E3 2011: New ‘Prototype 2′ Trailer Released

by Chris Ullrich, Jun 6 2011 // 10:00 AM

With E3 being this week you can expect a slew of new trailers, screenshots and major announcements from video game producers, publishers and hardware companies. Among those announcements is Activision’s release of the new trailer for its upcoming title Prototype 2.

In case you’re not familiar with the game, it deals with the exploits of Alex Mercer (voiced by Barry Pepper) who wakes up on a morgue slab with no memory. Alex escapes and sets out to recover his memory and find out exactly what occurred. He soon discovers he now possesses powerful shapeshifting abilities that grant him superhuman strength, speed, agility, durability, weaponry and the ability to “consume” people to gain their memories, skills and appearance.

Alex is forced to track down and consume those related to the conspiracy in order to uncover the truth. During his quest, Alex must face and overcome both the military charged with containing the incident and a horde of infected monsters who’s only thought is killing him. And that, my friends, is the basis for some great action.

Click through to check out all the awesome action in this brand new trailer. Look for Prototype 2 to hit stores sometime in 2012.

Developers Tell You Why Alex Mercer is the Villain in ‘Protoype 2′

by John Carle, Apr 22 2011 // 10:00 AM

That has been the question on the minds of many once they heard Alex would no longer be the star of Prototype 2. Activision and Radical Entertainment sent over a developer interview discussing this change, which can be seen after the jump, and the logic fits.

In Prototype, players spent so much time building up Alex’s power and in doing so reveal the mystery in to how he (SPOILERS) was actually the one who unleashed the virus upon Manhattan and the world. As a result, Alex is now a super powered entity with absolute power corrupting him absolutely.

On the opposite side of Alex, players have James Heller, a man who has lost his family to the virus that Alex unleashed. While his motives remain to be seen, Alex directly infects Heller with his virus which gives him powers much like Alex’s instead of killing him as it did so many others over the course of Prototype.

Also shown in the trailer below is Pre-Alpha gameplay footage. Usually games won’t show footage this early on but what can be seen is impressive. There will obviously be lots of polish put over the game before its 2012 release but things look to be on a strong course with new attacks and powers for Heller to use in his battle against Alex.

Take a peek after the jump at the story of Alex and Heller in Prototype 2 and stick to the Flickcast for more news on it as it becomes available.

‘Prototype 2′ Teaser Trailer Answers One of Life’s Deepest Questions

by John Carle, Feb 28 2011 // 8:30 AM

Penny Arcade is known for their stirring satyrical commentary of the video game and geek world. Back when Prototype was released, they posed the question: “In Prototype, you can do karate kick on a helicopter. What the f**k else do you want?” When we played through the game, we would have been hard pressed to come up with an answer. Now, the good folks at Activision and Radical have found it for us.

Even though it is at least a year away with a 2012 release date, we are keeping a eye out for any information we can get about Prototype 2. This time, without going head to head with Infamous, Prototype 2 will get a chance to shine on its own as the story of the antihero in a world gone mad. We hope the team at Radical is able to take what they learned from the original game and improve upon the success of the franchise.

Take a peek below at the new teaser trailer showing some of the first action from Prototype 2, also plugging the exclusive first look coming to EGM in April. Stick to the Flickcast for more on Prototype 2 as it becomes available.

Activision Reveals ‘Prototype 2′

by Chris Ullrich, Dec 13 2010 // 11:00 AM

Our friends at Activision and Radical Entertainment are back with a sequel to their best-selling game of 2009: Prototype. This new game, currently called Prototype 2, is currently in development and to kick things off we’ve got the first reveal trailer of the game for you today.

“When PROTOTYPE surpassed 2MM units we knew gamers would want a sequel to find out what happens next with Alex Mercer,” said Ken Rosman, Studio Head, Radical Entertainment. “The team here at Radical is sincerely grateful to the fans and we are laser focused on delivering an even bigger and better experience with PROTOTYPE 2!”

New ‘Prototype’ Hints and Tips Video Arrives

by Chris Ullrich, Jul 9 2009 // 3:00 PM

prototypeIf you’re a fan of excellent games where you get to blow lots of stuff up and mutate into cool shapes and then kill your friends, then the game Prototype is for you. Previously, our own John Carle gave a preview of the game for you to enjoy. And now, with the game in the hands of eager players (and very popular here at The Flickcast fortress), some players may be asking themselves for a bit of help when navigating the game’s obstacles.

Fortunately, the folks at Activision have heard your requests and have put together a very nice “Hints” video that contains lots of tips, hints and “stupid chopper tricks.” They’ve also kindly shared it with us so we can bring it to you. So, if you’re stuck somewhere in the game and unsure what your next move should be, this video might just be the thing you’re looking for.

Prototype is for all next-gen platforms and is available now. Check out the video after the jump. And if you do, seeing as how this is an “M” rated game, by clicking through you certify you are 18 years of age or older.

First Impression: Activision’s ‘Prototype’ Shows It’s Good to Be Bad

by John Carle, Jun 10 2009 // 8:00 AM

prototype-military-smallPlease note this is a review of a M rated game. It is violent, bloody, contains harsh language and is not intended for children by any means. If you’re okay with that, read on.

After playing the first two hours of Prototype on the XBox 360 (also available on the Playstation 3), one thing becomes very apparent. Though you have the option to walk through the game in a stealthy manner with minimal collateral damage, that play method is far from encouraged. Why? Because Prototype makes it way too fun to be the bad guy.

Told in a story similar in style to Spider-Man: Web of Shadows, Prototype starts out with the player taking the role of Alex Mercer as New York City has been taken over by a group of monstrous life forms. As Alex fights his way through these creatures, he is also attacked by the military. Using his superpowers of super strength. Carnage-like claws and transforming tendrils that extend from his body, Alex begins an inner monologue where he explains how what has happened to the city is somehow his fault. Flashback to 18 days prior where NYC hasn’t fallen in to complete bedlam yet and Alex is just discovering his powers.

While being given specific target locations and characters he must encounter, there is no real penalty (other than the damage left on your soul) for just being a ruthless, uncaring killer. Even the game’s method of health regeneration encourages the murder of innocents. One of Alex’s ability is to grab and “absorb” a person near him to regain health. These absorptions come in the form of brutal Mortal Kombat style fatalities. Even the game’s XBox 360 Achievements lend themselves to the most brutal style possible such as “Endless Hunger” which awards the player for absorbing 200 victims and “The Butcher” which is given to a player able to kill 50 people in 5 seconds.
