SXSW Film Will Feature First Look At ‘Predators’, World Premiere of ’13′

by Chris Ullrich, Mar 3 2010 // 6:00 AM

Even with SXSW Film being just over a week away, more events are still being added to the already impressive program. This time around it was revealed today that Robert Rodriguez and Director Nimród Antal will present a “first look” at their upcoming movie Predators during the fest, which is a reboot of the film originally starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Said Rodriguez about the event: “My director Nimród Antal and I are excited to bring this first look at Predators to Austin’s SXSW Film Festival, an event that’s become vital to the filmmaking scene. Austin is my home and I’m proud that Predators was conceived and filmed here.”

In addition, it was also announced that the world premiere of Géla Babluani’s 13 would take place during SXSW as the previously announced Super Secret TBA screening. The event is part of the SX Fantastic midnight section.

The Predators “first look” will take place on Friday, March 12th at the Alamo Ritz Theater in Downtown Austin at 10:15pm and will also include a Q&A session after the event. The screening of 13 will take place at Midnight on Saturday, March 13 at the Alamo South Lamar Theater. We advise getting in line early for both of these events.

Also, be sure to check back here at The Flickcast for our extensive coverage of this years SXSW Fest.

For more info on these events, check out the full press release after the jump.

Netflix Ponders A Streaming App For The iPhone

by Matt Raub, Mar 2 2010 // 3:00 PM

With the idea of Hulu coming to the iPhone still a distant pipe dream, other services on the device seem to be closer to reality than we thought. Netflix, which is slowly but surely becoming the leading company in online movie and DVD rentals, has put out some feelers on their site to see if fans would be interested in a streaming service for the iPhone. From a survey on Netflix.com:

“Imagine that Netflix offers its subscribers the ability to instantly watch movies & TV episodes on their iPhone. The selection availability to instantly watch includes some new releases, lots of classics and TV episodes. There are no advertisements or trailers, and movies start in as little as 30 seconds. You can fast-forward, rewind, and pause or watch again. The movies & TV episodes you instantly watch are included in your Netflix membership for no additional fee.

Whenever you want to instantly watch content on your iPhone, your iPhone must be connected to a Wi-Fi network (such as one you might have at home or at work, or in public places like coffee shops, book stores, hotels, airports, etc.)

If this functionality were available, how likely would you or someone in your household be to instantly watch movies & TV episodes on your iPhone via a Wi-Fi network?”

So what could this mean? Is it just a ruse? With Netflix allegedly having an exclusive streaming deal with Xbox Live, this could mean that we won’t see anything on the iPhone for another year, but with the Apple iPad hitting stores in the coming months, that may be just enough time for us to be ready.

What are your thoughts on Netflix streaming on the iPhone or iPad? Would you use it? Comment below and let us know!

Play Video Games, Win $1,000,000

by John Carle, Mar 2 2010 // 1:00 PM

Since video games came into being, setting records or being the first to hit a huge accomplishment has driven repeated plays of even the simplest titles. From the high score on Galaga to reaching the kill screen in Donkey Kong, gamers set goals for themselves no matter how time consuming to achieve.

Just like a real game of baseball, gamers have been given the goal in Major League Baseball 2K10 to pitch a perfect game. Not out of the realm of possibilities but certainly not easy to come by. To reward the first individual to throw a perfect game, 2K Games is offering a $1,000,000 prize.

On sale today, the first player to hit a verified perfect game on either the XBox 360 or PlayStation 3 will be eligible for this prize. Also on sale for the Wii, Nintendo DS, PC, PSP and PlayStation 2, the two higher end systems were probably decided on because of their constant internet connectivity and tracking abilities (despite PlayStation 3′s rough week so far).

The feat must be accomplished in the game’s MLB Today mode and the player must select the “Major League Baseball 2K10 contest” . Ending May 1st, players are given two full months to video record the successful completion of a perfect game in which no opposing player reaches a base for any reason.

