DLC Review: ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 – Resurgence Pack’

by John Carle, Jun 10 2010 // 9:00 AM

Already having a much smoother launch than its predecessor, the Resurgence Pack dominates the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 playlists. The five maps bring with them new strategies and further multiplayer variety, something that many of us who have sunk in an ungodly amount of time playing will surely appreciate. The timed exclusivity of this pack along with the Stimulus Package has proven its worth as sales dominate on the XBox 360 marketplace.

As with the Stimulus Package, three of the five maps in the Resurgence Pack are completely new (“Carnival”, “Trailer Park” and “Fuel”) while two are revamps of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare maps (“Vacant” and “Strike”). Activision has shown they have the power to set their own price point as years ago, many would have been up in arms about a $15 fee for only three new maps along with two they have played before.

Not surprisingly, “Vacant” and “Strike” both have very dated seen-it-before feels to them both. Even not having played them in the original Modern Warfare, they feel like incredibly generic scenery and layouts in comparison to many of the other maps in this game. “Strike” does nothing to make itself standout with its generic Middle Eastern city setting. “Vacant” goes on to feel like a map that has appeared over the years in everything dating back to Counter-Strike.

Writers Hired for ‘Green Lantern 2′ and ‘The Flash’

by Chris Ullrich, Jun 10 2010 // 8:00 AM

In this case you can’t accuse Hollywood of not planning ahead. With Martin Campbell’s Green Lantern film still over a year from release, Warner Bros. is already getting ready for a sequel.

The studio has reportedly hired writers Greg Berlanti (Everwood), Michael Green (Kings) and Marc Guggenheim (Eli Stone) to put together a treatment for the next installment of Green Lantern. These are the same writers who penned the first film so obviously the studio must be pretty happy with their work to bring them back again.

Reinforcing that is the news that the trio, in addition to working on a new Green Lantern, will also be working on a treatment for another comic book adaptation: The Flash. According to the report, the writers would work on both treatments and would eventually be selected to write the screenplay for one of the two projects, although which one is still to be determined.

It’s encouraging that Warner Bros. seems to feel so confidant in Green Lantern. It’s a rare move by a major studio to work on a sequel to a film this far in advance, especially one that hasn’t even been finished or released yet. Let’s hope this means Green Lantern will be the awesome film we all hope it will be.

Green Lantern is currently filming in new Orleans with an expected release next year.

Apple’s iPad + AT&T = Security Breach

by Erik Jensen, Jun 10 2010 // 7:00 AM

Own a 3G-enabled iPad? You personal data may have been exposed in one of the first kerfuffles to erupt over Apple’s beloved iPad tablet. WiFi-only users? You’re safe for now.

But owners who signed up for 3G service via AT&T have been reportedly subject to an exploit that left nearly 115K iPad owners, including dozens of CEOs, military officials, and top politicians, exposed to hackers whose motives remain unclear.

From what we’re hearing from Gawker’s Valleywag site, the damage seems limited to e-mail addresses alone. However in some cases, these addresses happened to belong to individuals who make them very valuable. 3G subscribers who have been compromised include thousands of A-listers in finance, politics and media.

Would you like to e-mail NY Times Co. CEO Janet Robinson? Or how about Diane Sawyer of ABC News? Is Harvey Weinstein or Mayor Michael Bloomberg more your speed? For hackers who captured these high-level e-mails, even White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel’s address isn’t off-limits. No bueno.

In AT&T’s defense, their security personnel closed the security hole in recent days, but the victims have been unaware, until now. Who did it? Why did they do it? Read on past the jump to learn more about the hacker group responsible for this exploit and how they pulled it off.

Western Wednesdays: ‘Death Rides A Horse’

by Elisabeth Rappe, Jun 9 2010 // 3:50 PM

There’s something a bit sad in seeing a grimy spaghetti western after Quentin Tarantino has already had his way with it. This is a film I would have liked to have discovered at 1am on a cable channel, the better to marvel at its split-screen flashbacks and Morricone score.  But that was not to be. Instead, I saw this film by way of Kill Bill, which lifts best parts, and runs with them.

The plot of Death Rides a Horse is exceedingly simple and familiar.  Bill Meceita (John Phillip Law) watches his family butchered by a gang of outlaws, and grows up vowing to avenge them.  A few dusty canyons away, Ryan (Lee Van Cleef) has just been let out of prison, and is hunting the gang with dreams of extortion dancing in his angel eyes. Ryan refuses to work with Bill, but they end up crossing and recrossing paths anyway.  Sometimes they help the other out, sometimes they double cross, but it always ends with one of them being stranded in the desert.

