Dave’s Weekly Comic Book Recommendations

by David Press, Sep 16 2009 // 11:15 AM

Batman and Robin #4 cover by Frank QuitelyHappy Wednesday! This week there is a great mix and mash of comics, and we hope you’ll at least give a look at a few of these. First off: ever wonder what it would be like if the writer/artist of The Dark Knight Returns teams with the artist of Watchmen? Now you’ll know this week as Frank Miller and Dave Gibbons team up for The Life and Times of Martha Washington in the 21st century. The thing is PRICEY though, so at keep an eye out for a cheaper version when it hits stands.

From DC Comics this week, we have Philip Tan replacing Frank Quitely on Batman and Robin. Its worth getting to see the difference. There’s a Quitely cover at least. The good news is that Grant Morrison’s collaborator on Seaguy Cameron Stewart will be joining the team following Tan. Fortunately, Quitely is staying on as the cover artist, and every week he turns in a new cover I can’t help but make that my computer background. Just look at that sucker.

Also, from DC is Blackest Night #3, this juicy and horrific tale is crazy weird.  Almost Howling or Piranha-like but in comics. Not cheesy horror, but outlandish horror.

The final five issues of Brian K. Vaughan’s brilliant Ex Machina series starts this week and I kinda feel like I did when Y: The Last Man was ending. Something really special is ending and we’re never going to see it again.  Well, that’s a mixed bag. Though we’re going to have movie versions of these comics I just mentioned, Vaughan is slipping away from comics. With his Roundtable script being on this year’s Black List and selling that script for six figures, plus leaving the Lost writer’s room, I can only imagine that hopefully this means more comics for Vaughan but I fear that’s probably not the case.

From Marvel, the only thing really worth it is Ed Brubaker’s Captain America Reborn. What I like about Ed Brubaker is that while he’s a slow burn and you have to be ultra committed to sticking with him, and this book’s case it is painfully so, its always worth it in the end.  Its time to move the story forward, we get Captain America is Quantum Leaping through his life, now lets move forward from that.

As always, we here at The Flickcast care about what you read, so leave us a comment and let us know what you liked/didn’t like from this week’s comics. For a more complete list of what comes out this week, Midtown Comics has a great listing of everything.

The team also made some great picks again this week including Matt’s pick of the new film Gamer featuring Gerard Butler, Christina’s choice of TV’s Project Runway and Chris’ pick of Mark Millar and John Romita, Jr.’s comic Kick-Ass.

As always, if you have comments, questions, critiques or offers of sponsorship, feel free to hit us up in the comments, on Twitter and at Facebook, MySpace or via email.

Daft Punk Comes to ‘DJ Hero’

by Matt Raub, Sep 16 2009 // 9:00 AM

DJ Hero - Daft Punk MixologyWith the epic battle between Guitar Hero and Rock Band waging on these past few months, the fans have only been caught in the crossfire of awesomeness. First, fans get to take a swing at metal with Guitar Hero: Metallica, then Rock Band retaliated with their Beatles expansion last week. Now it looks like the Heroes are swapping a guitar for a turntable in DJ Hero.

We’ve had quite a bit of news surrounding this fresh new game, and we’re all pretty excited about it’s release. We’re now getting word that the legendary techno funk band Daft Punk will play a pretty big part in the game as one of the playable DJ’s and even a handful of their songs.

Check out the newest trailer featuring Daft Punk and their songs included in the game after the jump. Don’t forget to grab DJ Hero in stores on October 27.

Two More New ‘Heroes’ Season 4 Preview Clips

by Chris Ullrich, Sep 16 2009 // 8:00 AM

heroes-poster-1Among all the shows either starting fresh this Fall or coming back, Heroes still has a special place in our hearts. Sure, the show might have lost its way a bit during the last couple seasons, but compared to many other shows on TV, its still got some compelling characters, interesting storyline and is often just plain fun to watch.

Of course, we’ve been keeping tabs on the developments of this coming season and have even managed to bring you a few bits of info here and there to help build your excitement for the shows’ return. Now, we’re at it again and have a couple more videos to share with you today. As usual, these videos are designed to give you some crucial information and insight into the characters and situations that will be the focal points of this new season.

Plus, they’re also intended to show that the show’s producers and writers are taking a “back to basics” approach to the story arc for the season and will be returning to elements that made the show so great when it was first on. Fortunately, based on what I can see here, they’re definitely heading in the right direction. The other video is a more standard “behind the scenes” promo which is also pretty interesting, even to someone who used to actually work in the business.

Be sure to check out both videos after, you guessed it, the jump. Also, be sure to catch the brand new season of Heroes when it comes back to NBC on Mon., Sept. 21st 8/7c.

Episode 3 of ‘The Guild’ Goes Live on MSN

by Matt Raub, Sep 15 2009 // 1:15 PM

Picture 2Felicia Day and her gang of Warcrafting anti-socialites are now back in full force with season three of The Guild over on MSN.com and the Xbox Live Arcade. The show has taken off since it’s launch back in 2007 about a group of quirky computer gamers and their interactions with one another.

