It’s not easy being a consumer trying to cut the cable or fiber cord these days. You’d think with a bevy of hot new set-top boxes like Apple TV, Google TV and Boxee, we’d be living in a Utopian future where television finally does what we want and dumping your expensive provider was a real possibility.
Not so fast, because it’s just not the reality, at least not yet. And predictably, given the nature of content owners, the issues are control and profits.
As thousands of new Apple TV owners plugged in their shiny new boxes, the realization that only a handful of networks were available, slowly began to sink in. With shows from ABC, Fox, Disney, and BBC, Apple TV via iTunes simply does not offer enough diverse content to satisfy most TV-watchers. While that’s a nifty start for Apple’s reboot of Apple TV, certain shows are conspicuously absent.
Are you a ‘Wipeout’ or ‘Big Bang Theory’ fan? Unfortunately, you’re out of luck since iTunes doesn’t carry those shows. And if you think Google TV might be your salvation, it just may be worse for owners of Logitech’s Revue Google TV devices. Upon Google TV’s release, the big three networks as well as Hulu began to block Google TV owners from streaming their shows.
So it’s no shocker that the recent reporting talking about how Microsoft is potentially cobbling together enough network deals to launch it’s own streaming service on the back of its extensive installed base of Xbox gaming systems, has many consumers quite skeptical.

DC’s Animated Original Movie department has been on an absolute roll in the past few years. With amazing stand alone films like Justice League: New Frontier, Batman: Under The Red Hood, and Superman/Batman: Public Enemies, there are very few stories that Bruce Timm and his animators won’t tackle in a 75 minute animated film.
It looks like that trend is continuing with their next film, based on Grant Morrison’s elseworlds story about our favorite Kryptonian in All-Star Superman. Not only will the story be one of the most mature and heavy plots told in this format, but casting director Andrea Romano is sparing no expense on the cast as well. Fans get the voices of stars the voices of James Denton (Desperate Housewives) as Superman, Christina Hendricks (Mad Men) as Lois Lane and Anthony LaPaglia (Without a Trace) as Lex Luthor.
The DVD and Blu-Ray is set to hit stores on February 22nd, but you can check out a complete list of the features on both releases, as well as the beautiful box art after the jump. Stay tuned as we bring you some great coverage of the animated film soon, as well!

The 20th annual Gotham Independent Film Awards were held on Monday night in New York, and the winner was a big surprise to many. Winter’s Bone played at festivals and in limited release earlier this year to rave reviews, but since then it had virtually dropped off the radar. Monday night the film snagged Best Feature Film at the award ceremony. Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan was heavily favored to win.
This year the Gotham Awards were hosted by Patricia Clarkson and Stanley Tucci, who appeared as a married couple in Easy A this year, with Emma Stone.
In addition to best feature, the film snagged Best Ensemble Performance, but star Jennifer Lawrence failed to take home the award for Best Breakout Actor. That honor went to Ronald Bronstein, from Daddy Longlegs. Best Breakout Director was also an upset. Lena Durham (Tiny Furniture) was favored to win, but the honor went to Kevin Asch (Holy Rollers).
Other notable awards include the following:
- Best Documentary The Oath, directed by Laura Poitras.
- Best Film Not Playing at a Theater Near You Littlerock, directed by Mike Ott.
- Festival Genius Audience Award Waiting For Superman, directed by Davis Guggenheim.
The Gotham Awards are considered one of the early awards predictors for the Oscars. Last year The Hurt Locker won Best Feature Film and Best Ensemble Performance, and went on to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards.
The show also took time to honor Anne Hathaway, Hilary Swank, and Robert Duvall.

Ever since the first footage of the film crept it’s way through the tubes of the internets, fanboys everywhere have been clammoring for more of James Gunn’s upcoming super hero comedy Super, and it looks like we’re finally going to have a date to drool over.
In keeping with his constant fan service, Gunn gave us the scoop on his official blog, as well as reaching out for people to request the film in their towns.
It’s true: SUPER will be opening on April 1st, 2011. That first week we will be in only Los Angeles and New York. However, on the following week, April 8, 2011, we will be in fifteen to twenty of the twenty-five biggest markets in the United States. Around that same time, we will also be available on VOD. And, after that, only God knows – perhaps more cities, perhaps not. It depends a lot on what you guys demand and want.
There you have it. And yes, if you live in a small town and want to see Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page, Liv Tyler, Kevin Bacon, Nathan Fillion, and Michael Rooker in this hilariously violent super hero comedy, be sure to keep an eye out and demand that it comes to you as soon as you can.

Even though Heroes started out strong and then took a decidedly bad turn, that isn’t stopping NBC from going back to the superhero genre and trying it again. This time around they’ve got a new series called The Cape which seems, at least from what we’ve seen so far, to be pretty interesting.
Adding more fuel to the fire we’ve got a new promo for the show to share with you today. In it we see reluctant hero David Lyons as Vince Faraday, an honest cop on a corrupt police force who, after finding himself framed for a series of murders and presumed dead, transforms himself into The Cape to seek justice.
Gotta say this looks pretty good. We’ll be looking forward to watching when the show premieres on January 9th. In the meantime, check out the new promo after the jump.

