E3 2010: ‘Fallout: New Vegas’ Trailer with Gameplay

by John Carle, Jun 16 2010 // 3:00 PM

Of all the games coming out over the next year, there is only one that you could instantly pick out from just the music chosen for the trailer. With a song perfect for a 1940′s Vegas lounge, Fallout: New Vegas dropped its latest trailer at E3. In it, gamers were given their first peek at just what is in store for them in one of the few towns that was not devastated by the nuclear war that created the Fallout world.

Though not a direct sequel in the Fallout series, Fallout: New Vegas inhabits the same world as Fallout 3 with its events taking place three years after. The trail below shows a barren desert surrounding the cesspool of Vegas inhabited by the same mutated dogs and Super Mutants that have plagued other Fallouts along with some fantastically devastating weaponry. It’s kind of sad that in a world torn apart by war, players are going to further tear it down… Actually, from the look of this trailer, it’s pretty damn cool. I can’t wait to shoot a rocket launcher of my own at one of those “Jingle Jangle Jingle” playing robots either.

The New California Republic. Sniper rifles. Green toxic waste. An Elvis impersonation school. Crucifixions. What’s not to love in this trailer? If this is what Obsidian Entertainment has cooking up for us with Fallout: New Vegas we say bring it on. But don’t take our word for it. Take a peek below at the E3 2010 trailer for Fallout: New Vegas and let us know what you think.

Game Review: ‘Blur’ for XBox 360

by John Carle, Jun 8 2010 // 1:00 PM

XBox 360 (Also available on PlayStation 3 and PC)
Publisher: Activision
Developer: Bizarre Creations
$59.99
Score: 8.0

Growing up, we all loved Mario Kart. There was something about getting four friends together and surrounding a TV, playing split screen and systematically screwing over your best friend at the last second with a well timed red shell to capture first place. The series continued to shine as it moved from Super Nintendo all the way to the Wii but at the same time, it didn’t feel like that different of a game. Instead, it was more of a wash, rinse, repeat formula with updated graphics. And we all grew up along the way as well.

Don’t get me wrong, I still love the fat plumber who seems to be stuck in platonic-friend-land with Princess Peach even though he has saved her life a million times. But eventually, go carts don’t do it for me anymore. When I think of a racing game I could walk out of a store purchasing, it has real cars in it. I still want the insane chaos of blowing my friends off along the way though. Enter Blur.

Gameplay:

Blur is everything described above and then some in terms of gameplay. Instead of just mirroring what Mario Kart did well, Blur improves upon it. Instead of straight up races with weapons, Blur features multiple game modes. While it does feature the traditional combat racing, I’ll get back to that in a second. Also included are Checkpoint and Destruction modes.

Checkpoint is pure speed. Players need to cut corners perfectly, time speed boost power-ups to the millisecond and collect stopwatches to add more time as they try to not just finish a race within its time frame, but to have as much time left as possible on their leaderboard score. There is no true opponent in this mode as players are only racing against themselves. For people who love time trial modes, this is where they will find themselves most.

First Trailer for ‘Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light’ Goes Live

by John Carle, May 18 2010 // 9:00 AM

As we previously reported, Lara Croft is making her return to gaming this summer. But even though she’s no longer under the Tomb Raider moniker, don’t think Lara is changing her MO. She is still going through dark underground lairs in search of treasure.

But this game will not be a full retail release. Instead it will be a digital download only game. In addition, gameplay will drastically be changing as it takes a 3/4 overhead view which resembles a dual stick shooter than a traditional third person action platformer.

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light stars Lara Croft as she discovers the lost Temple of Light, resting place of the ancient artifact the Mirror of Smoke. When she finally reaches the mirror, she is ambushed by a devious Mercenary named Vasco and his army. Vasco steals the mirror and releases the evil Xololt who was imprisoned in the mirror.

As you will see in the trailer after the jump, Lara isn’t alone as she teams up with Totec in her first ever cooperative adventure. Hopefully Totec doesn’t whine about his wife the whole game like Dom insists on in Gears of War. It’s refreshing to see Crystal Dynamics attempt to take this series in a new direction much like Ensemble Studios did to the Halo franchise with Halo Wars.

While keeping to the core mythology, they created a drastically different gaming experience still keyed in on what players loved about the Halo world. We are hoping to see the same with Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light.

