In case you missed it in theatres (and chances are you did), the sci-fi thriller In Time, starring Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried, comes to Blu-Ray and DVD* today.

The first thing you might notice about In Time is how good-looking it is. Of course, being an Andrew Niccol (Gattaca, Lord of War) joint, the film is stylish and immaculate, but that’s not what I mean. I am referring to the film’s entire cast being comprised of gorgeous young actors. With the exception of two young children, every character in the film is 25 years old.

No matter how many years they have behind them, everyone from grandmothers to mob heavies are played by actors in their mid-twenties to early-thirties. Combine that with Hollywood’s natural trend towards beauty, and the effect creates what can only be described as a “model” future.

You see, in In Time‘s vision of the future, genetics have been altered to give everyone’s life a predetermined length. At 25 years old, bodies stop aging but start counting down. Everyone gets a year, but time can be earned, traded, gambled, or stolen. It is, in fact, the only currency humanity has left.

Like director Andrew Niccol’s previous film Gattaca, In Time is devoted more to its concept than showing car chases, fist-fights, shoot-outs, and your basic action staples. All those things are in the movie, but mostly they provide breaks from exploring the film’s dystopian world.

It’s a few hundred years in the future, and the worldwide currency is time. Human beings have been genetically altered to stop aging at 25, and from there, they get one year; if they don’t start working, or if they’re lucky enough to be born into a timely family, they’ll die once their clock winds down.

Everyone’s time is tracked by a digital counter in their arm, and they can exchange time by shaking arms or putting them in metal containers that store time. If you want to rob someone, it takes only a forceful arm-shake, and then plop they’re dead, and you have a few extra weeks, months, or years to live.

The wealthiest individuals can live forever, but the poor literally live day to day, and it’s nearly impossible to move up in society because the classes are physically confined to time zones. Travel between them is allowed but costly.

I’ll admit a bit of a soft spot for writer/director Andrew Niccol. He manages to create pretty amazing worlds and tell stories with style. Plus, and this is a disclaimer, I had the pleasure to work with him a bit during the making of Gattica and enjyoed it very much, so I’m probably a bit biased.

It’s with much interest, then, that I watched the new trailer for his upcoming film In Time, which Fox and New Regency released over the weekend. It’s a futuristic science fiction thriller that takes place in a world where people who want to live past age 25 have to purchase more time.

Here’s the setup: “When Will Salas is falsely accused of murder, he must figure out a way to bring down a system where time is money – literally – enabling the wealthy to live forever while the poor, like Will, have to beg, borrow, and steal enough minutes to make it through another day.”

I have mixed feelings about this news coming out of Cannes today. At least I’m happy to see this guy getting more work as I’m a fan and had the pleasure of working with him once long ago.

It seems Truman Show writer and Gattica director Andrew Nicol is taking on directing duties for the big screen adaptation of the Stephanie Meyer book The Host. The project, which is being shopped at Cannes by Inferno Entertainment and producers Nick Wechsler and Steve Schwartz and Paula Mae Schwartz, will star Saoirse Ronan.

Here’s some more info on the film:

Ronan will play Melanie Stryder, one of the last humans battling an alien species called Souls. These parasites invade human bodies, fuse to each person’s consciousness and systematically erase their personalities.

The story follows Melanie as she is captured by the aliens and implanted by a Soul called Wanderer. Wanderer wants Melanie to give up the remaining humans, but instead the alien finds Melanie to be unique in her unwillingness to surrender her consciousness.

Wanderer is so overwhelmed by Melanie’s memories and feelings that she is driven to reconnect with Melanie’s old life, which includes falling for Melanie’s boyfriend. The result is a complex, romantic and emotional human/alien love triangle.

Ever since Tina Fey’s Mean Girls, we’ve been pretty big fans of Amanda Seyfried. She went over to Big Love while she found her stride in Hollywood, then continued on more serious projects like Chloe and the box office smash Dear John. Now Seyfried is dipping into the world of sci-fi with Fox’s I’m.mortal.

The premise sounds a bit like Logan’s Run with a twist, which isn’t much of a problem seeing as how we may never get our Logan’s Run remake. Variety spells out the details of the plot.

In “I’m.mortal,” time has become the currency. Once you turn 25 and your aging gene turns off, you must buy and bank time. If you are rich enough, you can live forever. But if you run out of time, you are engineered to die automatically.

When a rebel from the ghetto is falsely accused of murdering a wealthy man for his time, he is forced to go on the run with a beautiful, rich hostage (Seyfried). Together, this duo rages against the system, living minute to minute. They discover that love is more powerful than all the time in the world.

News broke a while back that there are plans to return to the Men in Black franchise with a third film and original stars Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones would also return to reprise their roles. Smith was on board and ready to go, until another film of his got greenlit over at Fox. That film? The City That Sailed. From Variety:

Penned by Andrew Niccol, “City that Sailed” revolves around a New York street magician who is unhappily separated from his young daughter. The girl, who moves to London, finds magic candles that make her wishes comes true, with unintended consequences: The island of Manhattan separates from the continent and floats toward England, bringing her dad ever closer. There’s no director yet on the project.

Smith has been off-screen for some time and hasn’t had a hit since his 2008 film Hancock (which is also being talked about for a sequel). Smith has been wearing his producer pants more lately, with his company Overbrook Films. They’re currently producing the reboot of The Karate Kid, starring Smith’s son, Jaden.

With the deadline for casting coming up for both films pretty soon, Smith will inevitably have to make his decision, which could mean we won’t see a third Men In Black film for quite some time.