Death Rides A Horse is not a great spaghetti western.   It wears its Leone homages heavy on its sleeve — the relationship between Ryan (Lee Van Cleef) and Bill Meceita (John Phillip Law) is a pale imitation between Manco and Col. Mortimer in A Few Dollars More, with lots of “old man!” and “boy!” thrown around.

‘DJ Hero 2′ To Offer Two Turntables & Microphone

by John Carle, Jun 9 2010 // 2:30 PM

DJ Hero was a top game for not just the Flickcast, but for the whole video game industry last year. Not only was it a unique take on the music game genre, it was also one of the two best as it shared that title with Beatles: Rock Band in our Best of 2009 awards. Since we all know how Activision feels about franchising, we knew it was only a matter of time before they were going to announce a sequel. Today, that came to fruition with the announcement of DJ Hero 2.

DJ Hero 2 looks to take the original game’s successful formula and kick it up not one, but two notches. The original DJ Hero featured the newly created turntable controller and a mixer. The sequel will take advantage of the two sided functionality of the mixer and add on a second turntable, helping recreate a more authentic DJing experience. In addition, a microphone will come into play for multiplayer mode (or just a very talented multitasker).

Speaking of mutliplayer, DJ Battles will be added to the game featuring mixes created specifically for the battle mode. Party Play will allow for vocalists to jump in and jump out of songs while singing or rapping along with the current song. Single player has also been revised with the creation of the new Empire Mode. Empire Mood will be a career mode styled upon being a unknown rookie DJ who looks to become the CEO of a major entertainment empire, all through his DJing skills.

Could This Be the Premise Of ‘Indiana Jones 5′?

by Sebastian Suchecki, Jun 9 2010 // 1:30 PM

We like to stay clear from most rumors when it comes to movie news, but sometimes there is something that comes along we can’t pass up. This time, the news is in the form of a possible plot leak of the upcoming Indiana Jones sequel, which would be the fifth film in the series.

Many people remember Crystal Skull as being the Phantom Menace of Indiana Jones films, with things like aliens, monkey kidnappers, and the entire concept of Mutt Williams, but this newest rumor could be the thing that saves the Indy franchise. From the New Zealand website Stuff:

Harrison Ford’s final outing as Indiana Jones will be “emotional and exciting” as the franchise heads back to its roots after a badly received fourth installment.

Indiana Jones 5 will begin shooting next year, and much of the plot line will be centered around the Bermuda Triangle, an area over the North Atlantic Ocean where a number of aircraft are said to have disappeared.

Movie bosses have assured fans the film will stay true to the series’ roots, and won’t contain lots of state-of-the-art special effects.

Exclusive: Creator Matt Nix Talks Season Four of ‘Burn Notice’

by Matt Raub, Jun 9 2010 // 12:30 PM

Over the past 5 years or so, USA has churned out some pretty impressive new shows. Some we’ve expressed interest in previously, like Psych and Monk, and some that keep growing on us with every action-packed season, like Burn Notice.

We recently got the chance to sit in on a conversation with the series creator and show runner Matt Nix so he could finally answer some of the burning (no pun intended) questions that we’ve had about the series since the get-go. Matt also discussed the current season’s impressive upcoming episodes and guest stars.

The first episode of the fourth season aired last week on USA to record ratings. The episode pulled in 6.6 million viewers, which is nearly a fourth more than last season’s premier brought in.

Check out what Matt had to say about the show, its growing success, and things we can expect to see in this season of Burn Notice.

What can you tell us about this upcoming season and how it will effect Michael (Jeffrey Donovan)?

The Flickcast – Episode 59: Living In A ‘Twilight’ Nation

by Joe Gillis, Jun 9 2010 // 11:30 AM

This week on The Flickcast Chris and Matt chat about one of the bigger cultural events of this past weekend, the MTV Movie Awards. They delve into why people actually watch the awards, and some of their favorite moments. Plus, they talked all things iPhone 4, which was just announced this week.

Also, the boys weighed in on some pretty big casting news for Marvel fans with Stanley Tucci, Neal McDonough and Jeremy Renner joining various upcoming movies. Plus, they debated the various actors in the running to play the title role in the new Spider-Man reboot.

This week’s picks stayed in the realm of science fiction as Chris picked the recently released movie Splice, which is currently in theaters. Matt also stayed inside the sci-fi world as he picked the comic Serenity: Float On, which takes place after the film, and is written by comedian Patton Oswalt.

As always, if you have comments, questions, critiques, offers of sponsorship or whatever, feel free to hit us up in the comments, on Twitter, at Facebook and MySpace or via email.

