Film Review: ‘Gulliver’s Travels’

by Nat Almirall, Dec 26 2010 // 11:30 AM

Is there any performer more in love with his job than Jack Black? He’s not the greatest actor, he doesn’t choose the best scripts, or work with the finest directors, but he has a sheer and infectious ebullience that elevates the material, no matter how mediocre it is.  Thirty or so years from now, people probably won’t remember Gulliver’s Travels, but they’ll remember Jack Black—it’s no joke to say he’s the Fred Astaire of this generation.

And it’s no joke to say he’s the best part of Gulliver’s Travels, just as he’s the best part of Shallow Hal, Orange County, and a bunch of other vehicles that are all our guilty pleasures. They’re not great, or even really good, but there’s enough smiles to keep you watching.

And that’s Gulliver’s Travels, albeit it’s much more of a kid’s film than Black’s usual saucy romps (Kung-Fu Panda notwithstanding). Here he plays the titular Lemuel Gulliver, slacker mail-room drone for a New York newspaper and secretly in love with the travel editor Darcy (Amanda Peet).

One day, through a series of coincidences, he ends up claiming to be a travel writer to impress Darcy, and she puts him on assignment cover the Bermuda Triangle, and a hop, skip, and waterspout later, he washes up on the island of Lilliput, where all the residents are about 1/10 his size.

Dan Aykroyd Brings Us The First Trailer For ‘Yogi Bear’

by Matt Raub, Jul 29 2010 // 7:00 AM

There’s a pretty fine line to walk when it comes to remaking a classic. Sometimes the studio gets it right and stays as true to the original as possible, and sometimes we get Cedric the Entertainer’s Honeymooners. Thankfully, the live action Yogi Bear film falls under the umbrella of the former.

If the film is nothing else, it deserves an award for voice directing. Both Dan Aykroyd and Justin Timberlake lend their voices for the film, and you really couldn’t tell unless you were told, which is exactly how it should be.

Joining the cast is Tom Cavanagh as Ranger Smith, Anna Faris, and after an astounding audition with a live bear, T.J Miller was worked into the script as Ranger Jones.

The trailer looks like it could do the franchise justice, or at the very least, do better than the upcoming Smurfs film. And yes, the film will be in 3D, as if there was any doubt.

Check out the trailer after the jump and catch Yogi Bear in theaters and in 3D on December 17.

Four New Clips From ‘She’s Out Of My League’

by Matt Raub, Mar 2 2010 // 8:00 AM

With Kevin Smith’s Cop Out defying the tidal wave of negative reviews and still managing to bring in nearly $20 Million this past weekend, other studios are looking to amp up their comedies in hopes they will be a trending genre for moviegoers this year.

With that, Paramount and Dreamworks is gearing up for next week’s release of She’s Out of My League, starring Alice Eve and Tropic Thunder’s Jay Baruchel. The film throws an interesting twist into the “boy meets girl” dynamic by adding the fact that the guy is a lanky geek and the girl is a “10″. Never heard that one before, right?

The film hits theaters on March 12th, but we were lucky enough to get our hands on a few tasty new clips to share with you. Check them out after the jump. In addition to Barchel, the film also stars Mike Vogel, Debra Jo Rupp, Kim Shaw, Geoff Stults, and T.J. Miller. It hits theaters on March 12.

First Trailer For ‘She’s Out Of My League’

by Matt Raub, Jan 7 2010 // 2:33 PM

21842_239006357011_96027972011_3368718_3827278_nJay Baruchel has got quite a lot going for him lately. He gets to run along a crazed Nic Cage while he does in The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, and now he gets to play the not-so-good-looking guy in a romantic comedy called She’s Out of My League.

Leaning towards more “comedy” than “romantic,” the story takes the convention of “Average boy meets hot girl” and throws it on it’s head. Baruchel (Tropic Thunder) plays Kirk, an average Joe who happens across Molly, played by Alice Eve (Big Nothing, Starter for 10). They end up dating, and Kirk has no idea what to do with himself.

The plot doesn’t sound all that inspired (Hello, Knocked Up), but the trailer does it a bit more justice, showing off some of today’s up-and-coming character actors in the comedy world. Nate Torrence (Get Smart’s Bruce And Lloyd Out of Control), T.J. Miller (Cloverfield) and a few others join Baruchel and Eve.

Check out the trailer for She’s Out of My League after the jump, which hits theaters on March 12th.
