2011 Razzie Shortlist Announced, Tons of Love for ‘Burlesque’, ‘Twilight: Eclipse’

by Matt Raub, Jan 6 2011 // 1:30 PM

It’s that time of year again. The time when actors and actresses are honored for all the hard work they piled together in the 12 months leading up to one moment of pay off and a tiny little statue. We’re speaking, of course, about the Razzie Awards. These are the awards given out on the eve of Oscar night to those actors, actresses, and fimlmmakers who have produced some of the worst film projects to hit theaters in the past year.

Many remember last year’s big Worst Actress winner being Sandra Bullock, who went on the very next night to win an Oscar for a role in a completely different film. This year’s potentials could have the same luck, but we doubt it. Here’s the shortlist of actors from LA Times.

Among movies and actors shortlisted for the Razzies are Jessica Alba, who is eligible for worst supporting actress for four films (“The Killer Inside Me,” “Little Fockers,” “Machete” and “Valentine’s Day”), and Emily Blunt, eligible in the same category for her work in “The Wolfman” and “Gulliver’s Travels.”

The Flickcast – Episode 62: Californication

by Joe Gillis, Jul 7 2010 // 11:00 AM

This week on The Flickcast, after a week off last week, the boys are back with an all new show. This time around things area bit different as Matt is now a resident of the West Coast and both he and Chris are doing the show in the same room. Let the hilarity ensue.

In addition to all the comedy, topics such as the new Spider-Man, problems with the iPhone 4, the new Harry Potter movie, Twilight: Eclipse, The Last Airbender, Hollywood’s strange accounting practices and a whole lot more get discussed and debated. Chris and Matt also make some new picks this week including Matt’s pick of the TNT’s new show Memphis Beat and Chris’ pick of the 1973 Charlton Heston starrer Soylent Green.

As always, if you have comments, questions, critiques, offers of sponsorship or whatever, feel free to hit us up in the comments, on Twitter, at Facebook and MySpace or via email.

Box Office: ‘Eclipse’ Leads an Explosive Weekend

by Shannon Hood, Jul 5 2010 // 8:00 AM

*Note: this column was written on Sunday, so four-day totals that include Monday’s receipts will differ from these numbers.

It was no surprise that The Twilight Saga: Eclipse dominated the weekend box office. The film made $69 Million over the weekend.  Add in a record breaking $30M midnight take on Tuesday night,  and Wednesday and Thursday’s totals, and the movie has made $161 Million as of today.

It did fall short of breaking the all-time opening day record set by its  predecessor New Moon, which made $72 Million on its opening day. Eclipse came awfully close, making about $68.5 in the same time frame.  At any rate, Eclipse recouped its budget of $69 Million in one day.

We can expect the film to drop off quite a bit in upcoming weeks, as the series historically has been very front loaded, but this film does seem to be getting good word of mouth, so the drop off might not be as steep.

The Last Airbender did a lot better than I expected it to.  Obviously the built in fan base helped elevate the critically reviled film to an okay opening weekend.  Airbender made $40 Million over the weekend, but since it opened on Thursday, its total is now $56 Million.

That’s still a long way from its $150 Million budget, though, and word of mouth has been brutal, so the movie may fall off considerably after this weekend.  If so, it will be a disaster for Paramount, which has sunk about $280M into the film between the budget and marketing.  It also leaves the future of the franchise, and the career of director M. Night Shyamalan hanging in the balance.

Toy Story 3 is still going strong in its third week in release, making another $30 Million.  This brings its total to $289 Million.  Finding Nemo is Pixar’s highest grossing movie of all time, with $339 Million in ticket sales. It is looking highly likely that Toy Story 3 will exceed that during its theatrical run.

A Geeky Girl’s Guide to Summer Movies Part 2: They Want Your Money

by Diane Panosian, Jun 8 2010 // 12:00 PM

If like me, you have survived the onslaught of witty repartee between Iron Man and War Machine, time standing still in Robin Hood, and the hot mess of CGI and Jake Gyllenhaal in Prince of Persia then you are ready for what awaits you in June. Make no mistake, you may not have the monster in Manolo’s, otherwise known as Carrie Bradshaw, to suffer through but you do have a mêlée of 80’s rehashes that studios happily throw money at.

