Judge Dredd was a science fiction movie that was released in 1995 about a judge (played by Sylvester Stallone) who is wrongly accused of murder in a dystopian future. The film grossed just shy of $35M at the domestic box office, but it has been set for a reboot in 2012.
The reboot will be simply entitled DREDD, according to recent reports. The character Judge Dredd is one of the most famous UK comic characters, and was ranked 7th greatest comic character by popular British film magazine Empire.
British film company DNA films will be working with Rebellion Developments and IM Global to bring the movie to fruition after almost two years. An official synopsis has been released.
“DREDD takes us to the wild streets of Mega City One, the lone oasis of quasi-civilization on Cursed Earth. Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) is the most feared of elite Street Judges, with the power to enforce the law, sentence offenders and execute them on the spot – if necessary.”
The film will star Karl Urban (Star Trek) as Dredd, and Olivia Thirlby (Juno) as Cassandra Anderson. Pete Travis (Vantage Point) will direct, and Alex Garland (28 Days Later, Sunshine) will deliver the screenplay. It is interesting to note that Garland will also be writing the screenplay for the upcoming Halo, a sure sign of confidence in his writing.
The 1995 Judge Dredd was criticized for not honoring its comic book roots. DREDD sounds like it will be a little closer to the comic book vision. It is slated for a 2012 release.

Every year, one film likes to stand out as the tiny indie flick that comes out of left field and turns heads everywhere. Last year’s is most memorable, as Paranormal Activity blew up in the box office and kept people awake for weeks. Now it looks like Rogue Pictures’ Catfish may do the same.
For those not in the loop, here’s the official synopsis:
In late 2007, filmmakers Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost sensed a story unfolding as they began to film the life of Ariel’s brother, Nev. They had no idea that their project would lead to the most exhilarating and unsettling months of their lives. A reality thriller that is a shocking product of our times, Catfish is a riveting story of love, deception and grace within a labyrinth of online intrigue.
The film plays itself like a classic tale of romance, with a modern social networking twist, and then turns into something completely different. We’ve got four new clips to prove that point, served up just for you.
Take a look at the clips after the jump, and catch Catfish in limited theaters on September 17th.

Liam Neeson has joined the cast of Battleship today. Neeson was added to the cast of the Universal Pictures science fiction action adventure just as filming began today.
Battleship is based on the popular board game by the same name. The writers are obviously taking some liberties with the game in order to create the film. In the movie, a naval fleet at sea must protect the earth from alien invaders.
Neeson will be playing Admiral Shane, a Naval officer whose daughter is engaged to the film’s main protagonist, Alex Hopper, who is played by Taylor Kitsch (X-men Origins:Wolverine).
Neeson’s daughter will be played by relative unknown Brooklyn Decker, who had guest appearances on television shows including Chuck and Ugly Betty. Alexander Skarsgaard (True Blood) plays Kitsch’s older brother, and R&B songstress Rihanna is making her acting debut as she plays Kitsch’s crew mate and a weapons specialist. Tom Arnold will also be part of the cast, but no news on what his role will entail.
Set for release on May 18th of 2012, Battleship comes from producers Scott Stuber, Peter Berg, Duncan Henderson and Sarah Aubrey, as well as Hasbro’s Brian Goldner and Bennett Schneir. The flick will shoot on location in Hawaii and Baton Rouge.

Reports have been trickling in from the Telluride Film Festival about Darren Aronofsky’s psychological drama Black Swan, and word on the street is that the film is good, very good. Star Natalie Portman is receiving early Oscar buzz for her portrayal of a Ballerina with a very unhealthy obsession.
This is one of the most highly anticipated movies of the late fall film season. If the movie is as good as early buzz indicates, Portman will certainly be a hot commodity.
Now, Deadline is reporting that Portman has been offered the lead role in the 3D adventure Gravity, after Angelina Jolie reportedly declined the role.
Gravity began its development journey at Universal, but is now being backed by Warner Brothers, who have extended the offer to Portman. When Jolie declined the role, many feared the project was dead. With a budget of around $80M, Warner Brothers needed to find someone who could carry the movie. Portman may be the perfect choice.
Her most well-known roles to date are in the movies V for Vendetta, Star Wars Episodes II and III, Beautiful Girls, Cold Mountain, and The Professional, which was her stunning acting debut. She has also amassed several indie films on her resume, including Closer and Garden State.
Gravity will be directed by Alfonso Cuarón, notable for Children of Men, Y tu mamá también, and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
Robert Downey Jr. will co-star, though the female role will be of primary importance in the movie, as it tells the story of a lone survivor of a space mission and her fight to get back to earth and her daughter.
Black Swan is scheduled for a US release on December 1st.

With Apple’s recent announcement of the new Apple TV, the competition for your living room is heating up once again with Google set to soon jump fully into the fray. Announced in May, Google TV has officially been given a launch date here in the US.
According to the report, Google will launch its TV service in the United States this autumn and worldwide next year. CEO Eric Schmidt said the service, which will allow users to browse the Internets via their televisions, would be free, and Google will work with a diverse group of content providers and electronics manufacturers to bring it to consumers.
Companies such as Sony and Samsung are already looking at including the service in their devices. More are sure to follow suit, if only to try and secure a better deal for themselves then Apple has traditionally provided.
The real question is do people want to use the Internet on their TV’s? I suppose they do considering I do it every day by watching something like Hulu or Instant Netflix on my TV via the XBox 360 or PS3.
Although, I wouldn’t exactly call me a “typical consumer” so what I do with technology might be more than most people are willing, or able, to do. That said, if Google TV does end up having those features, I might be more interested.
Want to know more about Google TV? If so, check out the official video explaining it after the jump.

