E3 2010: ‘Marvel vs. Capcom 3′ New Character Trailer & Screenshots

by John Carle, Jun 16 2010 // 8:00 AM

With E3 comes big announcements for big franchises. The biggest fighting game franchise war has begun with two new trailers being released for Marvel vs. Capcom 3: The Fate of Two Worlds and Mortal Kombat. Previously, we had shown you the first character trailer for Marvel vs. Capcom 3 which introduced us to a new generation of visuals for Ryu, Wolverine, Iron Man, Morganna, Chris Redfield and the Hulk.

Now, Capcom has sent out an updated trailer for E3 featuring two new company icons being added to the game’s roster. First, Marvel drops their rising star Deadpool in to the game. Thus far, Deadpool has never made an appearance in a fighting game. While he has played a part in action RPGs like X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse, Marvel Ultimate Alliance and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 as well as the Wolverine: Origins movie tie-in game, he will be given a whole new level of mayhem in the genre that looks tailor-made for the Merc with the Mouth. Guns, swords, hand to hand combat and smack talking his opponent, it just screams Deadpool.

Capcom, not being slouches either, have added Dante from the Devil May Cry franchise to the series. Dante matches up perfectly as the adversary for Deadpool as his games revolve around sword and gunplay. And he may be the one person who can drive Deadpool even crazy with his calm, cool and collective personality that Deadpool’s quips may have no effect on.

Also just in are screen shots from the event which reveal Captain America and Felicia, both from the previous Marvel vs. Capcom 2, as being playable characters as well.

Check out the updated E3 Trailer and screen shots for Marvel vs. Capcom 3 after the jump.

Fan Film Friday: ‘Iron Baby’

by Matt Raub, May 28 2010 // 8:00 AM

Though Jon Favreau’s Iron Man 2 is pretty far in the back of our collective minds by now, it’s still worth it when we come across an impressive fan film that pays homage to the multi-million dollar movie franchise. And really, who doesn’t love baby versions of your favorite characters?

It worked at a TV series for The Muppets, and even a (mildly) successful comic series for The X-Men. Now, it’s Tony Stark’s turn, as we introduce Iron Baby.

The concept is pretty straightforward. Super-genius baby who develops a suit to take down bad guys (in this case, evil Easter bunnies). The thing worth watching the video for is the CG work. The film was done by Patrick Boivin, with graphics done by the French company STROB.

Check out Iron Baby after the jump, which stars Boivin’s daughter. It’s pretty amusing, and quite visually impressive. Only one question remains at this point: How soon before Nickelodeon picks it up?

The Skrulls Could Be the ‘Big Bad’ in Joss Whedon’s ‘The Avengers’

by Matt Raub, May 20 2010 // 11:00 AM

While this is definitely a cool idea, it should be noted that this piece of news is most definitely a rumor as of now and should be treated as such.

With all eyes still on Jon Favreau’s Iron Man 2 as it continues to make money at the worldwide box office, most Marvel fans are already ready for more from the cinematic universe. We’ve got Thor on the way next and then Joe Johnston’s Captain America. But after that, everything leads to Joss Whedon’s The Avengers in 2012.

We’ve heard we’ll see just about every Marvel character in The Avengers the company currently has the film rights to including The Hulk, Thor, Cap, Iron Man, Ant Man, and Hawkeye. Now we’re getting word that the main villains of the film could be the alien race The Skrulls.

The highlight of this insider scoop (DISCLAIMER: which has not been confirmed by the studio itself) is that the shape-changing alien race the Skrulls are being used as the main antagonists for The Avengers. Not only that, but the Skrulls will ‘brainwash’ and use the Hulk in a similar fashion Loki did in the comics.

Don’t expect a full on alien invasion, though; that will have to wait for a sequel. The Skrulls’ role will be largely clandestine, similar to the way S.H.I.E.L.D. operates.

Fan Film Friday: ‘Iron Man 2′ Alternate Takes

by Matt Raub, May 14 2010 // 2:00 PM

Though the movie has been out for a week now, we wanted to make sure the majority of you saw Iron Man 2 before we posted anything else that could potentially spoil the movie. And then there’s this video.

For those of you you remember the trailer very well and saw the film, you might recall the scene where Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) kisses RDJ’s helmet and throws it off the back of a cargo plane wasn’t actually in the film. We also know how much RDJ and the rest of the cast ad-libbed while shooting.

CollegeHumor put together a great compilation of animated “alternate takes” that also didn’t make it into the film. It isn’t completely out of the question that some of these outtakes were actually shot.

They’re all pretty amusing, especially the potential to see a sequel titled Mask-O. Check out the animated clip after the jump, and you can still catch the rest of the movie (without the scene) in theaters and IMAX everywhere.

MTV Movie Award Nominee List Announced

by Matt Raub, May 13 2010 // 7:00 AM

It’s that time of the year when the regular award season comes to a halt and those “other” award shows start picking up the slack. The quotes are in place due to the fact that awards like the upcoming MTV Movie Awards are only awards in the sense that the chosen winner gets a trophy. It can’t even be called a popularity contest anymore as it’s more like the ”Twilight wins while people promote their upcoming project” awards.

