Jim Caviezel to Play Stallone’s Villain in ‘The Tomb’

by Sebastian Suchecki, Feb 21 2012 // 7:30 AM

The Tomb is quickly shaping up to be an Expendables-level action extravaganza. With the casting of Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzennegger as the protagonists of The Tomb, many foresaw issues with finding a villainous actor great enough to compete with the two most recognizable action stars on the planet.

With casting revealed by producer Mark Canton (300, Immortals) on The Mathew Aaron show, any questions as to whether they’d find a good enough actor to counter Stallone and Schwarzennegger can now be quelled.  In a great bit of casting, “[Jim] Caviezel will be playing the role of the warden of the prison in which Schwarzenegger & Stallone attempt to escape from.”

The Tomb follows Ray Breslin (Stallone) who is the world’s foremost authority on structural security. He’s analyzed every high security prison and has gained a vast array of survival skills. But all Ray’s ingenuity and knowledge are about to be put to work in the most challenging test he’s ever faced: escaping from the master prison of his own design.

Box Office: ‘Immortals’ Proves What It’s Made Of

by Sebastian Suchecki, Nov 14 2011 // 7:30 AM

This is one of those weekends that proves the merit of the American moviegoer. Will people fill theaters to go see Adam Sandler get in a fistfight with himself dressed in drag? Or will they go see a biopic of one of the most important men in US history?

Looks like it was neither, as people would rather see the next Superman take out Mickey Rourke while a bunch of Greek gods watch from above (not to knock the movie, it was entertaining). Opening in just over 3,000 screens, Immortals made it to the #1 spot this weekend with a reach of $32 million in the domestic box office, and over $60 million worldwide.

Sadly, coming in at a (too) close second, Sandler’s Jack and Jill managed to pull in $26 million this weekend, averaging roughly $7,500 per screen. In second and third are last weekend’s top hits, Puss in Boots and Tower Heist, which are still making strong money.

First Images From Relativity’s Untitled ‘Snow White Project’ Surface

by Matt Raub, Oct 10 2011 // 10:00 AM

Fairy tales are all the rage these days. Between two brand new series starting on both ABC and NBC later this month about mystical worlds, and the ever-growing popularity of vampires and zombies, people are loving fantasy lately.

Which makes sense why two studios are racing to the finish line with exciting new projects involving the Snow White universe. Twilight star Kristen Stewart is making some moves over at Universal with Snow White and the Huntsman, while Relativity Media is now pushing some new images of their untitled Snow White Film.

For those who still need help differentiating the two projects, here’s Relativity’s breakdown of their film.

Visionary director Tarsem Singh (Immortals) rewrites fairy tale history as a wicked enchantress (Julia Roberts) schemes and scrambles for control of a spirited orphan’s (Lily Collins) throne and the attention of a charming prince (Armie Hammer). When Snow White’s beauty wins the heart of the prince that she desperately pursues, the Queen banishes her to the forest, where a ravening man-eating beast hungrily awaits.

Rescued by a band of diminutive highway robbers, Snow White grows into an indomitable young woman determined to take back her realm from the treacherous Queen. With the support of her subjects, she roars into action in an epic battle that blends spectacle, magic and contemporary humor in Singh’s signature, jaw-dropping visual style.

We’ve got a whole slew of new images for you to check out after the jump, which will have to hold you over while Relativity decides on a release date (and a title) for the film.

SDCC11: Teaser Poster and Stills for ‘Immortals’

by Nat Almirall, Jul 23 2011 // 1:00 PM

One thing you can expect from a Tarsem Singh movie is a heap o’ interesting visuals. Combine that with Greek mythology, add some broth and a potato, and boy, you got yourself Singh’s latest, Immortals. Better yet, you got two stills and an epic poster, courtesy of Comic-Con.

Immortals stars Henry Cavill (Superman: Man of Steel) as Theseus, a stonemason who gathers a group of followers to take down the vicious King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke), a brutal tyrant on his own mad quest to destroy humanity and overthrow the very gods themselves.

In his quest, Theseus is aided by the oracle Phaedra (Slumdog Millionaire’s Freida Pinto) and a slave (Stephen Dorff). It may sound a bit Spartacus and Troy-y, but we’ll be watching to see what Tarsem does with 3D—coming from the guy who directed The Cell and The Fall, the pairing seems obvious.

Immortals is scheduled to open November 11, 2011. You can check out more photos and the poster after the jump.

New Trailer for ‘Immortals’ with Henry Cavill Arrives

by Joe Gillis, Jun 27 2011 // 11:15 AM

We’ve been following the upcoming film Immortals on and off for months. And today, we’ve got a brand new trailer for the film to share with you that expands on the earlier, shorter version.

In it we get a lot more of the story and get to see Henry ‘soon to be Superman” Cavill in action. Here’s more about the film’s story from the official synopsis:

The brutal and bloodthirsty King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke) and his murderous Heraklion army are rampaging across Greece in search of the long lost Bow of Epirus. With the invincible Bow, the king will be able to overthrow the Gods of Olympus and become the undisputed master of his world.