Rockstar is a name within the video game industry that, to say the least, carries a lot of weight. First and foremost is the credit that must be given to Rockstar for the Grand Theft Auto series, one of the most popular franchises in the past two console generations.
Alongside that comes Red Dead Redemption, the blockbuster old west open world game of this past year. But Rockstar isn’t limited to only open world action as they have shown us with their work on the “film noir love story” Max Payne 2. These hits alongside other critical and commercial darlings like Oni, Bully and Midnight Club have all put Rockstar in the forefront of the gaming market.
Now, Rockstar has revealed the newest installment to their family of blockbusters with L.A. Noire. In the trailer below, this game looks to keep a serious and gritty tone without the somewhat stereotypical Rockstar satire. Knowing how Rockstar handles character building and story, this seems like a great opportunity for them to tackle the much underused Noire genre.
From what we can see, the animation and voice acting are already top notch, especially from Aaron Staton of Mad Men fame who is lending his voice to lead character Cole Phelps.
Take a peek below at the first trailer for L.A. Noire which is coming to both the XBox 360 and PlayStation 3 in the first half of 2011.

It’s a pretty big decision to choose the host of The Academy Awards every year. There have been some epic hosts in the past, and some pretty bad ones. One thing is for sure, it’s going to be hard to top last year’s picks of Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin. It seems like the Academy has made their choice, however, as word is coming out that James Franco and Anne Hathaway are currently booked for the event. Here’s the official press release.
“James Franco and Anne Hathaway personify the next generation of Hollywood icons— fresh, exciting and multi-talented. We hope to create an Oscar broadcast that will both showcase their incredible talents and entertain the world on February 27,” said Oscar telecast producers Bruce Cohen and Don Mischer. “We are completely thrilled that James and Anne will be joining forces with our brilliant creative team to do just that.”
Franco, who currently can be seen in “127 Hours,” will be making his second appearance on an Oscar telecast. His other film credits include “Eat, Love, Pray,” “Date Night,” “Milk” and “Pineapple Express.” Franco is also known for his portrayals of Harry Osborn in the “Spider-Man” trilogy.

John Irvin’s (Hamburger Hill & The Dogs of War) 1998 HBO film When Trumpets Fade is an intense, brutally honest look at front line combat at the closing end of World War II. As the German Army is in full retreat towards its own borders, American infantry units (primarily the U.S. 28th “Keystone” Div. of the Pennsylvanian National Guard) converge on the Hurtgen Forest, Germany’s romantic hunting ground which borders Belgium in the late autumn of 1944.
Ron Eldard stars as reluctant anti-hero David Manning who is the sole survivor of a failed attack against the German lines at the beginning of the film. The supporting cast include Zak Orth (Pvt. Warren “Sandy” Sanderson), Frank Whaley (Medic Toby Chamberlain), Dylan Bruno (Sgt. Patrick Talbot), Devon Gummersall (Pvt. Andrew Lonnie), Dan Futterman (Pvt. Doug Despin), Steven Petrarca (Pvt. Sam Baxter), Dwight Yoakam (Lt. Col. George Rickman), and Timothy Olyphant (Lt. Terrence Lukas).
Manning shirks most responsibilities and has a hatred for anyone in authority. Manning is viewed by his fellow soldiers as an irresponsible individual who fails to conform to military protocol. His commanding officer Capt. Roy Pritchett (Martin Donovan) believes that Manning has what it takes to lead men and promotes Manning to Sgt. and orders him to take command of a new squad of fresh faced troops who are heading to the front as replacements.

Sometimes, at least in the minds of fans, the line between a character and the actor who portrays that character can become blurred. Often you will see fans referring to their favorite actor as the character from the movie they love.
Sadly, that affliction doesn’t seem completely confined to the fans. Apparently, some actors have that problem as well. Or, in the case of one Daniel Radcliffe and his relationship with a certain young wizard, the situation is slightly different.
Having some trouble understanding what I mean? Well, perhaps this video from Funny or Die will help you out? In it, Daniel Radcliffe explains that he isn’t, in fact, the actor portraying Harry Potter. Instead, he’s Harry Potter playing the role of actor Daniel Radcliffe.
Still confused? Well, click through and perhaps all will be illuminated.

Despite the lack of actual zombies, I think that this episode stands as my favorite thus far. The episode showed us time and time again that it is our empathy for our fellow man that ultimately makes us human.
Lots of difficult decisions were made this hour, and we were introduced to a serious game-changer toward the end of the episode. It kind of reminded me of Lost, when season 2 began with a peek inside the hatch, and our minds were blown with all the new possibilities the hatch introduced. More on that later, though.
Dale is certainly shaping up to be an important central character. Up until this episode, he was indispensable because of his cache of odds and ends that have proved valuable to the group. Now he emerges as a steady calming influence and a voice of reason within the group. Since he has no family members influencing his decisions, he is able to provide objective input when the group faces some of those tough choices. More and more the group seems to gravitate toward him for advice.
In this episode we saw Dale do the following:

I remember my first video camera. It was kinda big and the quality wasn’t really that great but still, it was all mine. I used it to create what I thought were some pretty cool little movies using my friends and kids from the neighborhood. I’ll bet Peter Jackson must be feeling a bit like I did today considering he’s got some new video cameras as well.
That’s right tech and film buffs, Mr. Jackson has gone ahead and purchased 30 new Red Epic 3D cameras so he can use them to film The Hobbit. Of course, these 5K resolution cameras are a bit nicer than the one I used all those years ago. Each camera package sports a host of cutting edge features including the EPIC-M camera body itself, titanium mount, 5-inch touchscreen LCD, REDmote, four batteries, a four-pack of 128-GB SSD cards to capture video onto and a charger. Total cost per package? $58,000.
The folks at Red expect to being making the cameras by hand starting next month and have them to Jackson in time for him to start filming The Hobbit next February. If any of the rest of you want to get your hands on one of these babies, I guess you’ll just have to wait in line.
Of course, the other bit of news we can deduce from this purchase is that The Hobbit will be shot in 3D. Do we like that? Hard to say. I guess, as always, we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