Last year, Twilight collected a record four awards, which is a third of the categories given. This year, there are a few others hoping to knock the shiny vamps off of the hill like Avatar and Alice in Wonderland.

Parks and Recreation star Aziz Ansari is hosting this year, so expect some solid written material for the opening monologue and more. Check out the site to vote for your favorite film and actor/actress, and be sure to catch the 2010 MTV Movie Awards Live(ish) on June 6th at 9PM/8PM Central.

The 12:01 ‘Iron Man 2′ Screening Was Magically Marvelous

by Diane Panosian, May 11 2010 // 9:00 AM

Many, many moons ago I recall waiting with a bunch of my geeky and not-so-geeky high school pals in a never-ending line around the block for the  highly-anticipated 12:01 showing of Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace. It was a showing at our local theater, before the days of stadium seating and online ticketing. I remember that the film held a certain magic in the hours before it started.

Energy was buzzing all around us. While waiting, my friends and I played poker, tossed a football, answered trivia from boys dressed as Jedi Knights, and talked about which starship would win in a battle. Anyone who goes to Comic-Con’s geekest panel of them all, “Starship Smackdown”, knows the Millennium Falcon has been taken out of the running for winning one too many times.

But, I digress. There was excitement, magic, and a new hope that this film would be great. Sadly, I was a bit disappointed. As were many others that day.

As I waited for my friend to arrive at the 12:01 Arclight Hollywood Dome showing of Iron Man 2, I recalled those days with a bit of nostalgia. As I looked around the theater, I realized the movie-going experience had evolved.

Box Office: ‘Iron Man 2′ Doesn’t Disappoint

by Shannon Hood, May 10 2010 // 8:00 AM

Everyone knew that Iron Man 2 would handily win the box office this weekend, but estimates for the final take were all over the place.  Now the dust is settling, and Iron Man 2 looks to have made around $133 Million, which places it as the fifth best opening ever. Brisk early ticket sales were causing some to predict that Iron Man 2 might challenge the all time record for an opening held by The Dark Knight ($158 Million), but it fell quite a bit short of that.

According to Entertainment Weekly,  Iron Man 2 received an “A” Cinemascore from exiting audience members, and that will translate into great word of mouth and box office stamina.   The film didn’t face any competition from new releases, save for some smaller indie releases.  Iron Man 2 is also a bona fide international success, after two weeks in release, its international box office haul is around $194 Million.

Nightmare on Elm Street fell with a resounding thud, losing 72% of its opening weekend numbers.  Seems everyone who intended to see it saw it the first week, which is fairly typical of horror movies.  Nightmare made about $9 Million and has made $48 Million in its first two weeks.  How to Train Your Dragon was in the number three spot, and just slid past $200 Million in total ticket sales in its seventh week in release.

‘Iron Man 2′ Easter Eggs Revealed – Major Spoilers!

by Matt Raub, May 6 2010 // 9:00 AM

Since Favreau’s first Iron Man film pulled the wool over the eyes of many fans by sneaking in a special scene after the credits, fans are now on the hunt to make sure they are aware of as many secrets as possible before Iron Man 2 hits theaters at midnight tonight.

We brought you a description of this film’s post-credit sequence last week, in which we get a peak at an upcoming film from Marvel Studios. Now we’re getting a few killer screen shots of even more hidden secrets from the flick.

‘Iron Man 2′ Cologne – A Movie Promotional Tie-In That Doesn’t Stink

by John Carle, May 6 2010 // 7:00 AM

Everyone knows the drill when a new comic book movie comes out. The market gets flooded with the standard promotional tie-in products. There’s an influx of new comics featuring the title character hitting the shelves.

A new line of toys based on the movie and its characters are sure to come out. And let’s not forget the comic book turned movie turned video game which is sure to come out as well.

After these standards, any other product that can be thought of from breakfast cereal to t-shirts to birthday favors becomes fair game. Instead of sticking to the cheap themes that most movies go for to make a quick buck, Iron Man 2 has decided to step it up a notch. Pairing up with high end clothing and accessory brand Diesel, they will be releasing the Only The Brave Limited-Edition Iron Man 2 Eau de Toilette Spray.

Now, while every comic book fanboy out there wants to smell like Tony Stark, we regret to inform you that this limited edition does not smell like motor oil and cheap bourbon. Instead it is a simple repainting of Diesel’s current Only The Brave cologne bottle.

The scent is described as ” Top notes of modern leather contrast with the fresh aroma of sparkling lemon and the warmth of amber and cedar in Only The Brave, a masculine fragrance that epitomizes determination and bravery.” So while it lacks the boozehound smell, it does resemble what everyone pictures in Tony Stark.

Diesel’s Only The Brave Limited-Edition Iron Man 2 Eau de Toilette Spray can be purchased online here. Go on, you know you want some.
