Interview: John DiMaggio On Playing Joker In ‘Batman: Under The Red Hood’

by Matt Raub, Jul 30 2010 // 10:00 AM

All week long, we’ve been bringing you coverage and interviews with the people who brought us DC’s newest animated film, Batman: Under the Red Hood. We spoke with star Bruce Greenwood, who talked about working with the talented John DiMaggio, who fans know best as the voice of Futurama’s Bender.

John has lent his voice to other DC properties, such as Batman: Brave and Bold and Superman: Doomsday, but now he’s taking on one of the biggest roles in DC’s rogues gallery: the Joker.

John brings a quiet insanity to the character, similar to what Ledger brought to the role, but differing from Mark Hammil’s vaudevillian approach to the character. And being the killer of a teenage boy, he needs all the insanity he can bring.

Check out our interview with DiMaggio after the jump, as he discusses his doubts in his performance, as well as his dedication to the fans for resurrecting Futurama. Batman: Under the Red Hood is currently in stores.

SDCC10 Extra: Matt Groening and David X. Cohen On the Future of ‘Futurama’ and What they Love About Comic-Con

by Jennifer Tomooka, Jul 29 2010 // 11:00 AM

To the relief and delight of fans everywhere, Futurama finally returned to Comedy Central in June, with an anticipated season of 26 new episodes that will air through the rest of 2010 and into 2011. Riding the wave of elation and acclaim (what Comic-Con wouldn’t be complete without the presence of Groening) Matt Groening (Creator) and David X. Cohen (Executive Producer) shared their ideas for the future of Futurama and what they love most about being in San Diego for Comic-Con.

Groening thanked the fans who are devoted to the show and attributed Futurama‘s return to their persistence. He also teased fans with the vague spoiler of two characters kissing in an upcoming episode, but that it will be completely unexpected and the audience won’t see it coming (anyone want to start a betting pool?).

Fans who are patiently waiting for the early seasons of not only Futurama and The Simpsons to be released on Blu-Ray are going to be waiting for a while. There aren’t any current plans for their release, but they will be available on Laser-Disc very soon!

As for the future of the show, Groening stated that back when he was developing the show with David X. Cohen, they made a list of all the things they wanted to write about, and they still haven’t exhausted that list. Additionally, he revealed that there aren’t any current plans to do direct to DVD movies, but that the ultimate goal would be to develop and release a full-length film that will be released in theaters.

Comedy Central Resurrects ‘Futurama’

by Matt Raub, Jun 9 2009 // 8:28 PM

It’s official: Comedy Central has picked up the rights to renew 20th Century Fox Television’s Futurama for 26 new episodes, six years after getting initially cancelled by the Fox network. In a recent EW interview with a 20th Century Fox spokesman, they say the DVD sales and reruns have had a “blockbuster” performance:

“When we brought back Family Guy several years ago, everyone said that it was a once in a lifetime thing — that canceled series stay canceled and cannot be revived,” 20th Century Fox TV Co-Chairman Gary Newman and Dana Walden said in a joint statement. “But Futurama was another series that fans simply demanded we bring back, and we couldn’t have been happier when Matt and David agreed that there were many more stories yet to tell.”

Both creators David X Cohen and Matt Groening were of course ecstatic about the news. Said Groening: ”We’re thrilled Futurama is coming back. We now have only 25,766 episodes to make before we catch up with Bender and Fry in the year 3000.”

Between this mistake and the mistake of canceling Family Guy, maybe this means Fox TV will think twice about axing an animated series, or even a live action series (Could we see the resurrection of Greg the Bunny?). You can currently catch reruns of Futurama on Comedy Central throughout the week and you can even pre-order the complete box set inside of a limited Bender head from Amazon today!
