Raimi & Cronenberg to Work Together on ‘The Knife Man’ Adaptation

by Sebastian Suchecki, Mar 15 2012 // 7:30 AM

It looks like two horror icons will be working together on a television adaptation of The Knife Man. The exciting part is the harshly grim nature of the subject matter fits right into what David Cronenberg (Scanners, The Fly) and Sam Raimi (The Evil Dead, Drag Me To Hell) are both best known for.

The Knife Man follows John Hunter, a man from humble Scottish origins,  who rose to become the most famous anatomist and surgeon of the eighteenth century. In an age when operations were crude, extremely painful and often fatal, Hunter rejected medieval traditions based on ancient Greek Orthodoxy to forge a revolution in surgery founded on pioneering scientific experiments.

Hunter’s scientific genius led him to become a central figure of the Enlightenment, which led him to be revered by fellow scientists and to become friendly with high society. Unfortunately, Hunter’s experiments required human corpses, and most were not donated. His tireless quest for human corpses immersed him deep in the sinister world of body-snatching.

Adrianne Palicki Joins ‘G.I. Joe: Cobra Strikes’

by Joe Gillis, Jul 1 2011 // 11:30 AM

Since her Wonder Woman TV series didn’t get picked up by NBC, it would appear the lovely Adrianne Palicki is available. No, not that kind of avilable. Sorry nerds. As if you’d have a chance anyway.

Instead, she’s available for more work and has reportendly signed on as the female lead in the upcoming G.I. Joe: Cobra Strikes. Palicki will take on the role of Lady Jane in the film, which already features Channing Tatum and Dwayne Johnson, who’s set to play Roadblock.

In other casting news for the sequel, Ray Park is expected back as Snake Eyes and Byung Hun-lee is expected back as Storm Shadow. The RZA has also recently joined the film in an as yet unknown role. The other major role still to be cast is that of Joe Colton, the original G.I. Joe.

Rumor has it that the studios is looking at Bruce Willis for that part, which is an obvious choice. He’ll do fine but perhaps there’s other actors that would work just as well? We’ll see and we’ll let you know as soon as we know.

NBC Announces Summer Schedule

by Heather Toshiko, Mar 22 2011 // 8:30 AM

Unlike the old days of just three (or four) networks when new programming was released in the Fall, ran for several months and then we got reruns all Summer until Fall came around again, we now get new shows pretty much all year round. Case in point is NBC’s announcement of its new Summer schedule.

The new schedule includes the return of America’s Got Talent, the second season of Jerry Seinfeld’s The Marriage Ref and the premieres of three new series including It’s Worth What? hosted by Cedric the Entertainer, Still Standing and Love in the Wild. In addition, new shows such as The Voice and the return of Law & Order: LA as well as the final seasons of Law & Order: Criminal Intent and Friday Night Lights will also have a place in the Summer schedule.

Just in case you are not impressed with NBC’s Summer schedule and don’t think the network cares about Summer, check this out: “We want to make it clear that NBC considers the summer as an important part of its overall season and will continue to offer a varied lineup of original programs,” NBC entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt said. Winning.

NBC’s new Summer season kicks off on May 31st with the return of America’s Got Talent. For more details, check out the official press release from NBC after the jump.

Adrianne Palicki Cast As Wonder Woman In New TV Series

by Matt Raub, Feb 17 2011 // 7:30 AM

It’s been speculated for months, even before the idea of David E. Kelley’s Wonder Woman TV series was even on the table. But now, the Amazon Warrior finally has an actress to play her in the upcoming show: Friday Night Lights star Adrianne Palicki. From THR:

The project, from David E. Kelley Prods. and Warner Bros. TV, is a retelling of the DC Comics title in which Wonder Woman (Palicki), a.k.a. Diana Prince, tries to balance her life as a vigilante crime fighter, a successful corporate executive and a modern woman.

Palicki, who appeared as Tyra Collete in the NBC/DirecTV series Friday Night Lights, stars in the upcoming Red Dawn. Her most recent series regular role was Fox’s short-lived Texas-set drama Lone Star, which aired only two episodes last fall.

So here we are, over a decade later after names like Joel Silver, Joss Whedon, and plenty more have had their turn trying to invigorate the project in either film or TV, Boston Legal creator David E. Kelley is the one to finally bring the project to life.

Expect to see some publicity shots of Palicki in the (hopefully) classic Wonder Woman outfit soon enough, as the plan is to pitch the show to the network for next year’s pilot season.

Every Episode of SNL Coming to Instant Netflix Plus More

by Matt Raub, Sep 27 2010 // 10:00 AM

Just this weekend, Saturday Night Live returned with its 36th season to a 15 percent ratings bump from last season’s premiere. Amy Pohler and Katy Perry were the guests, along with a whole slew of former cast members dropping by throughout the show.

