‘The Road’ and ‘Youth In Revolt’ Released

by Chris Ullrich, Oct 22 2009 // 8:00 AM

TheRoad_1Sheet[2]We got quite a bit of different stuff sent to us here at The Flickcast. Some of it is pretty cool like trailers for upcoming movies, game videos, comics previews and things of that nature. We also get a lot of movie poster art sent to us and some of it is also pretty cool. Case in point are the two new “official’ posters for The Road and Youth in Revolt.

Both poster feature what so many do these days, large pictures of the principal actors and a clever or meaningful tag line. Also, both are different than previous posters that have been released for these films. In addition, on the poster for The Road, Mortensen is clearly holding a gun so you don’t think this is just a movie about people talking and, curiously, the names of the writer and director appear again in larger print at the bottom of the poster so they are clearly visible. This is, of course, an obvious attempt to make sure that people know who they are — particularly those who nominated and vote on the Oscars.

The Youth in Revolt Poster, at least to me, reminds me of the poster for Stanley Kubrick’s film Lolita, which I’ve included after the jump for comparison. I’m not sure what the marketing department at Dimension/Weinstein was trying to go for, but obviously some of them are Kubrick fans.

We’ve talked about these two films here before and you can expect a review of each of these films closer to their release dates. Until then, be sure to check out the larger versions of both posters after the jump. The Road opens on November 25th and Youth In Revolt opens on January 8th, 2010.

‘Arrested Development’ Feature Script In the Works

by Cortney Zamm, Oct 5 2009 // 2:15 PM

Arrested-Development-Poster-arrested-development-671766_375_500It’s been three long, sad years since the Emmy-winning Fox TV show Arrested Development was canceled, and after months of rumor and speculation it looks like the Bluth family will be making it to the big screen after all. The Hollywood Reporter just reported that show creator Mitchell Hurwitz and show co-executive producer James Vallely are working on a script for the hugely anticipated big screen adaptation of the show. Imagine and Fox Searchlight will produce the film.

Debuting in 2003, Arrested Development focused in on the Bluths, a crazy family whose business goes sour and are left with nothing but each other. According to Hurwitz, the biggest holdup of the script being penned was getting the entire cast, including Jason Bateman, Michael Cera, David Cross, Will Arnett, Alia Shawkat, Portia de Rossi and Jeffrey Tambor, committed to the film.

Scheduling conflicts are certain, as cast members Cera, Arnett, and Bateman have had incredibly successful careers since the show ended. In the meantime, Hurwitz and Vallely are working together on a new animated show on Fox titled Sit Down, Shut Up, also starring Will Arnett and Jason Bateman.

First Trailer for ‘Youth in Revolt’

by Joe Gillis, Aug 24 2009 // 2:00 PM

youthinrevoltMichael Cera has lately been getting a bad rap. He has seemingly fallen from grace and lately gone the way of Bill Heder and playing the same role over and over. Since his jump to stardom with Arrested Development and Superbad, Cera has gotten the role of the nervous lead nearly half a dozen times.

However, all may not be lost as it looks like things may just be changing for him — at least judging by the first trailer for his latest film Youth in Revolt which has just hit the Internets. Cera initially plays the same character many have grown tired of, until that character decides that he needs to manifest a separate identity. When that happens, he follows no rules, and only knows the path of the sexy villain — which could be a nice change for the actor if he can pull it off.

The film also stars Ray Liotta, Zach Galifianakis, Fred Willard, and Justin Long. Check out the trailer after the jump.

Youth in Revolt hits theaters October 30th.

‘Scott Pilgrim’ Game Coming Next Year

by Joe Gillis, Aug 6 2009 // 3:30 PM

scott-pilgrimWho would’ve thought that a game starring Michael Cera, Kieren Culkin, and Jason Schwartzman would get optioned as a video game by UbiSoft, the developer who’s titles include Assassin’s Creed and Call of Juarez? Apparently Universal did, as they’re already planning a game to coincide with Scott Pilgrim vs. The World‘s theatrical release in 2010.

Universal’s live action film is based on a series of graphic novels by Bryan Lee O’Malley, and has won several awards including a Harvey Award, Wizard’s Indie Book of the Year, and Entertainment Weekly’s Independent Comic of the Year. In the film, Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) has just met the girl of his dreams (Live Free or Die Hard’s Mary Elizabeth Winstead) only to find out that her seven evil ex boyfriends are coming to kill him.

According to the Bill Kispert, Vice President, Interactive, Universal Partnership and Licensing, they are all excited for the film and gameL

“We were hooked on Scott Pilgrim from our first read of the comics and script. The storyline mirrors the escalating structure of a video game, and it is filled with clever homage to video game culture. We are thrilled to be collaborating with Ubisoft to bring fans a thoroughly entertaining interactive experience.”