Latest ‘Singularity’ Trailer Arrives

by Chris Ullrich, May 18 2010 // 7:00 AM

I’ve been waiting for this game since I first saw some previews for it at last year’s E3 show in Los Angeles. And now, thanks to our friends at Activision, we have the first in a four-part trailer series for Singularity to share with you today. This trailer features the age and revert function of the Time Manipulation Device and how it works within the game’s environment. This looks like an awesome game full of fun, exciting ways to snuff out your enemies.

In case you’re not familiar with the game (or just don’t want to click a link), it revolves around a mysterious island known as “Katorga-12″ where Russian experiments involving element “E99″ took place during the height of the Cold War. A catastrophe known as the “Singularity” occurred on the island. In the game you are Nate Renko, an Air Force pilot who is sent to investigate radiation emissions coming from the island, only to crash land there.

After regaining consciousness, Nate finds the TMD (Time Manipulation Device) and discovers that the island is constantly shifting between 1950 and 2010. Renko’s goal is to find his co-pilot, escape the island and eventually prevent the Singularity from occurring and potentially destroying not only the island, but the entire human race.

I, for one, cannot wait for it. It looks awesome. Singularity ships for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC on June 26th. Until then, check out the trailer after the jump. By clicking through, you certify you are 18 years of age or older.

‘Call of Duty: Black Ops’ Teaser Trailer Drops

by John Carle, May 3 2010 // 8:00 AM

Activision didn’t waste any time on this one. After Friday’s blockbuster announcement of Call of Duty: Black Ops, they have already launched a site for the game as well as its first teaser trailer. Not risking losing sales to their competitors, Gamespot, Best Buy and Amazon are already offering preorders for the game, despite next to no information about it being available except for its November 9th release date.

Below you will get a first look at the action of Call of Duty: Black Ops. From the looks of things, the game will stick to the darker tones set by the story of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Developed by Treyarch, the same studio that did Call of Duty: World at War, Black Ops looks to tell the story of a soldier who has seen a tremendous and treacherous military career. Set in a modern era, inner cities and lush jungles look to be the environments players will fight through. From the looks of things, players will also get the chance to pilot a helicopter and repel down a cliff side as well.

It also appears that the game’s engine has been much improved on as the visuals become even more stunning with fantastic water and explosion effects. The environments seem to react more naturally as well, like the blinds in the office blown up late in the trailer bending and contorting individually or the separate boards of the rope bridge flying apart independently.

Take a look at the full teaser trailer after the jump and as always, stick with us for all your video game news as it becomes available. Remember, by clicking through to watch the video you certify you are eighteen years of age or older.

Game Review: ‘Just Cause 2′ for XBox 360

by John Carle, Mar 30 2010 // 1:00 PM

XBox 360 (Also Available on PC and Playstation 3) – Square Enix – $59.99

Most gamers playing now can look back and remember their first time stepping in to the ultra-violent sandbox of Grand Theft Auto III. Given run of a city where ever car could be stolen and every pedestrian was a target to run over and every cop could be shot at. It quickly brought out the dark side of many people who were just looking to live life on the other side where they finally got to be the bad guy. Even though the game’s narrative didn’t require the player to become a violent terrorist who got hookers and then killed them after to get their money back, that’s pretty much what all of us became.

Just Cause 2 takes that to a whole new level. Taking that original Grand Theft Auto III formula and adding helicopters, planes, boats, a grappling hook and unlimited parachutes, the mayhem that can be caused is elevated even further. Add in a story and game mechanic that not only encourages but actually requires destruction and chaos, you have a recipe for disaster (the good kind that is).

Gameplay:

The fictional patch of islands known as Panau stretches across 400 square miles of in game world. Every inch of it, be it desert, mountain, city, swamp, beaches and all of the airspace above it are areas for mayhem. Using the game’s 200 vehicles and a variety of upgradable weapons from handguns to rocket launches, players are given the opportunity to cause chaos (measured by an on screen Chaos meter which unlocks more missions and black market shopping opportunities) by destroying statues, oil tanks, gas stations and weaponry of the Panau government. In the process, government forces are summoned depending on the level of chaos being caused. A few frag grenades can quickly lead to helicopters raining down machine gun fire on our protagonist.

