Movie Review: ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’

by Nat Almirall, Jun 3 2012 // 12:07 PM

I don’t know what the point of this movie is. at times, it’s great to look at, and has some clever visuals such as dipping Charlize Theron in ivory or having her vanish in a murder of crows…or ravens, which are probably the right birds, seeing as how her name is Ravenna.

She’s the wicked queen who seduces the widower king and kills him on their wedding night and needs to drain the essence of the king’s daughter Snow White (Kristen Stewart) to become immortal. Ravenna tosses Snowy in the clink, but she escapes and retreats into the Dark Forest, the one place where Ravenna’s powers are useless. So Ravenna sends the one guy who’s made it through the Dark Forest before, the titular Huntsman Eric (Chris Hemsworth) to retrieve Snow White. Eric’s hesitant, but Ravenna promises him that if he succeeds, she’ll bring his wife back to life — or kill him if he doesn’t.

Meanwhile one of Snow White’s childhood friends (Sam Claflin) goes undercover as an archer in Ravenna’s Dark Army, headed by her whispy brother Finn (Sam Spruell). They pop up sporadically to menace Snowy and provide plot points, respectively.

New ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ Trailer Continues to Promise an Epic Adventure

by Jonathan Weilbaecher, Mar 19 2012 // 3:15 PM

The current big trend in H-Town is revisiting fairy tales and giving them new spins. People should know better than to complain about this trend, because retooling fairy tales is the basis for most of modern storytelling, so this always seemed like a natural place for Hollywood to go.

Early on, one such project seemed like the worst, pandering tripe imaginable. Snow White and the Huntsman seemed like a hallow, Twilight meets Lord of the Rings mash-up with a recognizable name. Taking all the worst parts if Alice in Wonderland and Red Riding Hood to forge one super stinker of a picture.

Somewhere along the line, the stars converged and this movie actually turned the corner on it’s perception. With each passing trailer the movie looks more and more like an epic adventure worthy of a mass audience.

Now a brand new trailer has hit and it continues the trend of making the movie look better and better. It has scope, it has visual flare, it has Bob Flippin’ Hoskins as one of the seven dwarves! Snow White and the Huntsman might not just be good, it might actually pretty fantastic.

Check out the new trailer after the jump.

‘Girl With the Dragon Tattoo’ Means End For CBS’ New Drama ‘Quean’

by Sebastian Suchecki, Mar 6 2012 // 7:30 AM

It looks like CBS’ drama pilot Quean is over before it began. According to inside sources at Warner Bros TV, which produces the project with Joel Silver’s Silver Pictures, the decision has been made to pull the plug upon the advice of an outside legal firm.

Quean was supposed to be a crime procedural which centers on an edgy and independent hacker girl who teams up with a police detective to solve crimes. The pilot secured Jaume Collet-Serra (House of Wax, Orphan) as director, was written by The L Word creator Ilene Chaiken, and was moving to the casting stage when Warner Bros TV received a letter from Sony Pictures threatening a lawsuit over alleged similarities to The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

Sony Throws Hat In as Yet Another Dracula Film Goes Into Development

by Sebastian Suchecki, Feb 28 2012 // 10:00 AM

It seems the popularity of vampires would be winding down with the over-saturation of the market, but Hollywood is moving away from your modern vampire, as seen in Twilight, True Blood, and The Vampire Diaries, and seems to be looking toward the past to keep the craze going. There has been a sudden explosion of projects based on the classic vampire, Dracula. Names ranging from Adam Sandler to Park Chan-Wook are involved in some kind of story about the classical bloodsucker.

According to Deadline, Sony has purchased a pitch from writer Jason Keller that will tell Dracula’s origin story, with Joe Roth and Palak Patel set to produce. Sony would only admit that they intend to start a period franchise, and with Keller credited for the upcoming Snow White re-imagining Mirror Mirror, that might put two franchises on his plate.

New ‘Mirror Mirror’ Trailer Debuts

by Chris Ullrich, Nov 16 2011 // 7:30 AM

The Snow White movie wars are heating up folks. Last week we got a look at Universal’s Snow White and The Huntsman directed by Rupert Sanders and starring Kristen Stewart.

Now, we’ve got the trailer for director Tarsem’s take on the story called Mirror Mirror. This one features a cast that includes Julia Roberts, Lily Collins, Armie Hammer and Sean Bean.

One thing you can say about Tarsem’s films is that they are stylish and his visuals are often stunning. Plus, he knows his way around an action sequence.

In truth, I was not a fan of his first film, The Cell. That said, his most recent project, Immortals, is quite good so I have a bit of hope for this one.

Plus, this is also the Snow White film that doesn’t feature Kristen Stewart, which is a big plus in my book. Look for Mirror Mirror to arrive in theaters on March 16.

