Toy Fair 2010: New Movie Toys

by Matt Raub, Feb 17 2010 // 10:00 AM

This week in New York City, the annual Toy Fair convention hits the Jacob Javits Center and thousands of new and popular toys and toy properties are shown off. There were, of course, some less-than-interesting booths, but we know what you want to see, so we went straight to the newest lines of toys and statues based on some of the upcoming movie and TV properties.

Obviously, Toy Story 3 had a huge presence at the show, given the fact that it’s the best hybrid of toys and film out there today. Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland had some great new figures of the whacked out Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter. LEGO stepped up their game with some brand new LEGO Star Wars playsets, including a great “Luke on Hoth” scene.

Diamond was also in attendence with some great new Ghostbusters products, including a new Ghostbusters replica sign for those hardcore fans. Finally, there were some great new 12-inch figures for the upcoming Jonah Hex film, including our first look at John Malkovich from the film.

Check out our Movie Toys picture gallery from the show after the jump, and be sure to check back in tomorrow to see what else we’ve got to show you from this year’s Toy Fair.

More Details On Josh Brolin Joining ‘Men In Black 3′

by John Muth, Dec 14 2009 // 9:00 AM

josh-brolinAccording to the L.A. Times, in Men in Black 3 Josh Brolin’s role has been more clearly defined as a young K (Tommy Lee Jones in the previous two films), who J (Will Smith) will somehow travel back in time to meet. Yeah, that’s pretty much all the news there is to report at the moment, other than the script is being worked on by Etan Cohen (Tropic Thunder and Idiocracy), pretty much everyone else rumored to return, Barry Sonnenfeld possibly directing, Jones and Smith, in their respective roles, and hopefully Tony Shalhoub.

I can always stand to see his character get his head blown off a couple more times. As the article also mentions, another hurdle the movie faces – other than the whole time-traveling bit – is scheduling.

We know that Jonah Hex has had some reshoots, Brolin’s scheduled for a number of other movies (including The Coen Bros. remake of True Grit), so what that does for the scheduled shooting of MIB3 sometime in 2010 is anyone’s guess. However, it is Josh Brolin, and whether it’s this or the number of other movies he has coming out, the consensus is that we’re all just excited to see him in more genre fare.

Michael Fassbender Discusses Inspiration for ‘Jonah Hex’ Henchman

by Jennifer Tomooka, Aug 11 2009 // 10:00 AM

For actor Michael Fassbender, getting into distinct characters is another day at the office. Over the last two years, he has transformed himself into a Spartan warrior, an emaciated hunger striker and a dashing English military man. For the upcoming DC Comics adaptation of Jonah Hex, Fassbender donned facial tattoos to play the charismatic henchman Burke, and the actor told Sci Fi Wire it was the costume that helped him get into character the most.

“Burke on the page was a certain sort of character, but then when I arrived in New Orleans and met up with Michael Wilkinson and Christien Tinsley, who did the tattoo, they really gave me all of the information I needed,” says Fassbender. “I put on this three-piece suit, and then I was going through hats, and I just put on a bowler hat, and I was like, that reminds me of Clockwork Orange, and that reminds me of Frank Gorshin’s Riddler. So that would be my physicality—I wanted to try and make him quite angular and quite rakish, and I definitely got the inspiration through the hat. So I found it all in that bowler hat, to be honest.”

According to Fassbender, his primary purpose in the film is to offset the intensity of John Malkovich, who plays Turnbull, a calm and menacing character and Jonah’s main adversary.

“I knew that [Jimmy] wanted quite a sort of boisterous, colorful character to go against John Malkovich’s,” he said. “Something that was sort of off the wall. So that’s sort of why I thought of the Riddler in the 1970s, and then there’s also something very sinister and dangerous about the Clockwork Orange element. So I just sort of mashed them together.”

