Sean Bean Takes On ‘Devil’s Peak’

by Joe Gillis, May 8 2012 // 11:00 AM

First and foremost, we love Sean Bean here at The Flickcast. He’s a great actor who, unfortunately, doesn’t always seem to make it all the way through most of the projects he appears in.

That unfortunate reality seems to be about to change as Bean has been cast in not one, but three movies based on the Devil’s Peak novel trilogy. The novels, written by South African Deon Meyer, focus on Benny Griessel, a detective with Cape Town’s Serious and Violent Crimes Unit.

Bean will play Griessel in the adaptations, who’s a recovering alcoholic with family issues and other demons who also happens to be very good at catching murderers. Sounds like a role tailor made for Bean — not that he’s got issues or is a recovering alcoholic, just that we see him able to pull it off. Anyway. . .

A September start date for the first film is planned, with shooting to take place in South Africa. We will be following this one closely.

Review ‘Invictus’

by Shannon Hood, Dec 11 2009 // 2:30 PM

Matt Damon in Invictus

Clint Eastwood follows up his racially charged Gran Torrino (2008)  with a movie that is based on historical events that occurred shortly after Nelson Mandela became the president of South Africa in 1994.  Post apartheid South Africa was still deeply racially divided and Mandela had the idea that getting the entire country behind their Rugby team  (The Springboks) would help unify it.

Problem is, for a movie that is supposed to be an inspiring story about an underdog sports team that overcomes enormous obstacles to win the World Cup, the movie feels very….uninspired.  I can’t really point to anything that is inherently wrong with the film, but I never felt emotionally invested in the team, and that makes for one long, dull movie.

The acting in the movie is quite good. A buffed up, blond Matt Damon plays the captain of the rugby team, Francois Pienaar.  He’s honorable and likable, and when he is summoned by Mandela to have tea, he shows the proper respect toward the man.

His light skin and light hair represent the white minority (Afrikaners) that has held most of the power in South Africa. Damon aptly handles the South African accent and seems well suited to the role.

New Full ‘District 9′ Trailer

by Joe Gillis, Jul 16 2009 // 6:30 AM

district-9

Of all the movies coming up during the rest of this year, one that we’re particularly excited about is District 9, written and directed by Neill Blomkamp and Exec. Produced by Peter Jackson. We’ve talked about this movie before and had some info such as a poster and an earlier look at a shorter trailer for the film.

Now, we can bring you a good look at the new, full-length trailer for the sci-fi drama which stars Jason Cope, Kenneth Nkosi, and William Allen Young. At this point, we still don’t know a great deal about the story of the film. But from what we do know, an alien race has come to earth and is stranded in South Africa. At that point, the aliens are seen as yet another mistrusted minority, treated as “non-humans” and forced to live in a dangerous ghetto and work for little to no pay.

But when a human encounters some strange, non-human, technology that begins to affect him in disturbing ways, his perspective on the situation changes drastically and hes compelled to act. Expect to see District 9 in theaters August 14. Until then, click through to check out the full trailer.