Danny McBride Gearing Up For ‘The Chadster’

by Matt Raub, Mar 2 2010 // 12:00 PM

For just about all of 2008, Danny McBride ended up being the most ubiquitous screen comedian out there based on his cameos in Fanboys, Drillbit Taylor, Pineapple Express, Tropic Thunder and more. Things got a little more quiet in 2009, as he had a starring role in Land of the Lost and the original HBO series Eastbound and Down. Now it looks like things may be picking back up for the foul-mouthed actor.

According to Pajiba.com, the story of his latest comedy is basically set up to be “What if Kenny Powers was in Wedding Crashers?”:

The project is The Chadster, which at one time had The Hangover’s Todd Phillips attached to both produce and direct. Phillips has fallen off as director, but he’s still producing the comedy, which is moving ahead with Eastbound co-writer Shawn Harwell as scribe.

The studio wedding comedy, set up at Warner Brothers and produced by Phillips’ Green Hat Films, is about a best man who has his position threatened when an eccentric, long-lost childhood friend shows up at the wedding and causes trouble.

With this news coming in, a second season of Eastbound & Down on the way, McBride starring in an adaptation of the comic book Hench, and the actor popping up in another 5 films over the next year, it seems 2010 will be a repeat of 2008 for Danny McBride.

Why Agent Sarah Walker is Chuckin Awesome

by Diane Panosian, Mar 2 2010 // 11:00 AM

My unwavering love of NBC’s geeky spy show with a heart of a Pentium chip, Chuck, began one cramped and overly air-conditioned afternoon at the San Diego Comic-Con. Many of the straight-laced network honchos had their doubts, until that one fateful day at Comic-Con changed everything.

I sat in one of the smaller rooms surrounded by geeks of all ages and gender as the cast of Chuck impatiently stood to the side awaiting our response to the debut of NBC’s latest pilot. As the first scene began, the entire audience was hooked. They erupted in sounds ranging from fits of laughter to surprised exclamations. After the credits rolled, the audience roared in rapturous applause and took to their feet in a standing ovation. The cast then ran onto the stage like rock stars playing to a sold-out crowd.

Since that day I have been an avid Chuck supporter. Chuck sky-rocketed geeky spy splendor into the new millennium by fearlessly ripping pre-conceived molds to shreds. Chuck is a computer geek who seeks to prove he can also be a super secret spy. Agent Sarah Walker is a super secret spy pretending to be his girlfriend while working at a yogurt shop. It’s as refreshing as a vanilla scoop of Pinkberry goodness that Sarah wasn’t strictly relegated to the girlfriend role.

Apple Sues Google Nexus One Maker HTC

by Chris Ullrich, Mar 2 2010 // 10:00 AM

It’s Tuesday so that must mean it’s a day for lawsuits, at least where Apple, Inc. is concerned. Case in point, our favorite fruit flavored technology company is suing hardware maker HTC for infringement of 20 patents concerning the iPhone user interface and its hardware and architecture. The lawsuit was filed with the U.S. International Trade Comission and in the U.S. District Court of Deleware.

Steve Jobs himself had this to say about the lawsuit: “We can sit by and watch competitors steal our patented inventions, or we can do something about it. We’ve decided to do something about it,” said Jobs. “We think competition is healthy, but competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours.” Yeah, he seems a bit miffed about the whole thing.

Although the Google Nexus One is not mentioned specifically in the lawsuit and HTC does make several other Android handsets, some could argue the touchscreen models interface does look quite a bit like the iPhone’s. Still, “quite a bit” does not necessarily a lawsuit make. Could it just be a bit of posturing to warn others away from trying to steal Apple’s ideas or to slow down the progress Android is making in the marketplace? Maybe.

Apple has the right to defend it’s ideas and the cash to try and punish those it deems responsible for stealing said ideas. However, I was kinda hoping to get my hands on a Nexus One when it is released for Verizon. I hope this lawsuit doesn’t hold that up. Neither HTC nor Google has issued a statement yet concerning the lawsuit.

