Steve Pink To Direct & Co-Write A ‘Toxic Avenger’ Reboot

by Matt Raub, Nov 8 2010 // 11:15 AM

Just when you thought a Superman and Spider-Man reboot would be enough for the world of superhero films, you’ve got to think again. Everybody’s favorite Jersey crusader is getting another chance at the limelight, as Hot Tub Time Machine director Steve Pink is getting a shot at the reboot. From Deadline.

“The Toxic Avenger is exactly what the country–wait, that’s not big enough–what the world needs right now,” said Pink, who also directed Accepted and whose scripting credits include Grosse Pointe Blank and High Fidelity. Kerry Foster, who runs Goldsman’s Weed Road, is executive producer with Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz, the Troma proprietors who created Toxic Avenger.

While this could be great news for fans of Pinks past work on Hot Tub, High Fidelity, and Grosse Point Blank, the sad news is that the rights of Toxie no longer fall to Lloyd Kaufman and the gang at Troma Films.

Back in April, super producers Akiva Goldsman, Richard Saperstein and Charlie Corwin all obtained the remake rights to Toxic Avenger, which include all 4 films and the animated series. While that may mean you’ll never see a resurgence in The Toxic Avenger Musical, this remake could prove to be entertaining.

Review: ‘Hot Tub Time Machine’

by Matt Raub, Mar 23 2010 // 3:00 PM

Very rarely does a film come along that incites interest and excitement from the title alone. Not since Snakes on a Plane has a film done this to a mass audience, and unfortunately, the excitement of that title led to an underwhelming payoff in the film itself. Luckily, we fans of comedy and cult cinema get a second chance at happiness with the upcoming release of Hot Tub Time Machine.

I’ll admit, after hearing about the title, seeing who was in the cast, and getting a peek at the first trailer, I was ready to get excited about the film, which is never a good sign. Thankfully, in checking out a screening of the flick, not only does it hold up to its ironic title, but kills with its spot-on writing and nonstop visual humor.

I’d explain the premise to you, but if you’re going into a movie called Hot Tub Time Machine and you’re looking for some kind of Notebook style story that you can sell to your wife or girlfriend, you’re out of luck. This movie is roughly 90 minutes of hilarity, done in a setting of science fiction. If Bill and Ted graduated from San Dimas High School, grew up,  went through a few failed marriages, and had a drinking problem, they would be the characters in Hot Tub.

New ‘Hot Tub Time Machine’ Red Band Trailer

by Chris Ullrich, Jan 21 2010 // 3:58 PM

hot-tub-time-machineAs our own Matt Raub pointed out recently, there are some pretty great, and some pretty awful, movie titles out there. Luckily, a few talented screenwriters and actors feel the same way and are bringing us Hot Tub Time Machine — which, I’m sure you will agree, is an awesome title for a movie.

The movie itself, written by Sean Anders and John Morris with direction by Steve Pink, sounds pretty great too. Four guys decide to bond on a ski trip and party hard all night on Red Bull and Vodka. They continue the night in the house’s hot tub, which transports them to 1986, where hi-jinks then ensue. With a cast that John Cusack, Craig Robinson (The Office, Zach and Miri Make a Porno), Clark Duke (Sex Drive, Superbad), and Rob Corddry (What Happens in Vegas, Harold and Kumar 2) the film seems to be a sure-fire winer.

And now, we’ve got a brand new Red Band trailer for the film which was just released this afternoon. In this latest one, we get more action, more sex, more drugs and more time travel. Sounds like a great time to us (pun intended).

The film, which also stars Chevy Chase, Crispin Glover and the terrific Kat Dennings, hits theaters on March 19th.

Check out the trailer after the jump. By clicking through, you certify you are 18 years of age or older. Go get it!

First Two Trailers For ‘Hot Tub Time Machine’

by Matt Raub, Dec 17 2009 // 8:00 AM

Picture 2There are some pretty great, and some pretty awful movie titles out there. From something long like Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans to The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, some titles just don’t work. Luckily, a few good screenwriters feel the same way, and bring us Hot Tub Time Machine.

The premise sounds pretty much like bliss once you hear the names involved. Four guys decide to bond on a ski trip and party hard all night on Red Bull and Vodka. They continue the night in the house’s hot tub, which transports them to 1986, where hi-jinks then ensue.

The aforementioned names involved are John Cusack, Craig Robinson (The Office, Zach and Miri Make a Porno), Clark Duke (Sex Drive, Superbad), and Rob Corddry (What Happens in Vegas, Harold and Kumar 2). The film basically looks like The Hangover meets Back to the Future, with a little bit of Click thrown in for heart.
