Rorschach to Play Sinestro in ‘Green Lantern’?

by Bob Starr, Oct 19 2009 // 7:00 AM

Jackie Earle HaleyWhile news about the upcoming Green Lantern movie is still pretty sketchy, details are starting to trickle in. The latest is pretty exciting. Ain’t It Cool News is reporting that Jackie Earle Haley may be playing villain Sinestro.

Haley is probably best known at this point for playing Rorschach in Watchmen which came out last April.  However, as notorious as Rorschach seemed he’ll be getting upstaged soon enough.  When next we see Haley he’ll be wearing the hat, sweater and razor glove made infamous by Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare on Elm Street reboot.   Unfortunately, as deadly as Krueger was as a nightmare serial killer can he really compare to a villain feared throughout the galaxy?  Hopefully we’ll get to find out.

In conjunction with this comes a hint that Superman may also appear in the Green Lantern film. While no details have emerged regarding this, it makes sense that DC would emulate Marvel‘s efforts to integrate their various comic book films.  Further, given the legalities DC has been facing regarding the Superman property this may help prove they are making efforts to reinvigorated the character after lackluster reviews of Superman Returns.

In other Green Lantern news, Warner Bros. has been forced to pull production from Australia:

‘Little Big Planet’ To Offer Watchmen Costumes

by Matt Raub, Sep 29 2009 // 2:30 PM

Picture 1Little Big Planet is one of those games that PS3 owners love to go gaga for, but anybody who doesn’t own one, doesn’t understand it’s allure. It has been called one of the top adventure games of the year, and easily one of the highest grossing PS3 exclusive games to date, and news like today’s is only further reason.

For those unaware, Little Big Planet is about an 8-centimeter hero who travels through a world we never see, due to the fact that it’s so small. The sack-boy gets into side-scrolling adventures left and right and with your help, makes it out alive. One of the most intriguing things about LBP is the how deep you can customize your character. there are thousands of costumes and add-ons in the game, with more and more being released through downloadable content.

It was just announced that a new, geek-friendly set of costumes will be coming to PS3 this Thursday, in a set of Watchmen costumes. From here, you can choose to dress as lil’ Roarschach, lil’ Ozzy, lil’ Silk Spectre, and lil’ Night Owl. No word on whether we’ll see tiny Doc Manhattan, but this is still a pretty cool add-on to an already in-depth game. Those who follow the developer blog at littlebigplanet.com know that the creators are such big fans, that they even created a level based on San Diego Comic-Con this year.

Check out the full picture of the Watchmen costume kit after the jump, along with a super brief intro video showing you what they look like next to giant-sized Manhattan.

Night Owl joins ‘The A-Team’

by Bob Starr, Sep 22 2009 // 10:00 AM

patrick-wilson-1The A-Team cast continues to grow with the addition of Patrick Wilson who will play a CIA operative in the new film. Wilson joins the star lineup of Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper, Quinton Jackson, Sharlto Copley and Jessica Biel.  If you don’t recognize Wilson’s name you’ll probably remember him best for his role as Night Owl II in Watchmen.

Wilson delivered a great performance as the second Night Owl. Not only did he convey a sense of mundane self-deprecation but in complete contrast brought some serious action scenes to the film as well. All that and he still found the time for a pretty good love scene with Silk Spectre II (Malin Ackerman). That range of acting should help Wilson craft a worth ally, or adversary, for The A-Team.

The A-Team rides into theaters June 11, 2010.

Interview: Zack Snyder on ‘Watchmen’ and the ’300′ Sequel

by Matt Raub, Jul 28 2009 // 9:30 AM

zac-snyder-watchmenNot many directors will go down in history being considered a faithful comic book film adaptor, and not many even want the title. Zack Snyder not only earns that moniker, but makes it his own. With his first major adaptation being Frank Miller’s 300 back in 2006, he was immediately up for the idea of taking on another project, one that many called “Unfilmable”.

Last year, he took on Alan Moore’s Watchmen, which was, as the trailer stated, the most celebrated graphic novel in history. Last week, his director’s cut of the film, which had an extra half hour of footage, hit DVD stores, and select theaters, across the country.

We were able to speak with the “legendary visionary” himself at Comic-Con in San Diego. In the interview, Snyder discussed what had to get cut from the original film and why, where the franchise could go from here, and what he and Frank Miller have planned for a sequel to 2006′s 300.

Check out the full video after the jump. Watchmen: The Director’s Cut is now in stores everywhere.

Novel Adaptations: How Close Should They Be?

by Christina Warren, Jul 22 2009 // 1:00 PM

script-cw-0709The release of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince has reopened discussions about what makes a good book to film adaptation. The Potter series often divides fans, and the latest chapter is no exception. I’ve heard from a number of fans of the book series who are  disappointed with the current film’s adaptation, while I’ve also talked to fans who are satisfied. Brad Brevet from RopesofSilicon reflected on some of the more negative fan reactions and he asks, “how faithful should film adaptations be?”

Adapting a book into a film is not an easy process. Squeezing a 300-page novel into a 120-minute film is difficult, especially if the book has lots of exposition or other elements that are not easily cinematic. For books that are rich and deeply characterized, like the Potter books, adaptation is almost always going to mean losing some characters or the minute characterizations that many fans hold dear.

