‘Green Lantern: Emerald Knights’ Trailer Arrives

by Joe Gillis, Mar 2 2011 // 10:30 AM

DC Entertainment and Warner Home Video have been on a roll as of late. Their latest release, in the form of adapting Grant Morrison’s All-Star Superman was a massive success, and had great voice work done by names like Christina Hendricks and Anthony LaPaglia. Now, the animation studio is shifting focus onto this year’s big star, Green Lantern, with an animated anthology about Hal Jordan and the whole Green Lantern Corps. Warner Home Video has the full synopsis.

Green Lantern: Emerald Knights is an all-new DC Universe Animated Original Movie that weaves six interlocking stories of the Green Lantern Corps’ rich mythology around preparations for an attack by an ancient enemy.

As the battle approaches, Hal Jordan (voiced by Nathan Fillion, Castle) mentors new recruit Arisia (Elisabeth Moss, Mad Men) in the history of the Green Lantern Corps, telling tales of Avra (the first Green Lantern) and several of Hal’s comrades – including Abin Sur, Kilowog, Laira and Mogo.

In the end, Arisia must rise to the occasion to help Hal, Sinestro and the entire Green Lantern Corps save the universe from the destructive forces of Krona.

So for the first time since the epic fan film done over a year ago, fans can finally combine Nathan Fillion with the Green Lantern in their minds again, and this time it will be legitimate.

Fans can catch Emerald Knights on Blu-Ray and DVD June 7th as the promotion ramps up for this summer’s highest anticipated films, Green Lantern, in theaters on June 17th.

‘Firefly’ Coming Back to TV on Basic Cable, But Don’t Get Too Excited

by Joe Gillis, Feb 18 2011 // 4:30 PM

Yes fans, the show that most believe was canceled way too early is coming back to TV once again. That show is, of course, Joss Whedon’s Firefly. Sadly, it won’t be for brand new episodes or anything like that.

Instead, the Science Channel will air the series in its entirety, plus some new and pretty cool extras. The channel will wrap each episode of the show with interstitial segments starring renowned physicist Dr. Michio Kaku (who you might remember form the days of Leo Laporte’s Screen Savers show on Tech TV), who will discuss the science behind the show’s sci-fi concepts.

According to 20th Century Fox, the studio that originally produced the show and also killed it early, this will be the first time Firefly has aired on basic cable channel since 2008, when it ran on USA Network. Firefly premieres on Science Channel on March 6 at 8 p.m., with the two hour pilot, followed by the first episode at 10 p.m.

Following that, Firefly episodes will air every Sunday. Don’t worry, they will be their original intended order and upgraded to high definition. At least they got that part right.

Nathan Fillion Voices Hal Jordan In ‘Green Lantern: Emerald Knights’

by Erik Jensen, Feb 9 2011 // 9:00 AM

Despite staying busy as the star of ABC’s Castle, we’re learning that Nathan Fillion will also be starring as Hal Jordan in an animated tie-in to this summer’s live-action DC Comic adaptation, Green Lantern. Set to release June 7, 2011 from Warner Bros Animation, the animated flick will star some amazing voice talent including Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men), Jason Isaacs (‘Harry Potter’), Kelly Hu (Hawaii Five-0, The Vampire Diaries), rocker/actor/spoken-word artist Henry Rollins and last-but-not-least, ex-wrestler “Rowdy” Roddy Piper.

TV Guide is serving up an exclusive first-look of Fillion (pictured above) as he takes to the microphone in his unmistakable ‘Green Lantern’ tee-shirt. Fillion spoke briefly with TV Guide about his fanboy glee over being chosen to voice an iconic comic character like The Green Lantern:

“I was always reading the comic books, I was always a spectator,”Fillion told TV Guide. “Now I feel like I own a little piece of Green Lantern.“

Warner Bros Animation is planning to release ‘Green Lantern: Emerald Knights’ a mere 10 days before the release of the feature film starring Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan. With Fillion and Reynolds both alumni of ABC’s ‘Two Guys and a Girl,’ there seems to be nothing but respect between the two actors.

“He’s a great guy, a gem, deserves all the success that he’s getting,” says Fillion, “so it’s neat to have a little piece and share it with someone you know.“

As a huge fan of Nathan Fillion, I’m eagerly awaiting the June 7th release date of ‘Emerald Knights.’ And wow, summer 2011 is shaping up to be an amazing season for comic book-based flicks. With ‘Thor’ releasing in May, ‘Green Lantern’ in June, and ‘Captain America’ in July, it’s going to be an outstanding time to be a fanboy.

So what are you looking forward to this summer? Be sure to let us know in the comments section.

James Gunn Gives Us A Release Date For ‘Super’

by Sebastian Suchecki, Nov 30 2010 // 10:00 AM

Ever since the first footage of the film crept it’s way through the tubes of the internets, fanboys everywhere have been clammoring for more of James Gunn’s upcoming super hero comedy Super, and it looks like we’re finally going to have a date to drool over.

In keeping with his constant fan service, Gunn gave us the scoop on his official blog, as well as reaching out for people to request the film in their towns.

