‘Call of Duty: Black Ops Annihilation’ Content Pack Coming to XBox Live in June

by Chris Ullrich, Jun 16 2011 // 10:00 AM

When you’ve got the best selling FPS video game of 2010, what do you do for an encore? Why, keep releasing expansion and map packs of course to enhance the experience even further.

That’s just what Activision is  doing with the announcement today of Annihilation, a brand new content pack for Call of Duty: Black Ops, that’s set for release for XBox 360 on 28 June.

Annihilation will include four new multiplayer maps “Hangar 18,” “Drive-In,” “Silo” and “Hazard.” There will also be a new add-on for the popular Zombie mode, in which players must defend themselves against hordes of the undead. Of course. Who doesn’t love zombies?

“With Annihilation, Black Ops fans will get four exciting and unique multiplayer settings with Hangar 18, Drive-In, Silo and Hazard,” said Treyarch Studio Head, Mark Lamia. “Players will also enjoy an all-new Zombies experience, Shangri-La, an exotic and mysterious map filled with deadly traps, dark secrets and innovative gameplay that will challenge even the most daring Zombie hunters.” Sounds cool.

Of course, as you already know, Call of Duty: Black Ops is a huge success having grossed over $1 Billion worldwide. With content packs like Annihilation and previous releases First Strike and Escalation, it’s popularity is sure to continue. The only thing that might displace it, or at least knock it down a few pegs, is the upcoming release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 — which I got to check out recently at E3.

I’m sure there’s room at the top for both of these games. More info on Call of Duty: Black Ops Annihilation as we get it.

‘Call of Duty: Black Ops – Escalation’ Map Pack Coming In May

by Chris Ullrich, Apr 11 2011 // 2:00 PM

It’s no secret that we like Call of Duty: Black Ops, you like Call of Duty: Black Ops and pretty much most gamers throughout the world like Call of Duty: Black Ops. It’s a huge game that’s sold extremely well and broken sales records pretty much everywhere it has been available.

Since the game’s release we’ve already seen one new add-on for it in the form of a new “First Strike” Map Pack. Now we can look forward to the next enhancement for the game with the announcement of the upcoming “Escalation” Map Pack. Available first to Xbox LIVE members on Tuesday May 3rd, “Escalation” is the second downloadable content pack for Call of Duty: Black Ops.

It contains 5 all-new maps including “Hotel,” where you’ll battle on the roof of a Cuban hotel and casino, a Russian “Zoo,” a WMD “Stockpile”, and “Convoy.” And what’s an update without some more zombies? Escalation will reportedly offer a new “Zombie experience,” with new playable characters.

No word yet on how much this new bunch of fun will cost but if you’re as big a fan of this game as we are, the cost probably won’t matter all that much. Unless, of course, it’s a hundred bucks or something. Then, we might have to reconsider.

‘WWE All Stars’ Reveals Path of Champions and Free DLC Honky Tonk Man

by John Carle, Mar 25 2011 // 9:00 AM

One of the most interesting aspects of THQ’s WWE game’s is their presentation and their storylines. Some have ultimate wrestling nerd nostalgia like when Edge and Christian reunited in SmackDown vs. Raw 2011 before they did on real WWE programming.

Others are completely out of the realm of reality (We all remember the video of Kurt Angle being magically transformed into a woman by Candice Michelle from a few years ago). With the completely over the top style of WWE All Stars, there is certainly some intrigue in to the presentation of its story modes.

Each of the three modes will consist of a 10 match tournament for the player, much in the style of fighting games like Mortal Kombat or Marvel vs. Capcom 3 where players will eventually reach their championship match against either the Undertaker (Legends path), Randy Orton (WWE Superstars path) or D-Generation X (Tag Team path). Here is what we know so far about these three different paths in WWE All Stars:

Path of Champions, WWE Legends – Undertaker

The World Heavyweight Championship is on the line at SummerSlam. Can you defeat 10 of WWE’s battle-hardened WWE Legends and defeat Undertaker? Paul Bearer welcomes you to his funeral parlor, as Undertaker emerges from a standing casket. He has a message for the player – “Rest in Peace!” There are plenty of surprises and more cutscenes along the way as you move your way up to face “The Phenom!”

