Box Office: 3D Horror Still A Hit?

by Matt Raub, Aug 31 2009 // 9:30 AM

OvalCrash2There was a period in time when 3D horror was thought of as a failed gimmick to get butts into theater seats. Using cheap stereoscopic (blue-and-red) technology to make films like 1982’s Parasite or even as far back as the original House of Wax, the concept got people into theaters, but the initial excitement of it eventually wore off in the 50’s, then again in the 80’s.

It seems like the trend has come back once again, as The Final Destination in digital 3D popped up in the top of the box office this weekend, grossing roughly $28 million over the three days. This was bad news for Halloween II, the opposing horror film that opened this weekend, as it only grossed $17 million.

Though Halloween II, Rob Zombie’s sequel to his 2007 reboot, only came in at #3 on the chart, it still grossed $2 million more than their production budget on the film. Final Destination, however, made back nearly half of their budget of $40 million.

Rob Zombie to Remake ‘The Blob’

by Matt Raub, Aug 28 2009 // 12:30 PM

rob-zombieWe got the chance to talk to Rob Zombie about his release of Halloween 2 this week, and though he stated that he has no intention of remaking any other horror movies, it looks like Genre Co.’s Richard Sapperstein may have made his mind up for him.

According to Variety, Genre Co., which is founded by former Dimension Pictures President Sapperstein, will be producing a remake of the 1958 classic The Blob along with the original producers at Worldwide Entertainment Corp. According to Zombie, this is something new for him, and he’s ready to take a crack at it.

“I’d been looking to break out of the horror genre, and this really is a science fiction movie about a thing from outer space,” Zombie said. “I intend to make it scary, and the great thing is I have the freedom once again to take it in any crazy direction I want to.”

Zombie has begun writing. He’ll follow the release of “Halloween II” with a new album and tour this fall and get the script done at that time.

Review: ‘Halloween 2′

by Chris Ullrich, Aug 28 2009 // 10:15 AM

h2-family

Rob Zombie’s Halloween 2 doesn’t live up to the promise of his first effort and is only marginally entertaining for its running time. The film, which begins about a minute after the last one ends, continues the tale of Laurie Strode (Scout Taylor-Compton) and her descent into madness. During the film she’s also pursued by Michael Myers, a sinister and relentless killing machine who even thought he’s on a mission to find Laurie and do whatever it is sociopaths do with people they find instead of killing them, he manages to stop along the way and kill many people seemingly at random or just because they happen to be in his way.

There are some things to like about this sequel. First, Zombie manages to up the tension and the stakes a bit from the first one — its now even more about saving Laurie — plus he throws in a pretty effective misdirection at the beginning of the film that leads us to believe we’re going to be watching a very faithful remake of the original Halloween sequel. Fortunately, he’s able to get away from that concept pretty gracefully and ends up taking the film into another less familiar, but in the end no less predictable, direction.

Exclusive Interview: Rob Zombie

by Matt Raub, Aug 27 2009 // 9:15 AM

Picture 1We’ve been pulling out all the stops this week with coverage of Halloween 2. Yesterday we posted a few clips, Tuesday we had an exclusive chat with H2 co-star Sheri Moon Zombie, and we’ll even be bringing you a review of the film on Friday as well. We now bring you another treat: our exclusive interview with one of the masters of modern horror, and Halloween 2 writer/director, Rob Zombie.

Halloween 2 is Zombie’s fourth directorial effort, or his fifth if you count Werewolf Women of the S.S., since his debut with House of 1000 Corpses back in 2003. There are a few similar players that Zombie brought with him from House for the Halloween movies including his wife Sheri and Chris Hardwick.

We got the chance to talk to Rob about the rumored 4-hour first cut of H2, his work on the animated Haunted World of El Suberbeasto, and even his plans with the Danny Trejo project Tyrannosaurus Rex. Check out the interview after the jump. Special thanks to Midtown Comics in Manhattan for the location.

Halloween 2 hits theaters tonight at midnight.

Exclusive: Three New ‘Halloween 2′ Clips

by Matt Raub, Aug 26 2009 // 11:30 AM

halloween2_myersThis week, we are on full alert for all things Halloween 2. Yesterday, we hit you with an exclusive interview with the films co-star Sheri Moon Zombie, and today, we’re bringing you even more Michael Myers goodness. After the jump, you can check out three brand new exclusive clips from Rob Zombie’s latest film, featuring the jumpsuit-donning madman himself.

The first clip, which is from the first half of the film, shows Myers in action as he lures two unsuspecting victims into a trap. The second scene is the first we see of Sheri Moon’s character, Deborah Myers, in the sequel. Brace yourselves for this one because she’s a ghost, wearing white, leading a white stallion.

Finally, the third scene is a dream sequence, also starring Sheri. This one gets a little bizarre as well, so be sure to pay close attention to the nuances. Check out the three clips after the jump, and keep it here for all things Halloween 2 this week including our exclusive interview with Rob Zombie and our review of the film itself.