The New ‘Jonah Hex’ and ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’ Posters

by Chris Ullrich, Jul 29 2009 // 7:00 AM

Jonah_hex_poster_comicEven though Warner Bros. dropped these brand new posters during Comic-Con a day or so ago, that doesn’t mean everyone has seen them yet. Plus, they’re both pretty cool. So, for those of you who haven’t had a look, we’ve got the posters for both Jonah Hex, featuring Josh Brolin and Megan Fox, and the reboot of A Nightmare on Elm Street, featuring a somewhat obscured shot of Jackie Earle Haily as Freddy Kruger.

Of the two, I find the Jonah Hex poster to be the more interesting — at least in terms of the way its designed and who it features. Obviously, if the movie is called Jonah Hex you need to show that character and the actor who portrays him on the poster. That’s pretty much a no-brainer. What’s funny is that the poster also features Megan Fox prominently and lists her above the title right next to Josh Brolin.

Why do I find this unusual? Well, according to Fox herself, she plays a minor role in the film — that of a world-weary prostitute — and isn’t really all that important to the story. So why is she featured so prominently on the poster? Well, as you’ve probably figured out already, she’s kinda a big name at the moment and Warner Bros. obviously wants to capitalize on her fame as much as possible. Makes sense, especially as Jonah Hex might be a somewhat difficult sell to a middle America who may or may not have ever heard of the comic on which its based. Seems like a smart decision by the Warner PR department to me.

Jonah Hex hits theaters on June 18, 2010 and A Nightmare on Elm Street arrives on April 30, 2010  . Check out larger versions of the posters after the jump.

Megan Fox Talks ‘Jonah Hex’

by Chris Ullrich, Jun 10 2009 // 3:59 PM

megan-fox-purpleBecause its probably been at least a few hours since we had something here about Megan Fox and we know you’re starting to get a bit of withdrawl, we’re going to help you out. This time around, via our pals at MTV Splashpage, we’ve got info about her role in the upcoming big screen adaptation of Jonah Hex.

Previously, we featured pics of the lovely Ms. Fox on the set of the film, but her actual character was still a bit of a mystery. Now, that mystery appears solved — by Fox herself in the interview. According to the actress:

“That movie is gonna be amazing. It’s a post-civil war, apocalyptic type Western. The director Jimmy [Hayward] is a lunatic, and he might be a genius. From some of the things I’ve seen him shoot, it’s a badass movie.” And what about her character?

“They’ve changed her name a couple of times — it’s Leila now,” Fox explained in the article. “She is a prostitute. She’s a good ol’ working girl, and she’s a love-interest to Jonah… of sorts. I mean, it’s by no means a classic type of relationship.”

“All the women in the movie are prostitutes,” she continued. “[I’m] sort of a tough, no-nonsense prostitute. Like, she’ll shoot you in the head if she has to. And she does!”

Will she actually be shooting people or was that just a figure of speech? According to Fox, she will definitely be handling some firearms in the movie and will get to shoot at least one person. “Not in the head,” she grinned. “[But I get to shoot someone] somewhere.”

Jonah Hex, which co-stars Josh Brolin, John Malkovich and Will Arnett, hits theaters everywhere August 6, 2010.

First Pictures of Josh Brolin as ‘Johan Hex’ Drop

by Joe Gillis, Jun 3 2009 // 8:40 AM

josh-brolin-jonah-hex-3-smallWe’ve bought you news of this film previously but before today, we only had photos of Megan Fox in costume and on the set for her as-yet unknown role in the feature film adaptation of DC’s comic Jonah Hex. We knew there were other actors in the film, of course, including Josh Brolin as the title character. But until now, there were no pictures of him available playing the character or others from the set.

Fortunately, when crawling the Internets late at night as I often do, I came across these three pretty cool images from Lainey Gossip (don’t judge) featuring Brolin in full costume and make-up for his role as the ex-confederate bounty hunter who lets his pistols do the talking and racks up a high body count in the process. Now that Brolin’s character is out of the bag, hopefully it won’t be too long before we get some pics of some of the other actors in the film including Michael Shannon, Will Arnett and John Malkovich.

Jonah Hex rides into theaters, guns blazing, on August 10. Be sure to check out the full photos after the break.