‘Call of Duty: Black Ops’ Map Pack Preview – ‘First Strike’

by John Carle, Jan 18 2011 // 12:00 PM

While Call of Duty: Black Ops didn’t reign two years in a row as game of the year, that doesn’t mean we love it any less. After all, you don’t become one of the highest selling games of all time along with being the highest first day entertainment franchise in history if you aren’t a damn good game.  As previously announced, the first map pack titled “First Strike” will be coming first to the XBox 360 on February 1st before later being ported over to the PlayStation 3.

The “First Strike” Map Pack will include four traditional multiplayer maps as well as one additional Zombie mode map. While no information was given on the Zombie map other than its name Ascension, the trailer below gives a quick peek at the development behind and the layouts of the other four maps in this pack.

Kowloon takes place in a revamped layout of the Kowloon single player level. Having a very similar feel to the streets of Brazil from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Kowloon offers players their first and only opportunity to use a zip line to traverse through a level. This zip line looks like a quite risky venture as it will leave a player completely exposed and weaponless. The reward however is the ability to cross great distances of the map at tremendous speed.

Another unique map is Discovery. Taking place in an arctic research lab, Discovery shows what may be Call of Duty’s first steps towards destructible environments. In Discovery there is a choke point over the chasm that divides the level in half where players must cross a bridge to reach their opponents. This bridge can be destroyed with proper explosives. Imagine what this could do for the game with Red Faction style level physics on top of the already intense Call of Duty multiplayer.

Four New Characters Confirmed For ‘Marvel Vs. Capcom 3′

by John Carle, Nov 19 2010 // 9:00 AM

Yesterday we were able to finally confirm the release date as well as the content of the Special Edition of Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Included in that Special Edition will be download codes for two DLC characters, available four weeks after the release of the game.

These two characters are Shuma Gorath and Jill Valentine, both returning from their roles in Marvel vs. Capcom 2. New to the Marvel vs. Capcom 3 fold will be She-Hulk and Mega Man’s Zero.

Players have had few opportunities to play as She-Hulk with the only exception being her appearance in the classic PlayStation Fantastic Four game. Now she will bring her unique brand of powerhouse sexuality and humor to Marvel vs. Capcom 3.

Take a peek at the video below to see Jen Walters kicking butt and looking sassy doing it.

DLC Review: ‘Undead Nightmare’ for ‘Red Dead Redemption’ for XBox 360

by John Carle, Nov 1 2010 // 2:15 PM

We recently got the chance to get our first hands on with Red Dead Redemption’s DLC pack Undead Nightmare. Now, after its full release, Undead Nightmare has proven itself to be one of the most fun and valuable pieces of DLC to be released in recent memory.

The events of Undead Nightmare follow those of the regular Red Dead Redemption storyline so be warned. There are some minor spoilers about the fate of certain characters if you decide to play Undead Nightmare before going through the full RDR story.

Unlike some pieces of DLC like the quests in Fable II or The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion which add new missions to your current game, Undead Nightmare is its own separate story so players can skip back and forth between a regular Red Dead save file and an Undead save file without the two affecting each other. The only negative to this is certain items and steeds then don’t come back with John to Read Dead proper which is a shame since riding through the desert on the steed of War can make someone feel pretty bad ass.

After seeing the outbreak first hand, our hero heads out to find a cure only to find the undead plague has spread throughout the frontier with all cities being overrun and even animals being infected. After seeing bodies reanimate themselves from grizzly deaths, John uses his gun to put them back down with some well placed headshots. What follows is a screwed up path through memory lane as John encounters friends and acquaintances from Red Dead who are now all being struck by the zombie plague as he searches for a cure.

Hands-On: ‘Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare’ DLC

by John Carle, Oct 13 2010 // 10:00 AM

At the New York Comic Con, we were lucky enough to get a chance to step in to the closed off Rockstar booth and get exclusive hands on time with Rockstar’s Nick Patterson on the upcoming Undead Nightmare DLC pack for Red Dead Redemption. Now a lot of people have been vocal about the fact they didn’t think zombies belonged in the realistic Red Dead Redemption world. Well luckily for those people, it is a DLC pack that they aren’t required to purchase. For those a little more open minded about the plausibility of zombies coming back to unlife in the old west, Undead Nightmare is their golden ticket.

During our hands on, we got to experience one of the graveyard missions. In this instance, a player must go into a graveyard and set five coffins ablaze. In doing so, the undead awaken from the ground and try to take them down. Much like the classic zombie theme, headshots work best and players can be quickly overrun if not careful. One great addition is the use of the blunderbuss as a weapon that players can shoot looted pieces of the fallen undead with literally explosive results. The DLC pack has great visual additions like a constant fog over the land as well as new skins on the animals roaming the desert.