The international uncensored grindhouse-style teaser trailer for Hobo with a Shotgun broke online over the weekend.
The film is based on a fan-made trailer by director Jason Eisener that went on to win the Robert Rodriguez Grindhouse Trailer contest at this year’s South by Southwest. In the film, a homeless hobo vigilante cleans up the streets by blowing away crooked cops, pedophile Santas, and other scumbags with his trusty pump-action shotgun.
In the teaser trailer we see Rutger Hauer (Blade Runner) flawlessly portray a hobo chillingly explaining his ruthless actions to a nursery full of babies. We get a portrait of a dystopian society where rape, murder, corruption and drugs have taken over, which can only be cleaned up by a man with nothing to loose. In true “grindhouse” fashion, we are also treated to tons of explosive blood and gore.
Relative unknown Jason Eisener (Treevenge) is set to direct the film. This movie is set t0 hit screens in 2012. Filming for the film begins this Monday.
With the release of Machete and Hobo with a Shotgun now coming to theaters, can we expect to see more Grindhouse exploitation films on the way soon? What do you think about the new trend where films are trying to be bad on purpose? Can terrible films start throwing the grindhouse moniker in their tag lines to try and play off bad writing?
Keep it here for all your Hobo with a Shotgun news and check out the trailer after the jump.

To say the first trailer for Mega Man Universe was a little confusing and vague would be an understatement. Luckily after more than a month of silence, Capcom has finally released the first gameplay footage of the title which, now looking back, makes a lot more sense. Keiji Inafune, the creator of Mega Man explains in the video below that players will get the chance to experience a Mega Man game using various incarnations and art styles for the character, as well as some Street Fighter characters as well.
Below, you will see Mega Man, Bad Box Art Mega Man and Rockman all in action through this 3D modeled 2D sidescroller. There is also a brief glimpse of Ryu in the character loading screen to check out as well. From the looks of things, Mega Man will be sticking to its sidescrolling routes in Mega Man Universe. With that, expect incredibly challenging levels to fight through and an ever changing powerset depending on the villains Mega Man will be squaring off against.
Keiji also mentions that more characters will be added in the future to the title so it is possible that skins resembling Mega Man Battle Network, Mega Man X and other versions from his 20 year history may find their way into the title as well.
Take a peek at the trailer after the jump and make sure to let us know what you think.

While I’m not always a fan of Hollywood’s penchant for remaking excellent foreign films almost as soon as said films have been released, I have to say I’m pretty interested in Matt Reeves’ upcoming film Let Me In. Sure, it’s an Americanized version of a film that was only released in 2008, but judging from the trailer I’ve seen and this brand new scene from the film we’ve got for you today, it looks pretty damn good and quite scary.
In case you’re not familiar with either this new film or the original Swedish version, Let Me In concerns Abby (Chloe Moretz), a mysterious 12-year old girl, who moves next door to Owen (Kodi Smit-McPhee). Owen is a social outcast who is viciously bullied at school and because of this he forms a bond with his new neighbor.
As time passes Owen can’t help noticing that Abby is like no one he has ever met before. As a string of grisly murders occur in the town, Owen has to confront the reality that this seemingly innocent girl is really a savage vampire.
Check out the new clip from the film after the jump. Let Me In arrives in theaters on October 1st.

Sort of. Actually, it’s a clip from a new episode which has been fashioned into a commercial for American Express’s Members Project campaign in which it promotes book drives and not being mean. At least that’s what we got from the commercial.
What we do get, however, is some new footage of some of our favorite Glee cast members like Artie (Kevin McHale), Kurt (Chris Colfer), Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz), Mr. Schuester (Matthew Morrison), and of course, Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch).
This season promises to have some great moments, such as a Britney Spears cameo, songs from Rocky Horror Picture Show and much more. Join the whole gang as Glee returns on September 21st.

George Clooney still has it, at least for this weekend. His latest film The American made an estimated $13M over the weekend, which was good enough for a first place finish.
Labor Day weekend is typically very slow, so believe it or not, that is a healthy box office total. The real shocker is how audiences responded to the film. Cinemascore is a tracking system used to tally audience response to a film. Exit polls are used as indicators of a film’s longevity at the box office. The American earned a shocking D- grade, meaning audiences really hated it. It garnered an F from women. (You can read our positive take on the film here.)
Of course, mis marketing the film as an action movie no doubt led to lots of false expectations. It’s a good film but a tough sell. It is a deliberately paced pot-boiler character study. Those looking for a jolting action flick probably found themselves snoozing in no time.
Holdover Takers landed the number two spot with $11.5M. Machete was hot on its heels with an estimated $11.3M. Considering how graphically violent the movie was, this is a pretty good take, plus its reported budget was only $20M, so it should easily earn back its budget.