Check out the trailer after the break.

First Images From Relativity’s Untitled ‘Snow White Project’ Surface

by Matt Raub, Oct 10 2011 // 10:00 AM

Fairy tales are all the rage these days. Between two brand new series starting on both ABC and NBC later this month about mystical worlds, and the ever-growing popularity of vampires and zombies, people are loving fantasy lately.

Which makes sense why two studios are racing to the finish line with exciting new projects involving the Snow White universe. Twilight star Kristen Stewart is making some moves over at Universal with Snow White and the Huntsman, while Relativity Media is now pushing some new images of their untitled Snow White Film.

For those who still need help differentiating the two projects, here’s Relativity’s breakdown of their film.

Visionary director Tarsem Singh (Immortals) rewrites fairy tale history as a wicked enchantress (Julia Roberts) schemes and scrambles for control of a spirited orphan’s (Lily Collins) throne and the attention of a charming prince (Armie Hammer). When Snow White’s beauty wins the heart of the prince that she desperately pursues, the Queen banishes her to the forest, where a ravening man-eating beast hungrily awaits.

Rescued by a band of diminutive highway robbers, Snow White grows into an indomitable young woman determined to take back her realm from the treacherous Queen. With the support of her subjects, she roars into action in an epic battle that blends spectacle, magic and contemporary humor in Singh’s signature, jaw-dropping visual style.

We’ve got a whole slew of new images for you to check out after the jump, which will have to hold you over while Relativity decides on a release date (and a title) for the film.

SDCC11: First Promo Images from ‘The Huntsman’ Arrive

by Heather Toshiko, Jul 24 2011 // 10:22 AM

Right after the presentation late yesterday at Comic-Con in San Diego, Universal Pictures released the first promo images for their upcoming re-imagining of the Snow White story called The Huntsman. And to be honest, they look pretty cool.

In this images we get our first look at Kristen Stewart as Snow White, Charlize Theron as the Queen, Chris Hemsworth as the Huntsman and Sam Claflin as the Prince. The film also features Ian McShane, Eddie Izzard, Bob Hoskins, Toby Jones, Eddie Marsan, Steven Graham and Nick Frost.

Sadly, no pics of any of them just yet. Got to get the big characters and big actor names out in front first, apparently. According to reports from the panel, the proof of concept footage from the film looked pretty good too so if these images and that fact give us a bit of hope that the tend will continue and this movie will end up finishing the sam way.

The Hunstman opens on June 1, 2012. Click through to see all the rest of the images.

Sean Bean Keeping His Crown As King in ‘Snow White’

by Matt Raub, Jul 18 2011 // 11:00 AM

Sean Bean is an incredible talent. Not just because the man has been working for over 25 years in nearly 100 projects, but because he knows a good thing when he’s hit it. In the past decade, since his role as Boromir in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, Bean has managed to make a name for himself in the fantasy realm.

From Red Riding: In the Year of our Lord to Black Death and most recently Game of Thrones, the man knows he looks good wearing armor and weilding a sword, so why fix something that isn’t broken? It turns out he’s keeping with that motto as he’ll be portraying the king in Relativity Media’s upcoming Snow White film.

From Variety:

Bean will soon close a deal to play Snow White’s father, whose kingdom is destroyed by Roberts’ evil Queen.

Lily Collins stars as Snow White, while Julia Roberts and Armie Hammer co-star as her wicked stepmother and princely love interest, respectively.

Relativity Media Announces New Slate, Release Dates for ‘Snow White’, ‘Hunter Killer’ and More

by Joe Gillis, May 24 2011 // 2:51 PM

In the war between Universal and Relativity Media for Snow White dominance, it looks like Relativity has made the latest advance. The company has pushed up its untitled Snow White project to March 16, 2012, from June 29. This comes days after Universal moved Snow White and the Huntsman up six months to June 1.

Relativity’s version has Julia Roberts, Lily Collins and Armie Hammer and is directed by Tarsem Singh. Universal’s has Rupert Sanders directing Charlize Theron, Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth. With all the shuffling around you have to wonder if both of these movies will make it to the big screen. With all the jockying for position it would appear boith companies are serious about their projects. So, expect to see both of these see the light of day — ready or not.

This is just one of three pictures that Relativity has dated in moves that seem to be geared directly toward this competition against Universal. The company also announced it has moved its adaptation of the Nicholas Sparks romance novel Safe Haven to be released on June 1, 2012 and selected a Dec. 21, 2012 release date for the Phillip Noyce thriller Hunter Killer.

Check out the full release from Relativity after the jump. This reminds me of the time there were competing movies that featured a comet and or/asteroid about to destroy the earth.

You remember how that turned out? No, neither do we. But it probably wasn’t all that great – especially when movies are rushed into production just to meet a release data. That always works out well.