Rob Zombie’s Halloween 2 hits theaters this Friday.

Exclusive Interview: Sheri Moon Zombie

by Matt Raub, Aug 25 2009 // 3:30 PM

Pacific's Gaslamp 15 TheaterSheri Moon Zombie is a name that, in the past few years, has become quite prominent in the world of horror. She got her start back in 2003’s House of 1000 Corpses and worked her way up from there, all alongside her husband Rob Zombie. We recently got a chance to talk to Sheri about the upcoming Halloween 2 release, and how her character makes an interesting return.

Those who remember Zombie’s first Halloween know that Deborah Myers, Sheri’s character, offed herself in the second act. It seems like her role only got bigger after death, as she’s pretty consistent throughout the newest film. In the interview, Sheri spills on H2, working with Rob, her role as Suzi X in the animated The Haunted World of El Superbeasto, and even the work she did on Showtime’s Californication.

Check out our exclusive interview after the jump, and a special thanks to Midtown Comics in Manhattan for letting us shoot there! Also, be sure to check back all this week for more coverage of Rob Zombie’s Halloween 2.

‘Halloween 2′ Launches Twitter Contest

by Joe Gillis, Jul 10 2009 // 7:30 AM

halloween-2-posterDo you love Twitter? Do you actually know what Twitter is? Are you a fan of movies like Halloween 2 (aka H2)? If you answered “yes” to these questions, then this announcement is for you.

Today, promotion for Rob Zombie’s upcoming Halloween 2 has reached a new level and they’ve started a contest on Twitter. What do you have to do to win? The first 50 people to send in a photo of themselves in front of a Halloween 2 poster or standee at a local theater will win a poster.

Just @ the picture to the official Halloween 2 Twitter account H2_TheMovie and name the theater, city and state where you took the photo. If you win, you not only get the poster but your photo will be uploaded onto the Halloween 2 Facebook fan page as well.

But hurry, they’ve started and people are already winning so don’t delay if you want a cool poster and some free publicity on Facebook. Come on, who doesn’t want that?

Halloween 2 hits theaters everywhere on August 28th.

New Full Trailer for Rob Zombie’s ‘Halloween 2′

by Chris Ullrich, Jun 22 2009 // 2:30 PM

h2_badassNormally, we would try to make some comment about a new movie trailer or provide some context so you know what you’re seeing. We would also probably tell you a bit about the film, its story and the characters. Fortunately, with this new trailer from Rob Zombie’s sequel to his reboot of Halloween, context and commentary really isn’t all that necessary.

If you’re a horror fan and you’re reading this, you’ve probably already seen John Carpenter’s original Halloween and Zombie’s reboot. In fact, you probably have seen all the Halloween movies, and most other horror films, so you pretty much know what you’re getting with this movie. Fortunately, you’re suspicions are proven true in this new trailer.

It features all the thrills, chases, screaming, blood, gore and the unstoppable killing machine (aka Michael Myers) you’d expect from a Halloween movie. In short, it looks kick ass.

Halloween 2 opens August 28th. Check out the new trailer after the jump.

Two New ‘Halloween 2′ TV Spots Hit the ‘Net

by Joe Gillis, Jun 15 2009 // 10:35 AM

halloween-2-new-teaserLast week on The Flickcast, our own Chris Ullrich chose Rob Zombie’s Halloween reboot as his pick of the week. He was impressed with the film and found it to be much better than he expected. Obviously, he’s a fan.

Well, he’s in luck then, as are the rest of you who are fans of Rob Zombie and Halloween, because Zombie is hard at work on a sequel, currently entitled Halloween 2. And now, courtesy of the folks over at Club Scout and a rather shaky person with a camcorder aimed at their tv screen, we’ve got two new video clips of Halloween 2 tv spots to share with you.

These two video clips show Zombie’s vision at work bringing new dimensions to the horror that is Michael Myers. Expect more of the same: Michael Myers chasing people, killing people, people trying to kill him and various other scenes of that nature. Plus, Myers appears to roll over a car by himself and sent it down an embankment. Great stuff.

Sadly, because of how they were taken, the videos are not of great quality. But still, I’m sure you get the idea. Halloween 2 hits theaters August 28th.

Check out the videos after the Jump.

First Clip from Rob Zombie’s ‘Halloween 2′ Online

by Joe Gillis, May 25 2009 // 4:00 PM

halloween2_myersEven with the holiday weekend there’s always time for a little Rob Zombie news. Even though I’m a much bigger fan of his music than his films he still manages to bring something relatively interesting and often unique to the table whenever he sits in the director’s chair.

This time around he’s returning to Halloween territory and working on a sequel to his own Halloween reboot from last year. And now, courtesy of MTV, we can bring you the first clip from Zombie’s sequel , which hits theaters on August 28th.

The clip isn’t particularly long or, for that matter, particularly exciting. That said, it is nice to see Michael Myers (played by Tyler Mane in the film) back where he belongs and doing what he does best.