So, suit up, grab your popcorn, and prepare yourself for the next adventure that await you.

JUNE

June 4th

Ondine

Were you expecting a description of The A Team perhaps? At this point, anyone who is seeing The A Team on Friday already has their tickets, and even my words of wisdom will be unable to stop them. Instead I’ll spotlight a film that deserves attention.

Ondine is an independent film starring Colin Farrell as a fisherman who pulls up a beautiful woman in his nets. His sick, precocious daughter believes she is a Selkie, a Scottish seal who becomes a human wife on land. Time will tell if she is really as she seems.

Geekiness Factor: As a fairytale set in the modern era, it combines Splash and Heroes with a dose of romanticism and second chances. This movie works because it doesn’t use CGI, in fact the only special effects it uses comes from your very own imagination in overdrive. Its sense of wonder on faith, entrances you back to a time when you still believed in Santa Claus.

Screen Steamer: Colin Farrell has served me a heap of B movie bad boy charm in past films like The Recruit, S.W.A.T., not to mention a harmonious turn in Crazy Heart. Here he takes off his shirt only once, but seems well cast as a fisherman down on his luck and striving to be sober. Alicja Bachleda keeps you guessing as Ondine, which means “from the water.” She is alluring with a subtle sensuality in ocean soaked dresses, only coming up for air to coyly flirt with a scruffy Colin.

Brand New ‘The Twilight Saga: Eclipse’ Poster Revealed

by Heather Toshiko, Mar 24 2010 // 12:00 PM

Here it is Twilight fans your first look at the brand new poster for the upcoming third installment of the big screen Twilight franchise, otherwise known as The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. In this new poster it would seem the focus is shifting from our two male rivals Edward Cullen and Jacob Black towards our favorite female inhabitant of Forks, WA Bella Swan.

She’s front and center and clearly dominating the world these boys live in. Plus, as aptly described by the poster’s tagline of “It all begins with a choice” we know that Bella’s in the driver’s seat for this movie and probably for the rest of the series as well. Sure, she will probably be unsure and hesitate ,but in the end she’ll make the only decision possible and choose her true love.

Until then, you can count on lots of fighting, drama, rain, shirtless vampires and werewolves and teen angst.

Check out the full poster after the jump. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse hits theaters on June 30th.

First Teaser For ‘The Twilight Saga: Eclipse’ Arrives

by Heather Toshiko, Mar 11 2010 // 8:00 AM

Remember a couple days ago when we brought you the preview for the first trailer for the upcoming Twilight sequel Eclipse? Good, you can forget that now as we’ve got the whole thing for you today.

And now, once we’ve seen the full teaser, it only adds to what we said earlier in the week about the film. Even if you’re not a fan of the books or the movies you have to give the filmmakers credit for casting some pretty attractive and appealing people in these roles. Plus, they really seem to know how to milk the last little bit of angsty teen emotion from these situations.

Also, director David Slade comes to the table with a rather cool vampire flick to his credit (30 Days of Night) and has shown his ability to put together some pretty nice visuals while also managing to think about character at the same time. Add all this up and I’m not exactly sure what it means but if you look at this teaser, you might be able to figure it out.

Prediction: This film will make even more money than the first two. Anyone want to bet against it?

Check out the teaser after the jump. Eclipse hits theaters June 30th.

Catch A Preview of the New ‘Eclipse’ Teaser Trailer

by Heather Toshiko, Mar 10 2010 // 10:00 AM

What can we say, there’s a brand new preview of the trailer for the upcoming third chapter in The Twilight saga, which is better known as Eclipse, and we’ve got it for you today. Courtesy of the fine folks at Extra, the teaser doesn’t really give us all that much to go on because, basically, it’s just a preview.

Still, what it does do is provide yet another reason to show shots of the cast of the film, which includes all your favorites such as Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner, and have them walking, standing, talking and otherwise looking as good as possible. The preview also clues us in just a bit on some plot points of the film, which, if you’ve read the book, you probably already know by heart.

