Little Red Riding Hood is a story that has been reshaped and revised for hundreds of years. It has been touched by the hands of Charles Perrault, the Brothers Grimm and more recently by computer animation in Hoodwinked. Only a red cape, a grandmother, a wolf and the woods are necessary to deem a story a retelling of this classic fable. Catherine Hardwicke’s Red Riding Hood contains all of these elements, but little beyond these symbols exist to connect her story to its more classical narrative.

In this rendition, the girl cloaked in red is no longer a child, but now a young woman. She lives in a medieval village that is isolated from the outside world because of an evil creature that haunts and torments the town. Monthly, during each full moon, the townsmen sacrifice their finest livestock to keep the beast’s murderous tendencies dormant. Violence still erupts, though, and a young woman is slaughtered. The victim’s inconsolable sister is Valerie (Amanda Seyfried) and the rightful owner of the nearly blood red cloak. Her grief for her deceased sister is immense, but her ultimate torment comes from the agony of a star-crossed romance with a man that she cannot have.

Peter, played by Shiloh Fernandez, is that one true love. He is a dangerous and handsome woodcutter, destined to be poor, but consistent in his broody sex appeal. Tragically, she is betrothed to Henry (Max Irons). Henry is an amicable, attractive and quite wealthy fellow, but far too passive and decent to win Valerie’s heart. She has no fire for him, but his love to her remains true. Basically, just think of Team Edward and Team Jacob and nearly all of the details regarding the love triangle will be explained.

Those who watch NBC comedies Parks & Recreation, Community and Saturday Night Live know that some of the considered “favorites” of those shows consist of Donald Glover, Andy Samberg, Bill Hader, and Aubrey Plaza. Sure, there are a few others, but now we’re getting all of these names in one place with the new indie comedy The Hand Job.

From Variety:

Hader’s wife, Maggie Carey, is set to write and make her feature directorial debut on the coming-of-age story; Plaza will star as a type-A valedictorian who’s determined to lose her virginity before leaving for college. Project does not have a start date yet, as financing is still coming together.

In addition, TV veterans Connie Britton (“Friday Night Lights”) and Alia Shawkat (“Arrested Development”) have joined the ensemble, while Plaza’s “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” co-stars Johnny Simmons and Mae Whitman have come aboard to provide comedic support.

So as if the list of stars wasn’t enough with NBC’s top four, they’re adding two Arrested Development alumni to the mix. This could just be the indie comedy (and hopefully more) of the year.

We’re just hoping they keep the title.

It seems like just a few months ago, we were reporting that despite how the Research in Motion (RIM) Blackberry devices seem to be lagging behind popular smart phones like the iPhone 4 and the various Android-powered smartphones like the Droid 2 and Droid Incredible, RIM somehow managed to hang onto it’s market dominance in the U.S.

What a difference a few months can make. For the first time ever, Android has taken the number one spot in the U.S. Market, with nearly one third (31.2%) of all  U.S. smartphones running Google’s Android OS as of January 2011. This is according to a study released Monday by comScore. Android managed to best the BlackBerry share of 30.4% of American smart phone owners, as well as the popular Apple iOS and easily trounced the new kid on the block, Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7.

The second annual PAX East is this weekend, and while badges may be 100% sold out for the convention, you’ll find everything you need to know right here, since the team at The Flickcast will be there to report the latest, greatest, and best in gaming. Last year the expo was incredible, and this year should be no exception.

Along with the show floor, panels, nightly concerts, and everything else going on at the convention center, one of the great things about PAX East is all the meet ups that go on. Here’s some things to look out for this weekend if you’re attending.

For a good amount of time, there was some worry that Robert De Niro was going the way of Dustin Hoffman where he stopped going after meaty or serious roles, only to focus on easy paychecks and “fun” projects.

With his recent return to the Fockers franchise, and his laughably bad performance in Machete, we were starting to worry if the once-amazing actor was lost forever. Now we see he may be coming towards the light once again, as he’s got second billing in Relativity Media’s upcoming sci-fi thriller Limitless.

In it, De Niro plays Carl Van Loon, a mysterious businessman who knows more than Bradley Cooper’s Eddie Morra about his own new abilities, all thanks to a pill that grants him limitless power.

Last week may have had a few decent moments, but having someone like Miley Cyrus host Saturday Night Live will only get you so far. That’s why we’re all pretty excited to see Zach Galifiniakis return for a second time this weekend to host the show.

