Get A Sneak Peek at Syfy’s Fall Programming

by Joe Gillis, Sep 16 2010 // 1:00 PM

It’s nice that an entire network has decided to devote itself to the pursuit of Sci-Fi movies and TV programs. After all, before Syfy (previously known as Sci-Fi) we geeks had to seek our reruns of Star Trek and monster of the week movies elsewhere. Believe me, it was no easy task.

And finding anywhere that was running not one or two but several Sci-Fi TV series at the same time, forget about it. Fortunately, the Sci-Fi Channel changed all that and now, re-branded as just Syfy, they continue to push the envelope and bring us even more compelling content each and every year.

With that in mind we’ve got a new promo for you today highlighting all the upcoming Fall shows new or returning to Syfy. Among them you’ll see fan favorites Caprica, Sanctuary, Ghost Hunters and Stargate: Universe and some new shows you’ve probably not heard about yet.

Check out the promo after the jump. Syfy will start airing these new and returning programs in the Fall. In other words, pretty darn soon. Enjoy.

‘The Nutcracker’ Gets An Awesome New Trailer

by Matt Raub, Sep 16 2010 // 12:00 PM

It seems to be quite the week for trailers, as David O. Russell’s The Fighter gets a trailer, and now we’ve got a brand new trailer for this Thanksgiving’s big fantasy film, The Nutcracker in 3D.

Of course, the film will have to fight tooth and nail in the box office, as it opens wide on the second weekend of Warner’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, but the trailer makes the film look like it could just win the hearts of families everywhere this November.

The premise is a bit complex, so we’ll let the official synopsis do it justice:

On Christmas night, Mary’s new friend, The Nutcracker (Charlie Rowe) or “NC,” comes to life and takes her on a wondrous journey into his magical world of fairies, sugarplums, and other Christmas toys which come to life. Mary soon realizes that this fantastical kingdom is facing danger from the tyrannical rule of the evil Rat King (John Turturro) and his devious mother (Frances de la Tour).

When NC is taken hostage, Mary and her newfound toy friends must uncover the secret of the Rat King to rescue NC and his kingdom. Based on the story that inspired acclaimed Russian composer Piotr Tchaikovsky to create the music for the iconic ballet, the film includes eight exciting new songs penned by Oscar-winning lyricist and librettist Sir Tim Rice (The Lion King, Evita, Jesus Christ Superstar).

John Turturro as the Rat King? Sold. Don’t let the film’s lack of a major distributor fool you, this film could end up being a major release. At least, that’s what we think after seeing the trailer. Check it out for yourself after the jump, and catch The Nutcracker in 3D in theaters on November 24th.

‘Mystery Science Theater 3000′ Brings It’s 19th Volume To DVD This November

by Joe Gillis, Sep 16 2010 // 11:00 AM

There aren’t very many science fiction comedies out there that have as much of a long-lasting fan following as Mystery Science Theater 3000. Fans of the show have even followed the series’ stars Michael Nelson, Bill Corbett, and Kevin Murphy onto their spinoff venture, RiffTrax.

While RiffTrax is growing in popularity, fans still look to the fine folks at Shout! Factory to release all of their favorite MST3K episodes on DVD in fancy box sets. More recent releases have come with collectible ‘bots to throw up on the shelf, and the most recent release, volume 19, even has an exclusive Gypsy statue to add to that collection. From Shout!

This side-splitting collection of MST3K features the show’s never-before-released episodes Robot Monster, Bride of the Monster, Devil Doll and Devil Fish.  Those entrees come with a side of extras, including a new introduction by J. Elvis Weinstein, cult filmmaker Larry Blamire’s full-fledged geek-out on Robot Monster, new featurettes on Bride of the Monster and Devil Doll, MST3K: Origins and Beyond from CONvergence 2009, original movie trailers, and four exclusive MST3K mini-posters by artist Steve Vance. There might even be an Easter Egg…we’re just sayin’.

The whole box set runs about $70 when it hits the market on November 9th, but that steep price also gets you that fancy Gypsy collectible figurine to go alongside your Crow and Tom Servo figurines. If all of the bots will be collected by volume 19, what special treat do you think we’ll get for the epic 20th volume release next year?

Check out a full image of the box set after the jump, and keep it here on more details surrounding this awesome upcoming release.

