‘Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist’ Tries to Capture Audience of ‘Mortal Kombat: Legacy’

by John Carle, May 12 2014 // 8:24 AM

Street Fighter Assassins Fist

Almost four years ago, a fan made Mortal Kombat short made its way online which lead to both a resurgence in interest in Mortal Kombat and eventually two seasons of Mortal Kombat: Legacy which lived on the Machinima YouTube channel. While there were some hiccups in the storytelling and even continuity between seasons, no one could argue that Machinima put major promotion behind the series and laud its success.

Now, in a world where you’ll seemingly never see Street Fighter vs. Mortal Kombat on consoles, MK’s age old nemesis finds its way too to the Machinima channel with Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist. Backed by Capcom and Honda (which still leaves one’s head reeling), Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist will debut on the Machinima channel on May 23rd. The narrative will follow series’ favorites Ken and Ryu in their training under their master Gōken before the events of the world warrior tournament come to pass.

As seen in the trailer, Akuma will also make his way into the series and will actually be played by the show’s creator Joey Ansah. In addition to living on the YouTube channel, Content Media says it will also bring it to TV, on-demand, DVD and Blu-ray.

‘Blanka is a Troll’ May Be My New Favorite Thing On YouTube

by John Carle, Aug 26 2013 // 8:30 AM

Blanka Is a Troll

The internet is filled with pictures, gifs and videos of people failing at life in some way shape or form. These can be Jackass style stunts, car dash cams or just people who have screwed up even the most basic thing to disastrous results while someone just happened to have their iPhone out. Facebook pages featuring these pictures gain millions of fans and the compilation videos on YouTube gain millions of views.

There must be something inherently terrible about people that they enjoy watching others fail. But it doesn’t end there, after watching people fail, there is a next level of person who takes pleasure in the failures of other. That person is known as a Troll.

Launching a little over two months ago, Blanka is a Troll is a series of videos that put in sprites of everyone’s favorite electric green Street Fighter into these fail situations to hilarious results. Seeing a bride fall into a pool of water somehow becomes even funnier when it is Blanka who pushed her in. Watching a bunch of skateboarders bite it is even better when Blanka unleashed a bunch of pineapples in their path. As you’ll see in the video below, Blanka is a Troll shows just how terrible we can be as people and how we can make someone’s embarassing moment that much worse by immortalizing it and exposing it to millions of strangers online.

Loot Crate: Swag Boxes for Geeks and Gamers

by Stephanie Coats, Jul 31 2013 // 11:00 AM

Loot Crate

Just when it looked like bacon of the month club was the best subscription ever, along comes Loot Crate. Providing geeks, gamers, and anyone in between with a box of swag every month, the company is creating a community and feeding everyone’s inner collector.

Founded by Chris Davis and Matt Arevalo, Loot Crate gives Looters, as subscribers are affectionately called, a box of 6-8 items with an approximate total value of $30. By partnering directly with brands such as Marvel, DC Entertainment, Funko, Star Wars, and Nintendo, Loot Crate is able to offer authentic gear and goods.

The contents of the crate cover a wide range, everything from a Live Long and Prosper button and zombie stickers to a Star Wars Pop! Vinyl Bobble Head and Street Fighter Mini Series Blind Box. Some of the most beloved items of past crates include the TARDIS Prime shirt (featuring the Doctor’s blue box transforming into Optimus Prime) and the Space Invaders bow tie.

Not everything has been a hit but even the less popular items (bacon lip balm, for example) still delight Looters. “We would never put anything in there that we think would not resonate well with the vast majority of our community and our subscribers,” Arevalo said in an interview at San Diego Comic-Con.

The Flickcast Presents: The Bitcast Best of Gaming 2012 – Part 4

by John Carle, Jan 3 2013 // 11:00 AM

The Bitcast Best of 2012 - Part 4

This is it boys and girls. As the end of the week draws closer, so must our Best of 2012 awards from The Flickcast and Bitcast teams. Check out Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3 from earlier in the week in case you missed them. And just remember to check back tomorrow for The Flickcast’s Game of the Year Award.

Most Epic Classic Mashup – Street Fighter X Mega Man

What makes a game a classic? Unlike some Facebook pages where the average age of the viewer is thirteen which refer to Super Mario Galaxy as “classic”, we believe that for a game to earn that title, it must stand the test of time. While many series have had ups and downs, a select few have endured and kept going for more than two decades since their inceptions. Two from Capcom actually both celebrated their 25th anniversaries in 2012 so what better way to end the year than with a mashup of the two.

To conclude the 25th anniversary of Street Fighter and begin the 25th for Mega Man, Capcom distributed a full length Mega Man format game entitled Street Fighter X Mega Man for free. Available on http://www.capcom-unity.com/mega_man, Street Fighter X Mega Man started as a labor of love by a fan of the two series. After going through all the legal red tape, Capcom not only accepted the Seow Zong Hui’s idea but actually funded the completion of the game (which was delayed for a week while Seow had to study for finals).

‘Street Fighter X Mega Man’ is Coming Dec. 17th for Free

by John Carle, Dec 10 2012 // 12:30 PM

In 2010, Mega Man fans rejoiced at the announcement of Mega Man Universe which included appearences from Capcom all stars like Ryu from Street Fighter and Arthur from Ghosts ‘n Goblins… but were subsequently disappointed at its cancelation in March of 2011. Since, there has been little news on the future of Mega Man. But that didn’t mean those fans would sit back and wait. If something was going to happen, they were going to take matters into their own hands.