Nobody was sure if we’d see Zach again on the show, let alone this soon, as his last hosting gig didn’t go off as smoothly as it could have. The episode was full of awkward moments and missed jokes, but it seems that Lorne and the gang are ready to give the comedian a mulligan, and welcome him back with open arms.

In promoting this Saturday’s episode, both Zach and regular funnyman Andy Samberg recorded the typical TV spots for the network. We’ve got the whole list of them strung together, thanks to HULU.

As expected, Apple late yesterday released the latest version of its operating system for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, collectively known as iOS. This update brings the version of iOS to 4.3.

Important additions with this update include Apple’s new Personal Hotspot feature, which is now available on GSM versions of the iPhone 4. Previously, it had only been available to customers using Verizon’s CDMA iPhone. In addition, now available in iOS is AirPlay support for third-party apps.

This update is compatible with the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad, Apple TV and the third and fourth-generation iPod touch models. For full details on the update, head over to Apple’s website. If you do update, let us know how it goes in the comments.

As of yet, this update isn’t available for the Verizon iPhone 4. However, we expect that to drop in the next few days. At least we hope so or a few members of the staff are going to be a little cranky.

As a part of the March 10th system update for the PlayStation 3 (v3.60), PlayStation users will be allowed cloud game save support. This feature will currently only be available to PlayStation Plus subscribers, PlayStation’s incentive based online subscription program which up until now has allowed for game discounts as well as features like Hulu.

According to IGN, a Playstation representative has stated, “We haven’t announced any plans for it to be available to everyone at this time.” While this doesn’t rule out free users being able to do this in the future, the space and bandwidth aren’t going to come free and a feature like this is definitely an incentive for hardcore gamers to subscribe to avoid loss of their game data from a system crash.

They also announced that 150mb of data with a maximum of 1000 data files will be allowed per PlayStation Plus account.

It will be interesting to hear if this affects PlayStation Plus subscription rates moving forward.

That’s right this week bring an all new episode of The Flickcast. On this week’s show Chris and Matt take on another bunch of new and recurring topics to amuse, entertain and try to keep you awake for at least thirty to forty minutes.

Some of the things discussed this week include SXSW, Emerald City Comic Con, new Tomb Raider reboot, Wonder Woman TV show casting, Superman’s mom and dad, trailers for Limitless and James Gunn’s Super and a whole lot more. And yes, there’s even a mention or two of Charlie Sheen. Sorry, couldn’t help it.

Of course, your hosts also made some picks this week including Matt’s pick of the Re-Animator trilogy featuring Jeffrey Combs and Chris’ pick of the 2002′s Road to Perdition featuring Tom Hanks, Jude Law and pre-Bond Daniel Craig.

It is almost becoming laughable how many things seem to be going wrong with the Broadway production of Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark. We’ve already been through heartbreak several times, whether it was about Alan Cumming and Evan Rachel Wood leaving the show, to the budget getting slashed in half, to countless actors being hurt during live productions. Things just don’t seem to be going well at all for the first-ever Broadway musical about a superhero.

Time to add two more pieces of bad news to that list, as it’s been rumored that Julie Taymor, one-half of the genius behind the whole production, may be asked to leave the production, due to producers having serious issues with some of the aforementioned problems.

The creative staff have been given a list of rules and health regulations that need to be implemented in order for the show to continue to its opening night, which was originally slated for Monday of next week (March 15th). Now it seems that that, too, may be changing.

Stop us if you’ve heard this before. Monsters, werewolves, vampires, and demons–they’re all real. They just prey in the shadows and hope that nobody finds out they exist. It’s up to Dylan Dog (played by former Superman Brandon Routh) to keep them in line and preserve the balance between good and evil.

Sure, it’s a little bit Constantine and a little bit Hellboy, but how often is it that you get a former Superman and a former Jimmy Olsen together again in pretty much the same roles? Not often enough, is the correct answer. Here’s the full synopsis for those still clinging to hope.

DYLAN DOG: DEAD OF NIGHT is a new horror/comedy film based on one of the world’s most popular comics (60 million copies worldwide). Brandon Routh stars as Dylan Dog, world famous private investigator specializing in affairs of the undead. His PI business card reads “No Pulse? No Problem.” Armed with an edgy wit and carrying an arsenal of silver and wood-tipped bullets, Dylan must track down a dangerous artifact before a war ensues between his werewolf, vampire and zombie clients living undercover in the monster infested backstreets of New Orleans.

The film was in development hell (pun intended) for quite some time, but it looks like it’s finally making its way into theaters on April 29th. Check out the full trailer after the jump.