As village after village is obliterated, a stonemason named Theseus (Henry Cavill) vows to avenge the death of his mother in one of Hyperion’s raids. When Theseus meets the Sybelline Oracle, Phaedra (Freida Pinto), her disturbing visions of the young man’s future convince her that he is the key to stopping the destruction. With her help, Theseus assembles a small band of followers and embraces his destiny in a final desperate battle for the future of humanity.

Check out the trailer for the film after the jump. Immortals arrives in theaters on November 11th.

Trailer Tuesdays: 10 Pounds of Epic in a Five Pound Bag

by Eric Medina, May 3 2011 // 12:00 PM

Cinematographer Jack Cardiff, 1929

There is only one word to describe the multitude of trailers rolling out this week: epic.  Stunning visual effects, powerful film scores, and, most importantly, long run-times, are what make audiences flock to the theater summer after summer.

Honestly, it was hard for me to narrow down this week’s selection, but I have included as much as possible.  This week also brings two new features designed to break up the monotony of Hollywood blockbusters.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II

As a fan, I couldn’t be more excited about this trailer.  I literally watched it three times in a row.  Honestly, as much as I love these books, I have always been cautious of the film franchise.  Terrible pacing and poor character development were what was normally found in the Harry Potter films year after year, almost as if they were never designed to stand alone, but made exclusively for people who where already fan of the books.

But splitting this last book into two parts was a brilliant move.  Even though it was most likely purely a marketing move to milk this franchise as long as possible, having two feature films has finally given the screenplay the room it needed to breath and to take the time to explore the relationships between the characters that make this fantastic world believable.

Looking directly at the trailer itself, we find it properly utilizing this new “epic trailer” structure that has been emerging recently, which consists of a 90 second theatrical trailer which ends with a dip in the music and poignant one-liner, only to explode into the final minute of epic montage footage set to the most powerful moments in the score, purely for the sake of being flashy.  It is almost like the trailer is saying, ” This movie is too epic.”

Check Out the First Full Trailer for ‘Immortals’

by Chris Ullrich, Apr 27 2011 // 1:00 PM

We’ve been following the progress of director Tarsem Singh’s Immortals for some time now. Of course, one of the reasons is that soon-to-be-Superman Henry Cavill is the star of the film. However, that isn’t the only reason and only one of the reasons the film looks pretty cool. The others you can find out by watching the brand new trailer for the film just released today.

In it we get our first good look at Cavill in action along with some of his co-stars. Regardless of your feelings about director Tarsem’s previous work (Catwoman, for example) he seems to have turned a corner with this one and has his act together. We’re looking forward to it.

Before you click through to check out the trailer, here’s a bit about the film’s story to get you in the mood:

As a power-mad king razes ancient Greece in search of a legendary weapon, a heroic young villager rises up against him in a thrilling quest as timeless as it is powerful. With ruthless efficiency, Hyperion and his legions destroy everything in their wake, and it seems nothing will stop the evil king’s mission.

Check out the trailer after the jump. Immortals hits theaters on November 11th.

Henry Cavill and Kellan Lutz Take Care of Business In New Pics From ‘Immortals’

by Chris Ullrich, Feb 21 2011 // 10:30 AM

Now that Henry Cavill has been selected to play Superman in Zack Snyder’s next film, we’re going to be seeing more and more of him. Case in point are these latest picks from the upcoming film Immortals.

In them, Cavill and Twilight alum Kellan Lutz take care of business and often do it without shirts. Yes ladies, this post is pretty much mostly for you.

In case you’re not familiar with Immortals, it concerns the ruthless King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke) who “leads his bloodthirsty army on a murderous rampage across Greece to find a deadly weapon that will destroy humanity. A mortal chosen by Zeus named Theseus (Cavill) must lead the fight against Hyperion and his evil army with the fate of mankind and the Gods at stake.”

Check out all the pics after the jump. Look for Immortals, which is directed by Tarsem Singh and also features John Hurt, Isabel Lucas and Stephen Dorff, to hit theaters on November 11th (in 3D) and even more from Henry Cavill starting today and for the rest of our natural lives.

‘Breaking Dawn’ Picks Up A Release Date

by Matt Raub, May 7 2010 // 1:00 PM

We’re less than 2 months away from the third film in the Twilight Saga, titled Eclipse, to hit theaters, but that won’t slow down Summit Entertainment, as they’ve already locked the final film, Breaking Dawn, in with a release date of November 18, 2011.

Between this release date and news of Academy Award winning director Bill Condon (Gods and Monsters) joining the project, we’re getting a good amount of answers for a film that was once called by producers “unfilmable.” Questions we still need answered? Will this book be adapted into two films, much like the adaptation of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows? Also, can we expect the same 3D treatment that just about every other film next year will be getting?

This new release date puts Dawn up against some pretty heavy hitters, including Real Steel starring Hugh Jackman, from comedy director Shawn Levy, as well as Relativity Media’s Immortals in 3D, Happy Feet 2 in 3D, and the Shrek spinoff, Puss in Boots.

It’s no doubt that Dawn will take the weekend, if not the month of November in the box office, but the questions now lie with the production. Can Summit and Condon film the “unfilmable”? We should find out later this year, as Breaking Dawn starts shooting this fall.
