The Future is Here, Again, As ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’ Comes to Blu-Ray

by Matt Raub, Sep 29 2011 // 7:00 AM

We may have the entirety of the original Star Trek series on Blu-Ray and in HD online, but for the first time ever, we’re getting Pricard and his entire crew in glorious 1080p with the release of Star Trek: The Next Generation – The Next Level on Blu-Ray for the very first time.

It may not be the entire series, but it’s certainly a start to hold us over until it gets a full release next year. What exactly took so long? Well apparently the folks who boldly brought us where no man has been before, they didn’t think to preserve the original footage on film. Here are the details from the press release:

Transferring STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION® to high-definition presented numerous challenges – The series was originally shot on film and then transferred to videotape, which was used to edit episodes together.

In order to create true HD masters, CBS is going back to the original uncut film negative – all 25,000 plus film reels of it – and cutting the episodes together exactly the way they originally aired. The visual effects were all shot on film and will be painstakingly recompositioned, not upconverted from videotape.

Details Announced for ‘Green Lantern’ Blu-Ray Release

by Matt Raub, Aug 31 2011 // 8:00 AM

For those who weren’t completely burned out on this year’s cornocopia of big-budget super hero flicks, you may have truly enjoyed Warner’s shot at an intergalactic actioner in Green Lantern.

There were some mixed emotions about the flick, but overall it was a solid adaptation of the timeless comic protagonist, and only boosted the credibility of rising actors like Ryan Reynolds and Peter Sarsgaard.

For those who missed the movie, you’ll get to experience the whole thing for the first time on Blu-Ray in both an extended cut and its original theatrical cut. Here’s the lowdown.

“Green Lantern” will be available on Blu-ray 3D Combo Pack, featuring a 3D hi-definition, a hi-definition, a standard definition and a digital copy of the theatrical film, for $40.99, Blu-ray Combo Pack, featuring a hi-definition, a standard definition and a digital copy of the theatrical film, for $35.99 and on single disc DVD for $28.98.   The extended cut will be in hi-definition on the Blu-ray 3D Combo Pack and Blu-ray Combo Pack only.

Not only will the film be released on Blu-Ray and standard DVD, but the new UltraViolet Digital Copy will be included in the release. Check out details of what’s on the discs after the jump and catch the release on October 14th.

SDCC11: The ‘Star Wars’ Saga Deleted Scenes Trailer

by Nat Almirall, Jul 22 2011 // 10:00 AM

With the Blu-Ray release of the Star Wars saga coming this September, 20th Century Fox is titillating fans with a sneak peek at some of the extras, including this trailer of some footage cut from the original trilogy.

The clip shows a handful of glimpses at some deleted scenes, including the “wampas in the Hoth base” sequence. These aren’t from the digitally remastered/Greedo-shoots-first editions released in the late ‘90s; these are from the original original films, right down to the ‘70s film grain—and that’s not to say they look fuzzy. They’re as crisp and good-looking as you could want.

Fox plans to release Blu-Ray editions of both the original trilogy as well as the prequels and, for the fans who need every damn thing, a whopping nine-disc Complete Saga edition that will include over 30 hours of special features from deleted and alternative scenes like these to, well, pretty much anything else George has lying around in the archives.

You can view the trailer after the jump.

‘X-Men: First Class’ Hitting Blu-ray In September

by Joe Gillis, Jul 19 2011 // 3:40 PM

As a fan of all-things X-Men I was slightly worried about a movie featuring the origin of the group and the lives of the young and future X-Men. Turns out I really had nothing to worry about because X-Men: First Class was awesome and director Matthew Vaughn did a bang up job.

Netflix To Change Pricing Plans, Offer More Options

by Sebastian Suchecki, Jul 13 2011 // 8:00 AM

Now that just about every new device, be it a TV, computer, game console, or Blu-Ray player, comes with Instant Netflix programmed into the device itself, the rules have to change to accommodate just about everyone on the planet watching Netflix either through streaming or the original DVD plan. That means the company is making changes in the way you use the service, and exactly how much you spend monthly.

Now, instead of having that fancy DVD and streaming plan together, the company is making you choose or pay for both at double the price. Here’s the breakdown from the horse’s mouth.