David Tennant and Christopher Mintz-Plasse Join ‘Fright Night’ Reboot

by Chris Ullrich, Jun 9 2010 // 10:30 AM

Previously, we brought you the first info on the upcoming reboot of the classic horror film Fright Night along with some early casting news. Now, the number of actors in the new film has increased by two. According to Heat Vision, David Tennant, best known for the BBC series Doctor Who and Christopher Mintz-Plasse of Superbad and Kick-Ass fame have joined the film.

The two actors are now part of a cast which already includes Anton Yelchin, Colin Farrell and Toni Colette who are playing Charlie, an evil vampire and Charlie’s disbelieving Mom respectively. Tennant will play Peter Vincent, a late-night horror show host made famous by the late Roddy McDowall in the original film. In the rebooted version, Tennant instead plays a Las Vegas magician whose act centers on horror movie images.

Vincent, of course, claims to be a vampire expert, but when Charlie asks him for help with Colin Farrell’s evil vampness and his Mom’s recent attraction to the vamps, it turns out his vampire hunting skills leave something to be desired. Mintz-Plasse will star as Charlie’s friend, Evil Ed, who feels slighted when Charlie leaves his nerdy past, and his friend, behind. As revenge, Ed joins the vampires and becomes a nemesis for Charlie.

The film, written by former Buffy scribe Mari Noxon and directed by Craig Gillespie, is expected to hit theaters sometime in 2011.

With E3 just a week away, everyone is starting to make some interesting guesses on what is coming to the show floor. One thing we know for sure will be shown in its soon-to-be-released glory will be Transformers: War for Cybertron.

Releasing just a week after E3, June 22nd, War for Cybertron looks to be the biggest and best Transformers game to date.

Take a sneak preview below at the trailer scheduled for the Activision booth on the floor of E3 next week which features a special reveal of one of the game’s new boss battles, Trypticon.

Looking to be the forerunner to the Dynobots, this impressive beast looks like he is ready to put the hurt on Optimus and his Autobot compatriots.

TV RECAP: ‘Glee: Journey’

by Nat Almirall, Jun 9 2010 // 8:47 AM

So Quinn’s pregnant, Jesse (thankfully) dumped Rachel and got back with his group Vocal Adrenaline, which is poised to win regionals. If they do, then Glee Club’s over (have they used the looming cancellation of Glee Club a bit too much this season?). To make things worse, Sue’s one of the judges, due to her recent celebrity status. Will protests, but Principal Figgins (How long before they do a “Ha, ha, ha, Mr. ‘iggins” number?) won’t budge.

Will organizes a group meeting at his home, where the students weep over the inevitable demise of the club and whine about how their social lives will suffer a similar fate. He also tries to patch things up/seek help from on/off flame Emma, who in turn lets slip that she’s been dating her dentist Carl Howell “He’s impressed with my oral hygiene”(and doesn’t that name sound like it belongs on Arrested Development?).

Finn confronts Rachel in the hall and presses her to lead the group to regionals—and in a surprising character turn, and even though she looks on the verge of tears, Rachel doesn’t cry! Instead, she kisses him. Way to go!

On the drive home, Will’s radio starts playing…wait for it…wait for it…

Yup:

“Don’t Stop Believin’,” which inspires him to devise an all-Journey venue for regionals. After an impassioned pep talk about how far the Glee students have come, he…uh…proposes the plan, which, oddly, the students didn’t see coming.

New ‘Mortal Kombat’ Short Better Than The Films

by Matt Raub, Jun 9 2010 // 7:00 AM

We’re all pretty big fans of Bridget Wilson, so we can’t say the original Mortal Kombat film was a complete waste, but it still wasn’t all that good. There seems to be a light at the end of the tunnel, though, as a new video surfaced online. Yesterday, Kotaku was the first to get a brand new video which is being posed as a live action short for the new Mortal Kombat game.

It hasn’t been officially confirmed , so whether it’s for a new M-Rated game they are planning, or the new Warner Bros. reboot which has been talked about for a few months, your guess is as good as ours.

The video is far too high-end to be a fan film, and has some impressive names attached, such as Michael Jai White as Jackson “Jax” Briggs and Jeri Ryan as Sonja Blade. If this turns out to be for either the game or a film, it would be a completely different take on the Mortal Kombat mythology, as they’re modernizing many of the characters, and taking an interesting Saw-like serial killer take, where characters like Reptile and Barakka are insane killers, and not magic.

With E3 only days away, and none of us hearing about casting for an upcoming film, this could very well be a live-action scene for the game, which we’re also completely OK with. We’re sure to have a legitimate answer within the next week or so.

Check out the video after the jump, and let us know what you think and see for yourself that Mortal Kombat is definitely not for kids anymore.