Still, seeing even this short preview reminds us in some way why these movies are just so damn popular. They feature attractive people going through emotional times and doing it with a certain sense of urgency.

While I’m not much of a fan of these books or movies, I can certainly understand the appeal to their target audience. People love them and these characters and in the end, that’s all that really matters.

Check out the new teaser after the jump. The full trailer will debut on Friday at 9AM ET. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse hits theaters June 30th.

First Pic of Bryce Dallas Howard In ‘Eclipse’ Revealed

by Joe Gillis, Feb 17 2010 // 8:00 AM

UPDATE: Apparently, the image wasn’t supposed to be let out of the proverbial bag yet so at the request of Summit Entertainment, we’ve taken it down. But fear not, we’ll be back with it, and more, when we can.

Over at FearNet they’ve got the first pic of Bryce Dallas Howard as the vampire Victoria in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. She takes over the role occupied by Rachelle Lefevre in the first two films.

In this new pic, it looks like Howard is looking to sink her teeth into Robert Pattinson’s Edward and have him for a nice snack. Edward, obviously, doesn’t look to happy about it.

According to the site:

The new image shows Victoria (Howard) with her hands around Edward’s (Pattinson) head, preparing to kill him the old-fashioned way: by tearing his head clean off. Victoria’s boy-toy Riley (Xavier Samuel) is also present, restraining Edward who kneels in pain.

Twilight devotees will notice that nothing exactly like this happens in the book, although Edward does face off with the vengeful Victoria in the snow, so it seems as though screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg has taken some creative liberties to raise the stakes in the third, and more suspenseful, film installment.

Well, there you go. For more pics from the upcoming film, head on over to Screencrave and also check back right here for further updates on Eclipse as we get them. In the meantime, click through to see the full image.

Prior Film Commitment Caused ‘Twilight’ Recast

by Jennifer Tomooka, Jul 31 2009 // 11:15 AM

With Twilight fans all over the world scratching their heads over the decision to release Rachelle Lefevre from her Twilight commitment, it looks like the real reason why the actress was let go is finally coming to light. Additional reporting from Variety has revealed that Summit Entertainment made the decision to recast the role of Victoria after Lefevre disclosed her commitment to Barney’s Version, an adaptation of a novel by Canadian author Mordecai Richler starring Paul Giamatti and Dustin Hoffman on July 20.

The Twilight actress released a statement shortly after news broke of Howard’s casting, stating her dismay, but ultimate support of the franchise.

“I was stunned by Summit’s decision to recast the role of Victoria for Eclipse. I was fully committed to the Twilight saga, and to the portrayal of Victoria. I turned down several other film opportunities and, in accordance with my contractual rights, accepted only roles that would involve very short shooting schedules.

“My commitment to Barney’s Version is only 10 days. Although the production schedule for Eclipse is over three months long, Summit said they had a conflict during those 10 days and would not accommodate me. Given the length of filming for Eclipse, never did I fathom I would lose the role over a 10-day overlap. I was happy with my contract with Summit and was fully prepared to continue to honor it. Summit chose simply to recast the part.

Lefevre out, Howard in as Victoria in third ‘Twilight’ film

by Jennifer Tomooka, Jul 31 2009 // 7:00 AM

Twilight fans should prepare themselves for a new face when the third installment of the series, Eclipse hits the big screen in 2010. Variety is reporting that Bryce Dallas Howard has joined the cast of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, Summit Entertainment’s wildly popular vampire franchise. Howard replaces Rachelle Lefevre as the character of Victoria.

Although Lefevre originated the role in Twilight and appears in the upcoming sequel New Moon, Summit is stating scheduling conflicts forced her to leave the picture.

“We are incredibly happy that Bryce has agreed to come into the franchise,” said Erik Feig, Summit’s president of worldwide production and acquisitions. “Rachelle brought Victoria to great screen life and Bryce will bring a new dimension to the character. The franchise is lucky to have such a talented actress as Bryce coming in to fill the role.”

Eclipse begins shooting in Vancouver in August and has a release date of June 30, 2010.