Spike TV’s ‘Deadliest Warrior’ Headed to the Big Screen

by Shannon Hood, Sep 16 2010 // 9:00 AM

Paramount has announced that it will bring Spike TV’s popular testosterone laden battle franchise Deadliest Warrior to the big screen. The original program has been one of Spike TV’s most successful shows, and just completed its second season.

A third season is already in the works.  Each week on Deadliest Warrior, two historical (or contemporary) warriors come face to face in a battle to the death, thanks to CGI.

Three commentators with specific fields of knowledge (medical consultant, biomedical scientist, and simulations programmer) provide commentary during each episode.  The show is narrated by Drew Skye.

Information about weapons and skills is fed into a computer program to determine which warrior would actually win the battle in question.  Actors provide dramatization when a character is being introduced.

There is also a spin off called Deadliest Warrior-The Aftermath, which is a round-table discussion that further analyzes each episode and allows fans to posit questions in forums. It is a web-exclusive for Spike TV.

Director and producer Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum) will be teaming up his 21 Laps Entertainment company with Paramount to produce the film.  No story line has been announced, but it is possible (not confirmed) that Levy might direct.

You can catch full episodes of Deadliest Warrior on Spike TV’s official website.

Ryan Reynolds Is Still Talking About ‘Deadpool’

by Matt Raub, Sep 16 2010 // 8:00 AM

Though Green Lantern is prepping to be one of the larger superhero flicks of 2011 (in spite of the possible awesomeness of Thor and Captain America), Ryan Reynolds is still sticking to his word and planning on going back to his role as Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool. In a recent interview with Hero Complex, Reynolds delves into the emotional trauma of the Merc with the Mouth and how much of a mess it will be to get into that character.

Many fans became smitten with him in that role after his performance in the poorly received X-Men Origins: Wolverine last year. Now, Reynolds has wrapped GL, is promoting Buried, and can’t wait to start killing people for money on film.

Here’s what he had to say about Deaadpool:

“It goes in such a different direction than a superhero movie usually goes. It’s a nasty piece of work. It’s just based in so much emotional filth, completely. It’s like ‘Barfly‘ if it were a superhero movie. It sort of treads into the world of an emotionally damaged person.  I always say that Deadpool is a guy in a highly militarized shame spiral…. It’s so different than the superhero movies to date, it departs so far from that.”

First Trailer For ‘The Fighter’ Starring Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale Hits The Web

by Joe Gillis, Sep 16 2010 // 7:00 AM

It may look a bit like Oscar fodder, but the very first trailer for The Fighter starring Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg has hit the web, and it looks like it could be the next Rocky. At least, that seems to be what it’s going for.

The film comes from David O. Russell, the man who brought us I Heart Huckabees and Three Kings starring George Clooney and Ice Cube. It follows the story of boxer “Irish” Micky Ward as he broke into the sport in the mid 1980s.

The movie pits Bale and Wahlberg together as contentious brothers, who’s tension will drive the film and that looks to be a major appeal from the trailer. Also joining in is Oscar nominee Amy Adams, who plays Wahlberg’s love interest.

This script has been on the shelf for quite some time, with nearly half a dozen rewrites and changed studio hands countless times more. It looks like it’s finally found a home at Paramount and will hit theaters on December 10th.

Check out the first full trailer after the jump.

The Flickcast – Episode 70: Afterlife

by Joe Gillis, Sep 15 2010 // 3:00 PM

This week on The Flickcast Chris and Matt dive into more topics of interest and discuss issues affecting society. No, not really. They mostly just bitch about the current state of Hollywood and the lack of creativity in most studio films.

They also manage to talk about a few other things including upcoming premieres of new and returning TV programs such as Community, Fringe, The Big Bang Theory and Chuck as well as the success and relative merits of the latest Resident Evil franchise film. They also talked about more TV programs this week including James Cameron’s True Lies, Ryan Reynolds returning to TV as a producer and new scripted series coming from MTV.

Of course, Chris and Matt also made some picks this week including Matt’s pick of the 1988 Gary Busey film Bulletproof and Chris’ pick of the new Shawn Ryan TV series Terriers.

As always, if you have comments, questions, critiques, offers of sponsorship or whatever, feel free to hit us up in the comments, on Twitter, at Facebook and MySpace or via email.