First, we are launching new DVD only plans. These plans offer our lowest prices ever for unlimited DVDs – only $7.99 a month for our 1 DVD out at-a-time plan and $11.99 a month for our 2 DVDs out at-a-time plan. By offering our lowest prices ever, we hope to provide great value to our current and future DVDs by mail members. New members can sign up for these plans by going to DVD.netflix.com.

Second, we are separating unlimited DVDs by mail and unlimited streaming into separate plans to better reflect the costs of each and to give our members a choice: a streaming only plan, a DVD only plan or the option to subscribe to both. With this change, we will no longer offer a plan that includes both unlimited streaming and DVDs by mail.

So if you have the current $9.99 unlimited streaming/DVD plan, you’ll have to pick between paying for JUST unlimited DVD’s at $7.99 or unlimited streaming for $7.99. Or both if you’re so ambitious. Unfortunate, but it was bound to happen with this service becoming more and more popular.

‘Lord of the Rings’ Extended Edition Trilogy Now Available for Download

by Joe Gillis, Jun 30 2011 // 1:24 PM

That’s right folks. If you don’t currently own a Blu-ray player but have an iTunes account, an XBox Live account or have a PS3 but don’t want to buy physical media, you can still own The Lord of the Rings Extended Edition Trilogy in HD.

Starting today, all three films are available via iTunes, XBox Live and on the Playstation Network. These are not the original versions of the films, however, these are the extended editions which contain lots more footage for you to enjoy.

As a huge fan of these films I was pretty impressed with the extended editions. Of course, I don’t mind having the Blu-ray versions because I like the way that 1080p picture looks plus all the extras are pretty cool too. However, if you just want the movies, a download may be the perfect way to go.

As an added bonus, we’ve got a scene from the extended edition of the trilogy never seen in theaters. Check it out after the jump.

‘Boyz N The Hood’ Coming to Blu-ray In July

by Joe Gillis, Jun 30 2011 // 11:00 AM

Hard to believe it took this long as it seems most every movie arrives on Blu-ray quickly these days but director John Singleton’s Boyz N The Hood is finally getting the HD treatment. It will be released on July 19th by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

for those of you not familiar with the film (although, not sure how that’s possible), Boyz N The Hood is “the critically acclaimed story of three friends growing up in a South Central Los Angeles neighborhood, and of street life where friendship, pain, danger and love combine to form reality.”

It also features some career-launching performances by Cuba Gooding, Jr., Ice Cube and Morris Chestnut as well as great turns by Lawrence Fishburne and Angela Bassett. The Blu-ray will include a host of special features such as Director’s Commentary, Deleted Scenes, Audition Videos featuring Ice Cube, Angela Bassett and Morris Chestnut.

In addition, the Blu-ray will also include the documentaries “The Enduring Significance of Boyz N the Hood,” “Friendly Fire: Making Of An Urban Legend” and the music video from Compton’s Most Wanted called “Growin’ Up in the Hood.”

This movie spawned the careers of many actors and helped propel Singleton into the top echelon of directors. Sadly, he hasn’t done as well with his career as some of his actors. Who knows, perhaps he and Cuba Gooding, Jr. will get together and make another movie? It might help both of their careers.

Check Out An Action-Packed Clip From The New ‘TEKKEN’ Movie

by Sebastian Suchecki, Jun 15 2011 // 11:00 AM

Video game movies get a bad rap. One one hand, you have films like the Resident Evil series, which managed to skyrocket the video game franchise into a whole new world, and on the other hand you have Super Mario Bros. starring Bob Hoskins and Dennis Hopper. A mixed pot, really.

The former is exactly what the upcoming live-action TEKKEN looks like it may just be. Based on the popular gaming franchise for the PlayStation, this film is set to be a main competitor to any upcoming Mortal Kombat reboots Hollywood has planned. Here’s the premise.

The year is 2039. World wars have destroyed everything and territories are run by corporations, the mightiest — and cruelest — of which is Tekken. Jin Kazama (John Foo) witnesses the death of his mother Jun (Tomita) by Tekken in the slums known as Anvil. Vowing vengeance, and armed only with his street smarts and raw fighting skills, he enters a dangerous and potentially deadly combat tournament, where he must defeat the world’s most elite fighters to become the “King of the Iron Fist.”