‘Final Fantasy XIV’ Beta Coming This Month

by Cortney Zamm, Mar 2 2010 // 9:00 AM

The guys at Square Enix have a big month coming up with the release of the long-awaited Final Fantasy XIII next week and announcements that three new add-ons are in the works for Final Fantasy XI. But also on the horizon is the beginning of beta testing for Final Fantasy XIV, their newest MMO.

According to 1Up.com, the first wave of beta invites for Final Fantasy XIV will be going out beginning March 11th to those who applied back in December. The beta will expand over time for those who aren’t initially invited. The beta will only be available on PC, at first, but the game is slated for release later this year so you won’t have to wait long to get your hands on the game for PS3.

Final Fantasy XIV takes place in the land of Eorzea, whose nations have banded together after constant war to stem the threat of the Garlean Empire. When the threat subsided, the resulting peace left many soldiers  without a job. As one of these soldiers, players will form guilds, becoming adventurers.

The game will be hitting the gaming shelves for PC and the PS3 this winter, and keep it here for more details as we get closer to it’s release.

Four New Clips From ‘She’s Out Of My League’

by Matt Raub, Mar 2 2010 // 8:00 AM

With Kevin Smith’s Cop Out defying the tidal wave of negative reviews and still managing to bring in nearly $20 Million this past weekend, other studios are looking to amp up their comedies in hopes they will be a trending genre for moviegoers this year.

With that, Paramount and Dreamworks is gearing up for next week’s release of She’s Out of My League, starring Alice Eve and Tropic Thunder’s Jay Baruchel. The film throws an interesting twist into the “boy meets girl” dynamic by adding the fact that the guy is a lanky geek and the girl is a “10″. Never heard that one before, right?

The film hits theaters on March 12th, but we were lucky enough to get our hands on a few tasty new clips to share with you. Check them out after the jump. In addition to Barchel, the film also stars Mike Vogel, Debra Jo Rupp, Kim Shaw, Geoff Stults, and T.J. Miller. It hits theaters on March 12.

‘Just Cause 2′ Demo Coming March 4th

by John Carle, Mar 2 2010 // 7:00 AM

Fans of Just Cause will be pleased to find out that they will get a sneak peek of the sequel which is set to release on March 26th. Just Cause 2, which featured one of the most creative interactive trailers, will have a demo available for the PC, XBox 360 and PlayStation 3 on Thursday, March 4th.

Just Cause 2′s demo looks to set itself out from the crowd with a massive 35 square mile area of the game’s 400 square mile locale. Lee Singleton, General Manager of Square Enix’s London Studios said that “The Just Cause 2 demo is simply massive and with so much to do, the replay value is enormous… It’s easily one of the biggest freeroaming demos of all time and for fans of openworld games, it’s unmissable.”

From the looks of things, Square Enix and Eidos don’t believe in the “less is more” mentality and want to show everyone just what they have to offer. As seen in the trailer, Just Cause 2′s demo will allow players near limitless combinations of ways to tackle situations at hand or just provide a pure freeroaming balls to the wall action experience.

Grace Park Joins ‘Hawaii Five-O’ Reboot

by Chris Ullrich, Mar 1 2010 // 4:03 PM

Former Battlestar Galactica cast members keep getting more work, especially the really great looking ones (who also have some acting talent). Katee Sackhoff is currently on 24 and made a lasting impression during an appearance on The Big Bang Theory. Tricia Helfer has made appearances on Burn Notice, Human Target and will be a regular on the new TNT series Dark Blue.

And now, according to the Hollywood Reporter, her cylon pal Grace Park has picked up a new TV role as well. Park will join the reboot of CBS’ Hawaii Five-O and play Kona Kalakaua, the niece of squad member Chin Ho Kelly, which will be played by Lost‘s Daniel Dae Kim.

She’s a beautiful and smart champion surfer who is about to graduate from the police academy when McGarrett recruits her to join his team. Of course, as we already told you, McGarrett will be played in the reboot by Moonlight‘s Alex O’Laughlin. Plus, super writer/producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are in charge of the show.

However, with Park now involved, I’ve got a real reason to watch this show. And no, not just for the eye candy. . . although that doesn’t hurt.