The premiere had its funny moments. But one of the main things the episode also accomplished was to make the audience look back and fondly remember the classic episodes of the series over its rich 35 year lifespan. Fortunetely, we don’t have to scrounge YouTube or Hulu for old episodes as Netflix and NBC have signed a deal to get every episode of SNL available on Netflix’s streaming service.

But that’s not all as according to the press releasing announcing the deal, along with SNL, we’ll also be treated to tons of other NBC Universal properties coming to the service.

Episodes from every season of NBC’s signature comedy franchise “Saturday Night Live,” including day-after broadcast of the upcoming 2010, 2011 and 2012 seasons plus hundreds of episodes from the first 35 years of “SNL.”

Every episode from the last season of the multiple Emmy® Award-winning series “30 Rock,” “The Office” and “Law & Order: SVU,” as well as earlier seasons of those shows renewed for streaming from Netflix under the current deal.

All prior seasons – and eventually next year’s final season – of “Friday Night Lights,” the small-town drama surrounding high-school football in Dillon, Tex.

Five Actors Reportedly In the Running For ‘Captain America’ Role

by Chris Ullrich, Feb 24 2010 // 1:00 PM

Even though filming is still some time away, recently director Joe Johnston told MTV Splashpage a casting decision on who would portray Captain America in The First Avenger “was weeks away.” Well, weeks have gone by and according to Deadline Hollywood, the list of actors for the titular role has been narrowed down to five finalists.

The five front-runners for the role of Captain America are, according to the site, Chace Crawford (Gossip Girl), John Krasinski (The Office), Scott Porter (Friday Night Lights), Mike Vogel (Cloverfield) and Michael Cassidy (Smallville). All five actors have reportedly agreed to test deals with Johnston and Marvel Studios to try out for the role.

Not only must these actor agree to test for the role, if eventually cast, they must also sign for nine other options, including potential sequels to The First Avenger. This makes sense considering the upcoming Marvel movies and their desire to team them all for a potential Avengers movie in the future. Still, that’s a lot to negotiate.

Of course, fans everywhere have their personal favorites and I we have ours. Picking from this list as if these were the only choices, our first choice would be Smallville‘s Michael Cassidy. He’s able to do the action as well as being a pretty good actor as well, so he’d be good for the part.

Sadly, our favorite choice of all and not on this list, Joel Gretsch (The 4400, V), is probably too old now, even though he would be great in the part. No matter who they choose, let’s hope they take this movie as seriously and do as great a job on it as Marvel did with Iron Man. Cap deserves no less.

Who do you think should play Captain America in The First Avenger?

New Promo for NBC’s ‘Mercy’

by Chris Ullrich, Aug 26 2009 // 1:00 PM

michelle-trachtenberg-mercyWe’ve been following some of NBC’s new Fall shows pretty closely here at The Flickcast. One of the ones that seems pretty interesting is a hostpital show called Mercy. What makes this one more interesting than the crop of other medical shows out there? Good question. Read on.

Mercy has a couple interesting things going for it. First, its told from the perspective of nurses. And not just any nurses, but a trio of brash, confident and compassionate babes including Iraq war vet Veronica, played by Taylor Schilling, and newcomer Chloe, played by the delightful Michelle Trachtenberg of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Plus, the show is created and exec. produced by Liz Heldens of Friday Night Lights and Gretchen Berg & Aaron Harberts of Pushing Daises, two other quality shows.

Does all this mean Mercy will be a sure-fire hit? Not necessarily. But with all these elemets in place, it sure has a good chance. Mercy premieres on Wednesday, September 23rd at 8/7C. Until then, be sure to check out this latest promo after the jump.

New Promos for ‘Trauma’, ‘Parenthood’ and ‘Community’

by Chris Ullrich, Jun 23 2009 // 4:15 PM

community-show

The good people at NBC have seen fit to send us some promos for three of their upcoming Fall tv series. The shows, Parenthood, Community and Trauma, each have recognizable and likeable casts, good production value and look to be worth checking out. Here’s a bit about each show.

Parenthood – From Imagine Entertainment’s Ron Howard and Brian Grazer, writer/executive producer Jason Katims (Friday Night Lights), and Emmy Award-winning director Thomas Schlamme (The West Wing) comes this contemporary re-imagining of the blockbuster film Parenthood, focusing on the everyday challenges that modern families face while raising children and starting over.

traumaCommunity – From Emmy Award-winning directors Joe and Anthony Russo (Arrested Development) comes a smart comedy about higher education…and lower expectations. Community focuses on a band of misfits, at the center of which is a fast-talkin’ lawyer whose degree has been revoked (Joel McHale, The Soup). They form a study group and, in Breakfast Club fashion, end up learning a lot more about themselves than they do about their course work.

Trauma – From executive producer Peter Berg (Friday Night Lights), Trauma is the first high-octane medical franchise to live exclusively in the field, where the real action is. Trauma is an intense, action-packed look at one of the most dangerous medical professions in the world: first responder paramedics.

Be sure to check out all three promos after the break. For all the latest news on NBC’s upcoming Fall schedule, go here.