This past weekend, Capcom revealed the announcement trailer of Street Fighter X Mega Man. A fan made PC title, it will be distributed from Capcom’s community site www.Capcom-Unity.com. Just in time for the conclusion of Street Fighter’s 25th anniversary and the beginning of Mega Man’s, this title will be distributed for free from Capcom.

Game Review: ‘Street Fighter X Tekken’ for XBox 360

by John Carle, Mar 30 2012 // 9:30 AM

Almost two years since the first time we heard about Street Fighter X Tekken,  it has finally made its way home to consoles. Everyone wondered, how would the characters of Tekken mesh into the Street Fighter world and how the Tekken fanbase would feel about the gameplay mechanics they know and love so much for their favorite fighters being altered to match the fast paced, juggle and projectile based combat of Street Fighter. Because of the quality of the team working on the game, the answers didn’t come as a huge surprise but they were awesome to experience.

Gameplay:

Street Fighter X Tekken knew it needed to bring the best to the screen with this combination of two of the most beloved fighting franchises ever. The unique challenge of bringing the two worlds and not just their characters but their signature styles together was one of massive intrigue. Luckily, the Capcom team was able to piece together a unique tag system differing from past Capcom Vs. titles and using core Street Fighter mechanics to create a new but familiar fighting style.

While maintaining the basic three punches, three kicks and back to block control scheme, Capcom was able to put together new combinations using the tag and juggle system allowing players to not only swap characters on the fly but have multiple characters fighting at the same time on the same side. Signature special maneuver’s return in the form of Super Arts to allow for small cinematic beatdowns, giving Street Fighter’s cast their classic favorite moves while Tekken’s roster is introduced to them for the first time. In addition, the game introduces Pandora Mode, tying in to the game’s story, that allows players to sacrifice one of their characters to give their partner a limited boost (that will be fatal if they don’t win the match in time).

Final Four Fighters Revealed for ‘Street Fighter X Tekken’

by John Carle, Feb 21 2012 // 9:00 AM

With March 6th quickly closing in, Capcom has finally announced the final four characters for Street Fighter X Tekken. None of these are huge surprises for longtime fans of either series as they are either fan favorites or staples for both series. M. Bison and Akuma round out the Street Fighter roster as Jin and Ogre make their way over to team Tekken.

M. Bison, still carrying the improper name and the original boss of Street Fighter II, makes his way to the title. Akuma who has made his presence felt in almost every Street Fighter or Capcom vs. title since his creation also stands on the Street Fighter side of things, looking to be the opposition to Tekken’s Ogre. Both Jin and Ogre come to Tekken’s side of things, an interesting combination to be announced together with the history of the two characters with Ogre killing Jin’s mother. All four combatants can be seen in the trailers below.

Capcom has confirmed as well that the PC version of Street Fighter X Tekken will be released on May 11. The PlayStation Vita SKU has still not be given a release date.

In addition to all this, Capcom is launching Cross Assault on February 22nd, a week long reality show pitting top players against each other as they try to compete for $25,000 in prizes.

Check Out New Screen Shots and Trailers for ‘Street Fighter X Tekken’

by John Carle, Jan 24 2012 // 7:30 AM

As we have discussed, we can’t wait for March 6th to hit. In addition to the plethora of other games coming that date, quite possibly the biggest fighting game franchise ever will be hitting that day as well with Street Fighter X Tekken. Ever since getting hands on with it, the Flickcast has been excited to get our hands on the final build for review. And now, Capcom has only wet our appetite even further.

Capcom has added Balrog, Juri and Vega to the Street Fighter side and Paul, Law and Xiaoyu to the Tekken team of playable characters. Along with that, they have released a bunch of screens, character art and gameplay footage which can all be seen below of these six awesome fighters. Part of the excitement for these additions is that these Street Fighter characters haven’t graced a new game since Street Fighter IV as all three didn’t make it into Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and this has been the first Tekken release since 2009.

In addition, check out the fifth story trailer, also below, that gives some insight in to exactly what is happening to bring these two worlds together. Much like the previous Marvel vs. Capcom 3 trailers, they don’t really make much sense and are an excuse for action, but damn if they don’t look pretty while confusing the hell out of the viewer.

Check out the new screens and trailers after the jump. Stay tuned to the Flickcast for more on Street Fighter X Tekken as it quickly approaches its March 6th release date for the PlayStation 3 and XBox 360.

Coming in 2012: March 6th is Going To Be an Expensive Day

by John Carle, Jan 6 2012 // 12:00 PM

As we have talked out with our other recent Coming in 2012 articles, there are some big games coming out throughout the year. For the most part, these games look to be pretty spread out throughout the year… except for the collection of games announced for March 6th. Six, yes you read that right, SIX blockbuster titles will be releasing on March 6th, 2012 representing four different genres in the gaming industry.

First, fighting fans will finally get their hands on the much heralded and anticipated Street Fighter X Tekken. Back at NYCC, I had the opportunity to get hands on with the game and from what time I got with it, it has the potential to live up to the hype. It’s incredible to think about the dream matchups coming to Street Fighter X Tekken such as the wrestling heavyweight brawl expected to take place between Zangief and King or the martial artistry shown by both Ryu and Kazuya.

The Mass Effect trilogy comes to an epic conclusion with the release of Mass Effect 3. Shepard and his crew come back to earth with this action RPG along with the inclusion of a new multiplayer mode on top of the game’s signature dialogue tree and morality based decision making. Expect this game to consume the lives of those gamers who are finally just finishing their 250 romps from Skyrim.

Another game that will be getting a 3 after it is the Max Payne series. After a long hiatus, Max Payne 3 will be hitting store shelves. Years, both in game time and real life, have passed since the last time we saw Max in bullet time with his Noir dialogue and comic style storytelling.