With some pretty legitimate martial arts stars and professional fighters, this film looks like it may just be the real thing. We’ve got an exclusive clip from the movie for you to check out and see for yourself after the jump. Catch TEKKEN on DVD and Blu-Ray July 19th.

DVD Review: ‘The Company Men’ Blu-Ray

by Eric Medina, May 23 2011 // 12:15 PM

The Company Men is a corporate drama by first time writer, producer, and director John Wells that first premiered at Sundance in 2010.  Starring Ben Affleck (The Town, Good Will Hunting), Tommy Lee Jones (Men in Black, No Country for Old Men), and Chris Cooper (American Beauty, Adaptation), this film obviously has a strong cast of seasoned actors that together couldn’t make a bad film if they tried.  With it’s high production value, timely script, and strong cast, the question isn’t whether this is bad film, but rather if it is as relatable or socially relevant as the filmmakers want it to be.

Personally, this film is just not my usual genre.  I understand that there definitely could be a sizable market for this film, but what some people might find to be a relevant story about the hardships of today’s economy, I find to be lacking in realism and slightly melodramatic.  It is one of those films where every few lines the audience is suppose to be nodding in agreement thinking, “Yes, I feel your pain.”  Don’t get me wrong, I completely understand the need for films to comment on the troubles of society, but this just seemed forced and exaggerated.

The film is about the effects of corporate downsizing, how it ultimately effects people the same way regardless of job title or salary, and what is really important to treasure in your life.  Affleck plays Bobby Walker, a white-colar corporate employee who gets laid off in the first round of downsizing at corporate giant GTX.

Roger Corman’s Classic Sci-Fi ‘Battle Beyond the Stars’ Coming to 30th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray and DVD

by Chris Ullrich, May 6 2011 // 11:30 AM

What makes a movie a classic? Is it some kind of social significance? Or, is it what the movie meant to people when it first came out? Or maybe its just fondly remembered for its amazing cheesiness and being so bad its good? I’m pretty sure Roger Corman’s Battle Beyond the Stars falls into that last category.

However, even if it happens to be made of 100% real cheese, that doesn’t stop it from also begin pretty awesome and, shall we say it, a classic. Now this film is getting the Blu-ray and DVD treatment it deserves with a super special 30th anniversary edition, soon to be released by Shout! Factory.

To begin to understand the scope of this film’s cult classic status, you have to take a look at the people involved in it. They represent some of the biggest names working in movies today. Back then, they were just a bunch of kids with an idea for a space movie.

Here’s a small list of those involved. See if you recognize any of the names: John Sayles, Richard Thomas, Robert Vaughn, George Peppard, John Saxon, James Horner, Gale Anne Hurd and, of course, Roger Corman. Oh yeah, James cameron also did the special effects for the movie. He’s come a long way since then.

Click throuhg for the full info from Shout! Factory. Look for Battle Beyond the Stars in stores on June 12th. Also after the break we’ve included the original trailer for the film as well. It’s not great quality but watch it and you’ll see exactly what I’m talking about.

‘Star Wars’ Saga Full Blu-Ray Details Revealed

by Chris Ullrich, May 5 2011 // 2:15 PM

In case you missed it, yesterday was International Star Wars Day. To commemorate the event or, in some cases, dash the hopes of nerds everywhere, Lucasfilm took the opportunity to announce the full details of the Strar Wars Saga’s impending release on Blu-ray.

Before you bother to read on hoping for some good news, I will save you the suspense. The original, unmodified original trilogy will NOT be in this collection.

Yes, that’s right, if we want to watch Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi in their original, non-Lucas tinkered with versions, we will just have to keep watching those “Definitive Collection” THX Laserdiscs. I’ve got mine, how about you?

However, if you don’t care about how things should be and, instead, want to keep rewarding George Lucas with money for fucking up his own movies, feel free to read on and get all the details.

The six films of the Saga are accompanied by three discs of extras totaling over 40 hours of material – some new, some old. Here’s the full press release from Lucasfilm.