‘Just Cause 2′ Demo Coming March 4th

by John Carle, Mar 2 2010 // 7:00 AM

Fans of Just Cause will be pleased to find out that they will get a sneak peek of the sequel which is set to release on March 26th. Just Cause 2, which featured one of the most creative interactive trailers, will have a demo available for the PC, XBox 360 and PlayStation 3 on Thursday, March 4th.

Just Cause 2′s demo looks to set itself out from the crowd with a massive 35 square mile area of the game’s 400 square mile locale. Lee Singleton, General Manager of Square Enix’s London Studios said that “The Just Cause 2 demo is simply massive and with so much to do, the replay value is enormous… It’s easily one of the biggest freeroaming demos of all time and for fans of openworld games, it’s unmissable.”

From the looks of things, Square Enix and Eidos don’t believe in the “less is more” mentality and want to show everyone just what they have to offer. As seen in the trailer, Just Cause 2′s demo will allow players near limitless combinations of ways to tackle situations at hand or just provide a pure freeroaming balls to the wall action experience.

X10: ‘Dead Rising 2′ Set to Hit Shelves August 31 With Exclusive XBox 360 Prologue

by John Carle, Feb 15 2010 // 11:00 AM

After just over a year since the announcement of Dead Rising, Capcom announced at X10 that Dead Rising 2 would be coming to North America for the XBox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC on August 31st. In addition, the game will hit Japanese shelves on September 2nd and Europe on September 3rd.

In addition, XBox 360 owners will receive an exclusive downloadable prologue to the game entitled Dead Rising 2: CASE ZERO. CASE ZERO will give players an introduction to the series new front man Chuck Green and help bridge the gap between the events of Frank West and the outbreak of Willamette, CO in Dead Rising to Dead Rising 2′s Fortune City setting.

In addition, Capcom revealed at X10 a new mechanic to Dead Rising‘s gameplay where players would be able to combine a variety of weapons together to create even more fearsome combinations. It looks like the chainsaw motorcycle we saw a few months ago was just a hint of what is to come with these deadly weapons combos.

Dead Rising 2 looks to prove that the most important item on the planet is duct tape as it can be used to attach knives to boxing gloves, gas canisters to water guns and garden rakes to car batteries in an effort to eviscerate and mutilate in very creative ways, while still trying to stay alive at the same time.

Click through to take a look at some newly released screens and video from Dead Rising 2.

‘Bioshock 2′ Launch Trailer Hits The Web

by John Carle, Feb 4 2010 // 9:00 AM

Bioshock was one of the unexpected gems of late 2008. With its immerse story and compelling narrative style, this first person shooter left people wanting more. Even with a lackluster final battle, Bioshock took the video game world by storm and had people clamoring for more of Rapture, the underwater world created by Andrew Ryan in hopes of a Utopian society.

Since its announcement, Bioshock 2 has been one of the driving forces of the video game world, especially with the announcement of a multiplayer mode being added. Coming February 9th to the XBox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, 2K games let the world see the game’s final release trailer on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

They took the same approach of gameplay-styled footage in the first person perspective but this time put the viewer in to the head of the Big Daddy character they will be playing as. This trailer also gives people their first glimpse at the power of a Big Sister in the heat of battle.

Take a look for yourself at the trailer after the jump and stay tuned to The Flickcast for more info on Bioshock 2 as it becomes available.

Could This Be The End of the ‘World of Warcraft’?

by John Carle, Feb 3 2010 // 8:00 AM

After so many years and millions of hours of play logged in, will players finally reach the end of World of Warcraft? Back on one of our podcasts, we talked about one young man who achieved every possible accomplishment in the game, which is the closest thing at the time to “beating” World of Warcraft.

Now the tale of Arthas, a piece of Warcraft mythology going back to Warcraft 3 and an integral part of the current status quo of WoW will seemingly be coming to an end. With the upcoming Patch 3.3.2, the story of the “Wrath of the Lich King” expansion comes to an end in perfect time for the upcoming “Cataclysm” expansion.

As they prepare for the world to cave in on itself in upheaval, the strongest and bravest venture to the throne of the Lich King for an epic battle. To give added incentive, the culmination of this battle awards players with a special cinematic cut scene detailing the end of this chapter in the World of Warcraft, but also intelligently shows how the story is able to continue for other players as well.

The final cinematic after the jump, concerning the fate of the Lich King, is pretty spoilerific so don’t say we didn’t warn you. But for those who don’t feel like grinding thousands of hours into a game to reach this point, take a peek at the “end” of Warcraft.