Verizon Wireless Samsung Galaxy Tab Gets Sorta Official

by Chris Ullrich, Sep 15 2010 // 2:00 PM

It must be nice to work for a site where people send you info about all kinds of interesting new gadgets and gizmos like they do over at The Boy Genius Report. Hopefully, we will start to get that kind of stuff around here soon enough or maybe even over at The Clickcast as well.

Until then, we will just have to bring you items of interest given to other sites we like and read. Case in point is the news that the Samsung Galaxy Tab, which we told you about previously, has now been “officially” leaked and is appearing on Verizon’s internal sales website.

The above image of the device was sent to BGR and pretty much shows that the Tab will be announced as a new Verizon device on Thursday. Good news for those of you waiting for a competitor to the iPad to appear on your favorite carrier. In case you’ve forgotten, here’s the specs for the new device, just to get you excited:

Weinstein Company Acquires ‘Submarine’ at TIFF

by Shannon Hood, Sep 15 2010 // 1:00 PM

The deals are happening fast and furious at the Toronto International Film Festival.  The Weinstein Company has announced that they have acquired the distribution rights to British comedy Submarine.

Ben Stiller serves as one of the film’s executive producers. The film stars Sally Hawkins (Happy Go Lucky), Paddy Considine (Hot Fuzz) and Noah Taylor (Red, White and Blue.)

The synopsis is as follows:

“Submarine is a a comedy which follows a 15-year-old boy with two objectives: To lose his virginity before his next birthday, and to stop his mother from leaving his father for her dance teacher.”

It is an adaptation of  a novel by Joe Dunthorne, and was directed by Richard Ayoade. Bidding took place last night, and Weinstein ultimately acquired the movie for around $1 million dollars, with a promise for hefty publicity and advertising.

Our colleagues who have seen the film are very enthusiastic about it.

New Twitter.com Offers Major Redesign and New User Experience

by Erik Jensen, Sep 15 2010 // 12:00 PM

Have you heard about the new Twitter.com? The revised site offers embedded media, infinite scroll, and a host of new user experience enhancements. World-wide roll-out begins today, but depending on where exactly you are, it could take several weeks for the new features to reach you.

One of the biggest changes facing Twitter.com users is the different layout, which in my opinion, resembles the new iPad native Twitter app. Your @mentions, retweets, searches, and lists sits directly above your timeline now, creating an easy way to switch your view depending on what you’re interested in seeing. On the right, the default starting panel will show you recent followers, who you’re following, along with recent trending topics and suggestions on who to follow.

Clicking a specific tweet causes a panel to slide out to the right, showing you that user’s recent tweets and if they’ve embedded some media with their tweet, you can see a larger version of that as well. If the tweet was geo-tagged, the right-hand panel will display the location on a map. Twitter is offering an easy way to embed both photos and video directly in your tweets, which will be visible within other user’s timelines or visible upon clicking a tweet containing embedded media.

With partnerships with the likes of Vimeo, YouTube, twitpic, Flickr and others, embedding will be easy and seamless. One of the coolest examples of this new feature is sharing a link to an entire Flickr set of pictures. When you do, those who follow will be able to see a bunch of little thumbnails in their right pane. And near the bottom of this pane, a slideshow for the pictures is also automatically created. Very slick indeed.

Apple Reportedly to Offer Newspaper Subscription Service

by Joe Gillis, Sep 15 2010 // 11:00 AM

In what can’t really be a surprise development to anyone, the San Jose Mercury News is reporting that Apple is planning “a new subscription plan for newspapers” for their iPad, iPhone and more that will be launched “soon.” No specific sources are used in the article but it claims the service will have a similar pay structure to the one used in Apple’s App Store, with content providers keeping 60% to 70% of the revenue.

According to the article: “The Cupertino company has agreed to provide an opt-in function for subscribers to allow Apple to share with publishers their information, which includes vital data that news organizations use to attract advertisers.”

People already use the iPad and iPhone for reading books, comics and more so this is a natural evolution of the device. In fact, many newspapers and magazines already feature their content on the iPad.

It doesn’t really take much to imagine others who don’t want to go to the expense of developing their own applications, such as done by the New York Times and Wired Magazine,  and would instead adapt to a subscription model that would probably not require as much work on their part.

If true, this report could prove very interesting indeed and I, for one, would probably opt in to a few newspapers myself. What about you?
