Movie Review: ‘Red Dawn’

by Nat Almirall, Nov 25 2012 // 8:00 AM

I feel like I’ve been writing the sentence, “I’m not sure whether the world was clamoring for a x remake…” and that’s probably more due to my utter lack of creativity than anything else. I’m sure most people in my generation, who have seen the original Red Dawn, already dislike the movie, so I feel the need to defend it somewhat, or at least point out some good things it does well. Though I’m more interested in whether John Milius, the writer/director of the original film, will hunt down and kill the makers of this film, not because it doesn’t do the original justice, but because his keen, feral senses no doubt have recognized them as competition, and to protect his domain, he must slaughter and eat any trespassers. And that would be an awesome movie. I already know who would play John Milius.

Anyway, Red Dawn. I’m not sure whether the world was clamoring for a Red Dawn remake, but this one is pretty entertaining. The Red Scare is all but over, and with Albania being the only place left to get furious communist thought, the baddies are transformed from the Russians into the North Koreans, which strangely works, as the higher-ups in North Korea seem like just the right kind of nuts to try something like invading the US.

First ‘Red Dawn’ Reboot Trailer with Chris Hemsworth Arrives

by Joe Gillis, Aug 10 2012 // 12:15 PM

Yesterday, if you can remember that far back, we brought you the first poster for the reboot of the 1984 action cult classic Red Dawn. And now, as promised, there’s a new trailer today and we, of course, have it for you.

In it we get a good look at all the action, drama and even a little sexual tension that goes into your average angry hordes invade the Pacific Northwest and teenagers have to defend America movie. Gotta say, it doesn’t look horrible.

Sure, we still have a soft spot for the original and, if we’re being really critical, we know the original movie was such a product of its time it probably won’t translate to modern audiences and that Chris Hemsworth is really 29, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that this new movie just looks entertaining. And sometimes that’s all you can expect from a movie.

We don’t always need them to be masterpieces, just check-your-brain-at-the-door entertainment. Mission accomplished it seems.

Judge for yourself and check out the trailer after the break. Red Dawn hits theaters this Thanksgiving.

First Full ‘Red Dawn’ Reboot Poster Arrives

by Joe Gillis, Aug 9 2012 // 5:00 PM

Some of you, if you’re old enough, may remember an 80′s action movie called Red Dawn, which was directed by John Milius and written by Milius and Kevin Reynolds. It featured a pretty good cast including Patrick Swayze, Charlie Sheen, C. Thomas Howell, Lea Thompson, Jennifer Grey, Harry Dean Stanton and Powers Booth.

The film told the story of a band of High School students who fight against a Russian invasion of middle America and when it came out in 1984, it wasn’t exactly a blockbuster hit. Still, it did well enough and over the years it’s developed a pretty large cult following and many of us here at The Flickcast have a soft spot for it.

And now there’s a reboot. This time around the cast includes Chris Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson, Adrianne Palicki, Isabel Lucas and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Dan Bradley is directing this time around and we’ve got the first poster for the film to share with you today.

Check out the full version after the break. Look for Red Dawn to hit theaters in November. Wolverines!

SDCC11: Teaser Poster and Stills for ‘Immortals’

by Nat Almirall, Jul 23 2011 // 1:00 PM

One thing you can expect from a Tarsem Singh movie is a heap o’ interesting visuals. Combine that with Greek mythology, add some broth and a potato, and boy, you got yourself Singh’s latest, Immortals. Better yet, you got two stills and an epic poster, courtesy of Comic-Con.

Immortals stars Henry Cavill (Superman: Man of Steel) as Theseus, a stonemason who gathers a group of followers to take down the vicious King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke), a brutal tyrant on his own mad quest to destroy humanity and overthrow the very gods themselves.

In his quest, Theseus is aided by the oracle Phaedra (Slumdog Millionaire’s Freida Pinto) and a slave (Stephen Dorff). It may sound a bit Spartacus and Troy-y, but we’ll be watching to see what Tarsem does with 3D—coming from the guy who directed The Cell and The Fall, the pairing seems obvious.

Immortals is scheduled to open November 11, 2011. You can check out more photos and the poster after the jump.

New Trailer for ‘Immortals’ with Henry Cavill Arrives

by Joe Gillis, Jun 27 2011 // 11:15 AM

We’ve been following the upcoming film Immortals on and off for months. And today, we’ve got a brand new trailer for the film to share with you that expands on the earlier, shorter version.

In it we get a lot more of the story and get to see Henry ‘soon to be Superman” Cavill in action. Here’s more about the film’s story from the official synopsis:

The brutal and bloodthirsty King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke) and his murderous Heraklion army are rampaging across Greece in search of the long lost Bow of Epirus. With the invincible Bow, the king will be able to overthrow the Gods of Olympus and become the undisputed master of his world.

As village after village is obliterated, a stonemason named Theseus (Henry Cavill) vows to avenge the death of his mother in one of Hyperion’s raids. When Theseus meets the Sybelline Oracle, Phaedra (Freida Pinto), her disturbing visions of the young man’s future convince her that he is the key to stopping the destruction. With her help, Theseus assembles a small band of followers and embraces his destiny in a final desperate battle for the future of humanity.

Check out the trailer for the film after the jump. Immortals arrives in theaters on November 11th.

Check Out the First Full Trailer for ‘Immortals’

by Chris Ullrich, Apr 27 2011 // 1:00 PM

We’ve been following the progress of director Tarsem Singh’s Immortals for some time now. Of course, one of the reasons is that soon-to-be-Superman Henry Cavill is the star of the film. However, that isn’t the only reason and only one of the reasons the film looks pretty cool. The others you can find out by watching the brand new trailer for the film just released today.

In it we get our first good look at Cavill in action along with some of his co-stars. Regardless of your feelings about director Tarsem’s previous work (Catwoman, for example) he seems to have turned a corner with this one and has his act together. We’re looking forward to it.

Before you click through to check out the trailer, here’s a bit about the film’s story to get you in the mood:

As a power-mad king razes ancient Greece in search of a legendary weapon, a heroic young villager rises up against him in a thrilling quest as timeless as it is powerful. With ruthless efficiency, Hyperion and his legions destroy everything in their wake, and it seems nothing will stop the evil king’s mission.

Check out the trailer after the jump. Immortals hits theaters on November 11th.
