The phrase “That’s what she said” has had more of a roller coaster career in the in the past 20 years than John Travolta’s career, but one thing can still be said for the former, it’s still funny.

Nobody really remembers where the phrase came from, but we do remember when it became immortal with Wayne’s World in 1992. From there, it had it’s resurgence in the later 90s for some time, and then brought back in a big way with Steve Carrell’s performance on NBC’s The Office.

Now that Thomas Lennon is in between projects, with Reno 911! coming to an end and his new series getting picked up on NBC, he now has the time to uncover these buried questions, and that’s just what he did.getting picked up

Comedy Central seems to be pretty hungry for comedian-run sketch shows lately. They recently premiered the pilot of The Jeff Dunham Show to lukewarm reception, and another show starring Gabriel Iglesias and Bill Engvall is on the way. Earlier this week, yet another show was announced, in the form of a pilot for a show starring comedian Nick Swardson.

Swardson has made his way around the stand up circuit for years now, but most people will remember him from his supporting roles in Grandma’s Boy, Benchwarmers, and You Don’t Mess With The Zohan (he must be liked by the Sandler camp).

The network is apparently more than happy to add Swardson’s creativity to the growing camp of Comedy Central’s original programming. From The Hollywood Reporter:

“We love Nick at Comedy Central and even more importantly, our audience loves Nick,” said Comedy Central programming president Lauren Corrao.  “We’ve seen it in his movies, his stand-up, with his ‘Reno 911!’ character ‘Terry,’ and in the work he’s done developing Gay Robot.  We can’t wait to expand his creative voice into a sketch series.”

The series will include digital shorts, man-on-the-street segments and animation inspired by Swardson’s online character, “Gay Robot” (about a gay robot and his frat boy friends).

The show is set to go into production next month and premiere early next year. Until then, you can catch Swardson in the upcoming Adam Sandler comedy, Born To Be A Star, about an actor who moves to Los Angeles to pursue his destiny in porn.

Let’s be honest, everybody who had ever sat through an episode of Reno 911 in its 6 years on the air knows how heartbreaking it was when the show got canceled two months ago. The show kept the flame of MTV’s The State burning for over a decade after the show had originally aired. It looks like NBC feels the same way, as they have hired Reno creators Thomas Lennon and Ben Garant for a new comedy series.

Lennon and Garant (who played Reno’s Jim Dangle and Travis Junior respectively) signed a deal with NBC and Universal Media Studios for a pilot commitment, which means if nothing else, we will get one episode. The team will write, star, and executive produce the series.

Those who aren’t fans of Reno or The State may know the written work of Lennon and Garant from the two Night at the Museum films, Balls of Fury, The Pacifier, and the Reno 911 feature film. The team also has a series of scripts in pre-production at a number of other studios.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, NBC was quick to pick up Lennon and Garant after news of their cancelation from Comedy Central:

“Our entire team has long been fans of the work Lennon and Garant have done on ‘Reno 911!’ as well as their comedy films,” NBC president of primetime entertainment Angela Bromstad said, noting that network brass will look for the duo “to come up with a comedy hit.”

No details have been released about the project’s premise or when we can see it hitting our TV’s, but with the purchase happening this week, you can expect to see the pilot premiere with NBC’s Fall 2010 lineup.
