The Flickcast – Episode 40: The Golden Compass Globes

by Joe Gillis, Jan 20 2010 // 5:41 PM

Golden Globe Awards - ArrivalsThis week on The Flickcast, Matt and Chris fly solo as they take on Sunday’s Golden Globes. Some surprises, some reliefs, and Matt talks Christina Hendricks while Chris talks Mo’Nique. They also discuss some other stories making waves including Apple’s announcement next week, and what that could mean for users of the iPhone, as well as Marc Webb getting to take on the reboot of Spider-Man.

Since it was just the two of them this week, Chris and Matt both got cocky and opted for two picks. Matt went with The Adventures of Power, an indie comedy starring Ari Gold (not Jeremy Piven) and the silver screen adaptation of Tucker Max’s I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell, which hits DVD on January 26th. Chris also had two picks, as he went with Paul Thoman Anderson’s Magnolia on Blu-ray, which we’ll have a review of next week, and Whiteout starring Kate Beckinsale.

Sorry for the tardiness of the episode, but due to how much Matt and Chris gushed about the Golden Globes, we think it’s well worth the wait. As usual, if you have any comments, questions, critiques or offers of sponsorship, feel free to hit us up in the comments, on Twitter and at Facebook, MySpace or via email.

First Teaser for ‘Season of the Witch’

by Sebastian Suchecki, Oct 23 2009 // 11:15 AM

season-of-the-witchHalloween is officially 8 days away (7 if you celebrate on the 30th), so it would make sense for a studio like Lionsgate to put out lots of genre films to coincide with the spookiest of holidays, right? Wrong, because according to them, March is the new Halloween. Whatever that means.

There is a brand new teaser out for Season of the Witch, starring Ron Perlman, Stephen Campbell Moore (The Bank Job), Ulrich Thomsen (Hitman), and yes, Nic Cage. Also, don’t be surprised that a film about witches isn’t coming out around Halloween, because director Dominic Sena’s last film, Whiteout, sat on the shelf for nearly a year before a soft release.

Though October is considered a dead financial month for films, it was nice that the trailer tried to cover it up by proclaiming that “Halloween is for Amateurs.” March isn’t a much better time, but it is where bad horror films go to die, so don’t expect much on March 19th when Season of the Witch opens nationwide.

Check out the first teaser trailer after the jump!

New Poster for ‘Whiteout’ Revealed

by Chris Ullrich, Aug 7 2009 // 5:00 PM

kate-beckinsale-Whiteout-gunWe’ve been anticipating the arrival of the film based on Greg Rucka and Steve Lieber’s graphic novel Whiteout for some time now. Previously, we’ve had some info to share with you about the film, including two trailers and an interview with Lieber about his latest project, Underground, where we also talk a bit about the film.

Now, thanks to the MySpace page of Trailer Park, we’ve got the brand new poster for Whiteout to bring you today. This one features a large Kate Beckinsale close up looking pretty great and also very cold. To be honest, I kinda like some of the earlier posters a bit better but at least this one features more Kate, which is never a bad thing.

The movie, which tells the story of U.S. Marshall Carrie Steko (Beckinsale) investigating the first murder ever to take place in Antarctica, is directed by Dominic Sena and co-stars Gabriel Macht, Columbus Short, Alex O’Loughlin, Shawn Doyle and Tom Skerritt. It hits theaters on September 11.

Click through to check out the brand new poster.

New Trailer for ‘Whiteout’ Revealed

by Jennifer Tomooka, Jul 23 2009 // 8:00 AM

beckinsale-whiteoutThe latest trailer for the Warner Bros. thriller Whiteout surfaced on IGN today. The graphic novel adaptation stars Kate Beckinsale as US Marshall Carrie Stetko, who is investigating Antarctica’s first murder. The film is helmed by Dominic Sena and also stars Gabriel Macht, Columbus Short, Alex O’Loughlin, Shawn Doyle and Tom Skerritt.

This teaser will seem familiar to fans, as most of the material from the first trailer remains intact. However, this version gives viewers who may not be familiar with the source material a greater understanding of the world Stetko inhabits and what she must do before the freezing winter plunges the continent into darkness.

Whiteout hits theaters September 11. Check out the trailer after the jump.

