Marvel Helps Fans Get Back Into Comics With The Point One Program

by Matt Raub, Dec 3 2010 // 7:00 AM

Want to jump back into your favorite comic books to check in with some of your favorite superheroes and superheroines, but unable to pick up the pieces in the middle of a heavy storyline? Marvel has you covered by introducing the Point One program. Here’s the skinny.

The Point One program offers readers the perfect starting point for new storylines spinning out of the new year. Self-contained and featuring some of Marvel’s greatest talent and characters, these Point One books will lay the groundwork for a whole year’s worth of storytelling.

For years, this is the one problem that the comic book industry has dealt with. Now, fans can start fresh and continue getting weekly comics courtesy of Marvel without feeling like there are tons of back issues and trades that they have to read.

Starting in February, the publisher will be rolling out this new program on some of their mainstream titles, and eventually roll them out to all big books by May. Take a look at the complete list of effected books after the jump, and start picking up these new books this February.

Marvel Celebrates ‘TRON: Legacy’ With Tron-Themed Variant Covers

by Matt Raub, Oct 19 2010 // 1:00 PM

Back in 1982, a movie called TRON about a programmer that is thrown into his own video game universe took the nerd world by storm. For decades, guys and girls alike were hot gluing LED ropes to black leggings so that they can look like their favorite science fiction hero. Now, those fans are getting the opportunity to live it all over again as TRON: Legacy hits theaters this December.

With that amount of fan hype involved, it’s almost understandable that a publishing company as big as Marvel would want to jump on into pimping the film with some awesome crosspromotion. Not to mention the fact that Disney and Marvel are one in the same now.

Starting next month, 10 different popular titles will get special TRON-ized variant covers by artists like Mark Brooks (Avengers: The Initiative) and Brandon Peterson (Uncanny X-Men).

The books you need to look for are as follows:

Amazing Spider-Man #651, Avengers #7, Avengers Academy #7, Captain America #612, Incredible Hulks #618, Invincible Iron Man #33, New Avengers #7, Secret Avengers #7, Thor #617, and Wolverine #4.

Before they even hit shelves next month, be sure to check out each of these variant covers after the jump, and get your TRON on December 17th!

Exclusive Interview: Matt Fraction Talks ‘Iron Man’, ‘Thor’, More

by Chris Ullrich, Jul 21 2010 // 10:00 AM

Matt Fraction has a career most writers can envy. He gets to write some of the most interesting and exciting characters in the Marvel Universe and has also had great success with his earlier work as well.

Some of his accomplishments include the graphic novel 30 Days of Nights: Bloodsucker Tales, The Five Fists of Science and Casanova. At Marvel he’s written for Publisher: War Journal, The Immortal Iron Fist and The Order.

Now, he pilots the course of everyone’s favorite billionaire drunk Tony Stark in Invincible Iron Man and will soon take the reigns of another popular Marvel character’s comic: Thor. Recently, I had a chance to ask Mr. Fraction a few questions about Iron Man, Tony Stark, his work and what’s in store for him down the road.

The Flickcast: For those who don’t know, can you give us a little info on your background? For example, when did you first start to write?

Matt Fraction: Professionally? I did some journalism and magazine work in the late nineties and my first comics starting coming out in 2001. Personally, I’ve been telling stories with words and pictures my whole life.

I’ve dropped out of many exciting art and film schools across the United States.

TF: What do you think makes Tony Stark such a compelling character? His flaws?

MF: The way his flaws spin against his ambition, drive, and talents. The smartest man in the world that will never entirely understand that it doesn’t all revolve around him. It puts a lot of great material in front of you.

The Pull List Comic Reviews: ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’, ‘Siege’, ‘Question’ and More!

by Sal Loria, Feb 4 2010 // 2:00 PM

Buffy’s got a brand new bag, Superman makes his pitch for “World’s Greatest Detective” and the Sentry gets to the heart of the matter in this latest edition of The Pull List Comic Reviews! As always, WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD.

PULL OF THE WEEK:

Buffy The Vampire Slayer #32
Dark Horse Comics – $2.99 US
Writer: Brad Meltzer
Artist: Georges Jeanty
Score: 9/10

While the ongoing war against Twilight hits a lull, Buffy and Xander take the break to examine the Slayer’s new power set, much to Dawn’s chagrin. Meanwhile, Giles – along with Faith and Andrew – find themselves in Twilight’s grip and Willow makes a horrifying discovery.

Best-selling author Brad Meltzer – no stranger to comics – kicks off the “Twilight” story arc with this issue in a round-about way. Twilight himself doesn’t factor into the story much, but Meltzer took the “maximum fun” approach in setting up the pieces via tiny revelations sprinkled throughout the issue while focusing on Buffy’s new powers. The result is an incredibly enjoyable read that’s sure to please virtually any fan of comics or comics-related media.

Artist Georges Jeanty continues to pump out the work that has become the glue that holds everything together for this series, and this latest issue is no different. The scenes involving Buffy and Xander, especially, were a hoot, and how could you not love Buffy hovering in mid-air while asking the General to step outside? If this issue doesn’t symbolize having fun while making a comic, I don’t know what will.

Other issues came close – it was a really good week for comics – but this issue took home the Pull of the Week title thanks to an offering that was part major story arc launch and part open love letter to comics; it’s been quite some time that a comic has made me smile this much.

The Pull List Comic Reviews: ‘Adventure Comics’, ‘Daytripper’, ‘Marvels Project’ and More!

by Sal Loria, Jan 14 2010 // 3:00 PM

Welcome to another edition of The Pull List Comic Reviews! Superboy’s Adventure comes to an end, Daytripper continues to be trippy and the Rhino gets a happy ending that may actually stick. As always, WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD.

PULL OF THE WEEK:

adventure-comics-6-coverAdventure Comics #6
DC Comics – $3.99 US
Writer: Geoff Johns
Artist: Francis Manapul
Score: 9/10

Superboy has been trying to “find himself” and determine if he’s more Superman than Lex Luthor, since his genetic make-up is made from both of them. Unfortunately, it’s Luthor who finds him first and serves notice that for all his intellect and power, Luthor still has that nasty little streak in him.

Honestly, this has been a fun, engaging run by superstar writer Geoff Johns. Equal parts adventure (which works great with the title) and drama, all revolved around Superboy’s own identity crisis, this arc hit all the right buttons without coming across as preachy or whiny; a testament to the writer’s considerable talent of making relevant topics matter in the pages of a comic book.

Marvel Unveils New ‘Iron Man’ Armor

by Joe Gillis, Jan 11 2010 // 9:00 AM

Invincible-Iron-Man-New-Armor-smallChange, as they say, is inevitable. So it is with most things, including super powered suits worn by members of The Avengers. Case in point this new, improved armor design for one of our favorite flawed heroes: Iron Man.

The new suit, according to our friends at Marvel:

” . . . signals a new era for Tony Stark and the Marvel Universe! From the minds of Eisner Award-winning series writer Matt Fraction and Ryan Meinerding, designer on the Iron Man and Thor films, comes the most bleeding edge, out of this world armor you’ve ever seen!

Following the sold-out “Stark Disassembled” storyline, the Marvel Universe still needs its armored champion and a new mission requires a new kind of armor! But when you see just what Iron Man has planned for the Marvel Universe, your jaw will be on the floor! There’s never been a super hero like the new Iron Man!”

The all-new Iron Man makes his debut in Invincible Iron Man #25, which hits stores on April 25. In the meantime, click through to check out a larger pic of the new armor.