It’s true: SUPER will be opening on April 1st, 2011.  That first week we will be in only Los Angeles and New York.  However, on the following week, April 8, 2011, we will be in fifteen to twenty of the twenty-five biggest markets in the United States.  Around that same time, we will also be available on VOD.  And, after that, only God knows – perhaps more cities, perhaps not.  It depends a lot on what you guys demand and want.

There you have it. And yes, if you live in a small town and want to see Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page, Liv Tyler, Kevin Bacon, Nathan Fillion, and Michael Rooker in this hilariously violent super hero comedy, be sure to keep an eye out and demand that it comes to you as soon as you can.

Exclusive: Andrew Marlowe Discusses Marvel’s Plans For A Nick Fury Movie

by Matt Raub, Oct 28 2010 // 10:00 AM

Back at Comic-Con, Castle creator Andrew Marlowe spilled the beans on a Nick Fury script he had written for Marvel. Last we heard he was still tweaking it and about to hand it over to the studio, and it looks like that’s exactly what he’s done.

We recently got a chance to catch up with Marlowe in between scenes on the set of ABC’s Castle to discuss his plan for the first agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. and he believes a Fury movie based on his script has great potential.

It’s been in Marvel’s hands for a while. They’re point of view is that Nick has never supported his own comic book. It’s only been special runs or one-shots.

I think that they have questions whether the audience will show up for a character if they spent $150-$200 million on a movie. Crashing the helicarrier? Very expensive.

My script was more along the lines in a Steranko mode. Like the American James Bond. I think with Sam Jackson, they’ve gone in a different direction from my script, but I think that if that character continues to excite audiences, I think that there are ways to do it. I haven’t read The Avengers script yet, but I know they guys at Marvel are smart in terms of the intersection of the creativity, the fun, and the commerce of it all.

Right now, it’s in their very capable hands, and I have faith in them.

Heroes Go Bad In The First Clip From James Gunn’s ‘Super’

by Matt Raub, Sep 23 2010 // 1:00 PM

Mum has been the word as to the look of James Gunn’s upcoming superhero comedy Super starring Rainn Wilson and Ellen Page. We know what a few of the costumes look like, and we know who is in the flick. But as to the tone and visual style, we haven’t gotten many clues. Until Now.

Just about one week after the deal was struck for IFC Films to purchase distribution rights for the film, the very first clip has surfaced showing off both Wilson and Page in their full superhero garb, and it looks pretty cool.

The clip may not be 100% SFW due to language, but it’s surely 100% hilarious. The premise is a bit simple. After his wife falls under the influence of a drug dealer, an everyday guy transforms himself into Crimson Bolt, a superhero with the best intentions, though he lacks for heroic skills. Include a psychotic sidekick (Ellen Page) and you’ve got the full scope.

Check out the first clip from the film after the jump, and be sure to keep your eyes open as we see more from the film and even get a release date from IFC Film’s Midnight banner head.

‘Firefly’ Gets An Awesome Fan-Made 80′s Intro

by Matt Raub, Jul 13 2010 // 8:00 AM

Joss Whedon fans (or “Whedonites) may be loyal, but their loyalty is nothing compared to their originality when it comes to their idol’s creations. They’ve given us some cool art, and plenty of fan vids to swoon over, and now it’s Firefly’s turn, as it gets a classic 80′s makeover. Well, at least the intro titles do.

The original intro was good, and just about every fan knows the lyrics, but it didn’t do much for the typical sci-fi fan. The cool cats over at io9 put together this little 80′s rendition of the Firefly intro, in all of it’s Western/Deep Space glory. Think of Quantum Leap meets Brisco County Jr., all squeezed into about 90 seconds.

Check out the intro video after the jump, and if you’re asking yourself “What about Simon Tam??”, it seems that he deserved his own personal show.

Jeremy Renner In Final Negotiations To Play Hawkeye in ‘The Avengers’

by Matt Raub, Jun 7 2010 // 7:00 AM

It seems like Marvel can do no wrong with casting and news for their upcoming Avengers flick. First, fanboy superstar Joss Whedon is announced as the director, and now it seems fan favorite Jeremy Renner will be taking on the role of Clint Barton a.k.a. Hawkeye.

Speculation started a few months ago that the Hurt Locker actor would join the upcoming Joss Whedon-helmed Marvel pic, The Avengers, but not much evidence came through to make us believe it was going to happen. It seems that it was true all along, as Jeremy Renner is currently finalizing the deal with Marvel Studios to carry the bow-and-arrow. From THR:

Renner’s involvement was initially rumored last fall, although the actor, who was in the middle of the awards derby with his war thriller “The Hurt Locker,” was at the time more taken with Paul Thomas Anderson’s untitled drama and was being heavily courted by Universal for “Battleship.”

Renner never joined “Battleship,” and while he still has definite interest in Anderson’s film, that project is still cobbling financing and has seen its start pushed back several times.

Renner saw a chance to take on work in a role that, while key, is not starring in nature and will allow him to slide into Anderson’s film if it should come together.

The actor will be joining an already full cast of Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Sam Jackson, Don Cheadle, Chris Hemsworth, and Scarlett Johansson. If you are one to believe IMDb’s rumored casting, that group also includes Malin Akerman as The Wasp and Nathan Fillion as Ant Man.

Joss Whedon’s The Avengers is currently set for release on May 4, 2012.