Though we only got a short time to play, it was a great demo that peeked our interest. Take a look at some screens below as well as the trailer. Stick close to the Flickcast for more on Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare as it closes in on its release.

Game Review: ‘Transformers: War for Cybertron’ Character and Map Pack DLC

by John Carle, Aug 3 2010 // 12:00 PM

Transformers: War for Cybertron has been one of the favorite licensed games in recent memory for us. Especially after seeing what Michael Bay did to the film franchise, it was great to see people who had a true appreciation for the source material get their hands on it and get to play around with the world.

At Comic-Con, we spoke to the game’s director Matt Tieger and he walked us through the now recently released DLC content that was announced at the Con. Make sure to check out the full interview with Tieger for more of his insight into the game.

The first thing you notice when playing the new content is the great variety of additional character models and loadouts for the game’s Multiplayer and Escalation mode. Classic favorites like Jazz, Demolisher and Shockwave make their return to the Transformers universe that were previously only available as pre-order bonuses while never before seen Scattershot and Onslaught make their way to Cybertron.

As expected from the high values of this production team, all the models look beautiful and do a great job of separating themselves from the others already on the battlefield. It is easy to spot these new characters in online play, especially the uniquely shaped head of Shockwave. These new models do a great job of preventing games that feel like the final fight in Transformers 2: Rise of the Fallen where Michael Bay’s horde of clone-like Decepticons cannot be told apart during the chaos.

SDCC10 Extra: ‘Transformers: War for Cybertron’ Developer Interview

by John Carle, Jul 30 2010 // 7:00 AM

At Comic-Con, we got the chance to sit down with Matt Tieger , one of the developers for Transformers: War for Cybertron and discuss his work on the game. Also, check out some screens and the trailer for the Transformers: War for Cybertron Map and Character Pack which was released this week for the XBox 360 and PlayStation 3 which features five new multiplayer character models and four new multiplayer maps.

The Flickcast: Activision just announced that we are going to be getting five new DLC characters and a map pack with four new maps for the game so obviously this is going to be a multiplayer focused DLC pack. Can you talk to us a little bit about why you wanted to do some DLC for this game?

Matt Tieger: What we do is we try and listen. We read the forums. We talk to Transformers fans. We talk to gamers. And we listen to all the things they were really excited about within the game and wanted more of, were hungry for more of and that’s what we put in this pack.

So, five new characters right, several new of those you know were pre-order characters and people were just rabid to get them so we listened and we put those in the pack. Shockwave, Jazz and Demolisher, all available in this DLC pack.

Lady Gaga Invades ‘DJ Hero’ and ‘Guitar Hero’ DLC

by John Carle, Jun 30 2010 // 3:00 PM

Activision has released two new pop themed DLC packs, one for DJ Hero and another for their Guitar Hero series, and headlining both is the ever outrageous Lady Gaga. Lately Activision has been embracing the popularity of Gaga as they have also had her song “Just Dance” as the focus of the DJ Hero 2 trailer that was released just in time for E3.

For DJ Hero, the Dance Party Mix Pack will include three mashups exclusive to the DJ Hero series. First will be a mix of Lady Gaga’s “Just Dance” along with the 80′s classic “Girl’s on Film” by Duran Duran. In addition, R & B vixen Rihanna lends her voice to DJ Hero as well with a beat juggle of her Top 40 hit “S.O.S.” while the lovely ladies of the Pussycat Dolls’ “Buttons” also makes a beat juggle appearance as well. Trailers of all three songs can be viewed after the jump.

Meanwhile on the Guitar Hero side of things, people’s living room garage band will finally be able to play Lady Gaga’s “Just Dance” (not a remix or mashup) with the Pop 1 Track Pack. Joining her will be one of Maroon 5′s earlier hits “This Love” and recent synth pop anthem “Fireflies” from Owl City.

The DJ Hero Dance Party Mix Pack is available on Xbox Marketplace for 640 Microsoft Points and the PlayStation Store for $7.99. All mixes are available as singles for the Wii for 300 Wii Points each.

The Pop 1 Track Pack will sell for 440 Microsoft Points on the XBox 360, $5.49 on the PlayStation Store and 550 Wii Points. All songs will be available individually for 160 Microsoft Points, $1.99 and 200 Wii Points respectively.

Check out previews of the DLC content after the break.
