Will Smith and Son Jaden Join M. Night Shyamalan’s New Sci-Fi Epic

by Jonathan Weilbaecher, Apr 5 2011 // 7:00 AM

Will Smith is a movie star in the truest sence of the word. His charm and charisma are palpable in just about everything he does. Even the horrible films in his filmography have the faintest amount of watch-ability due to Smith. That track record is about to be put to the ultimate test.

Deadline is reporting that Will Smith and his son Jaden have signed on to star in M. Night Shyamalan’s currently untitled sci-fi epic. Here’s the scoop:

The story takes place far in the future where a young boy has to navigate an abandoned planet on a space ship that has crashed. On board is his estranged father.

Check Out The Trailer For M. Night Shyamalan’s ‘Devil’

by Matt Raub, Jul 14 2010 // 1:00 PM

While M. Night Shyamalan is getting bashed for his work on The Last Airbender, he’s actually staying pretty close to his roots with another project called The Night Chronicles, a series of films that he helped get started, and a few that he even created, while also letting other filmmakers have a crack at it.

The first in the lineup is Devil, which is about a group of strangers that get stuck in an elevator and one of them “is not what they seem.” Sure, the film is a little bit like a Tales From the Crypt episode, but that’s not a problem since there hasn’t really been a good horror anthology in a long time.

Devil is filled with relative unknowns, with a few C-listers. Geoffrey Arend may be the most recognizable face, and you may know him best as Christina Hendrick’s husband. Also along for the ride are Chris Messina, Caroline Dhavernas, and Bokeem Woodbine.

Directed by the team that brought you Quarantine, you can expect to see plenty of technology-based scares in the film, and the trailer does it some justice.

Check it out after the jump. Catch M. Night Shyamalan’s Devil in theaters on September 17th.

Geeky Girl’s Guide to Summer Movies: Part 3: The Never-Ending Assault of the Ads

by Diane Panosian, Jul 1 2010 // 1:02 PM

To all who have survived the month of June by successfully traversing lines of blood-sucking twihards, I congratulate you. You can relax now because the steaming month of July is less about men of iron and teenagers who use SPF 60 and more about whiz kids, dreamers, and spies.

Movie studios may appear to be throwing grenades into your trench, but don’t let the eye-catching blue and orange of the movie posters fool you. These grenades are merely filled with smoke and a good amount of marketing slickness. They will explode in your face only when you yank the pin by paying $12. Then, they will have truly won the battle. Instead of succumbing to the propaganda, arm yourselves wisely with the reviews below.

Those in the know will hold their breath until August when the golden generation of action heroes team up to save the world, kick some ass before kicking the bucket, and get sweaty enough to take off their shirts- giving both men and women some very good reasons for sitting in an air-conditioned multiplex.

The Flickcast – Episode 61: Unbreakable

by Joe Gillis, Jun 23 2010 // 12:00 PM

This week Chris and Matt get down to business with all manner of new topics, observations, questions and discussions. Among the items on the agenda this time around are the new Green Hornet trailer, the Dr. Strange movie and who should play the character, a bit more talk about E3, Jason Momoa as Conan, M. Night Shyamalan’s new “secret” movie and a whole lot more.

The boys also made some picks this week including Matt’s pick of the book The Man Who Heard Voices: Or, How M. Night Shyamalan Risked His Career on a Fairy Tale and Chris’ pick of the Brian K. Vaughn comic Dr. Strange: The Oath.

As always, if you have comments, questions, critiques, offers of sponsorship or whatever, feel free to hit us up in the comments, on Twitter, at Facebook and MySpace or via email.

Three Big Names ‘Loosely Attached’ To Mysterious M. Night Shyamalan Film

by Matt Raub, Jun 22 2010 // 9:00 AM

M. Night Shyamalan gets a bad rep sometimes. He’s an excellent storyteller who’s been known to go off of the deep end when it comes to getting his films made, most notably with Lady in the Water, which was basically just a love letter to his kids. We won’t address The Happening.

He seemed to go a bit more mainstream with the upcoming The Last Airbender, but now it seems the writer/director is getting back to his mysterious roots with his newest film. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film’s premise, and even the title, is a mystery. Nothing has been revealed about the plot or the genre. What we do know is that Shyamalan has apparently already locked in three big actors for the film.

No details are known about the project, but it comes with some major acting talent: We’ve learned that Bradley Cooper, Gwyneth Paltrow and Bruce Willis are loosely attached to star in the film.

Shyamalan is famously secretive, and this project is no exception: Only top studio execs have read the script, and they were required to allow a Shyamalan assistant to supervise the process. When the execs finished reading, the assistant took the script back and left.

This project could be just what Night needs to get back to where he was circa 1997 with the success of The Sixth Sense. He’s got a pretty good track record with Willis, as he was in both Sense and Unbreakable.

Not sure where he could possibly go with this film, as he’s already touched on fairy tales, aliens, ghosts, and evil trees. We’ll be sure to keep a close eye on news from this upcoming project.

First Teaser for ‘The Last Airbender’

by Chris Ullrich, Jun 23 2009 // 7:30 AM

last-airbender-moviePremiering on Entertainment Tonight last night was a new teaser for M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender. And now, thanks to the marvels of modern technology (i.e. YouTube) we’ve got the teaser for you right here, just in case you weren’t watching ET. And really, with all the great news and insight here at The Flickcast, why would you be? Don’t answer that. We know you think Mary Hart is hot.

In case you’re not familiar with the movie, The Last Airbender is a live-action film version of Nickelodeon’s animated series of the same name. It follows the adventures of the main protagonist Aang, who is an Avatar, one of the chosen who will lead his people, and his friends. In a world divided into warring tribes, Aang and his friends must save the world by defeating the Fire Lord and ending the destructive war with the Fire Nation.

The original series ran for three seasons on Nickelodeon and spawned several tv movies and three video game tie-ins. In other words, it was pretty popular. Expect The Last Airbender in theaters on July 2, 2010. Check out the teaser, sadly without Mary Hart, after the jump. Also, expect the full trailer for the film to run in front of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen starting this Wednesday.

M. Night Shyamalan Talks ‘Unbreakable 2′

by Chris Ullrich, Jun 17 2009 // 2:40 PM

m-night-shyamalanI feel pretty strongly I’m not the only one who liked M. Night Shyamalan’s Unbreakable. It had a good cast in Samuel L. Jackson and Bruce Willis, an interesting premise, Willis’ character as “superhero” to Jackson’s “super villain” and was well made in most other respects. Since the film came out I’ve always thought it was a great origin story for Willis’ character and secretly, and not so secretly, hoped for a sequel.

Apparently, I’m not the only one interested in an Unbreakable 2 movie. According to our friends over at MTV Splashpage, the writer/director himself is also interested in a sequel to the film. During a recent press event, Shyamalan was asked if he was considering an Unbreakable sequel.

“I am,” revealed Shyamalan. “I don’t know where all the parties are in the world. Sam [Jackson] is like ‘Mr. Comic Book’ now. And Bruce, I don’t know what he’s up to. I don’t know where Disney’s at in their head and what kind of movies they’re up for making. But yeah, I love that movie.”
