Top Cow’s ‘The Darkness/Pitt #1′ A Sell Out

by Joe Gillis, Sep 4 2009 // 11:00 AM

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
PAUL JENKINS & DALE KEOWN’S
THE DARKNESS/PITT #1 SELLS OUT!
Long Awaited Crossover Debut Issue Sold Out at Distributor Level
LOS ANGELES, Calif., September 2nd, 2009 – Top Cow Productions, Inc. proudly announced today that the first issue of The Darkness/Pitt has sold out at the distributor level.  The highly anticipated crossover series has been over five years in the making and was held back from release by Top Cow Productions until all principal work on the series had been completed.
Paul Jenkins (Captain America: Theater of War) and Pitt creator Dale Keown (Berserker) have reunited for the first time since their much-lauded run on The Darkness in 2002 in The Darkness/Pitt.  The series also marks the first Pitt series in a decade and creator Keown’s return to the character he is best known for. In the three issue limited series, Jackie Estacado, mafia hitman and current bearer of The Darkness, encounters an alien infection which turns in monstrous zombie like beings. Meanwhile, Pitt, an alien/human hybrid warrior, and his teen half-brother Tim arrive in New York tracking down this same problem. What happens next is pure Jenkins and Keown magic.
“We’re thrilled that fans and retailers have reacted so positively to the release of The Darkness/Pitt,” commented Top Cow Publisher Filip Sablik, “It’s been a long time in the making, but good things do come to those that wait.”
“Every panel shows the love for the medium and a cunning eye for dynamics, action moments, perspective and the use of light/shadow is used delicately and skillfully.” – Broken Frontier
“This is a wild ride from Jenkins and Keown. It’s not going to win any awards, but it sure is an exciting, eye-popping read.” – Comic Book Resources
The Darkness/Pitt #2 is scheduled to be in stores on September 23rd and retailers are reminded to double check their orders prior to Diamond’s Final Order Cutoff.

PTDK001_COVA_unstamped-1In the spirit of bringing you news of successful comics that don’t just come from the “Big Two,” our friends at Top Cow also keep coming out with books that sell . . . and sell very well. This time around its Paul Jenkins and Dale Keown’s The Darkness/Pitt #1 which features the first crossover of these two characters.

Here’s all the info about this new book directly from the official press release. Of course, as always, check out some cover art after the jump too.

Top Cow Announces ‘Pilot Season’ Concepts With Kirkman and Silvestri

by Joe Gillis, Jul 6 2009 // 5:44 PM

PS2009_sketch001Besides Marvel, DC, Dark Horse and some of the other companies we talk about a lot here, we’re also fans of the comics coming out of Top Cow. Some of their books, including the Witchblade series and The Darkness, are among our favorites. Now, the company has announced that one of our favorite writers, Robert Kirkman, and one of the best artists around, Mark Silvewstri, are teeming up to create a new project for The Pilot Season Initiative.

Here’s all the details from the official Top Cow press release. Be sure to check out the larger Silvestri concept art after the jump.

Top Cow Productions, Inc. proudly announced on July 2nd on Attack of The Show that the renowned writer Robert Kirkman (Invincible, The Walking Dead) and Marc Silvestri (Dark Avengers/Uncanny X-Men: Utopia, The Darkness) are teaming up to co-create five original concepts for the Pilot Season initiative in 2009. On Attack of the Show, “Fresh Ink” host Blair Butler broke the news that Robert Kirkman will write the brand new pilot issues, while Marc Silvestri will create the designs for the series and contribute the covers for each issue. Interior art teams and details of the concepts will be announced at a later date.

Back to the Beginning for ‘The Darkness’

by John Carle, Jun 9 2009 // 5:40 PM

the-darkness-originsWho is Jackie Estacado? What is The Darkness? What powers does it have? How is it connected to Jackie? All of these are questions for anyone who might find themselves picking up The Darkness Volume 2 #78 on comic store shelves later this month. With thirteen years of history to the character, one of the most intimidating things for a new reader is to dive into an established series for the first time. Unlike such iconic characters as Superman, Batman or Spider-Man, The Darkness hasn’t reached a level that everyone, comic fan or not, knows the character’s origin, or even the most important facets of it. But Top Cow is doing something to remedy this problem.

Later this month, Top Cow Productions is publishing The Darkness Origins Volume 1. The first rare six issues of the first volume of this series will be reprinted and packaged together allowing readers to relive the beginning of The Darkness.  According to Top Cow’s official info on the book:

“The Darkness Origins Volume 1 tells the story of how mafia hitman Jackie Estacado was blessed and cursed on his 21st birthday when he inherited the power of The Darkness. Readers will learn how the elemental force of The Darkness gives Estacado access to an otherworldly dimension and control over the demons who dwell there. This volume collects the origin of Estacado as the current bearer of The Darkness, and introduces classic characters such as the Angelus, Butcher, and Sonatine.”