That said, making an adaptation that is too close to the original work can often be just as problematic as making an unfaithful adaptation. Brevet mentions this spring’s Watchmen as an example of a film that while remarkably true to its graphic novel counterpart, still didn’t end up endearing itself to even diehard Watchmen fans. I would argue this was because despite getting the character and plot details correct, Watchmen didn’t effectively bring enough of its own cinematic virtues to the project. In contrast, Frank Miller’s Sin City was a tremendous adaptation of various vignettes from the graphic novel series, and it managed to be both accurate and bring in its own voice.

The Flickcast – Episode 14: Revenge of the Fallen

by Joe Gillis, Jul 1 2009 // 6:30 AM

revenge-of-the-fallen-posterLast week on The Flickcast, Chris, Matt and Christina discussed lots of different subjects including Megan Fox as Lara Croft, the new Conan, Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland, the return of Futurama and much more.

This week, the trio takes on some new topics such as the proposed remake of An American Werewolf in London, the Watchmen Director’s Cut, the importance of Comic-Con in San Diego, the box office success of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, changes to the number of Best Picture Oscar nominees and the tragic death of Michael Jackson.

Plus, as they do every week, your favorite team makes some great picks. Matt goes back to his youth with the Ghostbusters video game, Christina learns more about confidence scams with David Mamet’s The Spanish Prisoner and Chris just wants to be scared by his pick Slither, a horror/comedy directed by James Gunn and starring Nathan Fillion and Elizabeth Banks.

As always, if you have comments, questions, critiques or offers of sponsorship, feel free to hit us up in the comments, on Twitter and at Facebook, MySpace or via email.

Zack Snyder Gives ‘Watchmen’ Director’s Cut Details

by Chris Ullrich, Jun 29 2009 // 11:32 AM

watchmen-final-posterPreviously, we told you that director Zack Snyder’s “Director’s Cut” of Watchmen was getting a limited theatrical release. Plus, the film will be out on DVD and Blu-Ray on July 21st. But until now, we were not sure exactly what the new version contains in terms of additional footage and what Snyder really intended for the film. But now, thanks to our friends at MTV Splashpage, we know much more about the release, directly from Snyder himself.

According to the site, Snyder says: “There’s a couple Rorschach scenes; it’s a little bit more violent overall. It’s a little gorier, a teeny bit gorier; like, when Veidt’s being assassinated, the secretary puts her hand out and she gets shot in the hand – and her fingers fly off.”

As for other changes and enhancements in Snyder’s 25-minute-longer cut of the film, according to the site, the director said: “After Hollis dies, we cut to Dan and Rorschach and they go to Happy Harry’s to get some info on who’s trying to assassinate Veidt…at the end of that scene, in the theatrical version, it cuts [after they get some information].

In the longer version, Dan notices on the TV that there’s a report that Hollis has been murdered. He sees that, and then he sees a Knot Top in the bar, and he attacks him and beats the sh-t out of him, just like in the graphic novel. Then Rorschach pulls him off and says ‘not in front of the civilians!’”

Snyder’s ‘Watchmen’ Director’s Cut Gets One-Week Theatrical Release

by Joe Gillis, Jun 25 2009 // 9:30 AM

the-comedian-watchmenFor those of you who wanted more Watchmen the first time around or felt like something was missing from the film, you’re going to get your chance to see the movie the way director Zack Snyder intended. According to Variety, Warner Bros. has set a one-week theatrical release for Snyder’s director’s cut of Watchmen, which contains much of the additional footage excised from the initial theatrical release, starting July 17th at theaters in Dallas, Los Angeles, Minneapolis and New York.

Snyder made the announcement yesterday during an event at the studio to promote the DVD and Blu-ray releases of Watchmen: The Director’s Cut and 300: The Complete Experience on July 21st. The Watchmen director’s cut contains approximately 28 additional minutes of footage not seen before.

The theatrical run takes place during the week before Comic-Con in San Diego where Snyder is set to host a July 25th “BD Live” screening of Watchmen. Owners of the Blu-ray version of the film will be able to use the BD Live feature to watch the movie and discussion at Comic-Con simultaneously.

The DVD and Blu-Ray versions of Watchmen hit stores on July 21st.

Germany Gets Roarschach’s Head With ‘Watchmen’ DVD

by Matt Raub, Jun 18 2009 // 5:00 PM

watchmen-dvdJust about a month away from the release of Watchmen on DVD here in the US, Germany has already announced out their own special box set of Zack Snyder’s film adaptation. Exclusive to the Amazon Germany this August, folks over there are able to order the special edition DVD inside of a rare and bizarre-looking “Roarschach head” that probably won’t fit on their DVD shelf.

Essentially, Germany got the short end of the stick when it comes to a cool-looking Watchmen box set. It’s considered to be an “Amazon Exclusive”, which is the equivelant to the US’s exclusive Nite Owl Ship Bundle, only creepier.

The head opens up to reveal the DVD set on the inside with, what looks to be, bare essentials, while the US-Exclusive ship opens to reveal a slew of DVD’s and extras.