Interview: Jeff Parker and Steve Lieber Go ‘Underground’

by Chris Ullrich, Jun 26 2009 // 10:00 AM

ug_01_00_colorBoth Jeff Parker and Steve Lieber are well-known in the world of comics. Parker, a veteran writer of such titles as Marvel Adventures Fantastic Four and Guy Ritchie’s Gamekeeper and Lieber, the artist responsible for drawing the monster hit Whiteout, have worked side by side as partners in Portland’s Periscope studios for years. But they’ve never worked on a project together before. That is, until now.

This year, the two have teamed up to create the five-issue miniseries Underground, which hits stores in September and is published by Image Comics. Parker and Lieber were nice enough to share some pages of the new book — which are featured at the end of the interview. I also had a chance to chat with the creators a bit about the new book, their inspiration for creating it, Steve’s reaction now that the Whiteout movie is finally on the way and more.

The Flickcast: Underground is an interesting title. How did it come about?

Steve Lieber: Tim Cahill wrote an essay of caving the made my brain explode. I knew the moment I finished reading it I had to draw a cave story.

TF: Tell us about the story? What was your inspiration for creating it?

SL: That one should go more to Jeff. I had a sense of the setting, and scenes, and the tone I wanted to strike, but I didn’t know who my characters were, so I didn’t have a story. I had a lot of conversations with Parker about it, and it was clear that he just had a much better sense of the people and the conflicts they’d find themselves in.

Where he grew up is an easy drive to the Kentucky state line, so he’s writing with some real understanding.

New ‘Whiteout’ Trailer Surfaces

by Chris Ullrich, Jun 17 2009 // 7:00 AM

beckinsale-whiteoutEven though filming was completed almost two years ago, the trailer for Whiteout has finally been released. The film, based on the Eisner Award winning graphic novel written by Greg Rucka and drawn by Steve Lieber, stars Kate Beckinsale as U.S. Marshall Carrie Stetko. Stetko is at the remote base of McMurdo investigating the first murder ever to take place in Antarctica. A location so remote, that its described in the trailer as “the most isolated landmass on the planet.”

Of course, while Beckinsale’s character investigates the murder, she comes to realize a greater conspiracy may be at work. With the help of The Spirit‘s Gabriel Macht, who plays another agent investigating the same murder, she must unravel the mystery before McMurdo is plunged into six months of wintery darkness.

As a big fan of the source material, I’m glad to be finally seeing the trailer for this film. Seeing as how it was finished almost two years ago, I was beginning to wonder if it would ever see the light of day. The trailer makes the film look pretty good so I’m not sure why it took so long to get released. Of course, a good trailer isn’t always an indicator of a good film. But with Whiteout finally getting a release date, we’ll get to know for sure soon enough.

Check out the trailer after the break.

Bruce Willis Wants Warren Ellis’ ‘Red’

by Matt Raub, Apr 30 2009 // 3:34 PM

There are very few constants in this world, but moviegoers can rest easy knowing that, for the past 21 years, Bruce Willis has made consistent action films and while they may not all be consistently “good” (I’m looking at you, Hudson Hawk), John McClane keeps going strong, spitting out quips and blowing up city blocks. According to The Hollywood Reporter, at the fresh age of 54, Willis is once again setting his sights on the comic book world, as he’s now in talks for the lead an adaptation of Warren Ellis’ graphic novel RED.

Published by Wildstorm and DC, the story revolves around Paul Moses, a retired CIA agent living in seclusion. A new director is appointed to the CIA, who uncovers all of the heinous activities that Moses had done under employment of the agency, and changes the status of former Agent Moses from “Green” to “Red”, thus signing for his assassination. (Sounds a bit too close to the plot of the USA series Burn Notice, right?)

The adaptation of the series was initially announced in June of last year, when Summit Entertainment picked up the rights for the Ellis’ book. The film is being scripted by the team of Eric and Jon Hoeber, who just finished the script for this year’s Whiteout, starring Kate Beckinsale and The Spirit‘s Gabriel Macht. Bruce Willis will next be seen in the Disney thriller (?) Surrogates, and is also attached to Kevin Smith’s buddy cop film A Couple of Dicks, and a live-action adaptation of the video game Kane & Lynch. Busy guy!