The team has picked up quite a lot of other notoriety since the birth of the web series. Felicia Day has had huge success from her role as Penny on Dr. Horrible’s Sing-A-Long Blog and the unaired 13th episode of Dollhouse. Also, Sandeep Parikh has had great spinoff success with his Legend of Zelda parody, Legend of Neil.

Season 3 started off about a month ago, which picked up a few weeks after the epic season 2 cliffhanger. This season has already brought the guilders out of their natural habitat of a computer screen into human contact with other gamers while waiting in line for a new expansion. Last week’s episode introduced a new, evil guild led by none other than Wil Wheaton.

Check out episode 3 of season 3 after the jump, entitled “Player Down”, and catch The Guild on MSN.com and other places every Tuesday.

New ‘Lost’ Season 6 Poster Revealed

by Matt Raub, Sep 15 2009 // 1:00 PM

lost-20090911004220892With Fall TV making it’s way back on the airwaves this week, we tube jockeys are sure to get lost in some of the fray. One midseason show that most of the country will have their eyes on this January will be the return of Lost for it’s sixth and final season.

The first promotional poster has been revealed for the season, and it shows more than we would ever hope for a show normally shrouded in secrecy. The poster shows just about every character that has had a major role on the show over the past 6 years, and could this mean that we’ll see them again come January? Also, why are some characters in suits and others in island garb? How is Mr. Eko back?

Hopefully these answers will come soon, but in the meantime, check out the high-res shots of the poster after the jump, and get ready for the episode “LA X” to air on January 27, 2010.

Sneak Peak at Capcom’s Upcoming ‘Spyborgs’

by Cortney Zamm, Sep 15 2009 // 12:00 PM

SpyborgscoverartOne upcoming game we’re keeping our eyes on here at The Flickcast is Capcom’s Spyborgs. In Spyborgs, gamers play as cybernetically enhanced superheroes who are betrayed by one of their own from the elite Spyborgs Institute. Players must team up to defeat this traitor through more than 35 stages of mind-blowing challenges, packed with epic boss battles and swarms of enemies that only two can defeat.

Players can choose between three cyborgs: Clandestine, a quick and nimble female ninja, Bouncer, a lumbering but powerful robot, and Stinger, a soldier with a cybernetic gun arm. The Flickcast got an exclusive look at Bouncer and Stinger showing off their combo moves, which allow players to team up for additional damage to enemies.

You won’t have long to wait, as this action-packed shooter is available exclusively for the Nintendo Wii on Sept. 22. In the meantime, you can check out the video after the jump.

‘Expendables’ Bootleg Trailer Goes Online

by Matt Raub, Sep 15 2009 // 11:00 AM

expendablesposterThough the term “bootleg” gets thrown around often in a negative light when it comes to the internet, sometimes it can be the only way to see footage from one of the most buzzed about films in production today. Of course, that film is Sylvester Stallone’s The Expendables.

The action packed film stars Stallone, Jason Statham, Steve Austin, Randy Couture, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke, Terry Crews, Eric Roberts, with special cameos from Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger. The phone-shot trailer, shot in a theaters in Venice, shows off some of the action and comedy that we can expect to see in the film.

Check out the trailer after the jump, and enjoy the line “Bring it, Happy Feet!” from a yelling Sly.

The Expendables hits theaters August 20th of next year.

UPDATE: Well, that didn’t take long. The trailer is now gone. We’ll try to find another link.

Update 2: Here’s another link. Get it while its hot.

‘Fringe’ Returns This Week

by Chris Ullrich, Sep 15 2009 // 10:00 AM

fringe-joshua-jackson-anna-torv-john-nobleEven though we’ve started a new feature here at The Flickcast highlighting our own Cortney Zamm’s favorite new or returning TV shows, I felt compelled to mention a show she didn’t include in yesterday’s edition. She picked some great ones for sure and shows that I intend to watch, I just feel this one also warrants attention. I’m talking, of course, about Fox’s Fringe which, if you’re not watching it, I have to ask you “Why not?”

Sure, on the surface, the show seems like a combination of X-Files and “name of cop show here” but its more than that. In addition to the compelling and intricate storyline, a great cast led by Anna Torv as FBI Special Agent/Blonde Brooding Problem Child Olivia Dunham and the amazing John Noble as Brilliant Scientist/Resident Whack Job Walter Bishop, well photographed visuals and lots of drama and tension, it also has something else going for it: humor.

Putting aside the show’s dark and often violent storyline, the show is often very funny — especially when Walter Bishop is in a scene. Noble is one of those actors that effortlessly inhabits a role and has become Walter Bishop week after week. He’s entertaining, smart and knows how to deliver a joke. Plus, he’s pretty much the smartest guy in the room and can really help solve all those inter-dimensional and alien hybrid issues that seem to keep popping up.

If you haven’t checked out Fringe yet, now’s your chance because it returns to Fox this Thursday at 9/8C. Until then, take a look at the Fringe season two promo after the jump to get you in the mood.
